1:46 I don’t think people recognize this show nearly enough for its absolutely beautiful music. The way that you can feel each key on the piano being struck, it adds so much weight to the scene, and it makes Armin’s reaction so much more powerful.

Season 4 Eren is a sloppy mess
As in for real? Eren becomes a menace and cold-blooded on the outside. But on the inside, he is just like his teenage self who is a crybaby who just wants to be with his so-called friends and forever loving family member to his household Mikasa. I feel a little bad for him at a glance and he brought upon himself. He just manipulates the past and uses Zeke for activating the Rumbling, and his inner world yet not complete in his imagination. Thinking Eren is elated from the result? Nein, naturalich nicht. This anime reminds me of William Shakespearse's Macbeth where in Dunsinane Hill that's where Macduff and Macbeth fought each other to the death and denied to Macbeth that he was cut in her mother's womb and very last moment, Macduff finally ends Macbeth's life and take his severed head inside the Dunsinane Castle and Malcolm finally replaces Macbeth's position as the king of Scotland. Remember guys, bad weeds will infinitely grow endlessly, our fight is not yet over. It is still just the beginning.
For me, all I needed from AOT was to land on two feets. This ending was not by any strech of imagination perfect. But it was good. Plot wise it had some problems but theme wise it give great conclusions to the main themes of story.
I think to understand Erens character and why he kills 80% of humanity, we must understand how the attack titan power works first. The truth lies behind the Power of the attack titan. The user of the attack titan can see memories of future users. Every titanshifter including the attack titan can see memories of past users. Therefore Eren can see his own future memories through Grishas memories of the future user.
Ok everything is clear to this point. One thing that is fundamentally important is that getting future memories of your self doesnt mean you can change or avoid this future. The future you see is set in stone. The actions you take after seeing this future are set in stone and will lead to this future. Doens't matter if you try to avoid or try to achieve this future. Your actions after seeing this future will lead to this future. Because there is a fixed timeline that cannot be changed. You basically need to see a future where seeing the future memory is what will lead you to experience this memory. And Eren got multiple future memories at once. That means the moment Eren saw his own future memories it had to be future memories he had to see to lead him to do what he saw in this exact memories. I dont know if its understandable. So in short basically Eren seeing himself commiting genocide was the cause what led to Eren commiting genocide. But how are your future memories determined? Why did Eren had to see this exact future and not any other future?
Eren was asking himself this same question. Because he didnt know how it was determined which memories he would get. The memories you get are determined and set in stone but how exactly is it determined? For eren the only reasonable explanation as to which future memories you would see are determined by your personality and wishes. In the paths with armin he spaculates that he wanted to protect his friends and thats why he'll try to kill everyone else. But he realizes that sasha and hange died so this couldnt be the real reason. He thought this will only happen because Eren himself is the one who saw his own future memories. He is the one who imagined as a kid that the world would be empty lands with no humans. Eren was basically questioning himself and blaming himself for commiting genocide because he wouldnt understand the true meaning of why he saw those memories and why it had to lead to this point. In his head Eradicating 80% of humanity will happen because an idiot like himself came in contact with such a power. Because that was his deepest idiotic childhood wish to how the world should be. With this realization and after all efforts of trying and trying to avoid this outcome and seeing that all his efforts trying to avoid this outcome are leading him more and more to this outcome and seeing that everything is set in stone and still playing out exactly as he saw in his memories he just gave in to his future. This is what broke him so much to the point that he gave up and didnt resist anymore. He accepted that his fucked up mind is the reason 80% will die. So he just kept moving forward and did what he had to do in his mind. He killed his own mom and will try to kill all humanity because he saw himself do it in the future. And since this future is 100% set in stone there is no point fighting it anymore right? Armin understood exactly what eren was thinking and feeling and didnt have an answer for him either. But he knew that eren was just in pain because of that. Eren didnt want to do any of this. He was just a slave to his own freedom. Armin is smart enough to understand the whole situation. That either him or eren cant do a thing to change the outcome. Once he realized that the only thing he could do for his friend was to comfort him by saying him he isnt alone in this. He is the one who planted this seed of an empty world in his head. Armin doesnt support mass murder he just supports his broken friend. I dont know if its bad writing or unrealistic. We cant tell how the human mind would react to having future memories where you see yourself killing everyone. But i can see why a character who is heavily influenced and even shaped by Sci-fi elements causes lots of confusion.
But there is actually another reasonable explanation as to how his future memories were determined and why eren got those memories. The truth lies within Ymirs wish to be freed from her love and suffering. To be freed from King Fritzs shackles. To be freed from a world without death. To be freed from this titan curse. To be freed from her own life.
Of course Ymir is also a very complex character but we can all agree that the mental state she is in is very bad to say the least. The only reason she lived was for King fritz and to serve him because she loved him. And that love is what kept her and the titan powers alive. She had the power to end her life at any point. Because her love kept her will to live in the paths. She lived in the paths for 2000 years where she basically is almighty. With all this power she could just die in an instant if she just wanted to but her love kept her will to live in the paths and serve King fritz. So to be able to be freed from her life was a pure mental thing for her. All it took was for her to see someone who is just as much in love with someone else as she is. This person was Mikasa. Eren told us that a specific action Mikasa will take leads to the outcome that titans no longer exist. Because when Ymir saw Mikasa killing Eren she realized she can overcome her love and put something else above this love. Like Mikasa put humanity over Eren, finally ymir could put her wishes above king fritz. And her wish was just too die along with the titan powers and end this suffering. But ymir had to see mikasa killing eren first and this would only happen if eren tried to kill the whole world. The only scenario to end the whole titan curse is for ymir to see someone who was deeply in love with the founder be the same person who kills the founder. In short you could say that Eren did what he did and everything happened how it happened because this was the only series of events that would lead to mikasa finally be able to make the decision to kill eren and helping ymir finally rest in peace therefore eradicating every last titan from this earth, which hey was erens main goal from episode 1 too. So was it all determined by ymir's wish to be free or by Erens deepest idiotic childhood wish to how the world should be after all?

