As an anime fan for almost 25years now, I really hope that the anime industry grows more, but more than that, is that the ANIMATORS will benefit directly also, especially with better wages and work life balance.
Yeah I think way less people would be so open about piracy if the animators, and behind the scenes workers were treated better than they are currently. It almost feels like supporting platforms like crunchyroll only enforces the awful working conditions in place right now.

Netflix ticked me off years ago when they showed support for snime then cancelled most of the shows, never getting an ending. I’ll trust netflix with anime after I go back 3 years later to see if they manage to complete most of their projects. They are king in cancelling shows.
The BIGGEST issue I have with anime on Netflix is the Character Limitation (42) and Line Treatment (2) it has for subtitles. In other words if you are watching an anime with a lot of dialog or multiple characters speaking at the same time you will only get some, not all, of what is said. One example is Komi Can't Communicate where there is A LOT of written dialog and/or characters speaking. Unless you can speak and read Japanese you're not getting much of what is said.
With subtitles is the best way, with the japanese VA feel more accurate. Dubbed versions are horrible, no matter how "good" are the foreign VA. The same for movies in English or Kdramas in Korean, I cannot stand their dubbed versions to my languange. Feels weird.

@@Pluto.1079 and I was talking about subs becausr even with THAT limitation, it is better. If there is too much text, they break up the line and add other line based on the rules set up. Subtitles not necessarily need to translate every single word, they can adjust depending on the language and as long as the message keeps the intended meaning.
Its nice to see netflix producing anime, now we can know for certain series will be dropped after a season instead of waiting years hoping for season 2.

Netflix has been good at honoring the translations so far. The voice acting on their exclusive anime is spot on. It's as if they try to base English voice actors on the japanese actors as best as they can.

No only Englisgh, European dubbings are also great, in Edgerunners as production of Poland CD project was expectable that it will have good dubbings in Europe but like other random animes with Czech dubbing on Netflix really surprised me.
Netflix aren’t consistent and that a big issue in anime. The other main issue they have one season and then that’s it. A series has 5 season and Netflix is only showing the one it bought the license for.

As long as Oda is a part of production for The One Piece like he was for the original anime and the live action Im all for a One Piece with significantly better pacing
I don't think Oda needs to be a part of it. It was a big deal for live action because they're cutting out and amending a lot of the story, they condensed 45 episodes into 8 and the pacing wasn't even all that bad when that original 45 came out. but now they've got more than 20 years of chapters to work with, as long as they don't needlessly change the storyline they should be fine.
Netflix has a habit of taking exclusive license to shows and then doing nothing about dubbing them. That's the only thing I hate about them. Also no typesetting.
Hulu has an extensive anime library with classics and new ongoing anime. And some that crunchyroll doesn't have. I recommend, Eminence in shadow, and Reincarnated as a sword.
Amazing research, amazing grammar, no stutters, clear voice, entertaining backround clips, you could talk about paint drying and i would still waatch it you deserve more subs honestly
Their library is very small compared to crunchyroll, it needs to be about $4-6 otherwise thats pointless to do, imo nothing can beat crunchyrolls price even if its $10-15, for the amount of anime they have, being over 300-1000 anime titles they acquired w/ funimation. I like ur brilliant idea, I just will be surprised if it ever happens.

I would finish watching it tbh then just switch to the manga. The anime provides a lot more visual context that gets lost in the manga. But I think its best to read and watch at a certain point
@@ZellyJP True. I've heard that the panelling in later one piece chapters gets a little funny. I was reading some parts of Marineford and there were a lot of two-page spreads. I'd hate to read it physcially lol. But also the pacing was much better lol.
Netflix taking the crown from crunchyroll is just about the worst thing possible for the anime community. Sure, crunchyroll hasn't been great, but at least anime is their priority. Netflix has dozens of irons in the fire and just one of those is anime. It wouldn't be a focus for them. It doesn't really matter though, netflix won't take over. They will just take funimation's spot as the runner up. They will continue to be the casual anime fan's place to watch main stream shows. Hidive has a better shot in the long run imo. Until then, Netflix will continue to get a handful of exclusives every season and crunchyroll will remain the big boss of anime in NA.
I’m curious to see what Hulu does honestly because outside of crunchy role or other streaming services that only have anime Hulu has the most anime besides those services definitely more the Netflix does and curious to see what they do with Hulu original anime’s because I’ve noticed recently they have 4 or 5 anime that said they were Hulu originals and were all in there 1st season so it’s a pretty recent thing so interested to see where that goes

