Running Taikoubou 4 with Jotaro 6 is so good bruh. And putting a character like Don Patch who can build up meter well makes it easier to spam both supers. It's such a fun team
This is my favorite DS game, no joke. Thanks for the wonderful video. Jump Ultimate Stars is such an amazing game, probably one of my favorite fighting games too. Fuusuke and Taikoubou main here. My goats...
the little details in this game made it so amazing. Ill never forget accidentally running heie's dragon of darkness flame super into myself and discovering it gives him a powerup. Greatest anime fighting game of all time
Just a tip. It lasts around 5-6 seconds and when that time is up Hiei will pause and be stuck for a second. But if you switch him out at the last second it'll just go away without any drawbacks
I absolutely love the trope in platform fighters where "oh, your fight is just an episode of this cartoon, or an issue of this comic/manga series", it's so immersive to me. And the whole "the larger the manga page, the stronger your character" is SO COOL
I was a huge D Gray Man fan at the time, and I remember Lenalee being my main cheese character. Her side attack would essentially carry you off stage a slam dunk you. Doing it to 3 characters at once was really satisfying. Good times.
Ultimate is the reason I got into Shonen Jump mangas. Back then, I only knew DB, OP, and Naruto. But after playing the game, a brand new world has been opened, right before my eyes. I'm really grateful for this game's existence.
I remember being in a GameStop as a kid and seeing this game on the DS shelf. I wanted it so bad, but my parents wouldn't let me, because it was the early 2010's, and there was this weird stigma for media that was "too Japanese", at least where I lived.
Oh god, haven't heard about this series for _quite_ a while... Thinking about it, the character panel sizes were similar to the Ratio system, effectively making the games a ratio-based Tag game before the system was adopted by the MvC2 Community, in a way. (It even has its own 4 gods equivalent: Kid Buu, Raoh, Edajima & Sasuke. All 4 takes up 7 panels _at least_ .) Characters (Playable & assists) also come in 3 types: *Power/力* (red), *Smarts/知* (Green) and *Comedy/笑* (Yellow) and are effective against one another in a RPS system (力>知>笑>力>...). A playable character is usually designated in one of those 3 types but has an 1 alt version that corresponds to another type according to their personalities (i.e. Goku is a Power-type that comes in various panel sizes from base in 4~5 panels, SS1 in 6~7 panels and Vegito in his 8-panel form but also has an alt version of his 4-panel self as a Comedy Type), so building your deck also comes with that caveat in mind. It's a really fun and novel concept that gives the games *plenty* of personality.
Thing is, the higher cost panels weren't always better, like Ichigo 7 is usually thought of as better than 8 cause he can combo into his super without assists, Yoh 4 is way way way better than 5 and 6 so on and so forth, as the game developed it ended up being better to just have a bunch of 4s cause your inactive chars regain health while they're out of the fight so having the maximum amount of chars recovering ended up adding up, and you just covered more matchups that way too.
The days of playing this w/ voice chat w/ the GameFAQ crew 😎. This and Mario Kart DS were my go-tos back when McDonald’s offered FREE WiFi (Telstra) for Nintendo DS users.
JUS was, and still is the greatest Jump videogame there has ever been. It's such a shame that there has never been anything else like it and instead we have Jump Force now. The days playing online in the Gamefaq boards are something I look back on really fondly.
These games had so much fucking soul, man, modern Jump games could never... Also, they're translated now? Damn, I might just play it again. I remember there was a bunch of "???" stuff that the GameFAQs guides didn't cover and that drove me nuts back when.
well, I haven't been able to find the patch for Super Stars but Ultimate Stars is mostly translated, only things they missed were some menu buttons and the quiz at the end. They DID, however, translate every single panel in the game.
So glad you covered Jump Ultimate Stars. It was the only time I ever imported a video game and spent most of the Wii/DS generation playing it over Smash Bros. maxing out the in-game playtime hours.
