Hi! This comment is for all 3 of you but mostly Emma! There is a really great newer Sailing Vlog that I really love but after seeing tonight how much Emma likes playing and learning how to get better at her violin I think all three of you (and ESPECIALLY Emma!) will love to subscribe to this fun and entertaining Vlog. I say so because the female side of this nice couple makes her violin a big part of their sailing adventures! She's played since she was younger than Emma is now - reaching professional skill levels after getting her 4 year degree with a music major all the while playing "Classical Violin" which she still studies and enjoys but with her latest passion being what she calls playing "Galic Folk Songs" with a strong emphasis in what she describes as "Gypsey Jazz Folk Fiddle"!!! She is a BLAST to listen to and it's very much worth watching all I think 8 videos from the start which are fun to watch just for their well done Sailing/Adventure all on it's own but following are excerpts to watch solely for her violin (or Fiddle!) playing parts of their last two episodes I'm linking to here solely for Emma's enjoyment especially! This is an original piece she just wrote in 2 days only this last week! th-cam.com/video/I4rIK_Dferg/w-d-xo.html Start watching at time 2:56 in the episode. This next section is her and an equally superbly skilled guitar player which is unreal as it shows the two of them actually meeting moments before for the first time and then jamming together moments later and creating simply jaw dropping music seconds after they raised their instruments. I hope Emma finds it oh so motivating and I would love to hear Emma and contacted her, starting a dialog and maybe even just possibly they might even meet each other in some future anchorage some day. LOL! Here is that link for their fascinating first meeting jam session! th-cam.com/video/zCqEH5Hgwm0/w-d-xo.html Start watching at time 8:05 in the episode. Finally if the two of you and Emma really have fun and subscribe to their neat channel I'd LOVE to hear about it! So please reply to this LONG 🙂 comment or better yet email me at: melvincurtice@msn.com and P.S. I love your channel as well with y'alls incredible and fantastic work you have and are making. Awesome Thanks so much! Melvin (Curtice) Austin Tx
Thanks for the links to " Sailing Magic Carpet" we are subscribers and Emma really loves their channel. I apologize for not responding earlier but for some reason both of your comments landed in our "Liikely Spam" file of our TH-cam account. I moved them over to "Published Comments" so I can respond. You are right, it would be really neat for Emma to meet other cruising violinist. We talked about it and it really motivated her to want to practice more...thanks for watching Melvin, cheers!
This has to be the best sailing blog online. I am pretty critcal too. Most are done by people that don't know what they are doing and are often boring. Your videos reflect your skills and positive attitude. Thanks for sharing.
Wow you really are Superman. I am beyond impressed. Your craftsmanship amazes me, but your parenting blows my mind. Now I understand why this boat project has taken so long. You should be building and designing boats for a living!
I could expound on how great and talented Teal's abilities are in craftsmanship and attention to detail in everything he does but I dont want him getting too big of a head so I will just say, Nice job!
Guest stateroom: Full length compound piano hinge door with articulation that latches, beautiful work as always. I am 5 minutes into the video and had to comment before watching the rest, wow.
First thing first, happy wife followed by fed educated youngster then onto the project. An orderly hierarchical processing of life’s essentials. Well done once more and surprisingly entertaining. Charming efficient happy families make me smile. Thanks you guy/gals
That articulating door was....just.. genius! when seeing the first door i went like...but but but, you were just so up and happy about the door blanks being skinned with solid mahogany, and yet you covered it in glass and painted it cold grey..but that is just a matter of taste i guess, then i just got a big smile seeing that articulating door, wonderfully smart!
That articulating door is impressive, have never seen one before. Glad you showed that you made a mistake, it means there is hope for the rest of us :)
Anyone who has ever owned a boat will tell you that there is almost never, enough storage space. Even if you think you have enough storage if somebody finds a way that can give you more and you adopt it, you will find useful stuff to keep in there! I have never tried to read all your 'to do' post-it notes Teal. Maybe my suggestion is on one since you obviously already have an access hatch or storage built into the bottom steps and thankfully there are many episodes I have yet to enjoy. But I offer a suggestion just in case this innovation has not yet occurred to you. Every time I see the steps from the bridge deck down into the hulls I am reminded of similar features I have seen before that have drawers or bins built into the risers. The lockers I am referring to are either hinged out from the bottom front edge like small bins contoured to the hull or just roll straight out like normal drawers elsewhere if space permits! Multiple small storage spaces are incredibly handy for stowing everything from footwear, tools and provisions to spare parts and fishing tackle! I am endlessly impressed by you all and eagerly anticipate each new episode of awesomeness so thanks very much for welcoming strangers into your lives and thereby enriching us all!
The door is fantastic. The video as always is amazing. Thank you. This is a message for Emma. I had not realized that Emma was so into her violin she also makes a good worker bee. There is a new violinist that is living aboard and sailing the world check out SV magic carpet. I think she will enjoy another friend. all for now s
Is it my imagination or is Emma taking Miracle grow ?? I swear I think she looks an inch taller in every Video !! Great video and can't wait to see the boat sail !! thumbs up guys ! The boat looks like new !!
