I've had several chihuahus over a 25 yr period, and not one has been an all day barker. They all loved everyone during the day, but if they saw strangers at night outside, then they barked. Great little alarms.

      We had 2 min pins.
      They both barked like crazy.
The only thing i didn't like about my babies, in every other way they were perfect.
My chihuahua rarely barks, he's 1 now.
I can't express how i felt when someone told me your dog is so quiet. It was a first over 30 years of min pins.
I high fived my husband when we got home.
I definitely didn't want him to be a barker.
I was unfortunately but lucky because we had dogs next door that barked alot.
When we got Nino,i used it to our advantage.
Whenever they barked i would not not look at him and say those bad dogs.
I don't like it with a tone and i would slap the table.
Then i told him he was a good dog not bsrking in the house.
He learned it quickly, he knew he was a dog not just a good boy.
We talk him to look and listen, when he hears something, we just say listen.
      Someone walking by just look.
Then we confirm it's nothing to worry about.
We also taught him to use the litter box.

So my dad recently brought home a 3yr old chihuahua (Taco) who’s elderly owner meant well but kept him on a leash in the house & wanted Taco to have a better life. My dad very much wanted
a doggy but for whatever reason Taco has “imprinted” on
*ME!* .. ps i did NOT want a new pet - my 21yr old kitty Mary had just recently passed away. It’s actually pretty funny that at first, i truly thought that i had a _CHOICE!_ lol meanwhile right now Taco is lying beside me with his tiny head shoved under my knee! .. _ANYWAY_ sorry i only meant to agree with you except that Taco reminds me more of a toddler - like when i realize that he has slipped away but i’m not hearing _any_ noise - inevitability he
      has gotten into something he
knows he shouldn’t & doesn’t want me to know! i’ve never had children _or_ a chihuahua (i was a cat person) & one thing about chihuahuas that i am *SURE* of now is that this doggy that God created is the smartest funniest most loyal loving & adorable 5lb creature that i have ever met! i _DO_ feel bad for my dad though😢 .. we’re thinking about a playmate for Taco!😬 .. sorry again, guess i just felt the need to brag about my new best friend! Thanks much for reading! 🤟🏼

Practice, practice, practice!! That's all it is. Train them to do tricks, play with them, exercise them! I just adopted two Chi puppies and they love playing with me and listening to my commands already! I do leave them to play on their own, but I spend around 3-5 hours a day playing with them and teaching them. High energy pups, they are! But it will pay off in the end, I know it will. I also have two cats, very well behaved, and I used the same technique on them in the beginning. Good luck! And keep training, and have a plan for your training sessions!

@@yourlocaldailyshitpost6328 you’re so right! Before i had a dog, i still watched shows about training them. Pretty much all those programs started with having treat rewards prepared for when the dog complies. So i’m a new chihuahua owner (3yr old Taco) & know NOTHING
about any other dogs but i do know that Taco has NEVER required a treat to perform any task. Unless you consider “yayyy! Good boy! You’re so smart!” & some (very gentle or he flies across the room) butt pats a treat? He is always bursting with pride any time that he’s complimented! lol now that i’m thinking about it, if i DID offer Taco a treat (esp during his beloved FETCH) i am positive that he’d *STOP* the game just briefly - to trot off & bury (hide) his new treasure! He’s quite thrifty that way. … omG i ❤️ this tiny maniac wayy too much!

If you smother it and treat it like a baby they hate it and bite at you to back off. Treat your dog like a dog, respect their space..and it will be calm and come to you. Schedule is important, walking and outside time, & pup will be sleepy and happy ❤

I was gifted my chi when he was 12wks old, during the lockdown. He had not been fully vaccinated and I was advised not to take him out until he had had them. Because of the lockdown, I had great difficulty registering him with a vet (all closed or not taking new clients) and therefore he was not socialised as a young pup. He is great with visitors, wonderful around my grandchildren but barks at people and other dogs when out for walks. This is one of the best videos I've seen on the subject. I'm looking forward to putting it into practice.

I have 2 chihuahuas. The little one 5lbs only barks to get his way because he owns the house and we just visit. The other is 13 pounds and amazing. He only barks when someone steps foot on my property. I get emails when I get a delivery but Alfie barks like an alarm snooze until I get up and look outside. He’s always spot on and anytime I have doubted him he has proven me wrong. Also he is the total lover of the 2 giving kisses and hugs!

