  • Please join me in this video, Patricia Hayes - From Tragedy to Triumph.
Despite feeling her height and appearance were stifling her ambitions, Patricia Hayes never stopped working. When her personal life crumbled and she found herself a single mother of two children and pregnant with a third, she summoned her bravery and bags of resolve and made a marvelous success of being both an actress and a mother.
The fact that prominent comedians like Arthur Askey, Tony Hancock, Arthur Haynes, Benny Hill, and Frankie Howerd all wanted to work with the petite, affable character actress Patricia Hayes is perhaps the highest praise that can be awarded to her. Patricia Hayes was one of the finest straight actresses in the profession, whether she was playing a whining battleaxe, a smart fashion editor, or a mother doing the washing up in a spoof commercial.
Please join me as I take flowers to remember the life and work of the amazing Patricia Hayes - Patricia is buried at Compton Cemetery also known as Watts Cemetery Chapel - surrounded by beautiful scenery, the chapel at the center of the cemetery is an extraordinary building well worth a visit in itself - it's a mortuary chapel opened in 1898 - and is in the Gothic Revival, Romanesque Revival style. If you'd like to know more about it I'll leave a link here:

That was really lovely because Patricia Hayes deserves to be remembered with fondness and respect. Thank you once again Shar for a well researched and generous tribute. As you say, an excellent character actress is exactly what she was and thank goodness for 'Play for Today' giving her an overdue TV lead role, which she played with distinction. I always bracket Patricia with Irene Handl because they were from the same era, often playing similar types of roles with quite a few of the same comedy actors. My favourite part of hers was on radio in 'The Men from the Ministry' as a militant tea lady, circa 1970. It's a cliche, but we won't see the like of her again.

Patricia Hayes was, like Dandy Nichols, one of those wonderful character actresses that sadly seem to be in short supply these days. I remember her appearances in The Goodies, Hugh and I (with Terry Scott and Hugh Lloyd) and of course Till Death Us Do Part. Surely her best performance had to be Edna? Just my opinion. Another wonderful tribute video. Emotive and educational as always. Although they might not know her name, I'm sure more modern audiences would quickly recognise Patricia from classic films such as a Fish Called Wanda and Willow. Growing up, I mainly remember her from comedy roles on television. When I saw Edna for the first time a few years ago I was absolutely astounded by her acting in that tragic tale. The play didn't pull any punches and many scenes were very uncomfortable to watch. It really shone a light on homelessness, mental health problems and addiction when polite society was largely still trying to sweep those issues under the carpet. Being set in the 1960s, I like to believe we've moved on from those times and are a bit more enlightened now but probably not as much as we think we are.

I dont know why she only got an OBE when the Royals hand out Knighthoods and Damehoods to just about every actress or radio/TV personality or newsreader they see. Maybe because Patricia was working class and white.

Beautiful. Thank you for this. Such a talented lady and such a challenging life. People were far more stoic during my grandparents time. Even more so for Entertainers and especially for those associated with comedy. Nowadays, it seems that little-celebrities exploit their tragedies, either to gain a larger, sympathetic following, or to sell their stories for cash. I am not suggesting that this is wrong, or that the past was better. It just feels exploitative when some mediocre TV personality appears on daytime TV after they have been dropped from a soap. Perfect timing to for a trivial (But somehow life-threatening?) ailment to crop-up.
Fair play to Patricia. She understood that everyone has their own issues to handle. Why burden them with hers, when she can make people smile instead?
Thank you again for a lovely retrospective on the life of a lovely lady.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment and I absolutely agree with you! Patricia had many challenges and it definitely wasn’t a life of all glamour and fun - and yes totally - stars of yesterday went to great lengths to entertain without attempting to burden their fans with their own personal problems or illnesses - was that better? She was always wonderful paired with Benny Hill, some of his funniest stuff is just those two together in sketches. Benny clearly respected her very much, as he let her out of our contract of the show so she could do 'Edna The Inebriate Woman', Patricia later payed him back by making a special guest appearance 9 years later on the show.

