This weapon is quite very decent. If only I will try to do ranger playthrough. I'm slowly understanding about weapon reviews lately, even though it took about two days for a beginner like me. Great video, anyway!
i remember Wand of Sparking using it in the "no E's" challenge where you couldn't use any armor/accessory/tool/weapon that contained a E in it, and the piranha gun is probably what saved the whole challenge without it being almost impossible its also a really good mix between the dodging-based gameplay of summoner and high dps of ranger (at least pre-1.4, summoner is also focused on fighting now but whatever you get the point)
I still used it when it was quite weak simply because it was fun watching it chase down enemies one by one. Oh and they also chase teleporting enemies in the dungeon such as necromancers and diabolists like crazy!
You forgot to mention that if one enemy is latched, any subsequent enemies that touch it will receive piranha damage as well, so it technically has AOE. This is why it managed to eat those mimics really quickly, since their hitboxes overlapped each other.
To be honest, I've almost never used the Piranha gun due to how it works. However, I never knew about its crowd control capabilities, so I'll take that in mind for future playthroughs.
back when i used to play on mobile, this was one of my favourite weapons to use. haven't played ranger in a while though, so it's good to hear it's still a solid weapon.
I think all biome chest weapons should be available either right when hardmode starts or at least post mech. It’s hard to justify the grind for these weapons at that stage of the game.
Agreed, most of them are literally only useful for Duke Fishron when it comes to boss fights. They all have such a short span of being strong (the only difference is vampire knives, because it offers free healing).
Imo pre plantera, it’s like stuff like zappinator where getting them is a free buff. Only problem is most biome chest weapons suck at the point you obtain them
Honestly, the Piranha Gunn is one of my favorite biome chest weapons, right behind the vampire knives. Good dps, locking onto enemies, automatically retargeting when an enemy is slain.
I did a calamity playthrough on malice mode with some friends, and one of them went ranger. He decided to try the piranha gun out, and oh my god he HARD carried for some time, since he could just hit the boss once and focus on dodging all the time. Please use it if you get the chance, the buffs made it SUPER worth using!
i got it in my ranger playthrough because i had 5 jungle keys (farms are fun) and felt obligated to pick it up, then when i fought golem i noticed that it was dealing more damage than my other guns after i ran out of chlorophyte bullets. this thing absolutely destroys.

Loved it ever since and I make it a point to try getting it during every range play through!
I remember randomly getting a jungle key and thinking it was a big meme to use the piranha gun, but then I used it against Golem and Lunatic Cultist & it absolutely fucking destroyed them with ease
because of the piranha gun's ability to hit multiple targets and slow enemies, AND auto track enemies on screen, this has always been one of my favorite weapons to cheese events with. Glad to see how far it has come since the beginning
I'm doing a ranger class playthrough rn and honestly I didn't even consider on using this gun before watching this video since there are tons of other ranger weapons that just seems cooler
I played this game for like 10 years now and got so used to how goos certain weapons are that its so cool to see that some are actually stronger than I believed them to be. Love that they keep patching and rebalancing stuff.
I love to see that the piranha gun got an upgrade. I used to always use it back in the day, solely because it was good to use with a lucky coin to farm money.
Fun fact: the piranhas actually RETAIN any bonuses that they had when launched. Meaning that, if you wear something like the shroomite armor, go into stealth mode and latch the piranhas at one strong enemy/boss, the piranhas will STILL attack the enemy as if you had the stealth attack bonus, even if you aren't anymore. This is a huge deal, considering if you do this before a boss fight you: - Will deal continuous, very strong and quick damage - You can just 100% focus on dodging and let the piranhas defeat the boss for you - The piranhas deal like 50% more damage that usual, at no cost or downside - You don't need to be close to the boss, they will still attack outside your screen - You don't need any ammo - You don't need any setup - Worst case scenario the piranhas somehow detach and you spend 1% of your brain to shoot them again once - As they CAN'T miss, that means you naturally just do more damage in general over the course of battle - As they automatically home into enemies, that means smaller enemies/minions won't be that much of a pain, and even can aid you to home into the boss if you struggle with fast or bosses with little hitboxes The piranha gun is my favourite terraria weapon ever and I love it to death. I just wish more people understood how seriously amazing, fun and satisfying it is to use
My bias against the piranha gun came from the fact I first played Terraria on 3ds. I was always a fan of both piranha gun and scourge of the corruptor after being lucky enough to get them in console's 1.2. They weren't the best but I liked their convenience, decent dps and cool concept. I think I actually killed golem with piranha gun being in a box lol ( remind you it was still 1.2 and my golem area sucked - it was very small ) I also tested basically every weapon in 1.4 on weaker enemies ( both prehardmode and early hardmode ) on my main world with normal difficulty and these 2 are doing a good job. It's hard to say if they are worth farming but it's always worth a try
I have always used the gun since day one. Good for the jungle all on it's own. Was a bit surprised when I cam back after being gone a year to it being buffed and firing 3 piranhas
In my friends and I's Don't Starve world, I was Ranger, and I intended to use this weapon, but completely forgot about it. In part because the others think of it as a trash biome chest drop and don't recommend it, and in part because of how life works it is just infrequent when we could get together to actually play. Sucks getting older, man.
I remember using this to kill the Dungeon Guardian for the first time. This made it my favorite of the biome chest weapons, so seeing it get this much attention from the devs really makes me happy.

