The most common mistake is that people would just build a town beside the highway and connect with the opposite town then the highway. That would cause a lot of industrial-commercial crossover and lead to heavy traffic. You said it's better to have everything in one small town instead of the entire town full of one industries or just residences and commercial area. That's so true. It isolates the traffic and prevent them from sending stuff across two towns and stress the connecting roads...

That spot had a big mistake by having the trams turn right off the four lane boulevard tram. Never do that. Those trams were forced to make a right turn in front of left turning traffic. Then they had to from the right lane make a left turn across main line traffic. Very important with trams to minimize their crossing of lanes, especially traffic flowing same direction else they cause more traffic than they solve. Only use the four lane boulevard tram when next turn will be left. Use two lane or a six lane with tram if next turn is a right to keep them out of traffic. This was a fun watch, My only issue with traffic manager in that style is how It turn cars into mini-railed trains, or as if every car in the city is a self driving AI that know exactly what they are doing with out screwing up the lanes. in the plus side, this make me looking forward for the day where all/most cars turn into an AI driving car with infrastructures that direct cars in a way similar to what traffic manager is doing.
Nice fixes, awesome! This is a really pretty city as well, nicely organised and impressed by all the types of transport for a relatively small town. Props to whoever made it.
This was an interesting look into some of the traffic management options available in Cities: Skylines. As my cities grow, that's one of the areas I struggle a bit with. One thing I'm absolutely not in the habit of using are the roundabouts, which I just don't see in use where I live in Canada. I am finding that limiting intersections on my main roads does help a ton in keeping traffic moving, as well as dispersing the traffic flow as much as possible by giving alternate routes, or having residential areas surrounding a commercial area, so the traffic is flowing in from several different directions, using multiple streets, as opposed to all getting funneled onto a single street that gets gridlocked. Or having a residential area with work zones in opposite directions so the residents will flow in 2 or more different directions to get to work, instead of all going the same way, on the same streets. It was amazing to see how much traffic flow can be improved though, just by changing lane management, especially at intersections.
The solutions are real and excellent, however, for all those saying "Genius!!!" "Ship it to our planning board!" I direct you to 1:14 . " It's also on unlimited money..." Read that as "Insane taxes"
Also in real life you can't just say "eh, there aren't too many skyscrappers in this section, let's just knock them down and place a roundabout there instead". I mean you can, I guess, but it doesn't tend to go over well.
I'm not much of a designer.... But I LOVE the traffic-management side of Skylines. I would love a set of scenarios that base it's gameplay on what Biffa is doing in this series. _-"Town recently boomed into a sprawling city, but its traffic needs an overhaul - Using TM and public transport, bring traffic congestion down to under 10% for 6 full months"_ Would pay full price for that kind of a DLC
That junction near the end (25:20) could be fixed by separating the tram from the road near the top left and then connecting the tram to the 3 way junction near the bottom right.... Then having the tram stop on the 'tram only road' before entering the intersection will help with buildup on one side, and then on the other side where the trams would be entering from the bottom right, placing the stop a little further back for queuing
loving your work, couple of occasions I've spotted around 10 and 17 mins where you could have had a straight on or a left as well as the "outside" lane.. epic work, such minor comments.. legend status imho
I once had terrible traffic along a main bridge from one island to the other. Turns out that the entire bridge was flooded and all the cars were being swept away by the sea.
Hey biffa, i am watching your videos for some time now and i see you're doing almost everything perfectly in your city fix, there is one thing, a tiny little thing, that could make 5% traffic flow difference. This is the thing: I see you're sometimes making an exit/entrance of a roundabout or highway very sharp. This causes the drivers to slow down, and go slowly through the exit/entrance. If you make this more smooth, you'll have a smoother traffic flow. If you don't know what i mean, look at 11.02 for example, it's almost 90°
My current city has traffic at around 80%, but there are some hotspots that I seem to be unable to do much with (without tonnes of demolition). Would such a city interest you to look at?

12:43 Biffa turns off "you can go straight through", at the same time saying "you can go straight through". In other words, he turned off the "straight through" sign at the slip road, where it was connected to the roundabout. The traffic wasn't too terrible though, it coped with it! :D
I don't recall where, but I remember hearing someplace that traffic flow, both with cars and foot pedestrians, can be simulated and calculated using models and functions based on fluid dynamics. All this just hammers home just how accurate that is. Individual people may act of their own free will, but scale up and broaden your scope enough, and as a whole, large populations move and behave shockingly similarly to fluids in closed environments, and it fascinates me.

