This might be my favorite Chopin concert of all time. The young Kissin had the perfect storm of passion, technique and tenderness to play Chopin better than anyone. His melodic interpretations are so coherent and romantic, with no corniness or schmaltz.
Extreme sensibility to the melody ... amazing technique ... enormous talent, not wasted ... his teacher is/was a fabulous old lady ... his hands seem to have been made for piano playing ... so far unparalleled ... I sense that Chopin is smiling ...
He was 13, his birthday is on October 10th. How can a young boy play Chopin's Scherzo no. 2 and Fantasie with so much expression, poetic sense and advanced technique?! See the video where Karajan's daughter tells that her father had tears in his eyes when he heard Kissin playing that Fantasie.

I remember hearing him in New York in 1990 and 1991, and the encores alone were magical. The influence of his teacher at the time was discussed frequently about those who knew something who knew him, and one has to wonder what an incredible benefit she was for him - to an extent few pianists have ever experienced.
He was working so hard back then, who knows why, but he gives us hope and expectations for where humanity is going to go! That's what music does at its best! (Please support music teachers and musicians in this time. Or just chill out, that's a good beginning of the same).

Evgeny Kissin was already a rock star at 13. What's cool about rock stars is the hair. His is a little wild. But when you can play the piano like this. It doesn't matter. And boy did he become one of the great pianists of our time.👍👍👍👍👍

This concert was recorded live March 27, 1984 when Kissin was 12 (according to him in an interview). The album (on vinyl) was released in1985.
