Don't stop playing. I never thought I would play again after my spinal surgery. Today I began a long journey back from where I once was. You are very good & give me hope. Thank you so much.
I watched this video last night thinking that it would take me ages to learn this pattern, but the way you explained it really helped and I learnt it almost instantly. From another Bonham fan to another thankyou very much, your videos are great, keep it up. Jazz
Man Dan the chills just creep when you get going...that bass foot of yours should go into the Rock n Roll hall of fame..You are just smooth smooth...Thanks Buddy!!!!!!
Thanks.. In my later years (I'm 55) I've ditched the big kit (Peart , Portnoy..etc) 2 Bass Drum approach and come "home" to 1 up, 2 down, Ian Paice and John Bonham approach. All you ever need ...... You videos are extremely helpful. Where as I got by and faked when I had too, your videos really break things down to the workable compenents. Thanks Man !!!
Chris I'm in a place where I'm feeling the same but still have the 2nd kick drum. I just love using it. I tune like Bonham utilizing full bass drum tone. I use it for emphasis more so. Not speed metal or anything like that.
@GrooveDrummin I was thinking about getting that color for my new Ludwig set. But I'm kinda stuck in between champagne and gold sparkle. But, I might get champagne because you don't see that finish too often.
@beppepd83 Awesome, thanks for watching! So long as you play the riff correctly that's all that counts. I kept it to a count of 4 to keep it simple and clear that it all happens within 4 counts.
@Flexapr Really cool that you studied with Peter! Thanks for considering me on some drumming instruction. I am beginning to give personal lessons using SKYPE. Send me an email if you would like to discuss further. Thanks again!
Dan, great chops & lessons here! Do you give in-person lessons? Where are you based? I'm Alex, in San Francisco, & have studied in '08 & '09 with Polyrhythm guru Peter Magadini in for 2 years. It'd be great to learn authentic Bonzo chops from you! Thanks.
Just try the pattern on the kit and you brain will immediately feel it :) But seriously, the polyrhythm is between the hihat and the snare, so listen carefully (and try not hearing the bass drum). Also, polyrhythms kind of loose their feel when sped up.
I found you accidentally as I really like "Phase" for excellent explanation of Bonham beats. I think he's English. Check him out if you don't know him.
Hey there groove, did you spend a lot of time learning rudiments? Your technique is great, just curious if you did that and/or if reading was important to your development.
Dear sir, I might be wrong, but i cannot find the feel of polyrhythmic, seems to me all straight 8th notes between hi-hat, snare and bass....not the same feeling like when playing 3 over 2 for example.
yes it is - what i do prefer is not necessarily the drive rather the floor-plate offered on newer pedals. The old SK vibrates a bit with the 26" bass drum whereas with a floor plate, for ex the Pearl Eliminator, there is no vibrating and results in a harder hit on impact.
After watching 4 lessons I lost interest in playing drums,I would have to marry that bass pedal to be half as good as what I've just seen,not enough time in life to practice 2 to 3 hrs a day ,to just play drums decently

Benthruit ! Best wishes on your recovery 👏🏼
A true talent... Few drummers can actually teach. Dan makes it look almost easy!
many,many thanks.
This guy is unbelievable. The spirit of Bonham is strong with you.

Thanks aga
Best drum channel period!!!
Fantastic vid.Who needs double bass drums when you can play like that.
great lessons!
Love it! thanks for a really good, clear, quick lesson.
great playing.
you can play fireball without any double pedal, you're a classic, love that approach
Thank you!

@walkerbrierley
thanks! Great to hear you're getting back into it. This one here is an older speed king.
Thanks Dan!

