I absolutely love team 'S. V. Basik'! Teal, your attention to detail is extraordinary! I'm thoroughly impressed and amazed on how you think outside the box!!! I know boat projects and general maintenance is a TEAM effort from all of you so I completely understand that all the work is a team effort. Lin, you have an amazing family and I applaud your efforts on yacht work, maintaining a proper homelife for all and nourishing everyone with your culinary mastery. Maybe sometime you produce an episode in detail on your menu's, I'd surely like to prepare them myself. I tune in regularly for the day to day but the boat projects... I feel as if Teal is my professor as I learn so much from his lessons so thank you for taking the time to do step by step whilst laying parts out for we viewers to see. I know yacht maintenance, general repairs and upgrades are neverending and are a part of boating life so let's just say that I'll be tuning in to 'S.V. Basik' weekly. Thank you all for producing such a great show, and safe journeys to you! Please forgive me if I've misspelled your names. Roland, Amarillo TX
That boat is amazing, I guess it is a custom boat with the Nida-Core construction and the complete structural remodeling you have done and shown on your channel is that of a master craftsman. Your videos are extremely interesting; detailed and professionally produced. It is easy to experience the passion you have to achieve such a lifestyle and I look forward to your adventures and technical insights.
Just a note to say that the design of this catamaran is a Mastermold Featherlight 43 that Teal has customized to their needs. This boat was build on only two molds, one of them being flat and the other the patented Mastermold. This boat was designed and built by Jace Hobbs in the Florida Keys and updated specifications and plans for it are still available. Teal has the contact info for the designer if you are interested.
Suggestion for a future video: I'd be interested in what kitchen tools/appliances you have, and how you keep them off the floor in rough weather. I know, in a previous video, you mentioned the "39 Tupperware containers" you have for dry goods; how do you decide what to bring, and what you'll use too seldom to bother with? Do you make use of "survival" foods, such as instant potatoes, grits, oatmeal, MRE? What are your secrets of provisioning?
What a fabulous winch install !! You will certainly enjoy the extra uuummph of the H-46s !! I hope Emma actually caught some dinner. Love crab. Yummmmmy. :) :) :)
After watching the work put into your boat as a family it is good to see you guys together enjoying your efforts. Heading South in the winter months sounds like very sound ideal. Best to all of you.
Dear s/y Basic Captain and crew,I have question for q/a sesion: Could you make more videos ??? like twice a week half an hour or once a week an hour ???In my opinion ( and probably not only my ) , you have best sailing channel on YT. So please share with us more of your adventure and work. Kind Regards and Fair Winds , from Poland
Watching Teal Linh and Emma is a priority for all that want things done correctly confidently with a smile. Don’t forget Compass the stud!! Hey, get to warmer weather and when is my question?!
Loved how you all got to get cleaned up at the Basik Spa! Linh, you could be wearing a mop on your head and still be lovely! Teal is a very lucky man and Emma is growing up looking just like her Mom! How clever of Teal to drape the guest quarters prior to making it a shop area. It looked liked he was well on his way with his list of projects too. As a child, our family would go crabbing off “Rainbow Pier” in Long Beach,CA. Such fond memories!
It would be nice to see some of the old footage of more rebuild stuff besides what you've already showed. I really like that sort of stuff. Someone asked a question on cabinet tow kicks and why you didn't build your cabinets with them. That would be interesting to know that information. With the sails, you will probably want several different down wind sails for different wind conditions like a close-hauled and broad reach type of spinnaker and possibly two down wind spinnaker's. One for light air and one for heavy air. Installing a spinnaker pole will give you more options and make your sailing experience much safer and smoother.
Well done Teal love your thoughts about keeping ropes tidy with sail bags/pouches, amazed to see other series with lines al over the deckes, so much a safety hazard. Also steps on the mast is a given ,and cleats to hang ropes off.
Teal..you know so much about sailboats and sailing....' Have you had training, self-taught or a TH-cam watcher, like me? '......and Linh you are a wonderful cook( I'm a terrible cook) with the most appetizing dishes ever..... my question to you is....' Where did you learn to cook and do you have an available sister that can cook as well as you? '.....Thank you...
Try a little trick when working on a smooth surface where small parts can get away from you, place a couple of towels around the work piece then the small bits will stop on the towel if dropped.
Last time I talked about going into LaPush,Wa. What I did not tell you is the year was 1992 and the only nav equipment we had was loran, radar, compass , depth sounder, and compass. Those modern tech things were not aboard. We had a good time any way. I sure envy you. By the way GOOD JOB on your projects!