This is one of my favorite fighting games of all time. I want so badly for us to get a modern Jump game in a similar style to this, with a roster that's as expansive and varied. This game is what got me interested in series like Reborn and Eyeshield 21, so I have a lot of love for it
This game (or super stars I forget which) introduced me to the concept of counterplay with its weakness system (brawn>brain>funny>brawn) I was a super big Big 3 fan so of course I got the biggest Naruto and Luffy panels on my team. I thought I was hot shit. My friend goes “alright you asked for this” and kicked my ass with a Bobobo. What a time.
this is the first game i imported...got me to read/watch so many manga/anime that have stuck with me to this day...Reborn, Eyeshield 21, and the goat of goats Ginatama
If they'd just stop fucking around and make "Jump Infinite Stars" just like JUS for the recent Xbox , PS and Switch with all the same characters and of course more recent series like JJK, Demon Slayer, BNHA and etf.... we'd be living it UP .
I miss 2d anime/manga games, I hope they start making a comeback it would be cool to a modern version of this crossover that isn't tied down to weird Zack Sneider renders.
I'm not the best at fighters, but I'll get this game for my modded 3DS just because im a huge fan of comic history and especially the more lesser known ones. The fact that they acknowledged Jump's gag manga history unlike Jump Force already makes it based.
What I really loved about out this game as well, is you could play locally with your friends who didn’t own a copy. The game basically let you play a free trial version over LAN with anyone who had a DS, it was great at school and sleepovers.
Fantastic game, thank you for covering it! I played back in the 2000s and still play today (vids on my channel!) and have yet to find another fighting game that grips me quite as well. The meta in the western playerbase evolved to supportless due to just how varied and strong supports could be. Meanwhile the remaining JP players tend to have a “no holds barred” approach where anything goes outside of the hacked koma
Never played this one for myself, but the various gimmicks about manga are so creative! It's funny that what first hooked me onto some of these Shonen Jump series were great games like Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2.
So, because I have a viz manga/shonen jump subscription, I'm excited to say I recognize double the amount of characters I would otherwise. There's popular manga, then what you think is "obscure" manga isn't actually that obscure. I'm going to have to go digging for a few of these, Nikyu and Pyu to Fuku, for example. Muhyo and Roji I read fully but wouldn't necessarily recommend. Big recommend for Neurogami Neuro, even though it has an amateur nature to it. Also just fucking shoutouts to manga like "Tegami Bachi (Letter Bee)" and "Claymore"; which I don't think are in these but if you're looking for manga made with a lot of heart (which is a very meaningful quality outside of the technical skill of manga); go for it. In general, a viz + shonen jump subscription is 6$ total. 3$ per. It's super super super worth it. The catalogues are huge, they're still adding manga as time goes on. Frieren is the star of the show for me right now in Viz; while Shonen has at least 8 I read every month.
this game is so goated, i played a shit ton of it with friends, we all had flashcards (2007/2008) and at first we played this game with a basic manual but later when a translation patch came, we moved to that the characters going black and white as their life get's reduced is so satisfying i think i'll download it again and play the campaign
I remember playing this game when I was little. I also remember that I beat the campaign mode with just the default characters (4 panel Luffy, Naruto and Goku) because I didn't know you could create other characters.
The manga panel team builder reminds me of how Kid Icarus: Uprisings power up selection works, where the powerups are all a different shape/size and have to be fit into a small grid.
I remember you showed me this game. I can still remember struggling to put my team together, I know Train was one of the characters, and sadly forgotten the other 2. Still wish i had my own to fight ya.
Jump ultimate stars was huge for me growing up. This was when chat rooms were a thing and I really enjoyed the community aspect. The sprites are so good and it sucks to think we might not really see games made like this anymore. Super ambitious being 4p
Hell yeah brother. Throwing me back to a similar middle school experience with this game. I just found out there is an English patched Rom, putting it on my Steam Deck now 🙏🏻
One of the interesting things I remember from online play were Japanese Piccolo players I would encounter that hunted down anyone using the big 3, and then taunted the rest of the match. Also shout outs to the other heavy used supports of Shun 3-Koma the edge guard king and Satsuki 2-Koma for the sheer amount of healing.
