    I backpacked this area in the mid '90s as a teen. I remember my friend's dad telling me that my machete wouldn't be needed in the desert and was just extra weight. Guess who got to lead the way because they had a machete! 😂

    One of the things I appreciate about your adventures (and there are many) is your experience and ability to vocalize the nuances of each trip and terrain. For example, highlighting not all miles are equal. Every video holds nuggets of truth way more valuable than just gear reviews. You have a very balanced approach.
    Keep up the great work!

    As a new subscriber I have been watching, and enjoying!, a bunch of your videos. In one, you praised some Astral shoes, which I have used for years. So, it's not impossible that someone has mentioned this before, but if you know you are going to get your feet wet then neoprene socks, instead of your regular wooly ones,are a good choice. 3mm are maybe a bit too rigid, but 2mm are soft and flexible and fit inside most of my outdoor shoes no problem. I use them for what is known here in Taiwan as 'river tracing', which, for me, is basically just hiking up rivers.They are comfortable enough to wear to hike TO the river ( in fact I find them more comfortable than regular socks most of the time), keep your feet warm in cold water, are very light, very cheap ( 10 bucks), quick drying and keep small stones and grit away from your feet. Also, even if you used them for nothing else, because they generally have grippy little rubber dimples on the bottom, they would still merit a place in your pack for use as camp bootees over your regular socks or just to keep your feet warm in your sleeping bag. I have no interest in fishing, but some wading gear like the felt soled wading boots, or the kind of boots where you can manually change the soles from regular rubber ones for the hike in to the felt for wet rocks etc are pretty good for just wet hikes. Frogg Toggs make some, Simms and Korkers have good reputations for this kind of shoe.

    Stoked to have stumbled on this by accident !! and great to hitch a spot as hiking companion in a place I've always wanted to go. So well edited and put together -- thank you so much!

    Eric, thank you so much for showing the beauty of this area. Each time I go out I am in awe of how close I get to live to such amazing beauty in a desert that is very much alive and full of surprises. This is also why I want a freestanding tent so I won't have to struggle in the sand and slick rock.

      @@eric_hanson Thanks! I could go out from Spencer Flats which is about 8 miles RT. Our April trip will be hiking a portion of Spencer Flats, Big Horn slot canyon, and capturing footages of the Burr Trail. We're also doing a couple of canyons from The Behind the Reef Road in San Rafael Swell in route to Escalante for some better drone footage. My wife is limited in what she can do so I have to accept things for what's possible. We hike with Mark Austin who lives in Escalante. Maybe the Cosmic Ash Tray for a trip when my wife isn't along. Feel free to give me shout anytime or if you're around Montrose. Maybe a trip back to Ophir to look for your phone after the snow is gone!!! 😂 I understand how that can feel after losing a drone along the Oregon coast. Stay well, safe, and keep uploading those great videos!

    So beautiful! Great video guys!! Eric, love your gear, but please don't bring a compression sack for your quilt, just stuff the quilt at the bottom of the pack and everything above it will compress it anyway. That compression sack must weigh quite a bit, for that weight difference you could switch to the X-Mid pro 2 person tent lol

    • @eric_hanson
      @eric_hanson  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The compression sack also serves as a waterproof bag. With all the water we hiked through and the cold weather I gotta make sure I have a dry sleeping bag at the end of the day.

    • @michelstronguin6974
      @michelstronguin6974 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@eric_hansonI always use a Nylofume bag inside my backpack to make sure the things that need to be dry stay dry. That also includes clothes for camp, battery pack and so on... I start by packing my sleeping bag at the bottom of that Nylofume bag, and everything else that needs to be dry I put on top of it so that the weight of the stuff creates a compression effect on quilt. Than I close that bag, and I place all the other stuff on top. This not only saves the weight of the dedicated compression sack, but also there is a good video on TH-cam that shows that a compression sack creates a large hard shape inside your bag, and everything that results from that.

      I had multiple pairs of socks and a second pair of shoes to change into at camp. That made a huge difference. Luckily I didn't get any blisters or have foot problems other than cold feet that one morning!

    I just noticed at about 5:28 on the right of the screen that there seems to be a huge hand print made of the desert varnish four fingers and a thumb (hand print of God?). Love this video !!

      It's the Hyperlite Camera Pod. It's great for backpacking photographers.

    Wait a minute - you chose the weight of a chair over the weight of an extra pair of socks and a few Hot Hands

      I brought extra socks. I contemplated using another pair for the second day but i wanted to have more dry socks available.

ULTRA LITE.... filter !! i have a lite hand size " pump " style filter that is years old , still going and WAY faster to collect water and do field clean or repair. but i get the draw...or... lure off ULTRA LITE..
