Although the start of the episode was overwhelmingly sad, I appreciate how many different emotions this one evoked, the excitement of claiming vhagar, the tense and emotional confrontation of the mothers, the satisfaction of rhaenyra getting her belated d, and the relief that laenor at least had a happy ending maybe
And the adrenaline of the kids fighting. Let’s just say that a decade from now… Scores will be settled.
i got satisfaction for Alicent getting a stab in ngl, regardless of what you think of her from a motherly POV she needed that lol.

Fantastic ending to the episode. Rarely do you ever actually get to see the happy twist showing the characters cunning and loyalty to one another in contrast to the disloyalty between the families. The way theyre assembling the show to adapt to the book is actually brilliant.
It was also a nice departure from the "bury your gays" trope that GoT has been rather guilty of (to be fair, it kills tons of straight people too, but ALL the LGBT characters have died until now... except Yara Greyjoy... and I guess we don't know what happened to Oliver, but there was still no happy ending for him and Loras). This was actually a really pleasant surprise to see a happy ending for a gay couple, especially since it's a change from the book as far as I'm aware. I'm pretty sure Laenor actually dies in Fire & Blood.

Glad this made it more clear that it was Rhaenyra and Laenor's plan to fake his death, rather than Laenor's boyfriend changing the plan to save Laenor. It's also been a long time since I've felt so happy and relieved watching TV as I did when Laenor pulled his hood off on the boat

@@JodiLosCules Daemon killed the servant to use his corpse in the plan. They were all in on it. They murdered an innocent man to achieve this plan, its just a taste of things to come.
@@JodiLosCules Yes. He killed that guard on purpose. Did you not notice Laenor's lover wearing his boots? Then as he ran towards the boat he's completely barefoot. He took them off & put them on the dead guy to *prove* it was Laenor in the fire. Brilliant plan!
Why do you feel happy? Laenor will never see his family again, lord Velaryon has no heir and he and his wife had to go through the death of their child again after Laena's just passed. Rhaenyra as well as Daemon are cruel and only think about themselves and their power. I can only imagine what would have happened if Laenor did not agree to disappear.

I think the personalities of Rhaenyra and Alicent are flawed where Rhaenyra can be irresponsible and it has ramifications for being a free spirit and reckless. While Alicent is so closed-minded thinking everyone should think and behave like her when the world doesn't work that way. This builds up negative emotions towards others.
I just enjoyed watching my boy Daemon leaning against the wall and watching the fireworks happen. His twin daughters were involved in the little rascals gang fight and he's so cool about it. Didn't even discipline them. It's not like they were the ones scarred or had bloody noses. And Baela got Aemond good from her first swing.
I like how Corlys stood behind Rhaenyra when she got cut. He might be an extremely prideful and ambitious man chasing legacy but he stood behind her knowing damn well Jace and Luke are NOT his biological grandsons. Mad props to House Velaryon. Baela rocks! Wait when she finally rides Moondancer.
If Corlys doesn't stand with Rhaenyra, that's as good as admitting to the world that he believes the boys are bastards and therefore, his son has participated in treasonous acts by not doing his husbandly duties and claiming bastards as sons/heirs to the throne and Driftmark. Then all his ambitions and pride would go down the shitter. Corlys seems like a good family man, more honorable than some, but make no mistake, he has his own games to play.

Daemon ignores his daughters as said by one of his daughters to Laena. And I was wondering why he killed his first wife... now I knw.. just to marry Rhaenyra, coz they cud only marry when their spouse is dead. So may be for no good reason he killed his first wife too.

Daemon’s daughters and Rhaenyra’s sons are so adorable together. Plus that shot of Daemon, Rhaenyra and Corlys together staring a hole through Alicent is brilliant.
That was the most intense episode so far and a roller coast of emotions. Viserys standing up for his grandchildren was astounding.

