I got my first MiSTer a few days ago and your videos about the build and setup made it an absolute breeze to get going! As an aside to this video, in Rainbow Islands, there are 3 hidden islands based on around Taito's back catalogue: Bubble Island (based around Bubble Bobble, predictably!), Darius Island (I'm sure you can guess the theme from the name) and Magical Island, which features characters and the music from Fairland Story. I think this is where I am personally most familiar with it.
I gave this a try on the old Taito Legends collection on PS2. I ended up really liking it. It's a fun game of this style and it's quite charming as you say. I love the idea of turning enemies into cake. The continue system in this one is weird and it's too easy to mess up and lose your progress. It happened to me and I was pretty far into it. Save states are your friend for this game. I did go back and beat it via MAME due to having save states. The dragon at the end is pretty tough. I also remember a really tough stage near the end because of a certain jump. I don't know where I stumbled onto the info, but I learned if you hold up while jumping, you jump ever so slightly higher, and that was necessary for that one jump that gave me trouble.
i dont remember that in the arcade. its a really neat looking puzzle game. like those unique ones. happy new year. not sure what my favorite obscure core is yet.
It won’t be something I’m purchasing for a vid (I paid for the 4K) so if Mike Chi wants to send one I’ll totally do a series of vids. If not then I can’t really justify the spend when I have the full fat 4K
This along with - Chack`n PoP - are the appetizers they just don`t have the special sauce of - Bubble Bobble - Not a complaint just the path of history.
In my opinion the absolute best game in this genre is Tumblepop, I believe it was made by some of the same people who made Joe and Mac. It allows you to choose which stages you wanna do first and scales difficulty accordingly. Has awesome boss fights at then end of each world, cool powerups, nice sprites and the characters control really tight. I could say a lot more, however I'd just suggest instead of watching gameplay you go and play it with an open mind. It's one of those games you get a feel for.

Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year bro. Keep up the great work you do for us in the community. 8^)
Same to you! Because you really are one of my fav commenters. The Garfield aspect does help haha. Happy New Years!
Love this sort of game, dig dug, pengo, Mr do, bubble bobble and plenty more.
Me too. Such a fun genre which I hope we see make a little bit of a comeback in 2025
Have you tried "Blue's journey'? A great game
I have it on AES. Fun little Platformer

It’s a good bit of fun. Simple pick up and play
The unexplored world of one screen platformer
A classic genre that’s near to dead these days
@@VideoGameEsoterica does Cash Cow counts as 1 screen platformer?
I feel like it does? Sure the screen scrolls but it’s still locked to one basic level

not sure what my favorite obscure core is yet.
I don’t know if I ever saw it in an arcade back in the day
I hope you do a retrotink 4k ce video soon-ish