I went onto Netflix and the first thing I saw was Ayna and Deku smiling at me and I was so confused and in shock because I was literally watching My Hero Academia and Spy X Family on Crunchy roll the day before, and also hadn’t heard of Netflix added more anime.
@@pwrsocket I kinda figured. Also some why some countries get some shows and others don’t is because of licensing. Hosting platforms are bound legally by companies to only show certain shows in certain countries. That’s the case for studio ghibli films, Netflix is allowed to host them everywhere except the US and Japan, but HBO Max has the same films hosted in the US because they got the rights to do it from studio ghibli. I hope it does, even if the price is high it’s beyond worth it, you have a huge library of releases like jjk, Naruto one piece all one piece movies and they just won anime of the year, they are gonna become the crunchy roll slayer if they lower their prices by a few bucks and continue the one piece series.
My only problem with anime on Netflix was the absolutely HORRENDOUS handling of JoJo pt. 6 Stone Ocean… Batch releases every like 3-6 months, it was so f***ing ass. The build up for the hype around Stone Ocean was insaneeeee on Twitter, there were literally accounts dedicated to “Is Stone Ocean animated yet?” That would tweet everyday with massive followings for YEARS, no joke… they released like 12 episodes out of 36 or something for the first batch, everyone was hype to get something about Stone Ocean, but it was so s*it because in Japan they released everything at once or at least simulcasted, can’t remember entirely, what I do remember is everyone here in the West getting absolutely shafted by Netflix. The way it was released decimated the hype, nobody talked about it anymore cause everyone would binge the 12 episode batches then literally just F-off & wait till the next batch release. I remember finishing Stone Ocean 1 year after episode 1 released, cause of the abominable batch-release method. I’m glad to see Netflix stepping up to challenge the Crunchyroll monopoly, I just REALLY hope they learned from the handling of Stone Ocean to never do batch-releases again.
If you thought that was bad, Uncle from another world was another anime on there which would release one episode or so maybe once every few months or whenever. At least with CR there's usually a weekly episode as it comes out from Japan's services as well.

They have tons of asian tv and movies now. Many out of Korea and China or Tiawan. But some good Japanese series as well. Really enjoyed Fish Bowl Wives but I am strange that way.
I'm happy to have more competition in the anime space with Netflix, Crunchyroll, and HiDive all pushing each other. The perks of anime coming to Netflix specifically is that a dub is almost always guaranteed, but the downside is that it can take years or maybe even never for an anime to get a Bluray release. I'm glad Sentai recently gave us a physical release for Carole & Tuesday, but I'm not holding my breath for Cyberpunk Edgerunners because Little Witch Academia, another Trigger anime, has yet to see a Western Bluray release despite releasing in 2017.

One thing I haven’t heard a lot of talk about is Hulu which I find interesting because outside of anime only streaming services they have the most anime on there platform by far it’s actually pretty impressive considering it’s not an anime streaming platform I will say they have cut down on the number of anime they have had but it’s still quite impressive and all I’ve seen about 4 or 5 Hulu original anime’s they have on there which I think Is a pretty recent thing because there all in there 1st season so we will see how that pans out because I haven’t watched them to see if there are even good yet

One decision that Netflix made that I was confused about was their One Piece streaming. They made a huge jump from after ace's death straight to Egghead, skipping Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, and Wano.
i think if they start remaking old classics like one piece and reviving shows from "no season 2" hell like kimi no todoke, they will easily surpass any contest. providing anime is what everyone is doing but reviving shows can be netflix's brand

Better to just purchase the DVDs and BluRays for the things you like. Rip em to your own personal streaming platform on your home network, but the money more directly supports the companies that produce the content instead of the streaming platform. I do like CRs commenting system though. I don't know if Netflix has something like that, been a while.
This video is truly amazing, and I never really put more thought into this type of topic. Also, out of my opinion, crunchyroll is all about that money and makes most things for premium which is why i don't like it and prefer to switch to other platformers. Anyways, keep up the good work as always!

