The 70s was the golden era of horror. TCM was raw but not brutal in the sense of gore and violence. It's more what you don't see and also getting over the shock and frantic pace of what is happening. Its a documentary/gorilla style of film making. The movie called The Town That Dreaded Sundown was a template for that style. The 70s did turn up the sex and violence to an 11 tho. Slasher sleeze (and I do love these films) movie like New York Ripper and Maniac (1980) are a prime example. Along with the Italian Giallo films of the 70s got down and dirty. The 70s gave us a wide variety of horror.
This is the movie that kicked off the whole home invasion horror genre. It is horrifying seeing poor leatherface be terrorized by these wild teens.

It's something modern horror movies cannot capture anymore. Everything looks too clean.

Fun facts about TCM:
-This story is loosely based on the murderer Ed Gein, who also inspired stories such as; "Pyscho" and "Silence of the Lambs". The movie is NOT a true story.
-Cinematographer for this film, Daniel Pearl, also did the Cinematography for the remake in 2003, starring Jessica Biel.
-Marilyn Burns (Sally) did many of her own stunts. The scene where she jumps off the second story window. She filmed jumping through the window and it was cut with her jumping off of the roof.
-The actor who played "grandpa" hated the makeup so much, they filmed all of his stuff in one day.
-The scene where there's a chicken, in order to make sure the chicken was alive, because it was so hot. Gunner Hansen (Leatherface), as he's running pass the cage, he smacks it to wake it up.
-None of the cast liked working with the man who played Franklin. He was a character actor and stayed in character the entire time.
-When "Jerry" was killed, that was his real reaction before Leatherface killed him. Someone pulled him down by the belt because he didn't know what was gonna happen in that scene.
-The chainsaw is 100% real and caused a few problems on set with safety. The scene when we first see it, Gunner Hansen (Leatherface) had to tell the actor to not move, otherwise he would've cut his face. Any scene with Leatherface running, it's a real chainsaw and in one cut scene, he slipped on the ground and almost killed himself. So, in wide shots of him running, you'll notice the actor not abruptly stop to change directions. Also the scene where Leatherface cuts his own leg. They put a metal pad with hamburger meat and fake blood on top. Because of the heat, Gunner Hansen actually thought his real leg was being sawed into, so his reaction was real.
-In the dinner scene when they cut Sally's finger with a knife to feed "grandpa". They (the actors) were so delirious due to the heat and the working conditions, Gunner Hansen ACTUALLY cut Marilyn Burns' finger with the knife and put it in the actor (Grandpa's) mouth, for real.
-The ending of the film abruptly stops because Gunner Hansen swung the chainsaw around so hard, he nearly hit the camera, causing the camera operator and Tobe Hooper to drop the camera and run.
Honestly I would have left that last part about dropping the camera into the movie!
Great trivia
The actor who played "Grandpa" was 19 at the time.
Gunnar Hansen had to pause and cut at the brush and trees because he kept catching up to Marilyn Burns. She was really getting cut up by the branches and briars because she couldn't see.
That bit about Gunnar Hansen cutting Marylin Burns' finger is probably my favorite bit of movie trivia. I remeber watching the commentery in high school, and I just thought it was so intriguing.
I believe some inspiration was also taken from the Bloody Bender family -- a whole family of serial killers from the 1870's

That shutter door is one of the most terrifying horror movie props I can think of.
The sound design is incredible in this movie. That door slam is absolutely ear-piercing.
Gave me goosebumps when the door closes solidifies the horror you feel because we know right then were about to see what's behind that door.
Yeah, that was the scene that made it go from strange, low budget movie to pure horror classic.
And is 10 times better in the 2003 remake

Fun fact: the dinner scene was filmed over two days with the windows covered with temperatures reaching triple digits and Gunnar Hansen wore the same outfit throughout filming.

