@@VideoGameEsoterica for someone who just wants to experience all the games and isn’t as hardcore like us needing all the OG hardware it’s the perfect solution
Not only can original hardware be expensive when you factor in getting quality connection cables, original controllers, power supplies, accessories, modifications and paying a tech to maintain or restore your consoles to working condition, they were also not necessarily made to last over such long time periods. After all, these devices are consumer electronics specifically made to the lowest possible and most affordable price points up to about 40 years ago, where as the DE-10 nano, as far as I understand, is made with industrial applications in mind, being made to be both very robust and able to withstand high temperatures without active cooling requirements. Even back when these consoles where new I still remember friends having issues with their PS1 disc lasers failing, or a PS2 eating a disc and not wanting to open the disc drive anymore, or other hardware failures requiring repairs or even entire console replacements. It also becomes even more costly if you want to play both PAL and NTSC region games and wanting them to run at their correct clock frequency, which would only be possible by owning and playing the PAL and NTSC games on their same region consoles, with space then also becoming a concern if you want to own a wider range of various consoles. As time goes on I hope that more people will come to understand the tremendous value of FPGA emulation, as we will eventually reach a point where original consoles might not be readily available in working condition anymore, where devices such as the Mister and the Analogue products do an amazing job at faithfully preserving a range of various different console and arcade systems while adding additional features and much extended flexibility.

Maybe I don't understand the MISTer but why choose this expensive option over just emulating on a regular computer/laptop that you probably already have?
I'm going to be buying one tomorrow :) I'm making a fully loaded model with a metal case, passive cooling with analogue and digital out :) I also did what you said and got the 128mb of ram Great video :)
I have the GunCom 3 but currently my new 55” QLED is too thin for the sensors so I have to figure something out. Also need to remount the sensor bars for the Wii and Wii U. Also, the the mount I had for my Xbox 360 camera and PS3 camera won’t fit on this TV. Only thing that wants to sit up there is the PlayStation 4 camera.
I've tried several emulation setups (Pi, Odroid, Pandora's Boxes and MAME PC's) and nothing compares to Mister for retro gaming. Best bit of tech I've ever bought!
Nah, a PC with a proper emulation setup is way superior to any Pandora, Pi and android setup. These are all the bottom of the barrel of software emulation.
This is a very good video for newcomers to Mister ecosystem, however one thing I think you forgot to mention why one would choose a more expensive Mister instead of say a Raspberry Pi. Anyway, looking forward for new content as always.
I'm sure this will sound incredibly noobish, but in order to play the retro games on a MiSTer, do you just have to find the "roms" or can you collect the actual physical copies of games? I've recently gotten a RetroUSB AVS and started collecting NES carts. I'd love to get into Genesis/32x/Sega CD, and SNES, but part of what I'm loving is finding the real carts. Thanks for looking!
@@VideoGameEsoterica thanks for the super quick response! I did want an Everdrive as well, but by the time I’d get a Genesis, SNES and Everdrives, I’d be over the price of a MiSTer. I think one of these is in my near future 👍🏻

OK maybe I didn't understand the video, you do talk fast, but I'm left wondering, what about this justifies spending soo much money instead of just emulating? It seems you'd have to spend quite a bit just for retro systems. Those of which can be emulated with ease on pc or even your phone
Can you use a lightgun with a vga monitor via mister? Also what are the savestates like? I'm told they're quite limited in number but that was a year or so ago and I'll need loads for playing shmups
You can use a vga monitor if you like double to 31kHz but some light guns may still get a little angry about it in my experience. Save states are generally NOT in cores. A few have them
While it is absolutely correct that the Mister is cheap compared to RGB modded original hardware, it should also be said that software emulation (e.g. via a raspberryPi) is the cheapest and still a very good way of playing old games. Yes, if you are an enthusiast and want to have the best experience, surely the Mister is the way to go, but for the sake of giving a complete and transparent picture, this point should not go unnoticed. Maybe not relevant for the enthusiast subscribers of this channel, but in case for somebody new doing his research and watching the vid ;-)
"a hundred and change arcade cores"? I don't know how many rbf files there are (a "core"), but so far as how many arcade games are available, after a first/fresh update_all... there are well over 1,000. I haven't counted recently but I think it might be approaching 1,400.