I always viewed piranha gun as a nice weapon for ranger, even pre-buff its combo of stunlocking, crowd control, and focused dps made for something that provided ranger arsenals a lot of utility. most crowd control ranger weapons need dedicated ammo and require you to line up enemies, but piranha gun naturally groups grounded enemies up with stunlock regardless of player position, and in ideal conditions you can bait more enemies into the ball of pain. its nice for many flying enemies too, often being able to stun lock them to death from a single hit. The focused dps was handy for killing things like mothram or ice golems that fly around a lot or lag behind other enemies that get in the way.
You were absolutely correct in saying that underwhelming items get ignored even when buffed later. I've been unimpressed with this thing since it debuted and the buffs haven't helped it any for me. I recently finished an Expert playthrough with a friend and the moment I got the Piranha Gun, it effectively became my primary weapon for a long time. Using it became effortless, even inside the Hardmode Dungeon. The only slight issue is that you should take note if all 3 Piranha projectiles are onscreen at all. If not, then you should reshoot them and ensure all 3 hit their mark. Other than that, for a Ranger Playthrough, they are absolutely stellar.
When grinding for dungeon keys, I also find another spot that has good enemies in it; so I always end up farming for my jungle key in the lower chamber of the temple.
I farmed for this in my no-crafting-no-NPC playthrough. For hours. Didn't quite hold up to other weapons of its progression point, even when you take every crafted weapon out of the race - Possessed Hatchet got me the better results, while being easier to use.
One time I had plantera drop her trophy, Th Axe, and THE JUNGLE KEY at the SAME TIME. Should’ve bought a lottery ticket instead. I’d also like to point out that I’ve had a jungle key drop, accidentally, without fail, on every one of my last 5-6 playthroughs. No other biome keys, just the jungle one. Every time. Needless to say, I’ve fallen in love with the piranha gun
I always pop off when I get the Jungle Key because I had an awesome experience with it the first time I used it, and I easily destroyed Golem and the Martian Invasion
The best example of the Piranha Gun’s strengths would be the third tier of the Old One’s Army. It makes quick work of the slow enemies, and pairs nicely with the ranger/summoner hybrid Huntress set, as that gives buffs to both the gun itself and the sentries it supports. Plus, the Piranha Gun, due to you simply latching onto foes and leaving them there, could be seen as a pseudo-ranger weapon, as you don’t really need to worry about aim or ammo and can just dodge as usual.
I used to love this gun, im a Summoner at heart but this game is so awesome that we all play multiple times as multiple things but that gun fits my Ranger playthroughs like a glove... a Summoners glove hahahaha
can also be considered the weapon of choice for those that are "oops, can't be bothered to try learn to aim and shoot every bullet, I just want chaser (bullets)" but obviously its more famous for the crowd control and allowing you to dodge without having to think about hitting your target. It only really loses usable-ness about the time you can just making homing bullets possible with some of the strongest guns which is sadly pretty much about the time you can get the weapon. But its farming potential is top notch, i would definitely use it for sure during that as you don't have to give up precious resources to have some sort of homing projectile. Its worth mentioning I pretty sure it has a duration period so it won't stay out all the time, it will eventually return to you after awhile, least from the last time i ever used it, sadly that was a long while ago. But it last so long that more often than not, this only happens during farming or bosses/events.
The reason why I think it still isn’t worth it, is if you use Lizhard bricks in the spawning, it would make it a post golem weapon and I think it just doesn’t compare even close to xeno popper with chlorophyte bullets. If you get it pre golem, it still has to compare against stake launcher tactical shotgun, and chain gun. It’s grind is much longer than that of other weapons I’ve listed so in my opinion, it is no longer bad but still not worth it.
Master Mode/For the Worthy run with friends. As a ranger, this gun was a godsend for crowd control without having to use rockets up until Martian, moon events, pillars, and moon lord. Definitely worth the grind and pickup in any run
maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but i think some criminally underrated magic weapons are the rainbow gun and toxic flask. They are both fantastic AoE weapons that absolutely tear through the events after beating plantera and/or golem. They shred the Lizhard temple, and post-plantera dungeon, as well as the pumpkin moon, frost moon, and even the martian invasion
I’m tryna make a quality of life mod for terraria and one feature I have planned J’s to give the piranha gun a upgrade, the upgrade being the razor piranha which shoots the piranha in extremly fats bursts
I need to ask this but, why do you almost never use the pyramid farm? It's so efficient and safe as well, it's also easy to build, even in pre-hardmode.
I actually had a funny moment with this weapon recently. So a friend of mine who had never played Terraria before wanted to run through it, and since I hadn't for a few years I agreed. So by the time we got to getting the Piranha Gun, he asked if it was any good and I said no because the last time I saw it was on the console version like 5 years ago and it was trash. We were both pleasantly surprised when it was amazing.
If I’m going to be honest I think they should rework the pirhana gun so it uses explosives and make the piranha gun more of a support weapon so it clings onto enemies even when you don’t hold it and deals dps and after like ten seconds explode so it is like a upgraded nail gun but better
I love the Pirahna Gun. I feel like it perfectly fits into every playstyle as a backup weapon, and it really shines when you use it alongside Summoning loadouts, because then you can focus down DPS on big targets while your little buddies take out the trash.
I liked the piranha gun and its really good with ranger accessories and armour and doesnt perform that well without it . But its a solid option if you are ever stuck on a boss And makes the lunatic cultist into one of the most trivial fights And his minions are never going to summon as the piranha gun homes into the correct cloneand all you have to do is to not get too far and go in circles around the boss