The game is highly overwhelming, but enjoyable to watch nonetheless.
Biffa, Come fix my actual city of Sherman Texas.
"what are you doing?? now you dont exist!" imagine hearing that while you are driving on the road! XD
Mayors dont want you to know about this fix.
_-"Town recently boomed into a sprawling city, but its traffic needs an overhaul - Using TM and public transport, bring traffic congestion down to under 10% for 6 full months"_
Would pay full price for that kind of a DLC
I have learnt so much from your videos, thank you 😁 and I share your love of Yorkshire Tea 😍
Nice :-)
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines saying that I have a city at the minute that has just turned to crap, tempted to send it to you I've tried everything!
Damn, that whole area is just roads from roundabouts going to roundabouts with roads to other roundabouts. What a mess.
Sounds like the UK!

loving your work, couple of occasions I've spotted around 10 and 17 mins where you could have had a straight on or a left as well as the "outside" lane.. epic work, such minor comments.. legend status imho
3:01 Biffa ADDING traffic lights 😱
They CAN help some situations. ^^
Shhhhhh! :-)
I used to watch you only once per month playing hermitcraft but now i watch your cities skylines every day;
I once had terrible traffic along a main bridge from one island to the other. Turns out that the entire bridge was flooded and all the cars were being swept away by the sea.
Yikes! :-)
The added text on screen quips are a delight!! Excellent video as always :-)
Hehe, thanks :-)
im studying graph theory... this actually is a great recommendation :P
If you don't know what i mean, look at 11.02 for example, it's almost 90°
i don't even own this game.
lol
You should get it, its awesome
yall i like stay up till 3 am watching these videos.
This game looks amazing.
Should be mandatory for all mayors of major cities.
Thank you for explaining what the crisscrossing arrows mean!
This blows my mind. Why aren’t more cities using this...
"Lets make a small roundabout"
*make a huge roundabout*
Well, at least its not a norweigan roundabout that you barely can drive a bus through.
Always a joy to see everything running again. Good job as always :)
Thank you Wolfy Luna :-)
15:35 You made this district a "no heave traffic area" but it does not seem to work. There are still trucks going thru :/
My current city has traffic at around 80%, but there are some hotspots that I seem to be unable to do much with (without tonnes of demolition). Would such a city interest you to look at?
I just love watching you fix traffic. some of the best content ever! Thanks Biffa! *sips tea* (Yorkshire gold obviously*
Thank you Maradnus & enjoy the perfect cup of tea! :-)
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines Kettle is on i shall brew an extra cup ;)
Damn, his sense of satisfaction when traffic is cleared 😂😂😂😂
I just watched this whole video and I've never even heard of City: Skylines before.
Did you enjoy it? Hope so 😁👍
Biffa Plays Indie Games Yeah it was a nice video. Made me want to try out that game.
@@marks9444 I'd played the game before I found Biffa, and my traffic was a disaster so I quit. Then quite some time later I watched Biffa and it inspired me to play again. My newer city is quite nice!
Avona Star that’s pretty cool
@@marks9444 I looked at my city again after I commented and I have 96k population with 86% traffic quality :) I should extend the metro further to the south but it looks pretty good! ^_^
Have never seen this game before, but it looks fabulous.
Creating your city in Skyline and sending it to him to improve the traffic of your city
I bet the people in Bergen Norway would have loved to see you fix their incredible real world traffic jams that looks exactly like the traffic did in the beginning here. They probably have one of the most fragile road systems in the world. Every time theres a small hickup, a lane closure or something like that somewhere, all the freeways going through the city and the surrounding areas will come to a complete stand still. Im talking traffic in all directions stopped, 10 miles.

Is it possible to get city's like that, to practice ? without creating our own city ?
Hi Biffa. You're always fixing cities but have you ever tried breaking one?
I have a city and the only problem with it, (Apart from maybe the metro is a little messy) is that everything is working too well! people are too happy, the cities making to much money, nobodies getting stuck on the roads. It's wonderful. Please help me ruin it I don't want people to be able to go anywhere.

@@PerfectAlibi1 it solves everything!
12:43 Biffa turns off "you can go straight through", at the same time saying "you can go straight through". In other words, he turned off the "straight through" sign at the slip road, where it was connected to the roundabout. The traffic wasn't too terrible though, it coped with it! :D
i bought this game because of your videos, i'm not disappointed
Nice :-)
8:51 4 lanes going into 3 lanes is bat lane mathematics, biffa what are you DOING?!
Battle of the Yorkshire Tea: Biffa vs. The Spiffing Brit.
:-)
I don't recall where, but I remember hearing someplace that traffic flow, both with cars and foot pedestrians, can be simulated and calculated using models and functions based on fluid dynamics. All this just hammers home just how accurate that is. Individual people may act of their own free will, but scale up and broaden your scope enough, and as a whole, large populations move and behave shockingly similarly to fluids in closed environments, and it fascinates me.
Awwww yes, a day with city fix is a day when I get *my* fix.
:-)
I love me some roundabouts in my cities. Saw the roundabout builder and downloaded. Thanks! That'll come in handy :)
Or you could have remove all the "unique" road design and replace it with a 6-lanes oval-bout
stacked roundabouts would work to every car can choose its own circle
Gamer's are a weird bunch. I just spent 26 minutes watching a guy fix the horribly congested traffic of a virtual city in a game I do not play. I essentially watched city planning in action. Kudos on the work, it was engaging, your commentary drew me in and all of a sudden 24 min had passed.
you can ban types of vehicles with traffic manager mod instead of making little district
He tries to stick with the mods the city author used for consistency :)
@@elise3455 yeah and he use traffic manager all time for lanes management, traffic lights and lane connections so why don't use it to ban vehicles too
