I played football in college so I’ve seen my fair share of muscle cramps, I mean we had pickle juice on tap on the sidelines. I’m also in my 3rd year of DPT school. I’m wonder if you could shed some light as to why ATC’s stretch people who are cramping and putting tension on a nerve especially as Dr. Brian said, is undergoing immense neuromuscular fatigue. Why not slacken the nerve and inhibit it that way, much like we do with trigger points and excessive nerve excitability. I mean in my mind, nerve flossing, which decreases excitability, would be way better than just cranking on that poor guys leg courtside.

For me when I saw this I wasn’t surprised he would lose the much weight during, since I watch F1 on average drivers lose about 8 pounds during a race. people shouldn’t be worried because paolo is just losing 7 pounds of water weight most likely, which can easily be replenished during and after a game

I suffer from hyperhidrosis so losing a lot of water weight is very easy for me. I've lost in excess of 20lbs in as little as one football practice. I weighed 270lbs at the time so that much water weight wasn't as significant for me as it would be for others. I have to be careful with keeping up with replacing my fluid and electrolyte levels as I have had very bad muscle cramps and once almost had kidney failure from being so dehydrated.

I’m an ultra runner and I am also a heavy sweater. No matter how much sodium or electrolytes I intake, I always just pour out sweat. On my lung runs when it’s in the 60’s out, even with me drinking about a liter of water during a run, I can sometimes lose 7-10 pounds. Majority of that being sweat. However, I retain a lot of water as well… so even though I’ll be dehydrated afterwards, I recover very quickly.

See for me, I sweat twice as much as a normal human normally does, I change clothes twice a day, and I’m heavily involved in sports. So I did my own experiment with one of my basketball games, I weighed 157.4 lbs when leaving for the game, and came back 152.2 lbs, and that’s with 32oz of water during the game. Also I have lots of cramps after games, not during, but most definitely after.

I don’t think anyone has experienced any story like mine where cramping essentially ruined basketball for me. There was a period in time where I was the best basketball player on my team, scoring and shooting the ball without hesitation. However that changed when I got my first cramp.
This cramp for some reason started a trend of me getting cramps during AAU games, ESPECIALLY on days with multiple games. From my calves to my thighs, it would always lock up and cramp and. I listened to what everyone said, eat bananas, drink more water, drink gatorade, etc, NOTHING. I was still a great basketball player, but I was always the person who got a cramp. I knew I would get a cramp going into an AAU tournament. To this day, I still get cramps and even though I don’t play anymore, it haunts me. I never saw a doctor, but it confused me as I was in tip top shape, always working out, but yet I got cramps. I hope one day I discover the “cure” for it as it ruined my hopes and dreams of something bigger in basketball.

im a heavy sweater, i wonder how much sweat weight ive lost during sports practices in the past. im quite lazy now, but when i was in elementary all the way through high school that wasnt really the case. i was lazy fit i guess you could say. i was fat, but played soccer(id call it football but itd be confusing since im from canada) hockey, basketball, and was also a decent sprinter, all at over 200lbs and not of muscle. my biggest downfall in all sports was my endurance as sprinting around with 200+lbs flopping around puts a strain on you, which cased me to sweat alot from the extra heat i generated. so in a 3 hour basketball practice, im really curious with how much sweat i actually lost.

As someone who is a crazy sweater, basically a human slip-n-slide, (from both medication and just naturally) I myself have had MULTIPLE situations where I have lost 9-15 lbs in a week of working out (2-4 hours of working out a day/basketball daily). Ive suffered from dehydration both in highschool and in my adult life. When these events occur I usually force myself to rest for 3ish days to replenish hydration but is this an “okay” thing? It’s been an issue since I was 17 and I’m 26 currently
Edit: I only suffer cramping after 4-6 hours of cardio/basketball

4 year heavyweight Varsity wrestler and heavy sweater here. If u wrestle, u would know that practice is always 110 degrees plus and I would lose 8-9 pounds of sweat every 3-4 hours

I know sugars aren’t always bad and our body needs some BUT I think because most diets already are so overloaded with sugar. Most people without question are eating probably 200%+ sugar per day. I get athletes probably don’t but one bottle of pop or one granola bar and that’s probably 30%-80% of daily sugar needs. I know that a college athlete probably has a bit more regulated diet but having been around D1 athletes in college they don’t regulate it as well as a professional athlete may. Meals are healthier but usually not super fine tuned per athlete and it’s usually up to them to choose heather choices at times and they don’t always. So I’m almost curious if he just ate a meal before these games that it may be something he loves, but does not have the nutrition that he needs to balance his performance. Also I think stuff like Gatorade is legitimately dumb to use during athletic events and practices though. Which is why I’ve said for years I’m legitimately surprised no professional league has gone into a partnership with Smartwater, Esentia, Core, etc. Just because those are all mostly strictly have the electrolytes and nutrition needed without the sugar overload of Gatorade. Also not that Gatorade/Powerade is always bad but I think tossing in what could be 300%+ of the sugar needed for the day with Gatorade during a game or practice is going to have a negative impact. To me that’s like eating a cheeseburger, chunky soup, some heavy pizza, and then going for a run or workout and not thinking it’ll impact you negatively.

He’s American (probably African American) and Italian. I wonder how much genes and diet play into this. Like would a more Italian or Mediterranean diet benefit him.
    If any at all.

Are you aware of osteopathic manipulation treatment, specifically the muscle energy technique? I'm an OMS1 (and have my OMM final practical next week lol) and I'm wondering if that could be used to help with the cramping if it is a result of an overactive muscle spindle reflex. Also, I'm assuming they got the "7 pounds" number by weighing him before and after the game. That would mean a net loss of 7 pounds even with fluid replacement during the game, I just wanted to make that clarification but please correct me if i'm wrong.

I box to stay fit, and after a 1-2 hour boxing session i'd lose 6-8 lbs. Not sure if that is just pure sweat but that's what the scale would tell.

I am sweatier than anyone I have ever met. The looks of shock and horror i get from my fellow gym-goers after 30-60 mins of moderate intensity steady state cardio are pretty impressive. Almost as impressive as soaking thru a hoodie.

This sounds crazy but I guess it makes sense when you see some guys literally streaming down sweat in every closeup shot throughout a game. I’ve never dripped sweat like that, I guess it’s just genetics 🤷‍♂️