In my first playthrough (1.2 mobile), I used the Piranha Gun and the Rainbow Gun together to absolutely destroy Golem. This was before it shot 3, it used to shoot 1 piranha.
I never realised the piranhas seek out a new target upon killing their original one. I never used it since the single target dps didn't seem that good (back when it shot only one fish), and I never even bothered trying it in crowd control. I guess that's what happens when you never update first impressions! Already have a Ranger on their way to getting this so it will be interesting to see in action!
in my first playtrough(which was in 1.3.5,mobile) i got the jungle key without grinding for it,i used it a lot i really liked it it was really good,just hit enemy and hold attack and everything dies untill post golem
Starting to love this weapon. First i use this weapon it's like "bruh, this weapon is garbage". But after the buff, this weapon become really good against hordes and it's a best weapon against event
The Piranha Gun went from one of the worst to one of the best biome chest weapons in the game. I love the Piranha Gun, just in concept it's always been a favorite of mine, but it certainly wasn't amazing until now. Something I didn't know until recently is that it counts as a Launcher, which are my favorites!
When I played as a summoner a long time ago, before moon lord was released, this is what I would use while my minions were out to stack a little bit if extra damage, back then the gun was pretty terrible but it made it easy to just focus on dodging, back then it only had one piranha so it's good they've been buffing it