Fun fact: The Icelandic-born actor who played Leatherface, Gunnar Hansen, was an author, and considered many of his acting roles to be side-gigs.
In his later years, he looked like Sam Elliot combined with Santa Claus, and he was supposedly just as friendly as this hypothetical amalgamation of bearded gentlemen!
In 80s Europe this movie had a reputation for being extremely violent. It was banned all over, not because of content but because of moral panic about "video violence". So i was quite surprised when i finally got to see it (uncut, because what would you cut?) and discovered a fairly tame, but well made and somewhat disturbing, horror classic. And on release in 1974 it was like nothing else before it.
Hooper was going for a PG rating. PG-13 wouldn't exist for another decade or so but if it were released today I think that's what it would get. No bad language, no nudity, and the gore was mostly implied.
I got the chance to meet the hitch hiker at a convention once, didn't even know he was gonna be there, real friendly dude
He is also a really good voice actor, being present in a bunch of animes and video games (his most recent game roles were Two-Face, Killer Croc and Detective Bullock in DC Universe Online)

@@unluckydiablo9502 VCRs are expensive? I'm assuming you mean new ones. I work at a store that cleans out estates and sells the contents, I put $5 on the VCRs and they don't sell, I can't tell you how many I've just chucked in the garbage. VHS was a bad format, Beta was better quality but Sony screwed themselves by making it a closed format and trying to lease the equipment needed to produce content. VHS was a more open format that anyone could get into and was cheaper, so low budget stuff (adult movies mainly) adopted it and eventually made it win out.
If you look up "Ed Gein" he is the real life dude they based leatherface off of. I think he only killed (or was suspected of killing) a few people, but he was big into grave robbing and turning corpses into furniture. He lived in Wisconsin, and has inspired quite a few movies.
Gein was also the inspiration for several characters in the Hannibal series of movies.

The idea for a chainsaw came from when Tobe Hooper was standing in a crowded department store at Christmas and thought how he wished he could pull a chainsaw off the wall and mow everybody down.
I believe he was only ever convicted of one murder, or maayyybee two. But he robbed a lot of graves and had a lot of human furniture.

The final girl laughing at the end wasn’t in the script. A good chunk of the finale, as they shot the film in sequence, was destroyed when the film accidentally got exposed to sunlight and was ruined, so they had to reshoot that entire scene. The character is laughing because she’s lost her mind, the actress is laughing for the same reason.
The movie that made me fall in love with horror. Also the ending is one of the most iconic and terrifying scenes ever.

This is my favorite horror ending, hands down.
The OG Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an absolute masterpiece! My all time favorite horror film.
Fun fact: Despite the words “chainsaw massacre” in the title, only one character is actually killed with a chainsaw, though the girl at the end very nearly suffers that fate, and the scene of her being chased by Leatherface with the chainsaw has become one of the most iconic images from the series.
Your discussion about gore then vs now perfectly describes why I don't find modern horror scary: over-reliance on gore and jump scares. Because they can, so of course they do. Back then, the censor limits actually helped make the films more disturbing. Because what you don't see is always scarier than what you do see. And no-one has nightmares about jump scares lol. Some films are still good. Even in the past decade or so. But a lot of them are indie horrors or at least smaller ones that don't get as much hype. Things like Don't Breathe, The Witch, Get Out, Hereditary don't over do blood or gore at any one point, and so are all quite good imo. Never takes blood to scare people, it more kind of disgusts some people, which is not the reaction you want

Tobe Hooper limited the amount of overt gore in the film in the hopes of scoring a PG rating. But, by doing this with this subject matter, Hooper managed to inadvertently straddle a line that most horror directors struggle with: He made a horror film that's *genuinely* horrifying.
It's still the scariest one of the franchise. The subsequent sequels and reboots just went overboard with the blood and gore versus genuine scares.

I love this movie because it's not actually that gory or bloody. Most kills are left for you to imagine how it looked. It makes it creepier in my opinion
Exactly. Less is more, especially when your imagination is worse than anything you could see on screen.
The director actually shot and edited the film in a way that he thought would get him a PG rating its why alot isn't shown but it did exactly the opposite and made it even more scary.