This video brought back so many memories! I'll even forgive "Otojojuku" at 10:27, and forgetting to list Taizō Mote King Saga. :P But seriously, thanks for talking about this one! It was a big reason why I got into learning Japanese. I agree completely when you talk about how this game GOT IT RIGHT in so many ways.
Awesome video! I missed alot on these times especially when I was a child. Seeing Hitman: ReBorn being acknowledged is such a pure delight since it's really underrated on a unique way. Anyways, I also wanna see a review on Sonic Battle on GBA for the time being. Keep it up mr champ c:
A great game, I remember it with great affection. I'm not a big fan of Brawlers (Smash Style), but this game was a dream for any anime and manga fan. The team formation system was truly unique. I didn't get to play competitively, but I did complete the single player 100% (guessing what each menu did...). Excellent video. PS: I hope one day you can try the new update to my game.
I used to play this a ton back in the GameFAQs days, I was an aggressive Sirlin-poster on the board telling people to stop banning combo breaking and infinites and the like (the big three I was always on the fence about, since Shun 3, Ryouji 2 and Toki 2 were pretty much just as good, especially since you got an extra help-square). Used to play a ton with a fantastic Kakashi-player and the board's Fuusuke-main who was stellar, I don't remember any of their names now, but there was some surprisingly good matches to be had once people got serious.
Oh God, the memories. This game was my teenagehood. I played completely in Japanase, so as you can imagine, it was quite a confusing experience. Confusing, but fun as hell. This game was my first introduction to so many Jump series that today are some of my favorite manga. Also, fun story: JUS was my first exposure to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, like 15 years before the modern anime adaptation. And basically, it spoiled me the end of Stardust Crusaders, and both Jotaro and DIO's powers. Oh well.
as a nougami neuro fam, my brain exploded knowing that both neuro and yako are in this game, and now i want to play this. ahhhh thats siiiiiiiick. thanks for sharing such a cool video btw!
Honestly it's my favorite Jump game, having Light do something of use in a game was such a cool concept to me. Same with being able to play as Tsuna, although his moveset was more joke-based. Seeing Slam Dunk and Gintama in a game was awesome.
I had this very nostalgic experience earlier this month, I went to visit my bro from college to meet his newborn daughter, and he had his copy of this game in the shelf! We spend a few minutes playing it. It was awesome, until the babies started crying and we had to go back to adult life :(
I played so much of this game, even before anyone started working on a translation patch. I also remember seeing Super Stars, the ine before this, actually at Best Buy alongside the first Ouendan.
Damn, I remember those good times playing this game! The game is so rich! Jump Super Stars was good but Jump Ultimate Stars was so much better! My dream game is a follow-up of this game made by Arc System Works!
"They had us in the 1st half Ngl" I play this game religiously to this day and since it's release, and praise as a masterpiece. The online days with the black Koma, Football guy, trunks, and Taikoubou were just frustrating. Frieza has his own infinite, and one of the best online combos: Sasuke + Kyoya Hibari from hitman reborn...
This game looks so cute and creative… and you’re cooking 🔥 with Capcom vs. Shonen Jump. Not only would I love to see those characters under Vs. series like mechanics, but the Denji vs. Leon matchup would be legendary.
I went by Durango on Jump Ultimate Stars. I imported it in 2007 and spent so many hours on this game. Well over 10,000 games played online before Brawl came out. It got me into so many anime series. Also, the soundtrack absolutely slaps!
This game is sick, I remember showing it off to friends in high school so I could spread the word of how good D. Gray-Man was. I also remember certain gems were kind of scarce so whenever online games went to sudden death, everybody would stand around and taunt so that all players got rewarded with gems s they could fill out their panel libraries.
This is the first game I ever imported as a kid, I didn't even recognize 90% of the cast, I just wanted to play Goku vs Naruto. Spent so many nights suffering through bad wifi and spamming projectiles from entire screens away with Train from Black Cat. As soon as you showed the Dio with Trunks assist deck, all the memories came flooding back. I didn't even know who Dio was, but I hated that fucker's timestop and eye lasers.