He didn’t stand up for his own daughter though, he looked so weak in front of the queen. Any strong leader (Daemon, Robb, Tywin, etc…) wouldn’t let their queen question them at all, she would’ve easily been executed if she tried that shit with any of them.
@@feiyu8817 I think he did: he said before all the witnesses that whoever dares doubt the parentage of Rhaenyra's children, they'll have their tongue cut (and he menancily looked toward Alicent, who he knows told their children). Of course, he couldn't do anything more because he would risk to start a was on that right moment. Surely this will worse things after, but at that moment itself, i humbly believe he did right.
I was sketchy about the actor changes but after this episode, I am not worried anymore. They’re absolutely dominating their roles!

I think Milly Alcock was little too good sadly. Emma is doing an amazing job, but I guess the show makers did not expect Milly to be as captivating as actors of the like of Matt Smith.
But I guess she could have not pulled of older Rhaenyra. The actor change was necessary sadly.
Olivia Cooke is amazing as older Alicent, you look at her and you just see bitterness and envy.
@@suumcuique4530 they hired Emma and Olivia before Milly. It wasn’t until months after that they chose Milly for young rhaenrya but yes I agree, fans fell in love with milly much more than expected. Regardless, everyone is doing a fantastic job, even the kids. I just wish more humor was attached to the show

I have a feeling while Viserys liked having companionship and some comfort after Aemma in the form of Alicent..the two never really seemed 'close' or really intimate. Sure, they had sex (which created the 4 Green children), but emotionally, it doesn't seem like they're truly connected. The first episode with Aemma, it's very much implied they're intimate emotionally in addition to physically. No wonder Viserys prefers Rhaenyra too, she looks more and more like Aemma as she grows older.

That speech by Laenor pledging his support to Rhaenyra that she needs a husband was made greater by the ending of the show, implying that Laenor accepted that it wasnt gonna be him and his support was thru leaving

I noticed that Viserys called Alicent Aemma before he went to bed. One part sent me when Daemon laughed when Corlys brother spoke about how Valeryon blood doesn't run thin. I loved how this episode let the tension explode over between the two families! The fight between the kids was very intense! This episode was beautifully done! ❤️
I noticed that too,at first I was like whaaat and if I heard wrong.
Brilliant episode! I know a lot happened within it but I'd just like to take a moment to appreciate the scene where Baela, I believe, reaches for Jace's hand and holds it. After Rhaenyra has a word with Jace and tells him he should be there for Baela and Rhaena who are distraught over the loss of their mother, he expresses that they (he, his brothers and Rhaenyra) should also be consoled too for their loss but of course that isn't permitted for obvious reasons. Even in their own grief, the girls were kind enough to express their silent condolences and empathy to Jace for his own loss. That was a nice touch and very sweet. Laena would be proud of her girls!
Those two girls grow up to be my absolute favorites I’m so glad they race bended them. It’s so smart how they chose this family for that bc it makes sense and they get to look striking and unique and beautiful 🤩 I was sad to lose laena but I got two in return lol.
Ikr, the kids were my favourite in this episode. Also the scene where Corlys ask Luke about the inheritance of Driftmark but Luke denied it saying that everyone (his siblings and cousins) would be dead by that point. It’s so sad that these kids knows their fate but still would have to fight for survival. Baela punching Aemond for her sister was so satisfying and Daemon was so enjoying the drama that involved his daughters cause he knows his and Rhaenyra’s kids were able to harm Otto’s grandchildren 😂 but regardless it’s a sad episode for all the kids (including Alicent’s kids). Aemond giving his opinion of wedding Haelena for duties and coming to give his condolence to Baela and Rhaena but not being able to do so was also a nice touch to his character.

I agree, I adore the children in this and the previous episode. There is a strong sense of children being children. They get along, play pranks on each other, fight, argue and have their own little quirks. They don't give a shxt about who's next in line to be rule the kingdom and who's lord of god knows where.
Re. Aemond, I noticed that too! I felt as though he seemed internally conflicted. It seemed as though he understood their sadness, loss and loneliness because he experiences that a lot in his own life. He definitely wanted to say something but couldn't express himself. I feel as though as a child, Aemond is inherently kind but his conditioning and circumstances have hardened him. His parents are either busy obsessed with the indecent deeds of his sister or severely ill and apathetic towards him, all the while favouring said sister. His brother teases him constantly and his younger sister is a little bit woo woo. He's bright and rather... normal for a child. I feel bad for the poor young guy.

