As someone who would love to start doing this, but cant afford airbrush and all that comes with it.. how would you recommend setting a base colour? Acrylic?

You could do thinned layers of acrylic as a base and build up shading with pastels, I know a lot of people like oil paint too but I've never tried it, blue mountian stable has some good videos on that!