The idea of sausages made from humans immediately makes me think of the the campy horror movie "Motel Hell" with classic western movie star Rory Calhoun.
In my opinion, this may be one of the most viscerally terrifying films ever made. I think Marylin Burns gives one of the most convincing panic attack/mental breakdown performances I've ever seen, not to mention, the way it was filmed, especially at the dinner scene when the sound design would come in with those screeches, and it would cut to the shots of her face, and eventually it zooms in on the terror in her eyes, the camera work itself is a damn panic attack! Such a fantastic film!
One of my favorite movie moments is when Drayton Sawyer (the oldest) starts beating Sally with the broom bristles and she's so distraught at that point it actually subdues her. I just laugh hysterically when he hits her with the broom bristles like he's trying to swat a fly.
Fun facts
All of the human bones are real,back then you could order bones from 3rd world countries
All the animal parts are real and were scavenged from roads in the area. And the smell on set made people vomit
The girl is actually getting her finger sliced on camera and didn't know it was going to happen, so her reaction is 100% genuine.
Man Hollywood is crazy with all the behind the scenes stories I've read.
The money used to distribute the movie was funneled from the profits of Deep Throat.
Real bones were cheaper than prosthetic ones then.
The thing that freaked me out about this movie was when I found out that the skeleton in that upstairs room wasn't a prop. It was an actual real human skeleton. The producer Tobe Hooper said that it cost less to use a real one then to buy a fake one because the fakes were very expensive. That's crazy! I always wondered whose skeleton that was that they used and how there were even able to get it.
Leatherface wears other faces to take the place of a personality; whatever he needs to do, he puts on a different person's face like the Old Lady face in the middle of the movie when he's being domestic, the Pretty Lady mask when they have a dinner gust because he's a polite country boy, and the Killing mask he wears the most in this movie.
A lot of younger audiences don’t think that films like this, Psycho, Halloween and Friday the 13th are scary because there’s not quick cutting loud jump scares. Back in the day it was about atmosphere and mood.
One of the really strong points of this movie is the acting;
it is freaking perfect, and scarily convincing.
One of that best horrors ever made.
The rawness makes it feel so real, almost like a mock-doc/found footage.

I've driven through Texas, and driven past one of those giant slaughterhouses. The smell is indescribable. It lingers even when you're miles down the road.
FUN FACT: The narrator at the opening of the movie was John Larroquette, who played Dan on the TV show Night Court

Even funnier when you remember the Night Court episode when Dan's parents come to visit and he's embarrassed because they're hillbillies. Always wondered if that was a nod to TCM.

Such a classic! So low budget, but still so effectively scary.
This is the first film me & my friends got when they started releasing the video nasties with certificates here in Britain. The scene where Leatherface first appears scared us all.
The youngest brother's name is 'Nubbins', you only hear the oldest brother briefly yell it at him in the driveway while calling him an idiot. Nubbins is in the next film as well (TCM2), which is a direct sequel to this movie.
I remember back in the 80’s when I first saw it on cable, it was so gritty and felt real compared to other slasher movies I had seen. And yep, based on Ed Gein.

@@adrien6990 I don't know if I'd say it's better than the 1st, but it's a great sequel for sure. Dennis Hopper and Caroline Williams were fantastic in their roles. You'll definitely have a fun time with this one. I saw it when I was 6 way back when, and I still love it at 42 lol.
I saw this in 1975 or 1976 at the drive in theater. That's about when I got my driver's license. It might be the first movie I took myself to see.
I have never seen a horror movie before this one. It scared the Hell out of me.
After this one, I've never really liked horror movies.
The opening shot of the corpse is one of my favourites in any movie ever. It sets the tone and the vibe perfectly. I love movies that feel sweaty, ones that you can almost feel like you can smell

Leatherface's teeth were made by a dentist friend of Gunnar Hansen and the he said the reason for the different masks he wears is that Leatherface's personality changes with each mask depending on who he wants to be.
Leatherface is just a scared little buddy.

This classic horror movie is when I fell in love with horror movies as a kid...yes a kid.
This movie, along with Night of the Living Dead, was shot so poorly because of budget constraints that it almost leads one to believe you are watching home video footage. I don't think either movie would be at the top of the horror pantheon if they hadn't been on a shoestring budget.

Slight emendation to that: the 2003 remake was shot by the same DP as the 1974 original and it looks pretty goddamn good. Now the film overall sucks but photographically it's stellar and you can see the same compositional care in the original, despite the lack of lights.
I personally think tbe film itself is shot really well for the most part, the shoestring budget is mostly evident in the acting and choppy ADR imo. I love the ways they capture the real Texas locations with the sun at certain times of day. That low angle of Pam walking towards the house. The zoom ins on Marilyn Burns eyes during the dinner scene. That huge wideshot of the van picking up the hitchhiker.

Modern horror is too styalised, it's like painting a Warhammer figure to look wartorn. The best horror is gritty, modern horror has no subtlety.
I love that Mrs Movies started a psychological profile on Leatherface. I would love to hear her final synopsis when she is done with series!!!
Leatherface was inspired by serial killer and grave robber Ed Gein whom was the basis for Norman Bates in Psycho and Buffalo Bill in Silence Of The Lambs.

Actually he was only proven to kill a single person. The rest were robbed from graves. Although there is definitely suspicion of more.