The knife scene is so good I keep replaying it. The lack of music with just the actor’s visceral emotions and the tensions shining through, the sound of the blade being drawn then the kids screaming and the entire spectacle.
It was amazing from start to finish.
That's actually an incredible idea to do this scence first since the cast didn't know each other that great! This show has exceeded my expectations and it's only going to get better 💃🐉
The visible unfamiliarity of the cast in the scene mirrors the reserved behavior at funerals.
Aemond's actor was so set in his character, you can just see who he will become. A brilliant episode.

That was a welcome change from the book. I was 100% expecting him to die because that's what happened according to the book (minus Rhaenyra and Daemon's involvement. Laenor and Qarl got into real fight and Qarl killed him)

This episode was everything I imagined the show to be ! Alicent's anger, the children's battle, the intimacy between D and R, the happy end for Laenor.. I didn't see this coming and I absolutely loved it.
I looooved this episode, it was such a great decision to make it take place during a short amount of time, every scene had it's importance. the fight with the kids and then the reunion was amazing and incredibly tense. Also that Vhagar scene gave me more emotion than any of the dragon scenes from GoT after season 6
My only complaint: Please for the love of god fix the night scenes, it can't be that hard to properly light night scenes, they should know that streaming services struggle a lot on night scenes better than anyone, Jordan peele recently made "Nope" and most productions should take notes on that for how to properly shoot night scenes
You can tell most of the scenes were shoot during the day and in post-production they change the lighting to made it seems it was in night, that's why it looks so dark and jarring, I don't know why they change it.
As already said, those scenes were filmed all during daytime and manipulated in post-production, but i can assure you that that's exactly what the producers wanted, a soothing and mesmerising scene which needs to be watched on a 4K HDR tv, and not on a mobile phone or whatever. They nailed both lighting and color palette!
I have no problem watching it on dolby vision format, but i believe in SDR format the night scene gonna be worse

Daemons giggle hit different
Leonor being set free by Rhaenyra was really sweet and it certainly seemed like a pact was made. This episode drawing the battle lines of what’s to come was stunning. Viserys being fed up and telling everyone to get a grip is the reason why he’s my favourite character, I will miss him.
The moment where Rhaenyra stops the knife mid-air was very intense. The tension combined with great acting... Splendid.

The only thing I didn’t get alicent when she was holding the knife said rhaynera can got away without doing her duty but that is utter bull rhaynera married laenor as her duty still birthed sons as what was expected of her just like alicent. As rhaynera said her and laenor tried to conceive it didn’t work I could understand if they didn’t try at all but they did then rhaynera had to look elsewhere because that was what was expected of her to produce heirs. I like this show because the book is written by a mastero in his point of view so it can be unreliable to what truly happen and history can be very unreliable just depends on who’s telling the story. The show stays within the range of the book but deviates due to point of view and I love that. I understand daemons daughter going off at aemond her mother literally died and he took vhagar on the night of laenea funeral. Glad rhaynera put alicent in her place a bit this episode.

The Aemond Vhagar scene stands out for me in this episode. I loved every minute of it. When the traditional Targaryen Aaaaaaaaaaaahh theme kicked in I lost it 🙌💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The funeral scene where we see laenor in the water as if he didn't want to let his sister go was so sad I cried 😭😭😭😭

I was so worried laenor was going to try to drown himself during laenas funeral in the water :( he does did in the book, so I was worried he'd die in this method on show. So thankful for the happy surprise ending!!
The kids fighting each other was anxiety-inducing

I feel so sad but also excited to see Rhaenyra and Daemon together!!! This show is just wow. Every single episode is truly outstanding. The bestest show I've ever seen!

This was me at the end of the episode: FINALLY... GOD DAMN... FINALLY A FLAWLESS 10/10 EPISODE.
I've given some 9s, some 8s, one 7. But finally a 10! I got no issues with this objectively or otherwise. The last shot that revealed Laenor was alive? Absolute peak. I literally never expected that twist. I read the book years ago but I purposefully didn't re-read to ensure that I stay in the dark about stuff I don't remember. So I don't know if that was what happened. But this was great and its good to finally have a "decent" marriage in the story with Rhaenyra and Daemon.