Around 3 years ago I bought the analog version and only ever use HDMI. If I know then what I know now I just would have went digital with dual ram. Now I am planning on converting to dual ram. If you are only ever going to use HDMI I would say go dual ram as it's going to be more and more necessary for some of the upcoming cores.
I think I’ll go digital dual ram this time. I do use my analog out when I want to play on a CRT but if I want to do that I can just use my analog mister, plus it sounds like the dual ram may be utilized more in the future although right now it’s not fully needed yet, thanks for the tips
I bought a de-10 Nano for about $125 off Amazon during the pandemic which wasn't that long ago so it makes me sick how much the prices of these have gone up. Would I buy one today at the current prices if I didn't have one? The answer is yes of course. However what I can't do anymore is buy one as gifts.. If it was still about $240 total for everything then it would be something possible. For $500+ now though, it's just too much.
Here's a question.. anyone know how much lag am I'm getting if I hook my MiSter up HDMI to my PC capture card (PCI) and play off of OBS?? I dont have a CRT tv or anything. Im curious if/how much lag I'm getting tho playing like this.
Rather than spend the $$$ on another MISTer, get a TATE set-up. TCL TV's can be rotated any direction without damage. My 50'' TV cost $350 new and delivered. The stand cost $40, the fitting cost $80.
That face when the "junk" you bought for university course work turns out to be more useful to all the emulation devices you bought since graduating ... 2024 retro gaming here I come.
@@VideoGameEsoterica There are ways. But yeah not as simple as the mister. Beside that you need to configure stuff to have an experience like on the mister with software emulators.

Nice video. But one thing you haven't told ist that all of this is piracy except you own all the boards, games etc... So yeah it's cheaper but the only real legal way to play all this stuff that isn't ported to another current platform, is to buy those expensive cartridges or arcade boards, etc...
@@VideoGameEsoterica Don't get me wrong. It's not about yourself. I just wanted to mention it. Pirating old stuff that isn't available at an affordable price for ordinary mortals is a necessary evil for me.
MiSTer is my stop. N64 is my nostalgia limit and desires and anything newer than that is meh to me. Once Robert Peip developed the N64 core, buying a MiSTer was a done deal.
Not to rain on your fpga purist retro parade, but failing to mention that you can download retro arch on your android smartphone for free is a marketing gimmick if you can even tell the difference between that and real hardware.
One for my studio, one for my PVM and one for dual ram testing / my television in my living room. But I use them for the channel a ton so I need redundancy
There are no 64 megabyte Neo Geo games. They are megabits which 1/8 of a megabyte. All old consoles measures carts in megabits. E.g. SF2 on the SNES was 16 megabits. I.e. 2 megabytes.
I wonder if this guy is somehow sponsored by MiSTer? Not one price comparison to PC emulation. I have been emulated ROMS since the late 90s on my Athlon 600-1.4 system and emulation on modern powerful (non ARM) cores is even more impresive. Someone who is tech savvy should NEVER have to spend a dollar on emulation unless if they want a plug and play sytem ready to go with minimal effort. Word of advice- the WWW and torrent software are your friend and ARM rocks for Chromebooks...
Very expensive elitist emulator, lacking lots of quality of life things of software emulators... But I'm kind of an elitist in this kind of things, for now I will stick to real hardware and software emulation, but I will keep watching the development of hardware emulation

With a fully loaded 1TB SD Card along with my MT32-Pi and tty2oled, I'm in retro heaven and use my MiSTer system more than all my previous and current gen consoles all put together! 😎
I love my MiSTer system that much that I own three of them! 😅
I do love me some MIDI on the X68000

I love you Mister everyone should give it a chance. I’m building my fourth one this year. however, since I bought my Mr. with games preloaded on an sd chip, I want to learn how to program the Mr. and load games from my library and from developers as well. Do you have any videos of how to download games from developers? If you don’t, I hope you can make one soon in the future. No rush. Thanks VGE
I have some manual install info in Saturn and N64 videos but I can’t remember which ones now
@@VideoGameEsoterica , when you get a chance can you send me a link, I greatly would appreciate that VGE. You and pixel cherry ninja are my favorite channels of 2023 and so far 2024.🤙
My phone is being stupid. The link is in the N64 video (latest) under a setup guide link that teaches manual installs
@@VideoGameEsoterica sorry to bother you one more time, but do you know the title of the video? And I know how you feel about your phone. My phone has been acting up too.

