Fantastic; thank you so much for posting this! This great remake of the classic Cole Porter song charted at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the Four Seasons. This is one of the somewhat lesser-seen appearances of the group on the show, although I know you show it in one of your "Best of" half hour shows in syndication, and that's where I first saw it when I was a kid. I really like the unusual arrangement of the song. Fabulous group with the great Frankie Valli!

Joe long second best? You people who worship the Beatles. Joe was way better than Paul... and Joe had a machine mangle his left hand in a work accident... for the music of the 60s.... Joe long is the best. Number 1

Just saw this discussion of Joe Long as being the second best left handed bass player. Joe Long told the story of him meeting Paul McCartney and Paul McCartney giving Joe a "left handed compliment" as the second best left handed bass player. Joe got a big kick out of that coming from Sir Paul.

As best I can tell, the lead vocal is live, the band and backup vocals are canned, and there is a live orchestra offstage. An orchestra that absolutely crashes and burns at 3:05. Yikes. I bet Valli and company were not happy about that. And while I like this Cole Porter song, I do not like their cover of it. This is a very old song, but the version the four seasons is the one I like best. Very good to hear the combination of voices and the Rhythm and Lyrics are great.

This performance on the Ed Sullivan show would have been so much better if Tony de Vito’s lead guitar 🎸 & Joe Long’s bass 🎸 had been plugged in!
And it’s a big disappointment that Bob Gaudio’s keyboard 🎹 contribution was nearly non-existent... And the poor drummer’s hands 🙌 were only televised for a couple of seconds!
I thought 💭 Ed never allowed performers to play to a sound track... He really lowered the bar on this, unfortunately (imho).
Otherwise, this would have been spectacular...

@@scdevon Yes, I agree that the lead vocal was live, but the rest of the music could have been a prerecorded track. It’s just a shame that the performance wasn’t 100% live, such as the Beatles’ performances...
And actually, I always thought Ed insisted on totally live performances...

@@williamfox8795maybe by mid 60's Ed Sullivan allowed to do that, for example The Rolling Stones 1969 Gimme Shelter performance is playback
