@@kp8381 I am not sure what u meant but thinking outside the box is trying to find the cause and just not treat a symptoms... is kind of what I'm talking about
Thinking outside the box involves spending time searching for alternative answers and potentially going down a fruitless path and thereby further endangering the patient's life. Furthermore, thinking outside the box means not following usual SOP or long held professional belief about how a certain ailment is usually approached. It's all well and good if the patient survives or even thrives under the unusual treatment plan. But what if the patient's condition worsens or didn't make it? In our now very litigious society with all these 'no win no fee' law firms not to mention the irreparable reputational damage and lifelong PTSD from having to go through long and ardours litigations, thinking outside the box is simply not an option. This is what he meant. @@kandiceblu1
This allergy must be extremely rare. Poor girl! Her family made "the appointment," so they were heartbroken. This woman's voice is so loving and positive. I'm thrilled that Harlow made it back to being her beautiful self. God bless you for loving her so much ❤
I can't imagine how it feels to see your baby slip away and not being able to do anything. Thank God they found out in time what it was. I hope she lives a long and healthy life.
I have a beloved Maltipoo that was so picky with food he barely got by in being weighed at the vets. We did everything we could think of. Shortly before his last visit I noticed he was eating the cats dried out cat food. The soft one that I did not pick up yet to throw out and it got dried up and he went for it. So I left the cat's food out to dry out and let Charlie eat it when it was old enough. He began putting weight on. I told the vet about it and she said go for it. It has nutrients for him and if he eats it and puts on weight so what if it was made for cats.
Sadly my little angel Chloe wasn’t so lucky. Tried everything I could. I said goodbye to her December 9th of last year. Nine days later I received her ashes. She will share my grave when I pass. I still blame myself.
My gut reaction was parasites or cancer, but it was something way less likely that I would never have guessed. Just because something is rare doesn't mean that it can't happen. A valuable lesson.
My 22 year old chihuahua actually did go through something similar. He’s always had some rolls. After his best friend had cancer he started losing weight rapidly. We chalked it up to him being stressed out. He was also giving up his food first his best friend thinking he could “ fix” him. After my other dog passed away, the stress was gone. He kept losing weight, kept getting sick. He was eating but he was still wasting away. I had watched this video and that was my dog. I switched his food. He’s a dog again.
Amazing how Harlow responded to the vegetarian food instantly. As though she could smell that the food no longer contained it's usual ill-inducing proteins. I'm so happy for this family. ❤
I've noticed several foods that the smell alone can make me want to puke and I just can't eat them, even though when I was a kid I was able to eat them without a problem yet other foods are perfectly fine for me, but I've never had a sensitive stomach and the Doctors think it's either a slight change in recipe or preservative or combination of them that are affecting me, so it's plausible that she can smell the Animal protein in the food and its absence in vegetarian food she was offered.
Yeah that was my thought! It's fascinating that she almost knew if she kept eating the other food it could kill her so she stopped or her body just rejected even craving it. What a story!
Like what some other people said, sometimes food just has a smell that turns your stomach. Happens to me fairly often when i get sick when i smell some of my favorite foods, and i feel like puking. Helps for getting fasting started again but its rough.
I absolutely believe it, I’ve been able to tell when food has my allergens in it even when I can’t consciously taste it… it’s never been wrong once, and dogs have much stronger senses than we do
What an incredibly touching story! Immense gratitude and blessings to Harlow's devoted parents and Dr. Amy's exceptional veterinary team whose timely intervention miraculously saved the life of this precious and beloved girl.
We had a similar problem with our cat. After many months of terrifying weight loss and diarrhea, the vet finally diagnosed her with IBD. The solution was to switch to proteins cats do not usually eat--no more chicken, salmon, etc. Now she is a bit fat and eats herring, mackerel, lamb, and has eaten duck, quail, and venison. Farmina N & D brand dry and wet herring flavors and Weruva lamb & mackerel pouch are her favorites. This video makes me wonder if cats also have allergies to all animal protein.
