Giannis Antetokounmpo grabbed near his achilles tendon and had to helped off the court in the bucks game vs the Boston Celtics. Is it more than a soleus strain?

Hi Brian as always thanks for making this impossibly fast! I have a question. Is there often some degree of warning before an Achilles tear? Lefkoe mentioned Giannis had had "Achilles tendinitis" in early March. I'm curious why any athlete would take the floor with a condition like that, given the risks. If one does have Achilles soreness, what is a safe amount of time to rest it before returning, to minimize risk of a tear? Thanks again!!!

@@David-iv6jeAdrian Griffin: 30-13

I'm not saying Griffin is a perfect coach but come on now
@@ChrisCuber123Yeah but the main problem was The Bucks Defense under Griffin because although they had a good record they weren’t really performing all that well and under Doc, they tried something new and that is why they started bad and they improved but then they begin to get injuries to their Big 3 in Lillard, Giannis, and Middleton has caused some adversity in these later weeks. I know the Celtics were resting some guys and were missing some guys but the Bucks played extremely well with The Big 3 and They’ve had some good plays with Middleton back, All I’m saying is The Records don’t show the entire story.
This injury just took all the pressure off of Doc. If they fail, all anyone will remember about this season is that Giannis was hurt just before the playoffs when the Bucks finished as a 2nd or 3rd seed. This injury wipes the slate clean. Doc will sleep well tonight.
When I ruptured my Achilles all I did was step out from the free throw line to grab a rebound. Man did that hurt. Only a 45 min surgery but months of rehab. Totally sucks
In rehab for a torn quad, first few days after surgery absolute hell and boredom
@@Brhoward31 My left achillies exploded whilst playing high school football, CIF championship game, playing middle linebacker, running the defense, etc. Had mild soreness for a few days prior to the game, thinking it was just sore from a hard week of practice, thought nothing of it. Was still sore on game day, so I took an Ibuprofen before warm ups, pain was 86'd, good to go. I was in Ray Lewis mode, mean. We're up 10 at half time. We come out, and the first play, I run to tackle the running back on a draw play, three steps in, I thought I was shot by somebody, my left foot hit the ground and immediately collapsed, I knew what just happened, and I was a combination of sad, heated, and confused. The swelling was horrendous, it was black and blue a day later, and to make matters worse, the imaging showed the tendon completely seperated from my foot, torn off the bone. You are correct. In all of the world. Giannis deserves success more than every other human on the planet. You are so right.
Giannis is in the 99.9% percentile of height. At that point it doesn't matter where you came from. The NBA will literally pull guys like that out of villages who have never even seen a basketball and give them everything they need to have the best chance at success in the NBA.

When KD experienced this type of freak injury against the Raps in the finals you'd hardly have known it happened. He was dribbling and just dropped the ball and fell over.
You’re absolutely right! But as soon as it happened I knew immediately what it was. Then they showed it in slow motion and you could see it pop like a rubber band 🤦🏽♂️
KDs injury was very obvious. First off he had a calf injury before he played that game. And there were reports it could’ve been an Achilles injury not a calf injury. Then watching him fall to the floor it was very clearly his Achilles snapping
Kd tore his Achilles this is a calf strain lmao.
Yeah KD went down in the Rockets series and they said It was a calf strain. Giannis doesn’t need to come back at all this season
@@St.souptown They called it calf strain for KD too. He was out from the 2nd round to the finals. Then his Achilles ruptured. This is how Achilles injuries start.

I remember KD had a “minor” leg injury then had Achilles unjury. Hope it’s not the case with Giannis 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wonder if teams are pressuring athletes not to reveal the extent of their injuries and threatening them with consequences if they do. Giannis has been out with "achillies soreness" in the past seasons. For fans who aren't educated in sports medicine they may assume its just cramps from too much exercise.
Usually when you see a sports doc they give some documents on their findings to you. Wonder if the team threatens players not to reveal their injuries or sit out. or maybe they intercept the documents before it can get to the player and asks the doctor to downplay it or lose their contract with the team. In the end the fans will blame the players for "quitting" like they did with KD until they realized it was serious. I remember fans acting like they learned their lessons about assumptions and will never judge a player for sitting out...yet fans are still accusing players of quitting to this day.
@@kylejohns6196pretty sure just my opinion of course, they just wait for the results and making sure before saying something out of emotion and causing unnecessary problems. Worrying solves nothing but making rain into cataclysmic ending event to the planet

