      It was founded by Ivo Lukačovič, founder of Seznam.cz, which is basically czech "Google" (and that is why Google gives us new features among the first ones to compete :) ) and he is an avid helicopter pilot and even owns an airport right next to Prague :) So that is maybe why.

    I have FltPlanGO on my iPad and it is free. At least in the US you can have all of the charts, Victor routes, approaches and departures and a database of all of the airports with information such as FBOs, fuel prices, METARs and TAFs and other information. You just need an email address to get all of it. With you being in Australia, I don't know if you would just get the AUS information or if you could get all of the info that I do. One reason that Jeppesen is so expensive now is that it is a part of the Boeing Company along with ForeFlight.

  • @1andonlyBL4CK0UT
    @1andonlyBL4CK0UT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was gonna recommend you to create an autorouter account, but seems rocket route already does the same. It basically checks for the optimal route, taking current and filed traffic into consideration, aswell as giving an alternate as need be. It is a service by eurocontrol. And you can, by what I have been told file your flight plan directly there. You also can save different airplanes as a preset including all those things such as perfomance charts and basically have the entire weight and balance and so on be done automatically.
    Anyway, before i write much more, I am really excited about seeing your preparations for the upcoming trip and the videos of the trip. Best wishes

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Blackout. I've heard of Autorouter but as you say I can get similar functionality from RocketRoute for routing especially through Eurocontrol and can validate a flight plan before I file it. Makes pre-planning a lot easier and RR does have weight and balance and aircraft performance capabilities, but I'm not using those. Only using it to check/file flight plans.

    You could do a lot of cost saving using solely foreflight! You can do everything including filing flight plans through it! you can also link it to Jeppessen charts in foreflight.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can Foreflight file flight plans into every FIR in the world, and is there a cost saving for having a Jepps subscription just because I'm using it in ForeFlight? If not then it may be more expensive to have FF on top of RocketRoute and the Jeppesen subscription. But I'm always keen to find ways to save, so let me know, thanks!

    • @ThomasLeNinja
      @ThomasLeNinja 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StefanDrury I believe that Foreflight can file in every FIR. I know for a fact they do FAA and Eurocontrol. The advantage of having foreflight with jepp is that you won't need your other jepp subscripition or rocket route. You can keep everything in ForeFlight and make it your go to all inclusive EFB!

    Hey Stef,
    Since you mention Europe a lot in your recent videos, be prepared that ATC will call you rather V-YZ most over the world.
    Especially in Europe.
    E.g. in Switzerland where GA Callsigns look like HB-ABC the abbreviation would be H-BC, same in Sweden and other countries with same pattern. Germany, France, UK or Canada will do the same with D-ABCD and short D-CD.
    And as far as I know that is also the way ICAO wants it. Isn’t it?
    All the best and take care!
    J.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Jassy, good tip. Yes we're updating the transponder to show the aircraft as "VHEYZ" for the trip as opposed to just "EYZ" as it shows in Australia. So then yeah, I'd contact a new frequency with "VICTOR HOTEL ECHO YANKEE ZULU" as my call sign and would expect "VYZ" or similar shortened depending on how busy the airspace was. Cheers.

      Hello Karl, I have used Foreflight before. If it could file a flight plan anywhere in the world (I'm unsure on this), and could integrate Jeppesen charts for a lower price than using Jepps direct, AND had Worldwide charts (I don't believe they have charts for Australia for example) then yes it would be a great solution, a one stop shop really. But based on my research and a lot of time working out combinations, these 5 apps for me give me the best and most affordable coverage for the flights I'll be doing.

    • @rsmckgla
      @rsmckgla 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stefan Drury they do now include Australia, but not sure if it would work out any more cost effective! foreflight.com/products/jeppesen/

    Seems like you will be well equipped Stefan.
    i have to say Jepp are quite expensive as i had an update subscription to the Bottlang guide a good few years ago.
    Also their FOM2(B) dispatcher course cost me an eyewatering £5500 pounds including 6 weeks heavily discounted accommodation in Denver Colorado.Howevever that said i am very impressed by them and would prefer to use them over Pooleys.
    i am assuming all these apps are available on Google play store as i am using Samsungs A6 tablets, one normal and one back up
    for exactly the reasons you give.
    Finances depending i might try to make the GP as i can combine it with a planned visit to BNE bushfires dependent.