i use it with shroomite gear because you can still have +60% damage buff after deactivate stealth mode

It's Really good for killing the dungeon guardian. Sometimes it can take ages to get though. And it's overall a fun weapon to use

The damage and seeking on this weapon is absolutely amazing. I would use this in all of my playthroughs if not for the jungle key being so rare.

140 mud blocks with jungle grass seeds also works so you don't need to be post golem. You can be start of the game and get the key.

I’d also like to point out that I’ve had a jungle key drop, accidentally, without fail, on every one of my last 5-6 playthroughs. No other biome keys, just the jungle one. Every time. Needless to say, I’ve fallen in love with the piranha gun

I always pop off when I get the Jungle Key because I had an awesome experience with it the first time I used it, and I easily destroyed Golem and the Martian Invasion
The best example of the Piranha Gun’s strengths would be the third tier of the Old One’s Army. It makes quick work of the slow enemies, and pairs nicely with the ranger/summoner hybrid Huntress set, as that gives buffs to both the gun itself and the sentries it supports. Plus, the Piranha Gun, due to you simply latching onto foes and leaving them there, could be seen as a pseudo-ranger weapon, as you don’t really need to worry about aim or ammo and can just dodge as usual.
I picked this up while playing Calamity a week ago and it was absolutely busted.
Cant wait for the calamity alternative: The megalodon gun! You shoot 4 gigantic sharks that deal 20 digit dps!
I used to love this gun, im a Summoner at heart but this game is so awesome that we all play multiple times as multiple things but that gun fits my Ranger playthroughs like a glove... a Summoners glove hahahaha

I've used it a lot and it was very good - the only annoying thing for me was when a piranha missed it just returns and I have to refire.
can also be considered the weapon of choice for those that are "oops, can't be bothered to try learn to aim and shoot every bullet, I just want chaser (bullets)" but obviously its more famous for the crowd control and allowing you to dodge without having to think about hitting your target. It only really loses usable-ness about the time you can just making homing bullets possible with some of the strongest guns which is sadly pretty much about the time you can get the weapon. But its farming potential is top notch, i would definitely use it for sure during that as you don't have to give up precious resources to have some sort of homing projectile.
Its worth mentioning I pretty sure it has a duration period so it won't stay out all the time, it will eventually return to you after awhile, least from the last time i ever used it, sadly that was a long while ago. But it last so long that more often than not, this only happens during farming or bosses/events.
The reason why I think it still isn’t worth it, is if you use Lizhard bricks in the spawning, it would make it a post golem weapon and I think it just doesn’t compare even close to xeno popper with chlorophyte bullets. If you get it pre golem, it still has to compare against stake launcher tactical shotgun, and chain gun. It’s grind is much longer than that of other weapons I’ve listed so in my opinion, it is no longer bad but still not worth it.
Master Mode/For the Worthy run with friends. As a ranger, this gun was a godsend for crowd control without having to use rockets up until Martian, moon events, pillars, and moon lord. Definitely worth the grind and pickup in any run
maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but i think some criminally underrated magic weapons are the rainbow gun and toxic flask. They are both fantastic AoE weapons that absolutely tear through the events after beating plantera and/or golem. They shred the Lizhard temple, and post-plantera dungeon, as well as the pumpkin moon, frost moon, and even the martian invasion
I’m tryna make a quality of life mod for terraria and one feature I have planned J’s to give the piranha gun a upgrade, the upgrade being the razor piranha which shoots the piranha in extremly fats bursts
I haven't used this weapon since its been buffed but it looks really good now. I will definitely need to give this a try

