    The fact you’re the only person that comes up upon TH-cam searching in 1 go. That’s fantastic. And on-top of that you proceed to keep these upto date yearly. Massive applause handsome gentleman.

    I bought a new M1 MacBook Air and then a dongle to increase connectivity. A few months later the Mac wouldn’t boot up, took it to Apple and thought nothing of answering their questions. Apple returned the laptop in 20 minutes saying the cost of the repair would be more than the purchase price. I was shocked and they calmly explained that I had used a third party USB port device which had damaged the laptop, and that I needed to contact Anker, the adapter manufacturer for resolution. Anker denied the claim, and I have a $1,199 doorstop. My point: DO NOT BE HONEST WITH APPLE AS THEY ARE LOOKING FOR ANY REASON POSSIBLE TO DENY WARRANTY CLAIMS. 20 minutes was enough time to read the ticket, blame the dongle and deny the claim.

    • @actualsavior
      @actualsavior ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ehhh, i see your frustration, but the warranty covers damages based on the use of the device only. When you add a third party device to it, you void the warranty. Its not just apple and any other company would not accept a claim for a damage done by a device not made by that company. Specially since apple does sell their own certified hubs.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@actualsavior - Maybe, but it was an Anker dongle, used on thousands of Mac’s. I used the same dongle on my old MBA and on the MBP that I bought after Apple turned mine into a doorstop. It was NOT the dongle.

    • @Martin-delta
      @Martin-delta ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Erin-Thorwhen did this happen? Apple released a Big Sur update (11.2.2) in 2021 to address this exact issue. It is definitely an apple issue if you ask me.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Martin-delta I bought it in late January 2021, and the issue was Apple was looking for a reason to deny the warranty repair. IMO they used the dongle as a reason for denying the repair. I’m not sure there was a software fix, as it wouldn’t charge or power on at all. I believe the USB C ports failed, and they used the dongle as an excuse to deny the warranty. My point was simply, DO NOT SHARE ALL DETAILS WITH APPLE! They are LOOKING for reasons to deny the warranty.

    • @Martin-delta
      @Martin-delta ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Erin-Thor the update was pushed in feb 2021. It did not reverse damage that was already caused, but it was meant to prevent damage in the future. The update text was: “prevent models from incurring damage when they are connected to
      certain third-party, non-compliant powered USB-C hubs and docks.”
      Sorry that happened to you. :(

    Thanks for the breakdown, as usual very informative. I purchased a Dockteck hub for my M2 MBA because it has HDMI (8K/30Hz), 4 USB 3.0 and, most importantly for my usage, the power passthrough that you mentioned since I also use it with my iPad Mini 6. It doesn't hurt that it was reasonably priced, has metal construction and a nice braided cable.

    Earlier this year I purchased the CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 Element Hub for my Mac Studio. I saw some great TH-cam reviews on the CalDigit; along with it being powered made this an easy purchase. I connect 5 drives (2 USB 3.0 & 3 Thunderbolt) to this hub and I will say that I have had zero issues since doing this.

    Thanks for the great insights and advice. This is a definite pain point and challenge for me as a newer Mac laptop user, so I really appreciate it. While these CalDigit docks look great, it seems they only have display port not HDMI. I have an M1 2020 MacBook Air, and want a dock or hub that has a port for ethernet and at least 1 HDMI port. Why oh why can't Apple ever make anything simple with a wide variety of convenient options, like I'm used to with Windows...sigh.... :o :(

    I have had a really good experience with the UGREEN USB C 10 in 1 dongle. Apart from the 1xHMDI 4K 30hz (which is good enough since I use a 1080p monitor), it has: 1xVGA 1080p 60Hz, 1xRJ45 1000Mbps, 1x3.5mm audio jack, 1xPD 100W USBC Charging port, 1xSD 104Mb/s, 1xTF (MicroSD) 104Mb/s and 3xUSB 3.0 ports for 40€ or 44$ on Aliexpress.
    I have a 2021 Macbook Pro M1 16gb RAM and a heavy user of applications like Photoshop, Lightroom and Final Cut Pro.
    No problems so far and for that price...can't beat it imo.

    Nice review which covers all of the many bases! If you're just looking for something to attach a monitor, LAN, speakers and some other USB-A/C accesories to a MacBook via a single cable, I've found the Anker USB C Docking Station PowerExpand 9-in-1 a great option for the past few years. It's also in that middle range and can be picked up for around £100, so pretty good value for money.