Your a bad ass drummer man thank you!
incredible!!
that looks like my first set of Ludwig's. 1967. yes, I'm that old. Speed Kings. love the direct drive. same champagne sparkle
fantastic dan.....i always check my email for your new posts......how about breaking down how to set up your base pedal......thanx again dan.
cool! makes me want to play NOW!
Nice exercise Dan!!!
smooooth. thanks for the breakdown
Melhor cover John Bonhram! THE BEST! Brazil!
@Jiraiyashir Correct, they are 16th notes in groupings of three, not triplets.
nice exercise thanks
CotDamn that was amazing!
I use both Promark 5A and 5AX. Sometimes the 5B for a little extra volume.
Great Drum Sound ... In the age of samples (i hate) your kit is fuckin great...
Agree ,brilliant sound, especially the bass drum.
Love it
pearl power shifter eliminator pedal probably, i've got him that as well, more than 14 years (3 pearl pedal, fits to my foot in the best way though)
Love you Paiste ! :)
Great man☺

wow love that beat at 1.57
nice, sounds like deep purple's fireball intro
I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the snare drum is playing dotted quarter notes, and the kick is just the two eighth notes in between.
@beppepd83
Awesome, thanks for watching! So long as you play the riff correctly that's all that counts. I kept it to a count of 4 to keep it simple and clear that it all happens within 4 counts.
Thank you!
Good lord where do you live, I'm moving in next to you to hear those sweet rythms.
@Tracebebo
i think Ludwig told me champagne sparkle is more expensive than the other sparkles because they use real flakes of silver and copper.
@THUNDERIN78
Yeah, I've been asked this a lot...so it will have to happen. Thanks for watching bro !
I think Bonham does this at some point in Bonzo's Montreux.
@Flexapr
Really cool that you studied with Peter! Thanks for considering me on some drumming instruction. I am beginning to give personal lessons using SKYPE. Send me an email if you would like to discuss further. Thanks again!
@Nato61
Yep, from Canada...eh. Thanks for watching.
@thunderdrumass
Thanks very much for watching bro
I like your video. Hey ,,, your from Canadia? lol Nice drums too BTW.
I wouldnt say they were triplets on the left hand and foot, its groups of 3 16th notes that create a polyrhythm
Is that the champagne sparkle color? :O
brilliant ;)
Sounds like a day at the recking yard 🤪
rockin!
Great tutor! -- I'm getting back behind the kit after 5 years off..!! btw..what is your pedal..Tama?

@TheSdDRumer
yes
Incredible job! is that a Speed King your using? I never could get one of those pedals to move for me but most great players got them things to fly.
@Tracebebo
yes
that's really very cool !! I love it!
just a question about timing: why right and must count until 4? isn't that
1 & 2 & 3 &

@drumbumb1966
14" ...THANKS
I found you accidentally as I really like "Phase" for excellent explanation of Bonham beats. I think he's English. Check him out if you don't know him.
I know Phrase...great guy and player!
Hey there groove, did you spend a lot of time learning rudiments? Your technique is great, just curious if you did that and/or if reading was important to your development.
Yes, and to practice dynamics. Thank you so much! Reading was not paramount imo, i feel reading is good when you don't remember the parts...
possible to play with heel technique on the pedal?
Dear sir, I might be wrong, but i cannot find the feel of polyrhythmic, seems to me all straight 8th notes between hi-hat, snare and bass....not the same feeling like when playing 3 over 2 for example.
1:55 punk rock!!!
Is that a Ludwig Speed King pedal? You prefer that type (direct drive) over chain-drive? Just curious. Cheers from Toronto!
yes it is - what i do prefer is not necessarily the drive rather the floor-plate offered on newer pedals. The old SK vibrates a bit with the 26" bass drum whereas with a floor plate, for ex the Pearl Eliminator, there is no vibrating and results in a harder hit on impact.
Hey GrooveDrummin what kind of sticks do you use ?, i just use regular 5A Promark sticks
What shoes does he have??
After watching 4 lessons I lost interest in playing drums,I would have to marry that bass pedal to be half as good as what I've just seen,not enough time in life to practice 2 to 3 hrs a day ,to just play drums decently
sweet! you should toss out your double kick pedal. No need for that nonsense