It's so lovely to hear about Benny Hill's respect for Patricia, allowing her to pursue 'Edna The Inebriate Woman,' and her return to the show later on. They truly made a memorable duo. xxxx

This woman *Patricia Hayes* was *the original Rambo* .
    In 1971
Patricia Hayes Made the incredible movie *Edna the inebriated woman*
Watch Edna - see the *identical scenes* And identical story and character to *Rambo's first blood* .
both Edna and Rambo traumatized by their past. Both prisoners of their *unpleasant memories*
    *First blood* - amazing film
    But
*Edna* - Just as Good and sad as Rambo first blood.....
Good video. Thank you for sharing.

That's an intriguing comparison! It's fascinating to draw parallels between Patricia Hayes' character in 'Edna' and Rambo in 'First Blood.' Both grappling with their past and haunted by memories, yet portrayed in vastly different contexts. It's a testament to the depth of storytelling and the impact of unforgettable characters. I'm thrilled you enjoyed the video, and thank you for sharing your insights! xxxx

Great video, well done; about someone who just got on with her life and played the cards she was dealt with, to great effect and success. (OBE 👍)
Playing Ginger in Richmal Crompton's 'Just William' series of books, brought back to me, my own school dayze (sic) as I'm profoundly Dyslexic, who after years of frustration & tears, discovered 'reading' by following the series end to end. Trouble maker or not, William Brown was my boyhood hero. 🥴👌
When you mentioned the movie 'A Fish Called Wanda' I wracked my brains, which character Patricia Hayes played? And was delighted to remember the unfortunate 'Mrs Croady' and her (3) Yorkies, who were picked off one by one in the movie (sorry about the Yorkies 😪)

Peter O"Toole walking up to the station with a friend and he waved at me but he had red hair and was clad in a mac type trench coat so it didn't quite sink in for a bit until I realsed that he wasn't blond (Lawrence) ( or dark Becket) , Charles Hawtrey which I've already mentioned previously, Patricia who I also saw looking in a window shop front. Just like Lulu, Patricia was so small, but so recognisable. Where I worked in Wimbledon Village there was Ronnie Corbett, Michael Aspel and June Whitfield who was such a lady as was Marion Ryan who brought the most beautiful baby girl in a pram into our shop. The father was Harold Davidson and our shop supplied furnishings to her and her twins, the Ryan boys, sons by a previous relationship and lastly, but never least the great and totally unforgettable Olly Reed who was ever present in Wimbledon Village at the time. He was wonderful, a total legend, larger than life and bought too many people drinks in all of those pubs. Sorely missed and will forever be remembered for the luminous person he was. Last of the hell raisers Olly. Never to be forgotten ❤

@beverly9 Hi, I am not sure where that Church is. There is a Holy Trinity Church at 234 The Broadway but not familiar with the West Hill one. My favourite is where I got married. St Mary's Merton. Emma Hamilton and Nelsons' Church, apparently. It's by far the most most beautiful Church in Wimbledon for me, and it has an ancient arch from the now vanished Merton Abbey where Thomas a Becket was schooled.

Arthur Askey, Benny Hill - they were both great supports to the comedians of the day as well as fabulous actresses on their own merit ❤❤❤

What a great actress, it was great to see her back on our screens late on in her acting career when she came back in ‘In Sickness And In Health’ with her on screen sister Irene Handl and what a brilliant part they both played. I loved the way she was besotted with Alf 😂 Lovely story thank you for uploading 🌹😊 Quinny

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Thank You so much for this and I enjoy your method of comprehensively giving the background to the people that you feature.:)
One very common and slightly, sad, recurrence is how most of the graves of these famous people are neglected with, barely, visible headstones and no flowers, and yet she had 3 children and died "only" 25 years ago. It's a regular theme, whatever Grave that you see. I compare it to my beloved Mum who died 27 years ago. Akk these children od the famous can't live so far away.

How sad it is to lose people like Patricia Hayes. I loved her as Mrs Cravat on Hancocks half hour.