I switch between three computers (Macbook Pro 14", Macbook Pro 15" & Lenovo Windows), Need to plug in: Stream deck, ethernet cable, dongle for Logi & bolt, Dell 39" monitor (using HDMI as USBC isn't working), scanner via USB.. I think that's it. I only have the one monitor, use the laptops in clamshell mode.. Don't move files around but wouldn't mind the ability to read SD card but not necessity. I don't have any speakers plugged in - most of the time I just use headphones. I just want to be able to plug 1 cord in vs everything because I take my laptop with me daily to work and want to easily hook up when I get home. Do I really need a premium hub?

I also needed a PCIe dock to house my 14 year old sound card. I ended up going with Sonnettech for the SE1 for the PCIe card, the Echo 11 Thunderbolt 4 as the main dock and their dual NVMe drive which I boot from when in the studio. Hopefully if my MacBook dies/lost/stolen etc I should just be able to buy a Mac mini and carry on as if nothing happened. Has anyone ever tried booting a Mac mini from a MacBook boot drive?

      Depends on what you're looking for - if you're following the advice in this video, remember to look for what refresh rate the 4K is limited to - in the case of the hub you suggested, that is only 4K@30Hz. Anker is a safe bet but if it were me, I'd make sure it's 4K @ 60Hz. Other than that, I'd just use this mostly as a guide to fid what's going to work for you, no one can make that decision but you!

      Hi Kyle. Cool reviews. The one that you have. The $400 one. Can you explain why that’s the one you chose versus others. Pretend money is no object. Thanks!

    What I've been looking for is a USB hub that will safely power external hard drives like the Seagate 4TB, that is, drives that get their power from the Mac. Or the hub. I've had drives damaged by connecting them to USB hubs in the past. Does one of the drives you've covered fit the bill?

    I own the M2 Pro and have connected two monitors to the hub using HDMI cables. The hub is then connected to my Mac using a Type C cable. However, my Mac detects the two screens as one monitor, so it extends the display from my Mac but mirrors the content on both screens. Interestingly, when using a Windows computer, it functions correctly and extends the display to two separate monitors. Can you recommend a hub that will enable this functionality with my Mac?

    Hi Kyle, thank you for the many helpful videos. I have three external hard drives connect to a MacBook Pro. The drives occasionally randomly eject (which can be very frustrating when working on a file / video located on those drives). They are currently connected via a cheap Certified Data USB C to 3 x USB A connector. I'm wondering if this random ejecting of drives would be solved by a USB Hub - or if it is some sort of iOS issue. Have seen others with similar problems on some forums, but no clear solutions posted. Details: 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro running Monterey 12.6.1, WD MyBook 12 TB ext drive, Seagate 10 TB ext drive, LaCie rugged 1 TB SSD. All drives Journaled HFS+. Thanks!

      My TBI Pro hub seems to eject my external drive on the fly too. I have my monitor, ethernet, iphone USB-2 charger and sometimes camcorer to copy old tapes. I think it might be the amount of power it uses and ejects the hard drive. I will be looking for a new powered hub.

      I also use a Certified Data USB A and found I needed to unplug all drives I wasn't using. Maybe under powered? Anyway, I can run two drives easily now.

    Do all of these work on the M2 MacBook Air? I am looking for a way to display a monitor (not 4k) without reducing the number of USB-C ports as I would need more than one (so a USB-C to HDMI wouldn't work). I looked it up and unless I'm mistaken the Anker 543 and 555 are incompatible with my device. Am I wrong? Sorry for the inconvenience but if someone could help that would be much appreciated.

    The problem I have is not enough usb-c ports. Don’t care about USB A need C. Even Ankers 13-1 don’t provide enough USB-C. I have connected to mine 3 external Hard drives, the other day my Mac-mini shut down two of the drives for drawing to much power. Could I take the Anker and plug a usb c hub into one of the USB-c ports and get around the power issue?

    Just to check I have a Selore docking station and purchased a Dell Monitor USB C. when I plug the USB C in the dock it doesn't work. The monitor only works when I directly connect to my PC (surface). Am I right in thinking that some USB C ports in docks are not for monitors and they just charge for example?

      Selore hub probably needs *DisplayLink* drivers installed on the PC to stream video across it.

    Just wondering: if the MBP original adapter is 98w, but the hub’s PD is only 80w, what will happen is one uses the hub alone to charge the MBP? Will it run out of battery eventually?

    • @austinchen3623
      @austinchen3623 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends on the tasks you’re doing. If you’re doing light tasks, the MBP won’t use as much wattage, so 80w is enough. However, if your doing medium to heavy loads, then the wattage used will get closer to the 98w of the charger, and the 80w PD won’t be sufficient to actually charge the MBP. So it can still be charged using the 80w PD of the hub, just slower or even not when doing medium to heavy loads.
