  • I feel that this lick is a very important part of any drummers' skillset. I'm sure you'll recognize it but try to guess who made this lick up in the early 70's. Please enjoy and I hope you pick something up from this one.
    This one's in high def using progressive scan.
    3 cameras and 8 digital audio tracks.

    This is one of the best drum lessons about Bonham and drumming in general on youtube, hands down.

      jeremyw5...I am getting old and I apologize for pulling people on their serious misuse of words.
      This upload cannot be “Hands down” AND “ONE of the best” can it. It can either be “Hands down THE best” or “ONE of the best”.
      How much would you like to meet me for a beer!!

    Very talented drummer. I like the Ghost notes. When you had time to fit them in. I had a day when I was close but not as good as this. You have a real gift. Nice to hear that kind of sound without elbows flying all over. No wood chips under this kit.

    I'm not too sure, it is just the way I have always played. The mindset is to play for the song, keep it solid and steady and not to overplay. How you hit them also contributes to the "sound". Think of "pulling" the sound out of the drum not playing into it.

      Ian has one of the fastest left hands I've seen in rock drumming. His one-handed roll sounds better than many two-handed snare rolls, he's still amazing. If you haven't already, check out the clinic with Chad Smith and Ian Paice on youtube.

    Very motivational to hear good things for sure!
    Did gigs in the past and toured, not huge names or anything but played plenty of shows. I took a break from it all because of how disappointing new bands were and what music was evolving into, IMO. The politics involved in the business didn't help either and was only about making money.
    Now, I am focusing on trying to teach aspiring drummers things I found to be effective techniques and methods.

    • @Marty_Wildman
      @Marty_Wildman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Playing the drums is definitely a reward in itself. It would take a lot of money, I mean a lot, for me to trade my drumming fun I enjoy for some of the uh 'talent..' we see today. In fact, I just don't think I would do it. I am going to be binge watching these videos over the next month. These are absolutely great.

    STRUGGLING WITH THE HANDS? It's just this: "R"RLR accent the first right which is the 1 on the tom, the next right is the 2 on the tom, the left is the "an" before the 3 on the SNARE, and the final right is the 3 on the tom.. now to add the other stroke on the SNARE just play BOTH hands at the same time on the 1: "RL"RLR unless you just picked up sticks for the first time this hand part should come together in minutes and obviously speed will take a little while but this is the pattern he mentioned but didn't really explain enough.. it's very important you accent the one just to get the proper feel especially when you're playing by pattern drumming is all feel.. I like his videos but they're a little too concise a little more explanation would be helpful.. Next just practice the feet separately alternating kick to hi hat like he showed.. that's just a matter of time and it all comes together.. Great video overall! Thanks for posting!

    Try keeping the hi-hats steady on time but less on the bass drum, for example every 4 hi-hat beats do a bass drum on the 3 &...experiment. Keep a metronome going to lock in the hi-hat and make it easier to follow.

    @GrooveDrummin I knew it sounded familiar! It is indeed the 3 over 2. I learned it as the syllables "Not dif-fi-cult" where both hands start together on Not, and then alternate and sync back up on the not. (4 against 3 was "Not Very Di-ffi-cult") That is an AWESOME sounding beat. I must learn! Thanks for sharing.

    Well, Happy Fathers Day! I've got 5 of my own, so I know it's hard to find extra time. I have always wanted to be a musician and as my kids have gotten older they are a big part of my inspiration, as I try to inspire them. We have a tiny studio now and they all play instruments and we can all play together. Even the wifey is buying a bass soon to join us! When I die I hope they play Fogelberg's Leader of the Band in my honor. : )

  • @fordummieslikeme7575
    @fordummieslikeme7575 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This would be simple 3/4 Time (1 an 2 an 3 an) HOWEVER, when the snare hits on the "1" and on the "an" before the 3 ("1" an 2 "an" 3 an) those TWO strokes take on a life of their own which is why people are saying 2 on 3 poly rhythm.. and why this is so groovy.. Also works as a great fill with or without the hi hat.. if you are struggling try just playing the tom and the foot then slowly adding the snare hand on the 1 then the tricky part adding snare on the "an" aka upbeat before the 3.. it's actually pretty easy until you go for that upbeat on the snare that's where the magic is it's not easy but the payoff is great feels so good once you get it!