I remember playing this game on r4 having no idea what's going due to the japanese text and knowing only DBZ and Naruto from playground talk. Super jarring to come back in this game as a die hard JoJo and fighting game enthusiast now
One of the few games I ever imported. Put in over a hundred hours into it, and ended up 100%ing it through sheer attrition without understanding a single stroke of Japanese. Good memories. Now J-Stars Victory Vs. was the complete opposite feeling that I had for Jump Ultimate Stars. And the former ended up getting localized in the first place so it felt like one huge waste of money.
Jump Super Stars just blew me away the first time I saw it. Like, it was such an ambitious title for the DS and a big deal for Shonen Jump fans. Forgetting online, I don't even have anyone to play this game with locally, but I still enjoyed it tremendously from both the fighting and collecting aspects. I had a blast testing my own knowledge as a Shonen fans through unlocking the komas and trying to come up with my own ultimate team - in which, surprisingly, a team helmed by Nami from One Piece. After who knows how long, I managed to come up with an endless combo that allows me to stun lock and kill any opponent, without cheating of course and provided that I got the assist timing just right. I was so proud of myself, even though I had no one show off that feat to. XD I wish they would make more games like this for the modern consoles, but alas, all the big companies are interested in nowadays are mostly AAA level games that just copies off other successful titles, and it's not like any Indie dev can just afford to get the rights to make a Jump Super Stars sequel... Ah, we could have had not just Sakamoto vs Reborn but also Saitama vs Mash, Deku vs Yuji, etc. and undoubtedly, some of the best koma panels to unlock such as the legendary Kagurabachi! XD
Wow, and I thought the meta revolved around DIO, considering how everyone and their mother played him online. I would play Seiya just to kick their asses. XD The soundtrack is also very amazing especially in the Sky and the City stages. Thanks for talking about this, Guile!! You're definitely the GOAT of the FGC and hopefully more people know about this masterpiece.
What a nice work you’re doing here. Even though I’ve never been best at any fighting game (maybe just Tekken 3 due to time spent on that title only) , the real added value to me has always been the ability to directly control one character’s powers and challenge strong opponents with as much characterisation as my chosen one. It’s engaging, exciting, and for sprites-based games, a delightful experience. Can’t compare with anything else but some platforms and titles expanding same concept such as DBZ Kakarot. But, really, there’s something about classic fighting games that really draws imagination and pulls you right in the fray.
i wanted this game so badly when i was a kid. the idea of a game even similar to smash bros on DS was incredible to me. if only they localized this game TT_TT

@@BoNyKiD Raoh was pretty universally agreed to be one of the best characters in the game lmao. He could instantly put out a giant hitbox around his entire body.
@@JoelBurger And the only way to not guard break with knowledge characters was to guard and unguard multiple times and then Roah users said that's cheating 😔 weird times
My goats...
same here, the one and only game i had to import
Nice profile picture
One of my favorite as well.
the little details in this game made it so amazing. Ill never forget accidentally running heie's dragon of darkness flame super into myself and discovering it gives him a powerup. Greatest anime fighting game of all time
Wow I didn't know that myself!
Sena being unstoppable?? Sounds lore-accurate to me
Props to the Battle Stadium DON jump scare.
I wonder how many people clicked off...
@@GuileWinQuote Probably the 10 or so people who got screwed out of unlocking all the chars via a random slot machine.
Wonder how many people didn’t read the title?
You should have put Fighting for One Piece, that'd have scared folks away for sure.
@@GuileWinQuotewait, is battle stadium don a notoriously bad game or something? I’ve never heard about it
I was a huge D Gray Man fan at the time, and I remember Lenalee being my main cheese character.
God, I have nothing but memories about this game.
It's crazy how Shaman King is no longer a Shueisha property, like this game is insane.
I remember being in a GameStop as a kid and seeing this game on the DS shelf. I wanted it so bad, but my parents wouldn't let me, because it was the early 2010's, and there was this weird stigma for media that was "too Japanese", at least where I lived.
