That way, clips from RT, where needed, can be cherry picked to not have swearing in them, and maybe it would be worth it for the stream where RT builds the city to have a family friendly version of the highlights, that just like, doesn't have any swearing clips in it.

Exactly, single-entrancitis as I like to call it. Everything gets funneled into a few junctions. Fix that and you will reduce the amount of traffic on those saturated junctions immensely.

There is something wrong in this video. With all of those problems, it's impossible for the city to grow that big. I don't whats happen before he starts the video, but something is wrong.
One thing that I have noticed as a recurring problem with most of these cities is that people use motorways to divide the city rather than connect it. So if someone has to drive from one district to one just the other side of the motorway from them, they have to go in the motorway rather than just driving over a bridge in a very short journey... The problem with this is that it inflates the amount of traffic going through motorway junctions, the motorways should make it easier to get from one side of the city to the other, not be necessary to travel 1 block across to get to work!
Yes, this is a particularly bad city because not only do they have to take a motorway to get to another district that's only a few tiles away, but it's also a long and convoluted journey on the motorway.
Problems, right off the bat: Not enough non-highway paths between city regions! And really long, long blocks in the grid structure. Bless Biffa for working to get around that without re-designing the city. ETA - public transit didn't seem to be helping much at the start, and it's not a very walk/bike friendly city. Making walking/bike highways throughout will also take cars off the road. :)
Yeah seems like the whole city is built there, but then just ended improving... no used bus routes, subway system not complete, no shortcuts, not many ways to enter and leave... etc
4:10 the best way to fix a cloverleaf is to rip it out and replace it with a stack, turbine, or similar. Cloverleafs are terrible, terrible intersections - and so is any variant of it that has onramps going straight into offramps - because entering and exiting traffic has to cross each other in the same spot. IRL cloverleafs are archaic remnants of the post WW2 era when the motorway network was heavily expanded, and they're one of the main causes for traffic jams and multi-car pileups just from the crossing streams of vehicles. Throughout Europe most of them are or already have been rebuilt to better separate the on- and off-ramps, with Italy having some of the most creative versions I've ever seen because they also add in toll boths

Plant trees along roads! Not just for pretty (and environment) but for some reason trees encourage people to drive slower and more courteously. Reduces crime. Reduces (no one knows why) actually reduces traffic. Many other benefits for traffic benefits; not just for pretty. Retired librarian

13:03 -- Biffa, Tisk, Tisk, Tisk - forcing traffic to go straight on after the first 2 intersection roads after that pick your lane intersection... not a mistake I'd have expected from you 😜 . Now all the other side streets after that have just been rendered 1/2 half capacity 1 way streets effectively as there's no possible way for anyone to reach the left turn lane to turn onto those streets due to no lane changing allowed beyond that first intersection. I found that setup kind of funny all things considered. Definitely shows even the best of us still make mistakes and can sometimes miss the obvious.

I recently experienced the vehicle limit as my second city was approaching 100k. Businesses had no goods, industry had nowhere to put their goods, there were barely any cars on the road and most of my metro was gone, so nobody was getting around. Cleared traffic once and grew the city another 50k with no issues
Biffa if you have a road piece without a Node, there is a way to force a node to appear by making it a junction and then deleting the side road. The node will stay where the junction was. ;)

Nice video as usuall! From the start you can tell that the city lacks a few major roads to connect the different districts to each other. But you are good at fixing cities so you did a fairly good job. Of course if one is picky you could say that there were still a few things to improved still but it is hard to cover absolutely everything in a city that starts from that type of traffic problems! Keep it going it's a very good start the player should be able to improve from here

I notice a lot of people don't use any kind of bypasses. It's always good to think about how to get to the far side of the city without going through it, so having an elevated road over the city, or a highway through the middle can be really useful. You then set it up so it goes straight through with perhaps only off ramps, but no on ramps. That helps distribute traffic better so it's not all queuing up to enter the city.
I love watching your traffic fix videos biffa, even the old ones. You have inspired me to download the traffic manager mod and download a few cities with bad traffic off the steam Workshop and fix the traffic in them. It's a challenge and a bit frustrating at times but also quite satisfying.
I just want to start off by saying I love the series, it's fun to watch you solve these traffic efficiency problems. I'm having this thought about the round-a--bout at 8:15. To me it seems like a better solution to use a triangle shaped junction seeing as how it only has 3 inputs. What do you think?
Next time you do one that is a long fix, maybe make the videos a series like part 1 through 3 or something. I would love to see all the changes instead of going from 8% to 67%.
Another way to do what you did at 8:44 is to have A roundabout underneath an overpass.... with off ramps onto the roudabout i've seen that a lot in real life in Brazil. The overpass just goes straight across no deviding or anything or any slowing down.

