He's the best living pianist. I've seen him many times since he was a teenager, and even at his worst, he's a thrilling interpreter. At his best he's transcendental.
I enjoyed@@stephenarnold3015 definitely some superior aspects to it. Listening to this one a couple years later I hear that Kissin here is sloppy in many places. Nails it in a few sections, though I'd probably not stand by my initial statement of it being the gold standard haha
I was lucky to experience him live in Copenhagen some years ago where he performed all of Chopin's preludes. Most amazing classical concert I have ever been to.
I've searched for this specifically because this is the piece that Brahms plays on the only existing recording of himself playing - it's an old phonograph from 1889, hardly recognisable but you can actually hear Brahms play this exact piece. And also, alone with his 2 hands.
GREAT PIANIST TECHNIQUE, EXPRESSION, CLARITY THE COMPLETE PACKAGE IN EVERY LEVEL THANK YOU FOR GOD GIVEN TALENT.THANK YOU kissin for sharing this to the world.
This is indeed an incredible rendition of a very hackneyed piece by Brahms that many great musicians neglect it. This rendition reveals the huge musical mind hear and mind or Yevgeny.
@@PieInTheSky9 Yes, the piece looks extremely hard but is incredibly pianistic and just fits under your hands if you actually practice scales, arpeggios and octaves. Another example of a piece like this would be Liszt's Rigoletto paraphrase
I have literally grown up with this most invaluable treasure of this recorded concert from 1998 in Tokyo here onTH-cam. I can not express how truly thankful I am that we have TH-cam or technology in general just because of this concert of when he did the Chopin Préludes(my most personally revered work of Chopin), the Liszt in the second half, and then a wad of thee most utterly astonishing encores following of Brahms and Liszt.....what a gargantuan achievement. This very concert itself, despite the not so great audio quality, the young master's tone quality and blinding sheen of a brilliance still pierces through with every note he played......not to mention the character, tone colours, and thee most astonishing quality of a timbre of the choice model Kissin uses here(I have always wondered if he carried around his own piano? Is this his own piano?). It is seriously one of thee most flawless, prime level, ear pleasing set of keys I have ever heard on a recording audio or visual. The very thought I just realized last night that from his 1984 live concert of Chopin's first concerto when he was only just 13 years old, this was only....ONLY 14 years later. His development into the young astute and prudent man here when he was 27 at this concert is truly....truly terrifying, he was 27 here. I am turning 28 next month. Very piercing to me! And for many years I always would look back at this concert on TH-cam for such inspiration. Lord willing, I will not give up and keep on keeping on despite all the chaos in the world at this time! Thank you....thank you whoever you are, over and over for uploading this concert how many years ago! This spectacle was and is one of the most important, meaningful, impressive, and extraordinary ever recorded. We are blessed! Matthew.
Don't know whether Evgeni Kissin always took his own piano with him for concerts. But Vladimir Horowitz definitely did it. He brought always his own Steinway and piano tuner with him. To all countries where ever he gave concerts
Saw Kissin in Bergen last month. He played one of Liszt's dances as an encore. The instrument couldn't handle him, and a string in the upper register broke. He pulled out the broken string and played another encore. Paganini turns over in his grave... to applaud.
He is truly amazing and magnificent. His clarity and technical ability is unsurpassable. However if you really want to know how Hungarian music should be interpreted, listen to a Hungarian pianist, such as Georges Cziffra. (1921-1994). You will hear the difference.
What does the expression of speed like a bullet lend to this whole song? . I can only thunk its only relatable to a human that had experienced the speed of an autonomic flight or fight response. It’s like ballet on speed. Who could dance to this fast enough they’d look like their having a seizure.
There is an interesting disconnect between the fire and passion of Kissin's playing, and his icey, distant demeanor with his audience. It's no wonder his admirers find him enigmatic.
@ahahaha62 : To the EIGHT ignorant people (the first commentator and the seven approvers). It was Brahms who wrote the two-handed version of Hungarian Dance Number 1 not Doctor Kissinger that plays a four-handed version with two hands.
@inazuma3gou : You miissed one out and that was Stokowski the conductor who transcribed works by J S Bach for the orchestra. But the REAL thing about this video is Brahms and the beauty and warmth and bravado that he composed into this HUNGARIAN DANCE.
@Pianoman121968 Search up "imslp hungarian dance no. 1" on google and click on the first link. Look for the solo piano arrangements by Brahms under the "Arrangements and Transcriptions" section.
I think brahms is really difficult to play cause he has a very "firm" and "grand" style (like he was) and evgeny kissin is the one who can adopt this syle with clearness.
@CLASSICAListheWAY My comment was intended as an observation and not a criticism.Kissin's perfunctory demeanour on stage has frequently been commented on. Hell, I'm on his side-all those fawning fans wanting personal contact must be irritating.

素晴らしいですね‼️私も彼が16才で来日したときから、ずっと大好きです🎶🎶❤️
Sokolov? Pletnev? Volodos? Etc. Not one "best" pianist.
Best I have seen in Paris in 20 years of concerts are Sokolov, Pogorelic, Volodos

it's amazing when two hands can perform a song meant for four hands so flawlessly and effortlessly.
I am obsessed with this piece.
And same here. My covid 19 lockdown soundtrack.
@@nathanm169 what year are you studying? :0 i love this pieces and would love to learn them as well
Yeah! It's perfect. Brahms' perfectionist taste paid off.
I feel the same.
@@nathanm169 how's that going? I'm a novice so one measure takes me days to learn properly
Nobody gives this piece the energy and driving rhythm that Kissin does,
There are absolutely no words to describe how amazing this performance is!
Happy 35th Anniversary Link!
Brahms come back and listen to evgeny kissin
The gold standard of performance for this piece. Absolutely amazing. How he nails 1:14 is beyond me
Have you heard Katchen's performance?

Magnificent!! I am not only enchanted by Brahms and his creation but also by the performance of Kissin... Halleluja...
Such a beautiful piece
It takes so much energy to play these big pieces. I'm exhausted just watching him...

Awesome video.
Awesome performance, when I was a boy I saw Gilels play this as an encore but I believe Kissin is even more electric.
I agree👍He is miracle and great‼️
absolute genius

best interpretation of this piece ever, by Evgeny Kissin, as usual.
Excellent. I play this peice, and I like the tempo and the way that Kissin plays this. Good emotions in his playing.

LOL I just got the sheets and want to play it but after looking at his hands..... damn that's gonna be a hard time xD