      Two sites i use heavily in Europe are the German & UK met offices.
      i know the UK met office has an excellent app which is free at basic level but if you want to access
      more in depth forecasting it is £50 per year which gives you access to a whole range of stuff very similar tl Windy.
      Just out of interest there is someone here in ths UK who is planning the same thing.
      Not sure what the plan is with them though but have just seen it on FB here in a local group

    Nice selection of Apps. Why not try to get sponsorship for Garmin Pilot for this trip? Windy is amazing, I use it for nearly all my flights. Easy and Free, and actually better visualization of the weather situation than the Dutch and German national weather services have to offer (which you have to pay for).

    The most important question that has been bugging me is whether you’ll be flying with a three of four Bladed prob. For (fuel) efficiency and stuff..

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3 blade for the RTW trip. It’s stronger than the composite blade, and a tiny bit less drag in the cruise. So I’m happy to sacrifice a little climb performance and the aerodynamic braking benefits of the 4 for the economy of the 3.

    I've only ever flown privately across the Canada-U.S. border. The Americans want eAPIS entering and leaving the country plus a chat with the CBP dudes when you land. Coming back to Canada you just phone it in. 99% of the time they don't even meet you at the airport, just do the customs stuff over the phone. "Here's your report number. Have a nice day."

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I look forward to going through Canada in that case! Yeah I'm sure some countries will be more bureaucratic than others, but I'm not rushing and will respect the systems in each region I fly through even if they take longer than others. Thanks Laura.

    hi Stef, how are you?
    I just first wanted to tell you awesome videos, I love your channel and I have been a subscriber for the last two or three weeks now.
    I have a question about your trip. I was wondering if you were coming to Colombia, since and I don't want to sound cocky but, I have been living here for the last three years and I am currently 16 and doing my PPL (private pilot license) on a cirrus sr20.

  • @tom_f253
    @tom_f253 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought for ICAO you legally had to carry a ‘physical suitable map’ for your route? If I’m wrong, can someone point me to the annex which says differently? And in the case you do have to carry a map, Stef, how do you intend to do this when flying across the whole world?

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CASA regulations state that there are requirements for the types of maps that need to be carried on VFR/IFR flights, but these can be paper or electronic forms. And where you need a backup this can also be paper or electronic. Check out CAAP 233-1 for some light reading :)

    If you're shooting a video maybe check out that series as well. Racing's closer, harder and overall just better and more exciting than in F1.

      Bit stupid that though isn’t it? He’s probs always done this stuff but hasn’t shown it cause it’s not that interesting. Pilots don’t just fly. That’s irresponsible.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha, yeah I know Rik. It's a very romantic notion to gaze to the horizon and then set sail or fly wherever your heart desires... but then you remember the world is full of other people's rules and I need the right tools if I want to adhere to them all. But I hear you!

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Apex, I think Rik means that there's a lot of bureaucracy these days and it's a shame we need to bother with all these apps and tools in order to do something like fly around the world. Not like the aviators of old who set the compass pointing East and flew!

    i would get notability it is around $5 and you can annotate, write notes and everything you could possible want, it is made for the apple pencil! it is a great app and defiantly if you are copying long taxi, or flight routing instructions as you have unlimited space and you can go back and delete things if need be. give it a try, i think it will make a large difference!!!! @stefan Drury

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not for me. It's a great tool for certain regions, but FF doesn't have mapping in Australia for example. Plus can Foreflight file flight plans in every FIR worldwide? I'm not sure but I know for a fact that RocketRoute can. All of these is always down to personal preference of the pilot in command. There's no 'right' set of apps to take remember, I'm just sharing my setup to help others make their own decisions. So Foreflight may work for some, and when I've used it (flying in Europe) I was very impressed by it, but for my trip I'm not planning to use it.

    • @Mike_Costello

      Here is the latest FF what works where page for interest. There are no Visual Maps for eg in Australia. Only high level enroute and terminal maps.