I don't think she knew. she eventually figured out that something about the food made her feel sick - or maybe her body did for her, like ours do, but it's unlikely she realized it was specifically the meat protein. when she was given the veggie food the smell that was present in everything that made her sick wouldn'tve been there
We had a neighbor who unfortunately got a puppy from a breeder that bred with a sire with really bad genes. The german shepard pup they got gradually developed all kinds of allergies and infections. It was really sad to see a young pup deteroiate so quickly. Unfortunately it ended with her having to put the dog down with only 2 years because she could not eat anything without an alergic reaction anymore. She was on a diet of potatos until they had to put her down. Glad this pup had such a smart team helping her out.
I think it could be caused by the same thing people get from tick bites that causes them to be allergic to animal products. It’s crazy how that works but maybe she was infected with the same germ.
Years ago, my beloved cat was having a terrible time and no one could figure out why. She was bloated, arthritic and obviously in pain. Then a friend happened to mention that she was becoming a distributor for an organic pet food (don't even know if it's still around) and I decided to try it. One of the ingredients that this food didn't have was wheat. I didn't think much about it at the time but as soon as Chakra started eating this food she changed completely - lost bloat, was out of pain and arthritis, began enjoying her life again. She lived the rest of her life a happy cat I miss her to this day.
I can't imagine how helpless they must have felt to see their Harlow like this and to make the call to end her suffering. To not know what is wrong with their pet and to let her go. I am sure Harlow held onto hope for you guys only. I'm glad she is fine, it's nothing less than a miracle to get that call about her condition right before that appointment. Harlow and you deserve all the love. Dr. Amy and her vets team did an amazing job. All thanks to them for working towards detecting Harlow's condition.
@tamsinjm Beat me to it. For everyone else- dogs are carnivore leaning omnivores. Kind of like how humans are omnivores slightly more on the herbivore side. Dogs can digest plant matter and starches actual carnivores (like a cat) cant. Not quite as well as a human, but they are happy to eat veggies. Cook it for better digestion though, although many dogs love raw veggies too. My dogs fav foods are fish, chicken, rice, carrots, broccoli, egg, bread, pasta and cheese.
It is absolutely heartbreaking seeing how insanely skinny she got. Not an ounce of flesh or muscle on her skull and body at the almost-end. Absolute applause for the vet thinking outside the box. So good to see a dog bounce back the way Harlow did. ❤
This is amazing! Thank goodness Dr Amy was able to diagnose the problem and save this beautiful dog! And thanks to the determination, love and patience of Harlow's Mom and Dad in not giving up!
they were about to😭😭 I appreciate that they fought as long as they did though; just long enough. and they obviously spared no expense in their efforts to help her, which is admirable🖤
Oh, precious Harlow. This just proves she was meant to be with your family from the beginning. You were able to afford her all the care and things she needed. I know first hand what it is like to see my pet dying right before my eyes and having no means to help. It is pure anguish. Thank goodness for Dr. Amy! Your story had tears coming from my eyes without me knowing it. Then, they were tears of happiness! Much love to you and Harlow from me and my four dogs in the US 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for loving her through all this!! We gave our dog v'-dog and his tumors shrunk within 4 months!! Think about the planet and the poor tortured animals used for dog food.
What caused the tumors? Does your dog have allergy related tumors? My dog has allergies and a tumor on her neck. Docs trying to find cause. What dog food was that you mentioned? Thx
That is incredible! I have never heard of such a thing and thank heavens your vet was able to figure it out for this beautiful little girl. Congrats and welcome back Harlow 😘😘
What a miracle that Harlow happened to be part of your family and happened to be placed with a vet that was able to think outside of the box so to speak. Thank God she is a thriving, happy and energetic girl! What a blessing🙏😇
So glad you figured out what was causing her so much trouble and that she rebounded with the right diet. I am so happy for her, and for you. It is lovely to see her so healthy.