That looks like PE sheet you've used for your backing plates. A good choice because it will bend and take the shape of whatever you bolt it to even if what you're fixing to isn't completely flat. The sheet is indestructible but do you realize it won't stay completely black where ever it's exposed to sunlight. The surface will grey as it oxidizes but that won't affect its integrity. A good job using huge washers on plastic. Most PE fabrication shops will have a heap of sheet off cuts in their recycling bins and if you play your cards right they'll probably give it to you as it's only worth about $1 a kilo to them from the recyclers.
Your Basik crew, your Basik saloon, your Basik cat entertainingly gettin 'er done. Question, have you been surprised by the many obstacles or is this really just a good SV Basik shakedown to test the 'new' crews resolve? Good luck to all.
I love Teal's craftsmanship. No cutting corners, and very professional looking job on the backing plates and risers. Are there future plans to cover the cockpit, or put solar up?
You guys should of had a beauty contest after the hair salon, but the Lady of the crew would of won hands down!! With Emma coming in a close second! Lynn your you always look great and your smile is unforgettable! Great video as always! Nice to see Compass get out and stretch his little legs!
Enjoying all your videos, great craftsmanship on all that you do Teal. Hope while your at the Dock you add high output Lights so you can see what is about to hit you..
Teal and Family enjoy the sailing World and get Compass a small treadmill ( Teal please build one for him) Lin every time you cook I get hungry would your family like a Deck hand ? Can wait to see the colors and Design on the Sail. I hope Emma design something awesome on it. Well take Care and Happy Holidays too all Greg of Ohio
Hi Teal I have been watching all of your shows and would like to say that your boat looks amazing. however I see how you have just instaled your harken winches and take note you put butal tape between the riser and the deck but never put any between the riser and the winch ! I suggest you still put a sealant around the bolts that go through the risers or water will ingress from the bottom of the winch down past the bolts between the risers into the Nida-core all the best Greg
My friend, your boat is very beautiful and it is amazing that you built it with your own hands but in my opinion what you need now is a cover at the command post to be protected from the elements of nature. Greetings from Brazil. Ps: excuse my english.
I asked several videos ago when you were doing install of electrical contactors for the winch below your Nav Station, how you ventilated the hydrogen gas from your lead acid batteries when they are being charged by your installed solar.
Teal.....All your projects just take "MONEY" . Your boat looks great. Always neat as a pin but youz guyz are an exceptionally cohesive family. The girls are a pair of cuties.
Nice work. Do like the thought you put in to your mechanical engineering work with the winch and you have the skills to do any machining work. The best part is how happy you all seem to be enjoying life and this really comes across in your videos. Your production values are high and they are most enjoyable to watch. Thank you.
Nice neat job on those winches, you make it look so easy, just shows how much better it is when you take your time and prepare. Linh is so mean cutting everyone's hair, could have waited till you got to warmer weather. I couldn't handle my hair that short even when living in the tropics.
Awesome, you are starting on the mainsail!! Can't wait to see Basik under full sail! Haha I love your little make-shift work shop Teal!! (Linh doesn't look to happy about it though lol) Nice job on the winches too !! Fair winds and following seas Basik !!!
Question #1; Have you considered changing out your standing rigging for either Dyneema or Spectra rigging instead of using the current stanless wire you have? Question #2; You haven't talked about your standing rigging except for a brief moment when you tested it for stretch. My question is that your standing rigging is very old and weathered and that is cause for concern in my opinion. Could you talk about that? Question #3; Are there any other boats like yours out there and are there any plans available to build one like yours? Question #4; When you previously did some through hull drilling or cutting, you didn't fill the Nauticore with epoxy before installing things like your portholes and such. I was wondering why? Question #5; What are your plans on rigging up a spinnaker and possibly a spinnaker pole as well? Question #6; What are your plans on a deck cover? You have built the most beautiful looking boat that I've ever seen! I absolutely love what you did! It would be nice if you did more videos than one per week.
As a dry lander in south central North Dakota where we need to purchase a fishing license every year how do you handle that when moving between states and countries. Enjoy your videos and your meticulous craftsmanship on the boat.
Basik crew, do you plan to sail further down the West coast this winter. Just love the honesty and look forward to the Q&A next week. Have a great Thanksgiving. Bill Moore in South Carolina
Team Basik, here are my questions: you installed a high tech underwater sonar transducer while on the hard. Have you tested this high tech device? Will it allow you to avoid coral formations in the tropics? Would you pls comment on why you selected this hardware?
Like the video's. Emma sure has grown and has mega energy. Great job on the hair cuts. Capt. still looks like a scratchy sponge= Emma's laughing at that. ha ha.
Can you explain the purpose and proper use of the dagger boards? I’ve never sailed on a cat that used them. Also, is there a way to protect the sail drives without dramatically affecting hull performance? So wonderful to see Basik and her crew making way southbound, Congratulations basik crew! Please be safe.