Maybe I don't understand the MISTer but why choose this expensive option over just emulating on a regular computer/laptop that you probably already have?
I have a video on what the fundamental differences are :) check the playlist
Accuracy is the main reason
the cool thing is, you can also do fun stuff with the de10 nano fpga dev board if you are a tech enthusiast
Yea it’s def not just limited to being a MiSTer
Would love to see a video on the RetroTink 4k in use with the MiSTer, your videos are brilliant! Hope you have a great 2024
Soon. I’ll probably make it Saturday and schedule it for next week. Barring any issues
Wonderful, looking forward to it@@VideoGameEsoterica
I'm going to be buying one tomorrow :) I'm making a fully loaded model with a metal case, passive cooling with analogue and digital out :) I also did what you said and got the 128mb of ram Great video :)
Nice! Enjoy it when it’s done :)
If they worked with retroachievements, Id get one. Thats a fun community over there, seeing whos playing obscure old stuff alongside you.
I’ve heard people really get into that. I haven’t tried it myself
I use command Velcro hooks myself
I've tried several emulation setups (Pi, Odroid, Pandora's Boxes and MAME PC's) and nothing compares to Mister for retro gaming. Best bit of tech I've ever bought!
I agree :) obv
Nah, a PC with a proper emulation setup is way superior to any Pandora, Pi and android setup. These are all the bottom of the barrel of software emulation.
This is a very good video for newcomers to Mister ecosystem, however one thing I think you forgot to mention why one would choose a more expensive Mister instead of say a Raspberry Pi. Anyway, looking forward for new content as always.
Not really the videos intent. I have others from this year that explained it :)
I have one.. but put it away for 6 months and the USB hub died.. really frustrating.
Odd. The whole thing?
Is there a full set up available for purchase that includes games? Or at least a preconfigured card that you can just drop games onto?
Not that I am aware of. No reputable builder of MiSTer would send a populated card out as that could lead to issues
I didn’t realize how much the price has gone up for the DE10. I think I got mine for around $150 back in 2019/2020
Inflation is a killer
I'm sure this will sound incredibly noobish, but in order to play the retro games on a MiSTer, do you just have to find the "roms" or can you collect the actual physical copies of games? I've recently gotten a RetroUSB AVS and started collecting NES carts. I'd love to get into Genesis/32x/Sega CD, and SNES, but part of what I'm loving is finding the real carts. Thanks for looking!
You don’t use physical games, just files
@@VideoGameEsoterica thanks for the super quick response! I did want an Everdrive as well, but by the time I’d get a Genesis, SNES and Everdrives, I’d be over the price of a MiSTer. I think one of these is in my near future 👍🏻
Def get into MiSTer. So worth it
That SNK jam is undeniable
Classic
I have my OG Mister I got years ago for $110. Now I want a second and the Mister Pi and Qmtech are always sold out. Also really want a portable. Lets get it done.
Soon. At least on Pi
Mine is out for delivery today, exciting stuff...
Oh wow perfect timing
@@VideoGameEsoterica getting and setting up a MiSTer seemed like the sort of new year's resolution that I could actually keep.
The best kind of resolution…more fun!
OK maybe I didn't understand the video, you do talk fast, but I'm left wondering, what about this justifies spending soo much money instead of just emulating? It seems you'd have to spend quite a bit just for retro systems. Those of which can be emulated with ease on pc or even your phone
I have 2 already ❤️Bought a 2nd DE10 Nano before the pandemic hit. One will be installed into that Checkmate monitor.
Having 2 means twice the fun…I think lol
Can you use a lightgun with a vga monitor via mister?
Also what are the savestates like? I'm told they're quite limited in number but that was a year or so ago and I'll need loads for playing shmups
You can use a vga monitor if you like double to 31kHz but some light guns may still get a little angry about it in my experience. Save states are generally NOT in cores. A few have them
You did forget the shopping links for the DE-10 Nano by the way XD
It’s in there. MiSTerAddons. He has DE10s ready to go and they aren’t in Taiwan
Whats your favourite way to use controllers on the mister? which one? which connection?
Depends on the core honestly. Tons of options. Using Reflex Adapt a lot lately. I just did a vid on it
@@VideoGameEsoterica ah thanks, i missed that one!
It’s a fun one. Def check it out
@@VideoGameEsoterica will do!