Eren never showed any romantic interest in anyone until the final chapter. People didn't have a problem when he cried in front of Ramzi , or when he was about to be eaten in the uprising arc or when his mother died or when he cried at the end of season 2. Eren and the other scouts tried to be diplomatic with Annie, Reiner and Hoover. How did that go by the way? Many times the only thing you could do to stop violence is to be violent yourself. It even applies in our real world.

Secondly what could have been done was a test of the rumbling completely dismantling Marley. Future generations could keep the titans until eldians army was powerful enough, all the while they could engage in diplomacy with smaller countries. They could literally put another vow onto the titan ability in order so the future inheritor isn't evil. Also Gabi literally stopped hating eldians after that.

The composers carried this finale hard, made bad scenes tolerable and good scenes legendary.
The point was that even though eren saw everything the moment he kissed historia's hand, he saw that he had to kill innocent people otherwise the people he cared about would die. He saw that he had to be the villain, he saw that he had to die. Him crying is a sign that he was still human. Him saying he didnt want to die is that selfish intent that all humans have. Him saying he wanted to be with misaka is that love he had to throw away so that everyone could move on. In the end eren was still human. And he cared about his people to the point where he decided to make paradis and marley team up to defeat him so his friends would have enough time to live out their lives until paradis unnovoidable destruction.

I think that choice of predestination makes Eren a lot less interesting. It takes all of the agency away from him and makes him a plot device. If he wanted to complete the rumbling there were easier ways to do so. If he wanted to make his friends into heroes by killing him, there were also easier ways to do that since destroying the global fleet already prevented the possibility of retaliation. Before the finale Eren was someone who chose not to be free and to respond with violence instead, and being corrupted from his own delusions, and while capable of seeing the evil in his actions simply not caring about it because in his mind, his will is stronger. This rerouting at the last minute is much less interesting.

It's funny how Eren was moments away from certain death twice in the series and yet he never once showed a hint of this pathetic breakdown. First when he was eaten by a pure titan early on, all he could think of was how frustrated he is that he couldn't achieve his goals. The second time in the crystal caves, he was willing to be eaten because he thought it was for the best until Historia motivated him. Never cried over Mikasa or complain that he was about to die
he didnt until armin brough that topic up and because armin is his closest friend, notice that he told armin to never tell mikasa about any of this, he doesnt want people to know, we knew from the start he's a very stubborn individual

I think when you have a similar condition or in the same position like eren, maybe you will realize a lot. Back then he still a teenager, a naive teenager that want to save everyone around him by wiped out all of the titans cs its the only enemy that they know. I guess he is not knowing much thing about the past, the current, and the future. But when he got all of the things from historia, he changed. His mental got hit by a lot of things, and imo this is the best ending for aot. When you getting older, your mindset and your mental got improve, then he carried the burden of the world on his shoulders, everythings not simple anymore.

The problem is not even him breaking down and crying. The main problem with this scene is Yams trying to make us believe Eren had romantic feelings for Mikasa while there wasn't even a trace of it in all the previous 89 episodes/138 chapters.
Literally this; Eren has broken down before like with Ramzi or back in S3 P1 in the ice cave, but his reasoning behind crying made sense in those two instances. Here, it's because he doesn't want Mikasa to be with another man... come on

I’m sorry, I get Isayama was trying to convey Eren to be a multifaceted conflicted character and that even he has emotions. It’s just the fact that this felt like it came out of…nowhere. Like I get he wanted to run away from the conflict, but his feelings for Mikasa felt so hamfisted. He never throughout the series expressed this kind of affection towards her.
He never really got the chance too, he literally didn’t have a chance to convey those feelings towards her, before he became a victim of fate, his strong, upfront attitude as a kid made him neglect such feelings, also there have been plenty of implied moments where Eren did love her, we just needed a moment where Eren without that front, could finally drop all his guards and be honest with one of his friends, although pathetic, still had more than enough evidence put into it to justify it.
It didn t came out of nowhere, you just didn t pay attention to the actual story.