when you think about it Achilles was fictional so they should rename it the Giannis tendon after a real Greek legend
Calm down
Nah, they should call it the Stavvy tendon because he puts so much strain on his.
Thanks for the video!
Does a sonogram have any value in diagnosing any of these kinds of injuries? I could imagine them having a sonogram machine in the locker room.
Yes very helpful
Thank you for your video and explanation
I believe you can still differentiate between a soleus vs gastroc injury based on a thorough and directed physical exam. if the pain is very pronounced on ankle motion while the knee is flexed versus when it is extended then you can initially think of a soleus injury.
Great video. Maybe another one on Jackson Goldstone, a downhill mountainbiker and his ACL and MCL injury?
Didn’t he just come back from a hamstring strain? Could they be connected? Maybe over compensating? 🤔
Whole body is connected 🤡
He has had achillies tendonitis for a while and a summer knee surgery. All the microtears and breakdown in the kinetic chain add up

Every time some pro athlete gets hurt here you are Doc. Easyyy money 😅 but hope he heals up soon (his season is likely over. Theyre not making it past 1st round)
Think I'll wait for the official statement from the team Doc, Doc Rivers
His coaching deserves a malpractice suit...
Just curious Brian, why is the calf muscle called the gastrocnemius when "gastro" means "stomach" or "related to the stomach?"
We had an athlete suffer a Plataris Rupture (and yes, ask the surgeon's PA, I called it) and we had him back, full-go, full strength in ~2 weeks. His pain was approx at that musclo-tendinous junction, but deep. Was a fairly narrow area that the athlete themselves had difficulty locating.
i had that rupture. TBH I know they say its a vestigial muscle but I def lost a lot of my two leg explosiveness after that injury. I was back within 2 weeks in terms of ability to run but my ability to jump off that right leg has never been the same since.
Maybe the specific strain they mentioned (Soleus? Solius?) is because it's been a previous or ongoing issue they're aware of?
Seems similar to the KD injury vs the rockets before that Achilles tear
Very insightful