I like to use the Tool for only Allowing certain Traffic on roads, Got a highway to a intersection? Few nodes earlier make a offramp for emergency & garbage only.. A Tunnel for emergency, busses & garbage can cut across a busy street aswell. Residential traffic may get a offramp to Trucks areas, maybe emergency and garbage can use it aswell, depends on how much Flow there is! Love that Tool

Good going, excellent. The only time I've had traffic that bad is when I've accidentally turned off despawning. I keep doing it by mistake.., bally annoying, the last time though it took hours to build up to carmageddon stage. Where you sort out one problem and create twenty others.... I've noticed that the concept of on/off ramps for major roads is lost on most people. A real span of freeway may have 100 exists on it, yet people make their games with only one exit and entrance into a whole section of city.
at 12:56 you forcing everybody to go on straight throughout the whole road, nobody can turn left anymore. there are no nodes between the exits to switch lanes

Afaik the lane-picking thing only works when going straight on. Which means, the option does basically nothing at a roundabout. But the lane-thing does work anyway. The most left straight lane is leading to the most left lane (which exits in the next node) and the other one is feeding the other ones. So you basically created a turbo-roundabout, where you pick your destination before entering.
I'm very proud of my city which is 600K population, max cars, and 81% traffic with a grid system no less and full industry, all three campuses, 2 airports, 6 ports, 4 cargo rail terminals, and 2 major parks.
I think that the reason you get vehicles overlapping is because the route that a car will take is mapped when the vehicle spawns, and it won't change if the road changes. So what you have is old traffic following the old route (this is also the cause of vehicles driving straight through the middle of roundabouts) overlapping with new traffic following the new routes.
Sometimes if there are loads of pedestrians, it’ll block the cars turning right or left, blocking the intersecting road and clogging up the road it’s from. So I sometimes build walkway bridges above the intersection over busy crosswalks. And it helps a lot
Removing roundabouts? Who are you and what have you done with the real Biffa??! ;p That junction was just odd for what it did. This whole series has been great for learning traffic control for CS. Next series (when ready) I'd like to see a trains and metro focus, that is, building a city around the trains and metro as the priority travel routes.
At 13:10, anyone that doesn't want to take the first left is stuck in the right lane. They can't move back over for any of the following junctions.

There are not enough access points between the districts. It needs bridges over the highways and more ramps to connect everything.

This was definitely set up just for this fix. Getting to 99 is an art I haven't mastered. So, my respect to the one who managed this piece of traffic jam art!

I just wish you put in the before ... AND after the transit additions. It's nice to see how many less cars, as that's kinda the theme of this video, but it would be nice to see how many more people are taking transit too. Great video as always.
I like to use the Tool for only Allowing certain Traffic on roads, Got a highway to a intersection? Few nodes earlier make a offramp for emergency & garbage only..
A Tunnel for emergency, busses & garbage can cut across a busy street aswell.
Residential traffic may get a offramp to Trucks areas, maybe emergency and garbage can use it aswell, depends on how much Flow there is!

Good going, excellent. The only time I've had traffic that bad is when I've accidentally turned off despawning. I keep doing it by mistake.., bally annoying, the last time though it took hours to build up to carmageddon stage. Where you sort out one problem and create twenty others.... At least it's now the first thing on my check list. ha ha ha ha ha. What am I like. :D

12:57 Mmhh?! Maybe wrong, but, no car can turn left all along the road, because:
if they start the road on the left lane, they turn left at 1st intersection (forced)
if they start the road on right lane, they will drive all along the road because lanes mathematics (forced)
and they gain back ability to turn left or right on the next road (if intersection allow it, of course).

8:31 I don’t like that roundabout, it’s that the highway ends, there needs to be a junction, you do that, you get that traffic off already from the cloverleaf junction
17:54 the lane mathematics are a bit funky. I would have one lane going on, 2 going off then those 2 lanes split

I have never played this game... but I find these videos fascinating.
Absolutely fantastic biffa, I tried to make a connection like I saw in euro truck, but when my city grew up the traffic was awful Haha, after that I changed to a better T junction
This channel and game both express just how much city planners have to think about. We really could have whole interstate backups without them.

I've noticed that the concept of on/off ramps for major roads is lost on most people. A real span of freeway may have 100 exists on it, yet people make their games with only one exit and entrance into a whole section of city.

at 12:56 you forcing everybody to go on straight throughout the whole road, nobody can turn left anymore. there are no nodes between the exits to switch lanes

Afaik the lane-picking thing only works when going straight on. Which means, the option does basically nothing at a roundabout.
But the lane-thing does work anyway. The most left straight lane is leading to the most left lane (which exits in the next node) and the other one is feeding the other ones. So you basically created a turbo-roundabout, where you pick your destination before entering.
I'm very proud of my city which is 600K population, max cars, and 81% traffic with a grid system no less and full industry, all three campuses, 2 airports, 6 ports, 4 cargo rail terminals, and 2 major parks.
I think that the reason you get vehicles overlapping is because the route that a car will take is mapped when the vehicle spawns, and it won't change if the road changes. So what you have is old traffic following the old route (this is also the cause of vehicles driving straight through the middle of roundabouts) overlapping with new traffic following the new routes.

Sometimes if there are loads of pedestrians, it’ll block the cars turning right or left, blocking the intersecting road and clogging up the road it’s from. So I sometimes build walkway bridges above the intersection over busy crosswalks. And it helps a lot

This whole series has been great for learning traffic control for CS.
Next series (when ready) I'd like to see a trains and metro focus, that is, building a city around the trains and metro as the priority travel routes.