Wish I could share the same sentiment. As someone who’s been loving it so far, I found this episode to fall far in quality, predominantly through direction. Dark throughout and the fight between the kids was executed poorly. CGI was off with Aemond as he approached Vhagar. Aemonds attempt to secure Vhagar was like a scene from Harry potter 😂😂
A larger issue I’ve been concerned about which is coming into fruition more with each episode; the show runners are really not painting both parties as grey like in the books, the greens so far are clearly intended as the villains

Yea I also thought it was too dark but the kids fighting being poorly executed seemed to be on purpose to show how inexperienced and brutal kids can be.
@@rob4926 I think that's there way you're reading it but lots of my friends think that they're clearing painting the blacks as the villians. i think it's a more emotional story than the books so you don't realise people see it differently than you

I do hope that it's revealed that Rhaenys and Corlys where let into the plan, bc seeing Rhaenys breakdown was just heartbreaking.

@@anwynoakenshield Nah, they've done a lot of dragon scenes in the daylight. It's more because I think either Sapochnik or the DP he works with, Fabian Wagner, likes to do realistic lighting. And the scene was very realistically lit for what it would look like at night during a full moon, assuming you had a good enough camera with low light performance to shoot it. In reality, it's done with day-for-night on the live-action footage, and then graded down with the CG environment to match. If you don't grade the live-action footage down enough, then it looks too obvious that it's daytime. It has to look very dim to read as moonlight, and you can't light the actors faces with any lights that would be powerful enought overpower the sun, so anything that isn't directly highlighted by the sun just falls off into murky darkness. The scene with Rhaenyra and Daemon walking on the beach was a perfect example of this. If I had to guess, I'd assume that stylistically, Sapochnik liked this because this scene was a thematically "dark" one in which Rhaenyra and Daemon are descending into further "darkness" together, etc... and the darkness of the lighting matches that. Which, sure.. but... actually shooting at night and lighting in a way you can control better can let you achieve a dark look that actually still highlights the actors in clearly visible ways. But with the advent of digital photography that can be shot in flat dynamic range to get a filmic exposure and then graded later to add contrast... I think it's become very common for a lot of DOPs to fall into the habit of just using natural light, because digital makes it easy to just expose everything evenly. Film required more work to get a proper exposure in most environments and that led to a lot of creativity in how you'd light a scene. But now, so many filmmakers have just fallen into shooting with available light or flat light to get an easy exposure and then add some contrast and cool stuff with color (mostly teal and orange, or just mostly desaturated in a lot of stuff because too colorful looks digital and dropping the saturation is an easy way to make digital look more filmic).
I also wonder what kind of calibration professional color grading studios are using on their monitors. It seems like because they have the best of the best equipment and are looking at it in ideal settings... the practice of thinking about the worst case scenario for viewing conditions has fallen out of favor in professional environments. They're too used to looking at everything on nice, perfectly brightly calibrated expensive screens, most likely looking at it in HDR, in the raw uncompressed file quality. This can be less of a problem in the world of movies, when you're releasing in cinemas with properly calibrated systems and all that... but in the world of television, you kinda have to think about what's it gonna look like to somebody watching it on a 20 inch tv that's ten feet away in their living room as the setting sun is shining in the window. It used to be that keeping prominent bright highlights in the frame via bright hard backlighting in dark scenes would make them still read on any display. But the trend has generally gone towards keeping things more and more dimly graded and not exposing too brightly, and using very flat lighting with not a lot of natural contrast to it... since like... 2010, I feel like. Sometime around Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it was just like "Let's make night scenes actually look like night, even if we can't see what the hell's going on!"

Amazing episode, especially the Valyrian wedding at the end and knowing its from their line that Dany, Jon and all the rest come. Whats with the lighting though? I can understand it in an episode titled The Long Night, but I could barely see Daemon and Rhaenyra on the beach or Aemond approaching Vhagar