Question 1: do you have any non-skid on decks or cabin tops. I think I saw you paint (part of) the top quite a number of videos ago. But I never saw you apply non-skid and looking at the videos it looks like you don't have any. I remember vaguely you talking about it in one of the episodes about how you are used to not having any but that you would apply it before cruising. But that was a really long time ago I think. So do you have any, what do you have, or what will you get, or will you go without? I assume you waited for the deck hardware to be in place before applying it so you can pattern around it? Question 2: cockpit hard top? Plans, timelines, designs, ... Question 3: what is still on the TODO-list of modifications and changes we might get to see in the future?
Wonderful video.. I guess the first question has to be; Did Emma catch a crab big enough for dinner? What is your communications solution as far as short and long ranges are concerned? And lastly, Is any crew member a licensed amateur radio operator? Emma is old enough to get one if she's interested. Thanks for bringing us along!
I have too many questions but I will ask SV Basik,?,there’s a meaning behind that name and I’m for one I’m curious. All I can say is, if you ever start up a flotilla going down the West Coast Count me in I’m already hunting for a cat of my own. but Teal, that would mean you need to take the admirals course. “Admiral Teal and Family now boarding”. Got’a 😍. I just thought of another question, is there anything you guys can’t do? Oh I know, maybe you need a soundman🤣. I’m trying anything to be included in that life, you’ll have to excuse me now, I have to go and shovel the driveway.🤟
Have you put together an extensive medical kit for your travels? Have any of you taken any specialized medical training? It would make for an interesting video.
Teal, I admire you for many things. However, on the "pretty" scale when discussing the S/V Basik crew, I regret to inform you that you come in a far distant fourth (especially after Compass' haircut). Be of good cheer, those of us who fail on the "pretty" scale have other things to offer.
A question for the Q & A . Is there a water maker in your plans? I haven't heard talk of one. And what cut and fabric have you chosen for the mainsail?
Yum, fresh crab! Sending wishes that Emma got into a Bunch of the 6" and above so you guys could enjoy them. Hopefully you got a lot of fresh fish too, another Yum! Have said before how much I respect using backer plates, it just makes sense, as it spreads the load, and is so worth it. Didn't realize you had that much work to get the Main in, but glad you're on it. My question would be..where do rough plans have you in 6 months? Destination wise, or directional heading early plans at least. Hope this finds you all well, take care :)
I hope you did manage fresh crab for dinner... I've noticed in your intro that Emma & Lihn both have the same cute grin characteristic gesture... My question is.. was it really Compass that took longest to haircut rather than Teal. Don't worry Teal, 'God is Good, God is Fair, to some he gave Brains... To others...Hair'
Lol, Compass is a model dog.....until you get near his paws. Then he turns into the most ferocious dog you will ever meet. I didn't want him to hurt himself while we were trimming them. It took all three of us to contain him. He has a lot of spirit. I needed a drink after his cut. Lol 🍷🍷🍷
Emma, Last weeks steelhead meal. Went to the market and got some steelhead. I only had one egg and the toast with it. Thanks for the meal info, Great meal. May need to get a loan to afford the fish but it is sure worth the cost. Thanks
Question for next weeks Q&A. What are your plans for a dodger or some sort of helm weather protection? You look pretty exposed while at the helm! Also looking forward to the mainsail install.
I know you always try to do the best work possible. So I freaked out when you substituted machine screws for socket head bolts. The bolt would only have threads near the end of the full length of the screw. The bolt holds its torque better over time. one additional thing. The bolt has an un-threaded shank that serves as a dowel pin resisting shear, which is what a winch is trying to produce. I was wondering how you positioned the body of the winch in relation to the pinion gear. You normally explain things like that. It's something good to tell potential boat workers on your channel. You always do such clean meticulous work. You definitely have high standards.
You need to put proper bolts of the correct length for the two wrenches. You need at least 2 to 3 threads coming out the end of the nut (you want 100% thread capture which includes the nylon on the nut). thread exposure of 1/4 inch would be better and then dress the end with a acorn nut.
Question: will you be going with Squaretop or Pinhead style mainsail? I have heard (but I have no experience) that the Squaretop has tremendous advantages on a multihull, especially on upwind capabilities.
Two Questions: One- What is your fuel consumption at cruising speed for both engines and what's your range under power? Two- Would like to hear about Emma's homeschooling curriculum? Of course the trip itself is a form of schooling but no doubt you are working under some official guidelines as to the rest.
Great video. I can’t help but notice that the boom (and the mast) on this boat look alittle flimsy for such a big boat. On other cats (and monos) it seems the booms are more “heftier”. Alittle worried in a BIG wind you could loose your mast and or boom.