What a miracle!!! It's so amazing that Dr. Amy thought about the animal protein allergy as a possibility. What a wonderful veterinarian! I'm so happy that your sweet baby is alive and healthy!! Blessings to all of you for not giving up on her. 😊💖🙏
Thank you for not giving up on her, but also willing to make that selfless to decision to end her suffering if necessary. So happy she’s thriving now! That’s what it means to have a pet; you’d do anything for them.
That was the 1st thing I thought of ... I know a similar story and after changing the normal diet into a vegan diet, the dog flourished up. I'm so happy for your baby girl. All the best for you, little pupper ❤🐶🍀❤
Similar to alpha galactose red meat allergies in humans in multiple countries. In humans red meat allergies are caused by tick bites. Maybe there is a similar cause in dogs.
I think it's perfectly possible that allergies can happen due to a genetic mutation and no other external factor. I'm lactose intolerant myself, and, thanks to vegan products, I get to eat a lot of stuff that would usually make me sick, so I'm personally glad that there are people out there working hard and offering tasty and/or balanced plant-based alternatives for humans with different kinds of food intolerance. A lot of people act with harshness and bigotry whenever the "veg" prefix is mentioned, so it really surprises me that a brand would try to make vegetarian dog food. I hope vegetarian brands never get discouraged. They make so many lives better, and this dog could only be saved because some brand decided it was worth the try regardless of all the backlash they'd face
Who knew a dog couldn’t handle animal proteins! Thank God you didn’t give up. Putting an animal down is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. It’s truly gut-wrenching. I’m so glad it turned out well for Harlow! 🐾♥️🐾
Who would have ever thought something like that? You have a veterinarian who really cares. And this story just brought me to tears. I am so glad that Harlow is 100 she's such an amazing dog.❤❤❤
It's actually not very surprising since proteins are the most common food allergens in dogs. Most dogs are allergic to chicken, beef or eggs but the owners don't realize
The moment I saw a pair of Weimaraner’s, I instantly became attached to the story. I also had a pair of Weimaraner‘s, a long hair and a short hair, our poor boy ended up with a rare blood cancer that was almost impossible to cure. It was heartbreaking watching such a happy boy wither away. So glad you were able to find treatment for your dog. And good for you for going through such lengths to make your dog better.
OMG. I’m very happy to have seen this video, I am really going to share it because apart from being interesting, it is very important that we all know this. God bless that Doctor, the torment is over for this Angel ♥️🐕♥️
So happy to see that Harlow made it! As a vegetarian for years, even I can recognize that dogs are for the most part carnivores, but in this case, Harlow thrives through a vegetarian diet. Wishing you years of happiness, Harlow, and kudos to Dr. Amy for saving him. ❤
Dogs have co-evolved with us, they're omnivorous, unlike their ancestors. Most dogs can in fact thrive on a vegetarian diet. I'm glad Harlow got better !
So so glad a solution was found. My dog suffered for years with allergies but the vets couldn't find a solution. Met a wonderful man while stuck at the airport who had the solution, his dog had the same problem. Food had to be high protein and no yeast and carbs. It worked and she spent the rest of her life allergy free. A pet food expert helped find the right food.
I had a similar situation with my basset hound. He got thinner and thinner until he was emaciated with no explanation. Finally solved through diet. But boy was it worrying. Glad your girl survived
My Pit had EPI and was skin and bones like this for over 3 years! He ate and ate and ate and we mixed his food and blended it with chicken and veggies..on 3 meds...still no weight gains. He was always happy though. We just lost him this last Wed. 12/17/23 and it was like a slap in the face! We had no idea. He was 10 degrees under temp and had a tumor on his spleen. I wish to God I would have known about a veggie diet b/c he sure was always itching and scratching too...and he went to the best of the best bougie vet with like 12 Dr.'s and specialists around here. Too late for us now, but I am glad this baby got the help they needed!
Thank goodness for the vet figuring it out before they were going to put her down on the following Monday, God Bless the vet who saved Harlow's life and she got better and better, now she can live a wonderful life ! The Hero is the vet ! Wat to go ,! Congratulations to the vet, family, and Harlow ! Saved just in time ❤❤❤ Harlow enjoy your life to the fullest ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Oh my goodness! I am in tears over this beautiful dog! What a blessing to have such a WONDERFUL vet, and a loving family who did everything they could to help her. I am so moved, I love the stories like this!! GO HARLOWE!!!