Racist assholes
Oh god, haven't heard about this series for _quite_ a while...
Thinking about it, the character panel sizes were similar to the Ratio system, effectively making the games a ratio-based Tag game before the system was adopted by the MvC2 Community, in a way. (It even has its own 4 gods equivalent: Kid Buu, Raoh, Edajima & Sasuke. All 4 takes up 7 panels _at least_ .)
Characters (Playable & assists) also come in 3 types: *Power/力* (red), *Smarts/知* (Green) and *Comedy/笑* (Yellow) and are effective against one another in a RPS system (力>知>笑>力>...).
Kid buu only has a 6 koma for power type and comedy type, and raoh starts at 6 but edajima and sasuke both start at 7
The days of playing this w/ voice chat w/ the GameFAQ crew 😎.
This and Mario Kart DS were my go-tos back when McDonald’s offered FREE WiFi (Telstra) for Nintendo DS users.
This comment just teleported me back to middle school in the mid-late 2000’s
To this day I really wish they made a film based on this premise
JUS was, and still is the greatest Jump videogame there has ever been. It's such a shame that there has never been anything else like it and instead we have Jump Force now.
The days playing online in the Gamefaq boards are something I look back on really fondly.
I FUCKING LOVE JUMP ULTIMATE STARS GRAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I like how you refered to jotaro as just the guy from the capcom fighting game
Hardly anyone in the US knew of him in 2006.
So glad you covered Jump Ultimate Stars. It was the only time I ever imported a video game and spent most of the Wii/DS generation playing it over Smash Bros. maxing out the in-game playtime hours.
When the jump is force
This is one of my favorite fighting games of all time. I want so badly for us to get a modern Jump game in a similar style to this, with a roster that's as expansive and varied. This game is what got me interested in series like Reborn and Eyeshield 21, so I have a lot of love for it
Always good to see someone else prefer manga over anime. Keep it up.
Please also review Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax which is also Manga and Light Novel Crossover Fighting Game from Dengeki Bunko by ASCII Media Works.
that game has the craziest version of Akira from virtua fighter, i loved him in it
That was definitely one I enjoyed coming back to once I was more well versed in its series
LETS GO MY FAVORITE DS FIGHTING GAME
This game (or super stars I forget which) introduced me to the concept of counterplay with its weakness system (brawn>brain>funny>brawn) I was a super big Big 3 fan so of course I got the biggest Naruto and Luffy panels on my team. I thought I was hot shit. My friend goes “alright you asked for this” and kicked my ass with a Bobobo. What a time.
The Marvel Vs. Capcom of Platform Fighters. And 3Koma Trunks combo is an experience
this is the first game i imported...got me to read/watch so many manga/anime that have stuck with me to this day...Reborn, Eyeshield 21, and the goat of goats Ginatama
I had Jump Ultimate Stars, played it constantly . Loved playing as Yugi, Bobobo, Jotaro and Kenshiro
If they'd just stop fucking around and make "Jump Infinite Stars" just like JUS for the recent Xbox , PS and Switch with all the same characters and of course more recent series like JJK, Demon Slayer, BNHA and etf.... we'd be living it UP .
I loved that you could save and play as your opponents team after playing them online It was cool seeing the different builds
I miss 2d anime/manga games, I hope they start making a comeback it would be cool to a modern version of this crossover that isn't tied down to weird Zack Sneider renders.
yeah if they do 3D models they oughta be cel-shaded like several other anime games do
I'm not the best at fighters, but I'll get this game for my modded 3DS just because im a huge fan of comic history and especially the more lesser known ones. The fact that they acknowledged Jump's gag manga history unlike Jump Force already makes it based.
I bought this game for my little brother one Christmas. After I saw him playing it, I wish I had kept it for myself 😂😂
The pannel mechanic blew my mind, if shonen jump made a game like this again it would be a instant buy
The description is so true, jump ultimate stars is peak and ive been waiting for a remake for YEARS
They only need to make it 3D and stop the jojo spam online
What I really loved about out this game as well, is you could play locally with your friends who didn’t own a copy. The game basically let you play a free trial version over LAN with anyone who had a DS, it was great at school and sleepovers.
the sprite work for this game is so legendary
Fantastic game, thank you for covering it! I played back in the 2000s and still play today (vids on my channel!) and have yet to find another fighting game that grips me quite as well.