It always starts with the achilles cramp. Hes blessed if it was just a slight pull and that he wasnt in a full sprint like most ppl is when it happens.
Had a friend that ruptured his Achilles two years in a row playing rec volleyball.
Doc the 🐐
Reminds me of the kd calf strain prior to rupturing his achilles
Dr. Sutterer, insofar as you know, would peptides help with this type of injury?
As I thought, your analysis was substantially different from Dr. Shaq. 🤣. Thanks for the breakdown!
Like KD with his calf injury prior to the Achilles snap
“calf”
It can be bone spurs on his heel and solidified tissue sandwiching his Achilles tendon. I had it and operated my Achilles tendon last April.
Tore my Achilles at 26 years old playing ball recreationally. Never fully regained my explosiveness post surgery and rehab. It’s a terrible injury.
are there any physical exam manuvers that can differentiate a gastroc and soleus injury
Is the same injury kD got before tearing his Achilles ???
Yup. Exact same one.
Do you have any good treatment suggestions for a calf MTJ strain/tear?
Everytime he landed he was falling on his rear, this showed me in the first minutes there was no stability in the legs, something was off from his landings most of the game until this, go rewatch it and tell me its normal to not land properly so many times.
I think he was forcing it, and it could be a reaction to the body compensating disconfort in another area.
I tore my Achilles playing ball on a cut didn’t feel a thing thought I could keep playing but someone told me not to get up the way he sitting feels familiar
It's the ubiquitous thousand-yard stare that really worries me.
Greetings from Greece Doc. I hope it doesn't happen the same thing that happened to Durant. The warriors medical stuff said the same about him. that it wasn't a tendon injury and then he raptured it. I am very stressed right now about Giannis. He plays with so much force.. And he will not miss the playoffs no matter where the injury is.
Hopefully this is not too severe. Not contact injuries are scary. Even with best case scenario, soleus injuries can take a lot of time to heal. I have dealt with some of this as a runner and it not a quick heal.
i think i remember giannis having a hamstring before does it perhaps have something to do with the coming bacl to early from a hamstring injury?
You never know with these things. It looked like the KD injury in 2019 but Klay tore his and was running it right after.
Haven’t stopped by and damn doc you aged 😢
As an athlete that has been dealing with calf issues for about 15 years, even if they seem better... they aren't the tissue is never the same. Sometimes a 2 week strain can take 4 weeks. It is just a tricky finicky area.
This dude correctly diagnosed Jalen Brunson's non-serious knee injury, like minutes after he had gone down, in that damn Cleveland game last month. Turned out to be exactly what the doctor here said, so you should be (moderately) relieved if you're a Bucks fan. This doc knows his business
I’d love to see a video about Trevor Story’s injury.
Could you explain to me why teams wouldn't have their players undergo monthly MRIs on their entire body to see earlier evidence of impending issues?
if this is any sort of calf strain, be that soleus, gastroc, or upper achilles, the responsible thing to do would be to bench him for the rest of the season. These are all precursor injuries to achilles rupture. His loading from eccentric position at the point of his injury is particularly concerning
People need to be educated about the soleus. It’s the most important muscles to train to avoid Achilles injuries. People need to also understand that a soleus injury can feel like a snap just like with the Achilles. It happened to me playing soccer when planting to kick a ball. Scared the living crap out me thinking it was an Achilles rupture because of the “snap” feel and immediate pain. Aaron Rodgers mentioned after his Achilles injury that he has his soleus popped a few times in his career.
Can you do a video on why Luka Doncic was bleeding from both knees while playing?
Scary looks like kD before his Achilles injury
Can you do George Earthy's injury? West Ham vs Fulham 04/15/2024. Starts at 84:15
As a HEAT fan here, im really feelings for BUCKS fans here, this is really suck man, keep y'all head up guys...
Yeah, because the fans are the ones that are hurt.
Searched for this video thinking there was no way you had it out, but here I am.
With hands up in the air and saying "Look im not a doctor but if i was i'd say..." would have been the best initial response to the injury😂
NO FUCK NO
Maybe not the Soleus, but you can't rule out the Phineas or the Ferbeas 😅
I didnt watch the game. how was he before this injury?
I have a question. I dislocated my patella 2 days ago, and today the doctor told me that’s a definite mpfl tear. Is it not possible that it was just stretched? Did Mahomes also tear his Mpfl?
bro should make like a summary at the end Cooked or nah km tryna become a doctor

Dr. S is the messenger of death for the NBA
Noncontact is bad. I ruptured both of my Achilles tendons, two years apart on the same volleyball court. Of course I was older than a Giannis, and not in shape like he is…
But it looked like an Achilles tendon injury to me
When I get all my current events from the Doc
So you're saying seated calf raises and standing calf raises, essentially work different muscles?
Yes
At best it's a gastroc and that can take months to heal because those muscles are so dense. I can't remember ever hearing anyone tell me or heard any reports of athletes tearing a soleus.
Doc always on point. Wish you were my doctor.
Thanks as always for the update Doc. Would be interesting to see if it's some sort of strain like they reported how long they make him rehab and sit. I've seen some studies were age and physical performance were found relevant for recovering for soleous strains and Giannis is in the peak performance of his life, so that's a optimistic sign.
Also let's not forget this man literally bent his knee backwards and was up playing a week later, he's literally built differently.
Doc does it matter that he was able to walk on his own from the court and post reval leaving the arena?
I hope make it for the finals 2024

The review is fast asf
He’s the goat bruh
I used to pray for times like this
Can injuries benefit from time spent in a hyperbaric chambers?
He needs to get right and just come back next season… we remember what happened to Kevin Durant after this happened to him and he fucked around and tried to come back in the playoffs… With how they’ve been playing, they probably weren’t getting out of the first or second round anyway
Facts he needs to rest
He needs probably half a season to recover to make sure he doesn't rupture it.
Completely agree, the risk is much greater than the reward. I don’t think the Bucks have a legit shot of winning a ring this year anyway.
I was actually waiting for this video
You have to think bigger...the left hamstring is the previous injury....notice, it is the same leg....the kenimatic chain includes both....the hamstring was not completely healed and did not allow a smooth flow or relationship between all the segments of this movement....Bingo!
Giannis will be back before playoff.
Trust me, you DO NOT want that to happen, especially with Giannis' size and build. You saw what happened to KD in 2019 and he was out from round 2 to the finals when it happened to him. Then his Achilles ruptured. This is not the same as what happened in 2021.