    Yes, for a VERY short time when Carmine Appice got Bonham's Ludwig endorsement, his first kit had two 26"ers. Actually, I think it was only for a couple of rehearsals until Page said "there's too much bass drum" and you don't need a second!

    These videos are a dream come true. I just bought a drum set and I have already learned this. I am so glad you made this video. I'll be honest, alone... this is not my favorite sounding lick, but you're lessons are VERY well put together and extremely helpful for a beginner to know exactly how to start to play. I love how you slowed down the tempo and explained how each hand/foot was supposed to act.
    Are you still doing lessons?

      I would like to see you break down how to do a bonham style roll, or drum fill.
      not sure exactly what it is called. It may be really simple for you, but the way you slow things down and give a step by step is exactly what I need as a beginning drummer.
      Thanks a lot mate!

    Back then in England they had people like Phil Seamen (jazz drummer and pioneer of double kick) and a big stream of jazz and blues music and musicians (i.e. Alexis Korner) plus many many "live" music available. "Google" them and you'll be amazed. To have an overview on the very best of the brit drummer scene in the mid '60, look also for "Gonks Go Beat" even here on the tube. Cheers

    @GrooveDrummin When you have this big bass drum, I assume you tune it tight. So you cannot "Bury" the beater into the head without choking the sound correct?
    Here is my problem; I have ALWAYS played burying the beater into the head since I started. Because I tune very low, It doesn’t seem to interfere with sound. However, I just took the pillows out of my bass drum and I realized I have to stop doing this.
    Any tips to help me "Release" the beater after the stroke?

  • @q3playing
    @q3playing 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great lick, Dan! Any suggestions to put it in use in 4/4 context?
    Btw, I found the timing of my upstroke kicks wasn't very consistent. After fooling around, I derived an exercise myself:
    FOOT: L R L R
    HAND: R L R L
    LH=snare, RH=ride, LF=HH, RF=kick
    i.e. Feet are playing in unison with their opposite hands.
    Wow, this is very difficult to get up to speed, harder than your lick... The opposite hands and feet don't want to go together. The bass always tries to slip back to the downbeat.

    Yes, you're correct. I know I said 3 over 4 (sounds different) because I wanted to make it more simple to understand to the non music reading player. 3 beats inside a count of 4 is easier to grasp than 3 inside 2...I may be off base here but it's only for simplification and so long as they play it right, that's what counts to me. But you are right, thanks for pointing that out.

    It would be cool if you broke down the licks at the end, starting around 4:25. Maybe for the next video? I learned this basic lick way back when I took lessons in the early 90's. I had forgotten about it. I need to dust it off! Thanks!

    This technique is a common way to get a double bass sound without having a double pedal or another bass drum. Just tune the floor lower if you want it sound more like two bass drums.

    Not too tight because it will be too bouncy then without a port in the reso. It took me a while to adjust also...think of your pedal like it is a drum stick...if you rest your stick on the head it will bounce and create multiple strokes, same with the pedal. Tighten the spring on your pedal and let it do the work.

  • @GrooveDrumming

    Yes, that is correct and the trick is to start with the left foot and keep time with it. The right foot is on the off beat, that's what gives it the feel.

    I think it's from listening to old jazz and blues records with a trial and error approach. I've heard Rich do this polyrhythm.

    Very good. I had to fight to play my right hand with the hi hat. No used to that😅

    keep in mind there are no linear notes (NOT on the same beat), everything is played on same notes... first snare lands on the same beat as floor tom and the second needs to land on the same note as the kick.
    Thank you and you're welcome!
