I will never understand people who think their best chance at love is to immediately start the conversation with creepy roleplay fetish shit.
The only asterisks I do is just *hugs* and that's only for friends because we live on like, opposite sides of the world. Wouldn't do that for a stranger.
I really believe they watch wayyyyyyy too much anime and just think that those fantasy worlds are how it all works.
What I don't get is being angry at rejection for it. I mean, that's some terrible self-awareness there, one should be aware when one's very specific kinks (spontaneous+ fetish) puts them in the minority... I mean, coming right out with it *is* a great way to filter out people not interested in that but they should at least know that is going to be like 99.9% of people they contact.

I think the asterisks roleplay thing comes from having a lot of online-only friendships/relationships, thus the only way to convey body language is intentionally clarifying it’s body language. BUT when you do that with people who have more in-person relationships it’s weird at best and awful at worst. They can also idealize what they would do, playing out any romanticized idea of how to court someone. It’s a strange subculture for sure.
Y e a h, I'm essentially that explanation but at least I also have the self-awareness to know when, what amount, and what kind is appropriate and who with, I can only imagine they're doubly or triply deep into the sub-culture or something, especially since this video still absolutely annihilates my soul with cringe all the same.

I also know a couple of people who use it casually in general spaces. It's whatever. They aren't doing anything flirty or invasive. So folks that get upset usually just don't like the association.

yeah as someone who used to do this, I typically did it because I was desperately trying to recreate the idea of being close to someone IRL. When me and my bf (now fiance) did this, I would try to recreate whatever he wrote. Like if he was like -puts arm around you- I'd hug myself. I was lonely, even with the few people I DID know IRL. For me at least it was an attempt at getting affection I desperately needed while also offering the same affection to them. It's not acceptable to jump right into fetish stuff though

I roleplay a lot online. I have never met another roleplayer that does this in a serious manner. This feels like something us in our 30s did in our teens. I cant believe its still a "thing"

my favorite usage of asterisks is by going "spins rapidly towards you" or anything involving spinning, but sometimes "breaks in through wall" is used for when i join a goofy lighthearted convo ! most of my friend groups are comfortable with this and sometimes play along but ive thankfully never saw someone in person that does this

What's interesting is the people in question usually seem intelligent. The writing is obviously creative, and often well-written and grammatically correct. And still, the lack of self-awareness and respect is astounding.
Asterisk roleplay is *only* for people who you have a close enough relationship with, that are okay with it. You do not use it to flirt with other people, you do not use it to interact with strangers. It's creepy, it's cringey, and it's inappropriate.
This is why I used my old number that I don't have anymore at Kroger. Not for stalkers, but like, there's so much crap someone can use when they have that number.
for what it's worth, jack, i live on a farm and there's plenty of horses here and when you made that sound i was like "man that's fucking accurate"

Honestly this is what not to do in a roleplay as well as a serious what not to do irl. It’s what gives the role playing scene such a bad name in general.

We ask first if you’re up for furry related RP first, without being weird. It’s a common courtesy that some of them do not know.

The creepiness is vaguely familiar in the worst way imaginable
As someone who does text based roleplay (think D&D but instead of using your voice you type out your characters dialogue and actions, using asterisks to indicate action and quotations to indicate dialogue) this hurts my soul. It can be fine to do stuff like this if you know that whoever you are talking to is fine with it, but NEVER open with it if you don't know.