Oh thank God your vet figured it out in time! I'm crying tears of joy. 😂 What a moving story. Thank you for sharing. So, so happy for you and your sweet baby girl.🤗🐕
Wow! I never thought dogs can be allergic to animal meat!🤔 Dr Amy is God sent Good Samaritan, an Angel! Thank you for not giving up on this beautiful sweet furry baby! 🙏👍😘🐶❤
This has got to be one of the BEST success stories. Dr. Amy came right on time! It's so admirable to see how much love, care and hope the family invested in that sweet pup. I'm thrilled to see her thriving and healthy. Great work team!!🌞🐾
This video literally saved my Mom's dog, Charlie's life. After he continued to lose weight without any diagnosable reason I remembered this video. We immediately switched him to a vegetarian diet and he gained 7 ounces in one week! Thank you so much for these wonderful videos. They're just as educational as they are enjoyable to watch.
I have an Italian greyhound, so I guess skinny dogs are close to my heart. Her sweet demeanour reminded me so much of my girl. I’m so happy that beautiful dog can be happy and healthy now!❤
AMAZING that this extreme situation with this gorgeous girl Harlow was sorted 👏Sadly, like humans, dogs are developing more allergies to certain foods. Chicken is a big culprit, however the responsible protein in that, is not present in Turkey. Usually results in a bad tummy, skin issues etc. Super glad to see Harlow well 💛💛💛
My cat is allergic to all meat proteins also! He eats prescription hydrolyzed protein food - and he’s always on the edge of chonky now 😅 He is the cuddliest animal I have ever met in my life, we are happy to have him❤
A true miracle, Thanks to a doctor who really cared and kept researching. Do happy you got your dog back. I've learned something new, that some dogs might be allergic to animal protein. Enjoy your beautiful dog.🥰
My in-law’s German Shepherd had a protein allergy, which the vets figured out in one visit. I can’t believe the veterinarian you saw took so much time to figure it out, but I’m glad they finally did. ❤
right? I'm glad they figured it out in the end and in the nick of time but for it to take so long to figure out to the point the dog was on death's door? I mean....or maybe they went to a different vet and it was that vet that figured it out...
My ex MIL has a dog allergic to chicken. It was difficult to diagnose and was difficult to find dog foods without some kind of chicken added. You have to find a vet who is willing to think an animal who is a carnivore by design can not tolerate animal protein. It is against what the common wisdom.
Oh my God, I so so sorry you all went through that, you were so Blessed when the Dr called and told you that she can be saved. I am so so so happy for you all especially your sweetheart dog. 🥰
This brought tears to my eyes, it reminds me of my parents previous dog 😢 He became ill, didn't keep his food inside, everything he ate, came out as quick as it went in. The vet didn't know what was wrong, even a special clinic didn't know. On his last days we gave him all yummy things like nuts and grapes, he loved it só much, even though it came out almost immediately. He was nine years old when my parents had to put him to sleep and seeing this made me sad and happy at the same time. Sad to see a dog became so ill and happy there was a solution and she's now a happy dog again. Makes me give my own (senior) dog an extra cuddle 🥰
What a touching story,I was literally sitting here crying when you made the bucket list,.never heard of this happening and hats off to the great veterinarian team, she looks fabulous I'm so glad she is ok.
Omg what a difference! Thank god for Dr. Amy. Just by our understanding that dogs are decendants of wolves, most of us would never even consider a dog could have an alergy to animal proteins. I had no idea that this was a thing. So happy to see they caught it in time and Harlow is happy again. That said, Im shocked she didnt show symptoms sooner
OMG, I'm crying! So glad your excellent veterinary team figured out that she was suffering from a very rare condition! So nice to see her tail wagging and the light and joy for life in her eyes!
