I‘m so glad I grew up outside of the USA and went to a school, that actually taught political science basics (including these things).
But I have to admit that I am not surprised many US Americans don’t know the meaning of these words, when they sprout things like „the USA is a constitutional republic, not a democracy“.

    • @babybirdhome
      @babybirdhome หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jennyh4025They always like to say Constitutional Republic to be a pedant, but that’s not even pedantic - it’s just masquerading as pedantic. I think they do it because “democratic” contains the root word “Democrat”, while the word “republic” is the root word of “Republican”, and think that these have anything to do with the two primary political parties in the country.
The U.S. is a democratically elected, constitutional representative republic. They like to pretend that democracy isn’t still quite central to how our whole system actually operates. The public democratically elects its representatives, who then democratically create policy.

    • @babybirdhome

I have to correct you on the “especially those on the right”. That’s only true at this current moment in history. It’s not always true. Don’t allow the current moment to cloud your judgement of the future - those on the left can also be tricked the way those on the right have been today - it’s just harder because the left is more diverse and less single-minded than those on the right, so it’s easier to do to those on the right in many (but not all) cases.

And a big part of _that_ is because there really haven't been communist states. Not in the way Marx & Engels imagined. Yes, Cuba gave people cheap or free medicine, and in some countries, they probably had food and housing subsidies. But things were _never_ equally shared. You had a dictator like Castro or Stalin, or an oligarchy like the Chinese Communist Party, all living high on the hog while most citizens lived in poverty and terror, but never any real communism. And I'm not saying real communism is desirable, I'm just saying it's never existed in modern history. It has always been a slightly altered form of fascism, under the moniker of communism, and it is absolutely _not_ what liberals want.

According to delusional Donny Australia is a socialist country because we have a decent public health system, a social security system that includes training for unemployed people and we have restrictions for certain companies that stop profiteering from vulnerable people.
Australians have a better quality of life and a longer life expectancy than Americans, we also have a multiparty political system that allows coalition governments with a preference voting system.
Personally, I would never move to the USA because I have a far better life in Australia on a disability pension than what I could ever achieve in the USA.

Anything is possible when people unite so I hope that the American people will unite against the Republican party under Donald Trump because they must be stopped.
Donald Trump will not only destroy the USA but he will destroy the world as a whole because of his stupidity and belief that China, Russia, North Korea are his friends.

Venezuelan exile here. I saw my country sink to the bottom by a totalitarian regime based on communism, where the government expropriated the entirety of the private sector, and ran it to the ground. It left my nation in ruins, and made my life a living hell. I had to escape my nation, leaving behind everything I had, and everyone I knew, just to attain that basic human right that is the pursuit of happiness. I say all of this to make it clear, you'll have a hard time finding someone who utterly despises and loathes communism more than I do.
And yet, if I could vote (I don't have a green card yet, I migrated legally, but being eligible to vote is a long and arduous process that takes a long time to complete), I'd vote Democrat. Why? "In theory", the republican party should fit me like a glove. They claim to hate communists. Except they don't. They just like to name anyone they don't like as Communists. But the sad reality is, they absolutely would do a Maoist purge in the country if they could get away with it.
If you want to avoid Communism, and totalitarianism to take over the country? Don't vote Republican. They lost sight of what democracy means a long time ago. They demonstrated it during January 6th, and continue to demonstrate it to this day. America doesn't have a "Left Wing Party" and a "Right Wing Party". It has a "Right Wing Party" (Democrats) and a "Far-Right Wing Party" (Republicans). There's a difference.

I am afraid they are going to win because half of tghe country is maga, racists, and want the country turn to be white like it was before President Lincoln, a country lwhere white european people are the masters and the rest will be treated as inferior persons. We should be clear: Communism does not eliminate personal belongings. When it talks about eliminating private property it is on about the hoarding of resource. It is not averse to fast cars, movies, video games etc - or even the operation of competitive businesses - only that they should operate of, for and by the people rather than an oligarch.

I live in Central Europe so have experienced Communism first hand. The thing is, that Communism is a utopia. It sounds nice in theory, but is a nightmre in practice. In fact, Fascism and Communism are basically very similar, they are just using different symbols. That is why far left and far right are so comfy with each other in Euroep these days.

If someone did (which is totally a fair question--the dude should be exposed for his lack of knowledge), they'd be accused of "attacking" him, or some other such nonsense. Refusing to ask tough questions that shouldn't be tough is a false kind of "civility" that should be done away with.

I have often dropped the literal dictionary meaning of communism in response to that accusation and asked the person to point out exactly which policy gives the workers collective ownership of the business they work at. They simply laugh it off like I'm the person that doesn't know what the word means, and not a single person has given me a factual example.

As a modern German I have personally visited the DDR/GDR/East Getmany when it was in its death throes im 1987. I have seen the self-proclaimed "real existierender Sozialismus" / "truly existing socialism" of the GDR. Even they didn't have a 100% state ownership of all means of production. As could be demonstrated quite clearly the difference between political leaders ownership and the average citizen were maybe not as drastic as the wealth gap currently in the USA but it was still very noticable. As such the claims of "to everyone according to their needs, by everyone according to their abilities" don't hold true. But here comes the kicker: even among the "socialist brother states" of the Soviet era satellite states the GDR was probably one of the most well-off.
So when Americans throw around claims that current European states have anything in common with socialism they don't understand one thing about it.
That's like saying that being sexy is identical to being sexist. Sounds similar but is quite obviously very different.
The difference between Marxism and Communism is more or less an arbitrary distinction for scholars as it describes only the means how to achieve a supposedly utopian society. What Marx/Engels failed to grasp is that humans being still biologically driven creatures will always retain at least a tiny amount of self-preservation, greed, and egotism. In some more, in others less. However until all of humanity achieved a negligible difference in these factors communism can NOT work as some people will tend to accumulate more and more (wealth=resources=power=influence) to secure their own well-being over others.
Fascism and its brother National-Socialism are both forms of dictatorship of the extreme right. Yes, even National-SOCIALISM. A cow pie still isn't a pie you'd like to eat, right? Ditto for a urinal cake. It's just a name for basically the same thing. The NS doctrine is a subset of fascism with specific nuances for Germany back in the day.
Trump is proposing a system of dictatorship virtually identical to the NS regime. Currently without official plans of decimating 'lesser humans' (however they want to define lesser) in death camps, but everything else is pretty much on par with Nazi ideology. Control of media, art, immigration, registration, companies supporting MAGA being exempt from any controls, all others strictly controlled and supervised, if allowed at all.
As a German I am scared sh!tless about tRump winning a second presidency.
So, please, dear Americans, vote blue 💙 like your lives depend on it. Because they may very well do.
Peace, from a German in Hamburg

Topics for another video Rachel. They are integral characteristics of what Trump is using to his advantage with his followers. His celebrity status is giving him a pass on a lot of everything he says. His rabid followers can no longer see the evils of xenophobia, racism, religious bigotry, or misogyny. They are emotionally bought in. They overlook his countless flaws & lies. He is their savior that is leading them to their destruction.

They know. They do this deliberately because they know their voters are uneducated and are swayed by fear-mongering.
Educating the politicians won't change anything because the politicians' problem isn't that they're ignorant. Their problem is they're authoritarian wanna be dictators who want to rule the US rather than govern it.
What we have to hope for is trying to change the minds of voters.