I have the Pi 5 next to me for videos soon
If my DE10 died right now I would IMMEDIATELY order a new one. There is no question.
Nice I think this is the video I was looking for
👍
I have 2 misters (got the first one before the boom so around $100) and I plan to get a Mars when it becomes available. FPGA baby!
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with MARS in 2024
"a hundred and change arcade cores"? I don't know how many rbf files there are (a "core"), but so far as how many arcade games are available, after a first/fresh update_all... there are well over 1,000. I haven't counted recently but I think it might be approaching 1,400.
I’m def counting CPS / CPS 1.5 / CPS 2 as just three cores and not per game
If I had a RGB capable monitor I would totally get a mister. As it stands, the analogue pocket on the dock is scratching my FPGA itch for now.
It’s a bummer Pocket can’t handle the PS1/Saturn/N64 stuff
@@VideoGameEsoterica I’m not a big ps1/n64 guy so that’s fine. I love Saturn though but for that I already own a Saturn with a satiator so I’m good for now.
I love it all. Obviously haha
I'm just glad the price is going to plummet with competition hitting the market
The DE10 won’t change in price
Please someone explain to me does mister FPGA emulate 100% like original hardware ??
Check my playlist. I have a video on that topic :)
Big Mister over here trying to get us to buy more Misters.
Don't mind if I do.
Terasic should really have me on the payroll
I’ve debated on getting a second mister, I have the analogue single ram one. Do you think my second one should be digital dual ram version? Or another analogue
Either would be great but May as well do dual ram
Plus you can do direct video out if you need too as well
I think I’ll go digital dual ram this time. I do use my analog out when I want to play on a CRT but if I want to do that I can just use my analog mister, plus it sounds like the dual ram may be utilized more in the future although right now it’s not fully needed yet, thanks for the tips
Yeah I’d def go dual for a second build
I bought a de-10 Nano for about $125 off Amazon during the pandemic which wasn't that long ago so it makes me sick how much the prices of these have gone up. Would I buy one today at the current prices if I didn't have one? The answer is yes of course. However what I can't do anymore is buy one as gifts.. If it was still about $240 total for everything then it would be something possible. For $500+ now though, it's just too much.
Inflation is a killer
After seeing your retrotink 4k review I’m pondering building a second mister with analog output
You can just use direct video out of the HDMI port. I’ll have a video on it soon
@@VideoGameEsoterica but won’t there be a little more input lag that way?
I’ll be testing that. I don’t believe it will be much if any difference
@@VideoGameEsoterica please do and let us know. The community demands and appreciates it haha.

Like I always tell everyone with a HiVision- “you gotta get a mister. Plugs right into the RGB socket, so easy.”
Ahh yes everyone can go run out to the HiVision store and grab one!
@@VideoGameEsoterica looks suspiciously like some dudes garage but hurry now stock is limited
It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the HiVision again
Here's a question.. anyone know how much lag am I'm getting if I hook my MiSter up HDMI to my PC capture card (PCI) and play off of OBS?? I dont have a CRT tv or anything. Im curious if/how much lag I'm getting tho playing like this.
Too much IMO. I can’t play from OBS personally
Would love to see Sin and Punishment played with a mouse 😊
Rather than spend the $$$ on another MISTer, get a TATE set-up. TCL TV's can be rotated any direction without damage. My 50'' TV cost $350 new and delivered. The stand cost $40, the fitting cost $80.
I have no more room for any screens lol I’m drowning in them
That face when the "junk" you bought for university course work turns out to be more useful to all the emulation devices you bought since graduating ... 2024 retro gaming here I come.