Every story such as this, although heartbreaking, gives hope to thousands of Dog owners struggling with similar situations! The best part is that your fur baby will be ok!!🥰
0:27 Another example why your not always good off at a vet. Ran multiple test, went multiple times to emergency a week and in the END news the dog might have a RARE allergic reaction to animal proteins. A 2016 study by the Biomedical Central Veterinary Research stated that 34% of dogs are reported to have allergies to beef, so not so rare. How much money was spend, how much time and stress have dog and owner been through. The vegetarian diet could have been given at the moment it was clear the dog was losing weight while eating good.
Has that study been peer reviewed by veterinary nutrition scientists? Have the results been duplicated by veterinary nutrition scientists? Dog allergy to corn, wheat and other grains is common. My dog's corn allergy disappeared when I switched her to a grain free diet. The leading cause of red meat allergies in HUMANS is tick bites, in multiple countries, by whichever tick is most common there. Maybe red meat allergies in dogs are caused by tick bites. Ticks cause a multitude of diseases in humans and dogs. It is a good place to start.
Well done to the vet that figured that out. I’m a vet tech, have been for over 30 years, and there are just some vets who think outside the box, and think of causes that others wouldn’t. Well done, that vet should be incredibly proud of herself!
Amazing story. So Incredibly grateful she was able to be saved and restored to good health. Most importantly this video and Harlows story has such potential to spread awareness of an incredibly rare disorder and save other dogs like her. ❤ LOVE THIS!
Having a Dr who thinks outside the box whether that's a veterinarian or a human Dr is just a gift! Thank God for this vet! 😊❤
Don't you wish are regular MDs were like that "to think outside of the box"....
Sadly, I think all the lawsuits that are filed scare so many to think outside the box. Malpractice insurance is outrageous.

My dog can only eat fish, no other proteins or he loses his hair and big bloody sores develop!!
I met someone with a Great Dane with a protein allergy. Her food was like $5.00 a can.
Actually the most common food allergens in dogs are proteins, especially those from dairy, beef, chicken, chicken eggs, soy, or wheat gluten.
I've heard of one other dog, Oliver the One Eyed pug. Coincedently, he lives with vegans. They tried meat for the dog first so no cruelty.
Not as rare as you think.

I guess if humans can be allergic to water, a carnivorous animal can be allergic to animal proteins. Good for the vet for figuring it out.
Dogs are omnivores, not carnivores :)
I believe the likely culprit is the processed kibble itself and the many of artificial ingredients added to it.
That must have been so awful to go through 😢

How astonishing!! Magical transformation ❤ at the last possible moment. Kudos to Vet Amy for sussing it out.
Who knew a dog couldn’t handle animal proteins! Thank God you didn’t give up. Putting an animal down is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. It’s truly gut-wrenching. I’m so glad it turned out well for Harlow! 🐾♥️🐾
Grateful to Dr. Amy for giving this story a happy ending!! 🙏
OML, It's just like she knew before they even gave her the food. I love joyful endings!
Beautiful story
Thank you to the amazing vet who saved this dog's life. Harlow looks wonderful now.💖🐶
Super Kudos to the veterinary team and Harlow's family ❤️🙏🏽
Woof-woof 😃
Wow! What a difference.....so glad the vet found the answer to Harlows suffering. ❤❤❤
That was a really close call and an amazing comeback for Harlow. She looks great now. Hope all keeps going well for her. She's a lovely girl.
A pet food expert helped find the right food.
what a triumphant return! Thanks to everyone who didn't give up on that beautiful dog
I had a similar situation with my basset hound. He got thinner and thinner until he was emaciated with no explanation. Finally solved through diet. But boy was it worrying. Glad your girl survived
Thank god you didn't give up. It must have been so hard seeing this happen
Thank God the issue was figured out just in time. Good for Dr. Amy! 🎉❤
I'm grateful that the vet worked out the problem in time. Her recovery was amazing
Im so glad people share this in case someone is watching who also has a similar issue with their dog.
Thank goodness for the veterinarian further researching Harlow’s condition. Oh geeze, another Dodo video that made me cry tears of joy.