Wow, really one of the best videos out there for excessive barking!!! As good as a private lesson! It's longer than many others but so much more complete and I will watch it many times and apply this to my terribly anxious maltese... So so lovely little angel at home in the quiet countryside but a real barking anxious coward (not so much agression as severe anxious meltdowns just like the autistic children I know and I'm not saying this to be mean) if we try to do a pic nic in a park, city walk or go to a beach. I'm the 5th owner... Even her favorite food dosn't work when she barks at people and other dogs in a public space. Usually, at home, she goes crazy for food and I can do basic commands and basic agility with her in my yard without problems. She has a ton of exercise and stimulation. Sadly, I'm afraid that her public anxiety fits will prevent me from being able to do canine sports group lessons. We are quite a show in public and I'm so ashamed to disturb everyone when we go somewhere. I will try again the e collar at the lesser levels IF the positive way doesn't work and then ask her to stay or sit. I even have anti anxiety pills if needed but I don't use them so far as I don't want to use them as plasters without correcting the real issue. It's a challenge as difficult as winning the olympics for her (and me as the teacher of such an anxious canine kid!) but your nice video gave me hope to try again in, hopefully, a better way with more ideas and tools... Thank you very much!!!

My Chihuahua NEVER BARKED UNNECESSARILY AND SHE LIVED 17 YEARS!!!!!
Chihuahuas are always alert to sounds you don't hear.
They also are subject to being cold. Make a sweater from a child's sock and tyour baby will feel warm and loved.
Pay affectionate attention to your pet.
My baby didn't even bark to go out. She just quietly stood at the door knowing I'd notice and open the door to let her out.
She was brilliant and even, on her own, organized her toys the way SHE WANTED THEM. I never re-arranged her toys. She had her pride which I respected.
Allow your pet to have her/his own space. Don't dominate them into being a human!
And don't follow this you tube guy.
He's a salesman, otherwise he would know to never leash a Chihuahua around the throat. Always use a properly fitted, light weight harness.
Your Chihuahua will give its life to protect you. Give them your life to keeping them safe and allowing them to feel they are protecting you, and be sure your baby FEELS THOROUGHLY LOVED.

Warning: Prsnl story here. I bought one of those collars to help get my chi to stop barking, and running after wild animals and orther large pets that would hurt him, or that aren’t his 😅I live in the country. Anyway, about my third time using the collar, it somehow got nudged to 12 instead of 1. When I pushed it, (he was on the other side of the house, by the time we got together little feller was shaking so badly, and continued to shake for more than an hour😢)I still cry when I think of this. 😢😢😢 (tears in my eyes right now!) my puppers, when he’s hurt or sick, comes to me, huddles under my feet. He’s so pitiful at times like this! LET ME MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR: I THREW THAT THING IN THE CREEK!!! I will NEVER use something like that again. 😢

This is exactly what I thought was goin on w one of my Chihuahuas. I have 2 males. They were litter mates. One is well behaved & stays close to me. The other is a melancholy dog. I’ve seen this in him since he was about 1 & 1/2 years old. I’m home w them every day & I’ve watched how he’s grown. He gets bored & frustrated. The problem is about the same time is when I fell & tore my rotator cuff & bicep tendon. Because of Covid it was 2.5 years before I finally had surgery & the first surgery failed & it was another 6 months before the complete shoulder replacement and 7 months of not being able to use my arm. So 3 years later & melancholy Chihuahua is bored & frustrated. I can see this but don’t know what to do to help him. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m visiting family in another state & his barking is driving us crazy which led me to this video. ❤❤❤

We do dog walking daily but perhaps I need to do more and not think I've done my bit once we've been out. I'll definitely try the method you suggested. She's a smart little lady so with the right method in place and heaps of patience I'm praying this will work. As a puppy she soon learned the quicker she had a wee or a poo the quicker we come inside lol. I need to be consistent with her but I'm confident this is the answer. Fingers crossed 🤞

Positive only is great when it works and yes there are people who will simply use aversive tools when they're not needed qnd often use them in a way that is bad, but that doesn't mean they should never be used regardless of the situation

I love your approach...I have just taken on one of my mums young chihuahuas as she was an exessive barker... Mum got the Two puppies as her husband had just died and she did her best but it was just too much for her... After only 3 months of everything you have described she is almost a new girl... My next thing to work on is her chasing my nervous cat... And that issue I'm tearing my hair out over... So I'm going to scroll through your videos to see if that is a topic you've covered....