Ed Gein was also the 'inspiration' for the Bloody Face character in AHS. Pretty sure an episode of Criminal Minds was loosely based on him (TCM), too.

Interestingly,according to the director,one of the main reasons there's little gore is because he submitted the script to the MPAA and was told if nothing was shown they could get a PG !
My family and I watched this movie on Cinemax 12 years ago and it scared the hell out of us! My mom couldn't sleep for a week after seeing it. Lol!!

The working title of this movie was "Headcheese". Beyond Giean, another inspiration was the infamous kid story "Three Billygoat Gruff ".

I never get tired of seeing people lose their TCM virginity. Especially younger viewers who have little to no experience with a film this raw. Whenever this shows locally during Halloween season, I love going to the midnight show and watching the audience.
Did you know that John Larroquette was the narrator at the beginning? The house was purchased and moved to Kingsland Texas. It's a little northwest of Austin. It's a restaurant
I'm glad you picked up on the subtleties of Leatherface's character. He's really complex for a horror villain.
The whole family aspect and the lore behind it is by far my favorite part of the series, and really helps it stand apart from other franchises (when they get it right).
Also a heads up so you aren't confused later, the continuity after Part 2 gets weird because the rights kept changing hands. Part 3 doesn't really connect to Part 2, and Part 4 completely ignores both 2 and 3. I don't know who decided that all four are officially in the same timeline, but they must not have been paying attention.
I was 8 years old when I first saw this movie. It was part of a horror triple feature with Creepshow 2 and Near Dark (another underrated movie you guys should check out).

This is still on my Top 10 favorite movie list. So glad you two watched this one because it's such a classic!

During the chase scenes where Leatherface is chasing Sally, Gunnar Hansen used the chainsaw to cut branches just so Marilyn Burns could run a little further ahead because she ran so slowly..and in the climax when she couldn't get in the back of the truck Hansen used a limp to slow himself
The actresses that screamed alot were called scream queens. I haven't seen all the iterations of this but I think I liked either the rob zombie remake in early 2000s or there was one other in the mod 2000s that I liked.

This movie is based on Ed Gein of Plainfield Wisconsin. Also, Psycho, Two on a Meat Hook and other shows are based on him. I have seen all these movies. I met and talked with Tobe Hooper, Leatherface and Marilyn Burns. Tobe Hooper had the reputation of not being talkative, but we had a good time talking about his directing an episode of the TV show The Equalizer. Marilyn Burns had a bad time with Neville Brand physically abusing her while making the movie Eaten Alive. As you did you have to put this movie in time and place. It made an impact.
This movie is older than me by 7 years and I could enjoy it like I'm seeing it for the 1st time.
The beginning opening line is done by the Lawyer from night court. His first gig, he was paid $500 worth of weed.

Not going to lie...one of the main reasons I decided to see this movie was because I heard John Larroquette was the narrator.
Franklin's little snack there...a lot of people have been theorizing that it's actually a schlong.
Still one of the most frightening films ever made. The sound design is really excellent, and as creepy as anything i've seen. The scream from that guy at 20:27 was genuine, including the look on his face.
There is so much screaming at the end I remember my mom knocking on the wall and saying "what are you watching?" when I saw this for the first time when I was a teenager.
I love how your daughter comes in and without saying it says, “ Eh uhhh, I’m done with my movie, this one will be next tall ones!”

Fun Fact: The bbq place is now a bbq place and they have cabin rentals and camping. I've been there a few times. Great bbq.

That hitchhiker actor said making the movie was the worst experience of his life...and he was in Vietnam.
He's not a zombie, he's 120+ years old -- and also he's not a vampire but he **is** vampiric, it's how he lived for so long.
Fun fact -- the actor playing Leatherface cut her for real.

I always let the world know in a reaction to this movie that I live a few miles from that gas station. It's just a bbq joint now. They sometimes have an employee or two stand outside with the Leatherface costume and a chainsaw to promote it. Obviously not now in the summer but closer to the spooky months, you'll see a kid waving the chainsaw around waving people over. Pretty cool.

I don't know If I'm so addicted to horror movies and don't get easily scared but this is the first movie that scared me for 3-5 weeks, I watched the entire Friday the 13th and Halloween franchise in that time, none of them scared me (Halloween 2007 remake did kinda) but when I wanted to watch this one It actually scared me alot.
You saying Leatherface is the caretaker of the family is a very accurate assessment imo