How did you decide on your theme music ? Did Emma get any "keepers"? Can I get a trim at Salon Basik (getting kinds long) ? Now I can order a XXL hoodie and a coffee mug. Thanks for the fun
Are you going to upgrade to a square top mainsail? I have upgraded a few catamarans and with the new batten designs you can bring them down without pulling battens. I always enjoy your videos. Thank you for the time and effort you take to provide us with these weekly updates.
You mentioned compass hasn’t been on land for a while. Curious to know what he does for the bathroom when you’re unable to get to land. As a pet/boat owner I’m curious because I’ve usually got to find land for my little guy.
As usual another great video. I noticed in one of your videos while updating electronics that you added AIS. Do you run AIS out very much ? It would be interesting to track you from time to time with some of the online AIS sites. Thanks for the videos.
Teal I have some concern about the stove bolts that you used in place of hex bolts which are much stronger ! you may want to rethink that choice . Stay safe .
Real you never told us what you were using for your backing plates. Also why did you send when you ended up routering. Couldn't you have just trimmed to the line? Great to see you back on tasks..another strong video...thanks
What kind of boat are you in and what year ? I am thinking about going he same path as you Gus and would love to find a fixer upper to start . I have been following you from the beginning . Tanks ! ! !
Great video as usual. Question: are all the winches going to be manual? Have you thought about the option of electric, I know they can be adapted later and have you considered this?
Hi To all the Family First great Vlog as well. Q: 1 . Why when fitting new deck winches why not use Electric ????? seeing you are doing the change over?. Q:2 . Will you be putting a Search Light on the front to help with being able to see at night if needed? Q: 3 . Will you be fitting a Dodger around the cockpit to protect you and the Family under Passage ????. Q: 4 . Where on your Boat is the Life Raft is it with in a time frame to be deployed by one person or is it Auto Deploy when hits Water???.
What grade is Emma in and what is she studying in her school work. Also, how does she submit her work and who grades her homework? Inquiring granddaddy
Teal, do you have as-built drawings of your projects? Somewhere down the road, you will be asked if you can complete projects for other boat owners when they see the quality work you've done. "As-builts" could be a source of income to sell the drawings with or without your supervision time for the other boat owners to do the work. :¬) Webhead USA
My favorite day of the week is Onboard Lifestyle Day. Thank you so much for sharing!
It's very refreshing to see a young girl reading such a good deal.
thank you for explaining the logic behind your work, i appreciate it for dummies like me

I love how you showed the "blooper reel" at the end. The boat is looking great Teal!
Another fun vid. Maybe next week you can include the crab dinner.
..sailing along and upgrading as you go, good plan...great vid..
I love Teal's craftsmanship. No cutting corners, and very professional looking job on the backing plates and risers. Are there future plans to cover the cockpit, or put solar up?
He did say that he wanted to do some type of cover in a previous video and use that aluminum thing on the back as part of the support for it.
Looking awesome. Still lots of little things to finish. Can I suggest getting some good padding for your Captains seat
Great progress. Like the out-takes

Wow, look at the size of those roller bearings when you opened up the winch. Never seen the insides of one before.
Been waiting all week for you video. Thanks.
YOU ARE GREAT !!!!
Thank you for another great video.
Plase let us know which material you use for those raisers.
Love your video's, looking forward to more..
Thanks
Teal, you have the same hair-do as me except I don't have a pretty hairdresser to cut mine, I have to do it myself in a mirror. 🙂🦆
Go to a LOCAL BEAUTY SALON to find a pretty hair stylist dude. 💇🙌You do NOT have to do it yourself!🙌
Question for next weeks Q&A.
What are your plans for a dodger or some sort of helm weather protection?
You look pretty exposed while at the helm!
Also looking forward to the mainsail install.
Hi Teal, what is the material you are using for the backing plate and risers ?.
Gerard.
No visit to Westport is complete w/o a visit to Junky's Marine Hardware on Nyhus Street :) Well worth a trip
Teal, how often do you run on a single engine while motoring? At what RPM? Speed? Fuel burn rate?
Love the Videos My question is What's the Plan do you both have to go back to work, or are you sailing fo a couple years. Best of luck
Hi! What plastic material is it in the spacer you use under the Winch?
Seem that you guys have done a ton to refit, what has been the overall cost of the refit?
It's been awhile since we've heard " thickened epoxy " Lol.
Realize you have many projects in the works, any plans for an enclosed cockpit?
Good vid ya'll, Teal, you do excellent work buddy, Teal, are you going to put seat cushions on your helm benches? Thanks.
Are you planning to stop in Crescent City? I am at the marina here. Would love to say hi.