I would say Animation is the overarching medium, with Anime being its own genre. But I can see what youre saying and I think its all just how personal definition define anything animated.

Note only outside of Japan is even decaffeinated from other forms of animation. In Japanese, the term anime is used to refer to all animated works, regardless of style or origin.

They both include different genres. In Japan, all cartoons or animations are called "anime", for example. Anime is just the Japan-rooted representation of the notion of "animation"; saying "anime is a genre" is like saying "Bollywood is a genre" - kind of.
I think one of the huge issues crunchyroll has is the sheer number of new series they completely drop. Most anime on crunchyroll never get a second season and if they do it can be years apart which make it incredibly difficult to maintin interest.
I WANT Netflix to actually compete with Crunchyroll for 1 main reason of: it will widen the market of voice acting, and since Netflix has more money as a whole and is based in the US, we could see more talented people come out that would’ve otherwise never happened because voice acting is not a profitable space right now. The reason why seemingly every Japanese VA in anime seems so good and talented is because it’s a LEGITIMATE market and means of income, and making a name for yourself in Japan.

CR getting rid of comments deff hurt them a lot, I would always go to CR instead of Netflix because of the comments but now if its on netflix I am going there as the player is 10x better and the web UI is all around better so no reason to suffer navigating CR if I can watch it on netflix. I loved being able to check the comments before jumping into a new show or going to the comments after an amazing episode. Hulu use to be huge for anime but I never enjoyed the fact that dub and sub show as 2 separate episodes so it always switches back and forth when going to the next episode
Then one piece just isn’t for you🤷🏾♂️. It’s for binge watchers and long term viewers. The majority of one piece fans love the fact that it has 1000+ episodes.
Currently I'm watching Delicious in Dungeon. I like it so much even though I'm not usually into these dungeon middle age anime shows. Also gotta say that I didn't think it would be possible and was heavily sceptical but Netflix showed even me that live action can be good. I still prefer the anime except for Last Airbender. The Live Action adaptation has this mature vibe that I really like without being too mature. Also Big Pretender was amazing and Aggretsuko was like the cutest thing ever.
Also half the digital codes I ever got were expired when I bought the sealed Blu ray case from Walmart so those digital codes were always a limited time offer XD
In mexico, Netflix is in charge of dubbing one piece to spanish and they're also streaming new episodes of the egghead arc on sundays... thats why there are even less people with a crunchyroll subscription over here
Everytime I go to crunchy to watch something its hardly fully there, Like an anime might have 3 seasons but on there its only the last 2 (like tanya the evil) or just not having shows like one punch man, also no auto skip intro/outro like netflix atleast half has.
Considering how a lot of Netflix’s other endeavours such as mostly Films have failed I won’t be surprised if they ended up becoming just an Live Action TV & Anime exclusive only service one day
Blue eye samurai and cyberpunk edge runners are some of the best anime I have ever watched. I kinda ran out of things to watch in crunchyroll so I stopped my subscription for now and saw evagaleon, chainsaw man, and blue eye samurai. Now looking for more anime to watch cause I ran out of things to watch… again I have seen basically all the super popular anime from 23/24
How is anime a genre? It´s also more than a myth that Netflix anime or most of their shows have a high budget. There are exceptions but Netflix never = high budget. Weekly releases also existed on Netflix for quite some time and not just with anime. A few telenovelas did it too.
I do agree with crunchyroll saying we should support the artist, but I think I can still do that while pirating. I should support the artists. Is there any way to pirate but send money straight to the artists? If so, thanks. (I don't know how to do either.). I have never done either of these things ever. Nevermind, I just looked it up and learn't the websites could have malware. When I heard they have moderators I thought they would be like 100% safe and 100% operated under moral means. I have an intense fear of malware. I should not try to go on a pirating site until I get a computer science degree.
Main problem that I see with Crunchyroll that they doing only really limited number of translated laguages and app is not on a lot of devices. On LG and Samsung TVs is literally every streaming platform ... except of Crunchyroll. And also they cancelled Windows app and now is only web app ... great. Also that translations, like is atleast for me comfortable when I can see something in my native language and not all the time reading english subtitiles (English is not my native). Now is Crunchyroll under Sony which have money to invest into more platforms and better localisation but looks like they never do.
Impossible. Netflix with its few shows and popular animes added few months or even years after airing, cant compete with crunchyroll and it's simulcasts. this literally makes zero sense
The thing is when Netflix takes over they might do a thing if they monopolize the anime industry, like a different subscription for anime. This means that they will get more greedy increasing prices and changing the subscriptions, ofcourse this is meant by the long run if they fully monopolize the anime industry.