    • @sharonwhiteley6510
      @sharonwhiteley6510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We have used a gentle leader with no problem. Never use a sharp itemed collar on these little lions. They may see themselves as pit bulls, but NO dog should wear a collar that can injure the throat or trachea. You may have trouble finding a gentle leader small enough depending on your furry family member. We don't use collars on any of our chihuahuas. We prefer what we call their vests to ensure every walk is safe and if they would pull (rarely) there's no possibility of even a slight injury. A collar can cause smaller dogs to cough even when not walking. We rescued a 2 yo that we were worried about kennel cough. Come to find out he had worn a collar constantly. When rescued, he hadn't worn it for 6 weeks but the impression still present. These little but mighty lions steal your heart quickly. We have been married 48 years. The longest time without a chihuahua was 7 months. Our 17 yo passed away in Germany and we knew we'd be leaving soon. As soon as we got settled in the States, our hunt was on. Fortunately only took about 3 months. We found "Bear" and was blessed for 16 years. Eventually after another military move found a little female who ruled. After another move we rescued a pit bull. Yes, the pit bull was dominated by the little lions. Even though we are definitely dog lovers, chihuahuas are our favorite. We would take another pit bull though. Ours was loving loyal and never met anyone not deserving a kiss.
Please remember to spay/neuter your furry family member. Also ensure you microchip them. Our current furry family are all chipped.

Our Chihuahua has Tracheal Collapse due to his prior owner using a collar. Our Vet recommended harness only with Chi’s when walking and never use jerking the collar to discipline them.

Water bottle works. look at them say no bark. than if the bark again do not look at them but spray them.
Keep it up for a few days. Than all you need to to is put water spray bottle on table when they bark. They
    will get it .

Now mind you I did not rescue 6 I only rescued 3, once covid hit I could not get my male fixed, and I landed up with 3 more, now I have 5 females one male and yes I was able to get him fixed. SO how do I train all six at the same time?

Easy common sense ways to change problems. Even these the little dynamo chihuahua see themselves as guard dogs. People feel because of their size you don't need to correct them. You create your own monster.
You may own a chihuahua but treat him like a German Shepherd. You may not have to do as much exercise but it's still required.
As owners of multiple chihuahua through the years, each one is unique. Yet, each one needs to know who is the Alpha leader. If not, confusion reigns.

At 13:00 you talk about in extreme cases where the dog may be sent to a shelter or put down for extreme barking, you may need to use a prong collar and give it a quick snap. Please sir, do NOT recommend this technique for a Chihuahua. You can damage their trachea. Tracheal collapse is prevalent in this breed. My Chihuahua has Tracheal collapse from his prior owner using a collar. Please consult with a veterinarian. They will tell you it is recommended to use a harness, rather than a collar on Chihuahuas. You mention that barking can be a death sentence to some chihuahuas but so can a damaged trachea. Very few people will want to adopt a Chihuahua with Tracheal issues. The medical expense is high and they can succumb to it in just a couple years.

Ok what if uv tried & still trying everything to stop your chihuahua from barking ok I love her so so much during the day she’ll bark if the door gets chapped ect & that’s fine the time I have the most problems with my fur baby barking is at night she’ll bark at the least sound like a car go past if she hears someone’s voice outside then I actually don’t even know what she barks at cause there’s no noise at all but she barks all night there’s times where I get her to calm down & even start to fall asleep then she jumps up crazy barking again!! If anyone can help me with this I can’t take the headaches aswell as my sanity & I can’t remember the last time I had full nights sleep I’ll need to talk to our vet!!

The same applies to priests- hide the collar, and the dog will often stop barking. I’ve seen this myself, and it was amazing. The dog just didn’t like the thing that was different.

If the postman comes and the dog barks,I think, he is letting you know the postman is there, so I let him know, the postman is here, good, let's get the mail. The dog sees it's not a dangerous situation, then you open the door say hello to the postman, you say hello, the postman says hello, hands you the mail, you say thank you, show the dog the mail, say good-bye, and close the door. No problem. This works in other situations. The dog reacts from your actions. I know this works, because I have used it with my dogs! I have never had an excessive barker.

Used to watch your videos quite a lot but the use of prong collars is simply barbaric and the excuse of the dog could be euthanised if it’s barking doesn’t stop is not true. People get rid of their barking dogs as they simply won’t put in the time and effort to resolve the issues plus dogs do bark. If non stop then you work with the animal as lots of times it’s nerves or anxiety. You blooming electric shocking them when nothing else works is downright disgusting. You try it for a week round your neck!