Thank you so much for rescuing her. ❤ May God bless you all. 🙏
That's beautiful! Your vet deserves a 20lb box of chocolates!!!
Thank you for the update, The Dodo..!! I hope all goes well with Harlow.
Thank goodness for Harlow's devoted and loving parents, and bless Dr. Amy for figuring it out just in time… 😭❤️
Oh thank God your vet figured it out in time! I'm crying tears of joy. 😂 What a moving story. Thank you for sharing. So, so happy for you and your sweet baby girl.🤗🐕
Every pet deserves this kind of love and dedication to care.
Thanks to that Dr Amy & her call just in time!! ❤❤❤
So happy that sweet baby girl is healthy & happy!
Wow! I never thought dogs can be allergic to animal meat!🤔 Dr Amy is God sent Good Samaritan, an Angel! Thank you for not giving up on this beautiful sweet furry baby! 🙏👍😘🐶❤
Que maravilla de historia!! Cuanta gente maravillosa que se implica con los animales y nunca se da por vencida 💚😻💜🐶
Thanks for the amazing Vet, dogo mum and the amazing Harlow ❤
Such a beautiful sweet dog 🐶. Thanks to the lady and vet who helped her. The best to the family and sweet girl,🐕🦺❤️
This has got to be one of the BEST success stories. Dr. Amy came right on time! It's so admirable to see how much love, care and hope the family invested in that sweet pup. I'm thrilled to see her thriving and healthy. Great work team!!🌞🐾
Hooray for harlow , and her parents and vets
This video literally saved my Mom's dog, Charlie's life. After he continued to lose weight without any diagnosable reason I remembered this video. We immediately switched him to a vegetarian diet and he gained 7 ounces in one week! Thank you so much for these wonderful videos. They're just as educational as they are enjoyable to watch.
Hello 👋 how are you doing today? Hope you’re having a wonderful day so far 😊❤
Życzę wam szczęśliwego zycia❤😘
I'm not crying! It's just that... Is the dust ok??
Me too, its the dry air I'm sure!😂
I'm not crying either 😢 😭 my eyes are just taking a shower 😅😅😅😅
I'm not crying it was the magic ok 😂😢
Amazing, what lovely owners, and what an amazing vet.
God bless Dr. Amy and SASH for not giving up on figuring out the problem. Now Harlow can live happy and healthy. 😮❤😊
Super glad to see Harlow well 💛💛💛
I never would have thought of that. Cheers to the vet.
What an incredible story! I had tears of joy as well for her. So glad she's healthy again!
My cat is allergic to all meat proteins also! He eats prescription hydrolyzed protein food - and he’s always on the edge of chonky now 😅 He is the cuddliest animal I have ever met in my life, we are happy to have him❤
Hope he lives well

Maybe you were just lucky that one of your vets made a spot on guess?
My ex MIL has a dog allergic to chicken. It was difficult to diagnose and was difficult to find dog foods without some kind of chicken added. You have to find a vet who is willing to think an animal who is a carnivore by design can not tolerate animal protein. It is against what the common wisdom.
Oh my God, I so so sorry you all went through that, you were so Blessed when the Dr called and told you that she can be saved. I am so so so happy for you all especially your sweetheart dog. 🥰
This brought tears to my eyes, it reminds me of my parents previous dog 😢
He became ill, didn't keep his food inside, everything he ate, came out as quick as it went in.
Harlow is sooo lucky to have parents like you!!!
Bless her, what a gorgeous girl! So pleased to see her thriving, thank goodness Dr Amy managed to solve the puzzle!
It is a good place to start.
the biggest THANK YOU to Dr. Amy Lam ❤
This made my 😢, proves why you gotta keep going! Xx
Oh WOW Thank God that Vet Doctor called at the right time and she was saved. Praise God 🙏✨️❤️🔥
Thanks for posting Harlowe's story. This will probably save other pups 💚🐶
Yes, even if not a meat allergy, maybe look into other allergies. I know of a dog allergie to grass.
A hero doctor figured it out! Kudos to this person!! Thank god for competent people (whichever field they're in) ♥
