Run Dual Monitors on Your Macbook with This Dock

  • In this video I share how you can run two monitors on your M1 or M2 Macbook Air or 13 inch Pro.
The device I'm using is the plugable dock with displaylink drivers installed so I can power 2 external 4k monitors.
With Apple potentially dropping the M3 today, we might be in for a treat with dual monitor support, but if not, this device will likely work for that too.
If you want the one I have in the video you can pick that up on Amazon -

    A cheaper alternative - amzn.to/3OZTlFd
If you want to review the entire model lineup, you can do that here - plugable.com

Your first comment with a sub.
Hope your video gets more views as it is a pretty cool solution for those with 2 external monitors.

Hey Justin, any way you can make a video where the sound comes from the monitors not from the laptop please. Thanks

With the dock I have in the video it gives you the option in settings to use "pluggable audio" as the output and that lets you use one of the monitors speakers as your output device.

Can you use "Anker USB C to Dual HDMI Adapter, Compact and Portable USB C Adapter, Supports 4K@60Hz and Dual 4K@30Hz, for MacBook/LenovoYoga/Thinkpad, XPS, and More [macOS only Support SST Mode]" for this. I want to see, is anker hub's duel mode works with macbook air m1 or not!

That would not. Since it’s only SST you’d get monitor mirroring from this device and not two independent screens.
You want to look for a dock or dongle that supports displaylink. Right now one of the cheaper ones on Amazon is around 75 bucks and offers a 10% coupon

Is it possible to connect a USB-C monitor directly to the Mac, and connect the second monitor through the dock? Or must both monitors be connected to the dock? The lag generated by mirroring on the main monitor bothers me, on the 2nd it doesn't bother as much as it is used less

If you're using just the base M1/M2 chip it would pick up one or the other, so you'd have to choose what you prefer more. What sort of lag are you getting? I haven't noticed any by using the dock and running 2 externals

Is it possible to span across two monitors with displaylink? Looking to combine two monitors to get a single larger resolution display

Yeah you can do that by going to system preferences and then to desktop and dock. From there you'll scroll down to Mission Control which is at the bottom and toggle off "displays have separate spaces"
Once you restart or log off and log back in you'll be able to span a window across your displays

As long as your displays are the same size/pixel density you shouldn't have any issues with alignment. Then a bezel free adapter could help with the gap

    Hello Justin,
One question I have was, were you able to put the laptop in clamshell mode, i.e., close the laptop and still be able to use the 2 monitors? If you can, I would love a video since I can not find one. I use a dock similar to yours; I had to download the display link software. So, I feel we have a pretty similar setup.
Would love to hear back from you.
    Sincerely,
    Steven

Hi Steven - If you have the display link software and a display link supported dock, then it should work in clamshell mode. I can show you and link the clip of how it works for me to see if it helps.

Look at the bright side. Now you can run dual monitors on your company supplied trash.

@@JustinMiller_Tech it's just a pain, I want a setup with a kvm so I can swap between my own setup and my Mac but I only want to plug in one cable. Took me 4 ish hours to read about everything and the thing is they won't pay for it since they don't seem it as mandatory.
So it's all my own time and money invested. -_-

KVM setup would be the way to go! I also have a PC and have considered adding and mounting under the desk.@@VSS63

It's a strange move considering their base model intel chips could. And with the displaylink dock, the base chips can 100% do it. I'd have though by now they would have rolled out a software update that gives us that ability, but here we are in 2024.@@VSS63