I need to ask this but, why do you almost never use the pyramid farm? It's so efficient and safe as well, it's also easy to build, even in pre-hardmode.

i always had a special place in my heart for the piranha gun since it was the weapon that allowed me to beat the dungeon guardian
rare drops like jungle keys should have a fishing summoner synergy to make up for the grinding aspect
I actually had a funny moment with this weapon recently. So a friend of mine who had never played Terraria before wanted to run through it, and since I hadn't for a few years I agreed. So by the time we got to getting the Piranha Gun, he asked if it was any good and I said no because the last time I saw it was on the console version like 5 years ago and it was trash. We were both pleasantly surprised when it was amazing.
If I’m going to be honest I think they should rework the pirhana gun so it uses explosives and make the piranha gun more of a support weapon so it clings onto enemies even when you don’t hold it and deals dps and after like ten seconds explode so it is like a upgraded nail gun but better
Sorta wish the piranha gun worked like a ranged magnet sphere, where you fire it and leave it to go to other weapons while it chews things up
man i used to use piranha gun in 1.2 and even back then it performed marvelously
I love the Pirahna Gun. I feel like it perfectly fits into every playstyle as a backup weapon, and it really shines when you use it alongside Summoning loadouts, because then you can focus down DPS on big targets while your little buddies take out the trash.
you can create a jungle biome with no jungle enemies, with just a simple grid of jungle grass safely contained. no need for lihzard bricks.
Takes me back I had this weapon when I played the game on the 3ds
I liked the piranha gun and its really good with ranger accessories and armour and doesnt perform that well without it . But its a solid option if you are ever stuck on a boss
And makes the lunatic cultist into one of the most trivial fights
And his minions are never going to summon as the piranha gun homes into the correct cloneand all you have to do is to not get too far and go in circles around the boss
tip: as of 1.4, use hive blocks instead of lihzahrd blocks! all hail the hive wand!
I remember randomly obtaining the jungle key and just ignored it until I remembered I had it and decided to give it a try against golem and my god was I completely blown away
I’ll have to try this weapon out in my next ranger playthrough. It looks insane for solar eclipse and the moon events.
In my first playthrough (1.2 mobile), I used the Piranha Gun and the Rainbow Gun together to absolutely destroy Golem. This was before it shot 3, it used to shoot 1 piranha.
I’ve always loved the piranha gun in ps3 so now that I have new ps4 I’m pretty excited to get it again especially now that it’s been buffed

I really wish it did summon damage, it would make sense and it might make summoner a bit more playable
I never realised the piranhas seek out a new target upon killing their original one. I never used it since the single target dps didn't seem that good (back when it shot only one fish), and I never even bothered trying it in crowd control. I guess that's what happens when you never update first impressions! Already have a Ranger on their way to getting this so it will be interesting to see in action!
in my first playtrough(which was in 1.3.5,mobile) i got the jungle key without grinding for it,i used it a lot i really liked it it was really good,just hit enemy and hold attack and everything dies untill post golem

Starting to love this weapon. First i use this weapon it's like "bruh, this weapon is garbage". But after the buff, this weapon become really good against hordes and it's a best weapon against event
I've had it as a tritary weapon as a way to get damage while running away when I dont have other ranged options
The Piranha Gun went from one of the worst to one of the best biome chest weapons in the game. I love the Piranha Gun, just in concept it's always been a favorite of mine, but it certainly wasn't amazing until now. Something I didn't know until recently is that it counts as a Launcher, which are my favorites!

When I played as a summoner a long time ago, before moon lord was released, this is what I would use while my minions were out to stack a little bit if extra damage, back then the gun was pretty terrible but it made it easy to just focus on dodging, back then it only had one piranha so it's good they've been buffing it