Netflix has been good at honoring the translations so far. The voice acting on their exclusive anime is spot on. It's as if they try to base English voice actors on the japanese actors as best as they can.

I don't think Oda needs to be a part of it. It was a big deal for live action because they're cutting out and amending a lot of the story, they condensed 45 episodes into 8 and the pacing wasn't even all that bad when that original 45 came out. but now they've got more than 20 years of chapters to work with, as long as they don't needlessly change the storyline they should be fine.

Hulu has an extensive anime library with classics and new ongoing anime. And some that crunchyroll doesn't have. I recommend, Eminence in shadow, and Reincarnated as a sword.

Their library is very small compared to crunchyroll, it needs to be about $4-6 otherwise thats pointless to do, imo nothing can beat crunchyrolls price even if its $10-15, for the amount of anime they have, being over 300-1000 anime titles they acquired w/ funimation. Netflix taking the crown from crunchyroll is just about the worst thing possible for the anime community. Sure, crunchyroll hasn't been great, but at least anime is their priority. Netflix has dozens of irons in the fire and just one of those is anime. It wouldn't be a focus for them.
It doesn't really matter though, netflix won't take over. They will just take funimation's spot as the runner up. They will continue to be the casual anime fan's place to watch main stream shows. Hidive has a better shot in the long run imo. Until then, Netflix will continue to get a handful of exclusives every season and crunchyroll will remain the big boss of anime in NA.

@@pwrsocket I kinda figured. Also some why some countries get some shows and others don’t is because of licensing. Hosting platforms are bound legally by companies to only show certain shows in certain countries. That’s the case for studio ghibli films, Netflix is allowed to host them everywhere except the US and Japan, but HBO Max has the same films hosted in the US because they got the rights to do it from studio ghibli. I hope it does, even if the price is high it’s beyond worth it, you have a huge library of releases like jjk, Naruto one piece all one piece movies and they just won anime of the year, they are gonna become the crunchy roll slayer if they lower their prices by a few bucks and continue the one piece series.
My only problem with anime on Netflix was the absolutely HORRENDOUS handling of JoJo pt. 6 Stone Ocean… Batch releases every like 3-6 months, it was so f***ing ass. The build up for the hype around Stone Ocean was insaneeeee on Twitter, there were literally accounts dedicated to “Is Stone Ocean animated yet?” That would tweet everyday with massive followings for YEARS, no joke… they released like 12 episodes out of 36 or something for the first batch, everyone was hype to get something about Stone Ocean, but it was so s*it because in Japan they released everything at once or at least simulcasted, can’t remember entirely, what I do remember is everyone here in the West getting absolutely shafted by Netflix. The way it was released decimated the hype, nobody talked about it anymore cause everyone would binge the 12 episode batches then literally just F-off & wait till the next batch release. I remember finishing Stone Ocean 1 year after episode 1 released, cause of the abominable batch-release method. I’m glad to see Netflix stepping up to challenge the Crunchyroll monopoly, I just REALLY hope they learned from the handling of Stone Ocean to never do batch-releases again.

Hey, early 2025, I just wanted to give an update for the last point, netflix is doing weekly releases and it's quite good
Back in the early days of Netflix streaming services they had a lot of anime and asian movies and shows. Netflix made the mistake of dropping them.