The meta in the western playerbase evolved to supportless due to just how varied and strong supports could be. Meanwhile the remaining JP players tend to have a “no holds barred” approach where anything goes outside of the hacked koma
God, your video list hit me like a nostalgia nuke. Even some of my old matches are in there.
Never played this one for myself, but the various gimmicks about manga are so creative!
It's funny that what first hooked me onto some of these Shonen Jump series were great games like Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2.
That presentation with the panels for team construction and the battles on the magazine pages is so damn clever!
Hey! This game sprites were also used in other fighting games like Mugen! Thanks for the wonderful video!
Frieren is the star of the show for me right now in Viz; while Shonen has at least 8 I read every month.
this game is so goated, i played a shit ton of it with friends, we all had flashcards (2007/2008) and at first we played this game with a basic manual but later when a translation patch came, we moved to that
the characters going black and white as their life get's reduced is so satisfying
i think i'll download it again and play the campaign
This was one of the first games I actually went through the effort to import, both Super Stars and Ultimate Stars
I remember playing this with a DS emulator for hours every day as a kid, it was all in japanese too so i had to look up guides online
Didnt expect a thumbnail with Don Patch to be on my reccomended today
Thank you for covering Jump Ultimate Stars!
It's wild seeing Kazuki from Buso Renkin in a video game.
Hearing all these now obscure manga being listed got me like _whoa._ Imagine if they did this with present-day Jump's manga lineup...
I remember you showed me this game. I can still remember struggling to put my team together, I know Train was one of the characters, and sadly forgotten the other 2. Still wish i had my own to fight ya.
Man, now that we're covering licensed and Japanese games, I have hopes we'll see an episode covering the Climax Heroes saga of Kamen Rider games
But seriously, thanks for talking about this one!
Sirlin-poster got me, lol.
Oh well.
Holy shit, this felt like a short walk through a forgotten part of my childhood
Amazing video :)
as a nougami neuro fam, my brain exploded knowing that both neuro and yako are in this game, and now i want to play this. ahhhh thats siiiiiiiick. thanks for sharing such a cool video btw!
Man, I think is one of the few Japan-Only games I imported back in the day. Had a lot of fun with it.
This game was ahead of its time. Feels like the newer ones are just fan service.
This game introduced me to many great mangas. Saint Seiya and Yu Yu Hakusho have become favorites of mine.
Honestly it's my favorite Jump game, having Light do something of use in a game was such a cool concept to me. Same with being able to play as Tsuna, although his moveset was more joke-based. Seeing Slam Dunk and Gintama in a game was awesome.
Sick content as always , thank you Mr Guile Quote
Thank you for watching 🙇
Great video! Always heard great things about the Jump DS games, cool that there's a translated version now
We need more Jump games like *this* to come stateside! Anything to get the taste of Jump Force out of our mouths...
This is so much better than jump Force
This game looks so cute and creative…
and you’re cooking 🔥 with Capcom vs. Shonen Jump.
Not only would I love to see those characters under Vs. series like mechanics, but the Denji vs. Leon matchup would be legendary.
Shonen Jump FighterZ should be a thing by now
I went by Durango on Jump Ultimate Stars.
XD
I wish they would make more games like this for the modern consoles, but alas, all the big companies are interested in nowadays are mostly AAA level games that just copies off other successful titles, and it's not like any Indie dev can just afford to get the rights to make a Jump Super Stars sequel...
XD
The soundtrack is also very amazing especially in the Sky and the City stages.
I love this game. So much. We really just need a remade version of this with modern characters, still in the pixel art style.
Dang this game had way more going on than I expected. That panel function is really neat.
i wanted this game so badly when i was a kid. the idea of a game even similar to smash bros on DS was incredible to me. if only they localized this game TT_TT
