Pokemon Competitive Singles in Gen 3 is a world that you wouldn't imagine a Pokemon like Jumpluff succeeding in. However, in one of the highest stakes games of all time, Grand Finals Game 4 of Callous Invitational 4, a Jumpluff was used by none of than thelinearcurve. And it won!
Why did he do this in such an important moment with money on the line? Let's explore that.

Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Something I forgot to mention is that this was set 2 of Grand Finals. thelinearcurve already beat Undisputed 3-0 in a best of 5 before this, coming from the Losers bracket. So Jumpluff was brought in Set 2, Game 4 at the absolute most important moment!

More importantly, it threatened encore at any time if he used a boosting move or grass attack jumpluff could switch in on and that single leech seed won the game with chip damage, any other pokemon there would have to gamble missing toxic to get the same outcome and moltres is very fast and hits hard so jumpluff being able to outspeed and ensure the leech seed connects on the last pokemon that cant switch out is huge

Bounce and Acrobatics made it a staple during my time playing Gen 6
The idea that you could set leech seed, bounce to avoid damage, and on the turn that you take damage, eat a berry and then double your damage out put, there are few downsides to this form of chip damage
Genuinely, this was one of the most informative and helpful breakdowns of the decision making process of a competitive battle. It seems like competitive Pokemon (or any competitive game) really requires a specific mindset and way of thinking that you have to work at and learn (and has always been super intimidating to me), and this video did a great job of making that more approachable and understandable.
I find it really interesting how in these kind of tournaments or very high ladder play these kind of off meta pokemon can find a niche to excel at as situational picks when you have a decent idea of what you will face against.

A couple gens ago I ran an itemless Swords Dance Jumpluff in NU and/or PU to decent results. The surprise factor of a late game cleaner disguised as a support mon can honestly be game-altering.

Hey Jimothy, after hearing you talk about substitute + leech seed, it reminded me of a failed attempted archetype that mostly saw play in DPP and BW ubers called "quick stall" which featured annoying pokemon like whimsicott in combination with traditional stall pokemon. It's not current by any means, but is there anything that can be said about this subarchetype?

If I had a nickel for every time Jumpluff won money in a Smogon format I'd have two nickels, which isn't much but it's weird it happened twice
(I won $40 and a drawing in an oras duu tour back in like 2016 and this is infinitely more swag so this brings a smile to my face :DDD go pluffy)