They have tons of asian tv and movies now. Many out of Korea and China or Tiawan. But some good Japanese series as well. Really enjoyed Fish Bowl Wives but I am strange that way.
I'm happy to have more competition in the anime space with Netflix, Crunchyroll, and HiDive all pushing each other.
The perks of anime coming to Netflix specifically is that a dub is almost always guaranteed, but the downside is that it can take years or maybe even never for an anime to get a Bluray release. I'm glad Sentai recently gave us a physical release for Carole & Tuesday, but I'm not holding my breath for Cyberpunk Edgerunners because Little Witch Academia, another Trigger anime, has yet to see a Western Bluray release despite releasing in 2017.

One decision that Netflix made that I was confused about was their One Piece streaming. They made a huge jump from after ace's death straight to Egghead, skipping Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, and Wano.

Anime isn't exactly a genre. Anime is a type of animation that comprises many genres.
I would say Animation is the overarching medium, with Anime being its own genre. But I can see what youre saying and I think its all just how personal definition define anything animated.

I think one of the huge issues crunchyroll has is the sheer number of new series they completely drop. Most anime on crunchyroll never get a second season and if they do it can be years apart which make it incredibly difficult to maintin interest.

I WANT Netflix to actually compete with Crunchyroll for 1 main reason of: it will widen the market of voice acting, and since Netflix has more money as a whole and is based in the US, we could see more talented people come out that would’ve otherwise never happened because voice acting is not a profitable space right now. The reason why seemingly every Japanese VA in anime seems so good and talented is because it’s a LEGITIMATE market and means of income, and making a name for yourself in Japan.

CR getting rid of comments deff hurt them a lot, I would always go to CR instead of Netflix because of the comments but now if its on netflix I am going there as the player is 10x better and the web UI is all around better so no reason to suffer navigating CR if I can watch it on netflix. I loved being able to check the comments before jumping into a new show or going to the comments after an amazing episode.
Hulu use to be huge for anime but I never enjoyed the fact that dub and sub show as 2 separate episodes so it always switches back and forth when going to the next episode

Currently I'm watching Delicious in Dungeon. I like it so much even though I'm not usually into these dungeon middle age anime shows. Also gotta say that I didn't think it would be possible and was heavily sceptical but Netflix showed even me that live action can be good. I still prefer the anime except for Last Airbender. The Live Action adaptation has this mature vibe that I really like without being too mature. Also Big Pretender was amazing and Aggretsuko was like the cutest thing ever.
Also half the digital codes I ever got were expired when I bought the sealed Blu ray case from Walmart so those digital codes were always a limited time offer XD

How is anime a genre? It´s also more than a myth that Netflix anime or most of their shows have a high budget. There are exceptions but Netflix never = high budget. Weekly releases also existed on Netflix for quite some time and not just with anime. A few telenovelas did it too.
I do agree with crunchyroll saying we should support the artist, but I think I can still do that while pirating. I should support the artists. Is there any way to pirate but send money straight to the artists? If so, thanks. (I don't know how to do either.). I have never done either of these things ever.
Nevermind, I just looked it up and learn't the websites could have malware. When I heard they have moderators I thought they would be like 100% safe and 100% operated under moral means. Main problem that I see with Crunchyroll that they doing only really limited number of translated laguages and app is not on a lot of devices. On LG and Samsung TVs is literally every streaming platform ... except of Crunchyroll. And also they cancelled Windows app and now is only web app ... great.
Also that translations, like is atleast for me comfortable when I can see something in my native language and not all the time reading english subtitiles (English is not my native).
Now is Crunchyroll under Sony which have money to invest into more platforms and better localisation but looks like they never do.

Impossible. Netflix with its few shows and popular animes added few months or even years after airing, cant compete with crunchyroll and it's simulcasts. this literally makes zero sense
The thing is when Netflix takes over they might do a thing if they monopolize the anime industry, like a different subscription for anime. This means that they will get more greedy increasing prices and changing the subscriptions, ofcourse this is meant by the long run if they fully monopolize the anime industry.