One thing missing here, for the budget conscious retro gamer is answering the “what about a raspberry pi (or whatever)?” question.
Shh don’t spoil upcoming videos ;)

@@VideoGameEsoterica Make it a top 10 list
Maybe one day
The best bang for your buck is a second hand Wii ($30), easy software jailbreak and gets you about 80% of what MiSTer does.
Wii’s are cheap as dirt
maybe the wii-u is even a better buy as it has a built in HDMi output already ?
I wonder how much those are going for now

No need to convince me! My MiSTer is the best investment I've ever made in retro gaming in my entire life. It has been a game changer for me and I spend more time with my MiSTer these days than any other gaming device.

If you're out there and you're on the fence about this, get it. I'm someone who does not splurge on personal items, and this was so worth it. It continues to be more worth it by the day, as people keep releasing cores. ❤
I’ve yet to meet anyone who regretted their purchase
if you think about it, they sell it preety cheap for all that it DOES lmaoo, i didnt knew it was THAT good
For what it does it’s a bargain
I plan to get a mister pi since it is cheaper
Always a good option
I hope u got one cause all the batches are sold out right now.
Just a raspberri pi 4 or 5 or a cheap pc can do all that too for 1/3 of what this cost 😅
That’s not really the point
I have mister, rgb-pi and coinopps, i prefer rgb-pi for crt.
I’m straight MiSTer or real hardware for that myself

I love my De10-Nano. It's a shame to live in an almost communist country like Brazil. To buy it now we have to pay up to 60% of the price + shipping. Very expensive, and almost impossible for those earning minimum wage.
I’ve heard from a lot of Brazilian commenters about how bad it is. Almost cheaper to fly somewhere and bring it home
ill be playing the mister until the day I die then ill stop
Solid plan 😂
Na - used an old laptop and emulation and it did all this for a fraction of the cost.
Oh I see now ...
Debating a PS5 for a few new games, or a MiSTer for _thousands of games instantly_
I will say my PS5 is mostly collecting dust these days
Nice video. But one thing you haven't told ist that all of this is piracy except you own all the boards, games etc...
So yeah it's cheaper but the only real legal way to play all this stuff that isn't ported to another current platform, is to buy those expensive cartridges or arcade boards, etc...
I show what I own so 🤷🏻♂️
@@VideoGameEsoterica
Don't get me wrong. It's not about yourself.
I just wanted to mention it.
Pirating old stuff that isn't available at an affordable price for ordinary mortals is a necessary evil for me.
I wouldn’t even call it evil lol
no difference from emulation on the pi to be honest.
I def wouldn’t say that
"no difference from emulation" you couldn't be more misinformed.
I'm holding out for the Mars
I wouldn’t pass MiSTer but that’s me. Mars is still mostly unproven
MiSTer is my stop. N64 is my nostalgia limit and desires and anything newer than that is meh to me. Once Robert Peip developed the N64 core, buying a MiSTer was a done deal.
DC with ODE on Tink 4K was so good I don’t think I’d need anything else. But I’ll still take it lol
should look out for the arcade replay 2 instead of mars
That is an interesting concept too
Not to rain on your fpga purist retro parade, but failing to mention that you can download retro arch on your android smartphone for free is a marketing gimmick if you can even tell the difference between that and real hardware.
Lol what?
It’s not cheap when you own three…
One for my studio, one for my PVM and one for dual ram testing / my television in my living room.
KOF 2003 is approx 90MB or 716mbit. There are plenty of 64MB plus games on Neo Geo
MiSTer isn’t a company and I show plenty of software emulation on the channel. Price comparison…$450 to zero

And?
And? 😂

$500 fucking dollars.
Well you don’t need to earn the $500 that way but it’s always an option
Very expensive elitist emulator, lacking lots of quality of life things of software emulators... But I'm kind of an elitist in this kind of things, for now I will stick to real hardware and software emulation, but I will keep watching the development of hardware emulation
It really isn’t elitist. It’s a diff way to accomplish something. Just more money
I’ve been broke before too. Just budget better and you’ll be alright.