Wow! I apologise if this sounds weird but, I held my breath when I saw that articulated door, then breathed out real slow in amazement!! Trying to explain the impact of your creative work! Well done OL family🌟 Cheers Jen🐨
Teal this is just my personal opinion, I think you had the right idea the first time with the hinge on the outboard side, maybe it will come to pass at a later date. lol, Your work is just outstanding.
Very nice setup and install. You lucked out with the door slab bonus win. Look forward to the final bit of fit, skin and so on..yea, that dust cleanup system, so cool, another bit of lucky you Cpt. Teal and it cooks too !
There is a sailboat channel called Sailing Magic Carpet that Emma might enjoy. There is a woman on the boat that plays a beautiful violin. This is what you have to look forward too when get underway. Sitting in a deserted bay with Emma playing her violin. How great will that be.
Would you not find it easier to use millimetres rather than fractions of inches for measuring and marking your work? It also makes calculations easier. I work in construction and used imperial measurements when I was younger but have now used metric exclusively for over two decades. I absolutely love your videos, truly inspirational. All the best from the UK. Mike.
There is some serious love for right now Teal,I was just thinking about how I was going to do my doors and you pop up with this little gem.Thank you buddy.Cheers Ross
Thanks Ross! Can't wait for you to start your interior trim out. When do you think you will be to that point? I only say because I would love to meet you and donate some labor once your past the itchy phase. I could learn a lot from you!
Well, I really must say....what a cat you and Ross could build..... I could see a great collaboration between you two in a business building a well constructed and thought out live abord cat .
Best dust collection system everrrrrr! Where can I get a copy?! Ü WOW! What a schedule you have and I'm tipping my hat to you for home schooling! Now we know why Emma is so centered in life. I love how you take us on the journey and show us your mistakes as well. Hey...I cut it twice and it's still to short! PEACE OUT! Ü
I have a few old antique fishing reels(1940's-50's) I would like to send to Emma's fishing gear if you would accept them. One is a Penn 180 and 1 is an Ocean City 940 I have gone through them and lubed and greased they are in good shape
Hi Teal, as always your dedication to doing it just right never fails to amaze me. Did you ever consider making this a bi-fold door that would eliminate the problem of the door covering the bench so much and possibly allow for the door to be open when you want to use the sink. As always stay safe and have fun.
I did not consider it but after calculating it out that would not work. The rough opening is 20" a bifold would subtract double the door thickness from that. After you add the space needed for clearance you would have an opening of 16-7/8" which would be just a bit too snug...thanks for the thought Glen.
Another bonus of hinging the door on the left is that the intrusion into the foot path at the bottom right is not exacerbated by the added thickness of the door / articulation. Aesthetically it would be better opening to the right as you tried originally but practicality wins. On a side note, do you find the white and grey paint you used has a hard enough finish to hold up to daily wear and tear?
Very interesting video. I've never seen an articulating door. A really nice idea, especially using a spring to put it back in position. I think home schooling is great. Emma seems really smart. Does she get regular play time with some friends too?
Hi crew, greetings from the 🇬🇧UK🇬🇧,I think I've missed 2 episodes of the vlog??, anyway my new name for Teal is "Captain Precision",😂attention to detail is everything for a proper job, measure twice cut once!! ,it won't belong now before the call of the oceans is answered and I can't wait, all the best crew👍until the next time, stay safe👋💖🇬🇧
It's a Porter Cable 371k compact belt sander. Not a lot of power, but very convenient to have onboard. I will agree with you on my dust collector. Lol Thanks for watching.
That is why I went with continuous hinges. On a standard set of door hinges you will have a total of about 12 fasteners to the door and jamb and it would only take any 3 fasteners to fail before the door became unhinged. On a continuous hinge you will have 72 fasteners spreading the load evenly down the door and jamb and you would have to have at least 20+ fail. I also installed heavy duty door catches to secure any door movement in rough weather...thanks for watching!
Did you have reasons (other than aesthetic) of having the doors go all the way to the floor, rather than having to step over the bottom of the bulkhead and avoid the articulating part on the bottom of the doors? I love that the floor is flat all the way through, obviously! Do you find that it is worth the extra time on the doors?
I am looking forward to it. I'm interested. The drain hole in the back space looks small. Why can't the drainage catch up during heavy rains and waves, after snow? Since it is still halfway, may it change from now on?
You inspired me to tackle a few projects that required me to custom frame with Nida Core and use fiberglass and epoxy for the first time!!! I am sooo jazzed to learn this process from you! Thank you so much! Question.....how do I smooth out the fiberglass so that it is ready for paint? It is quite bumpy which of course will make the paint job look bumpy! Your doors look so smooth! How did you get such a smooth finish? Thank you in advance for any guidance on finishing!
When I lay cloth directly on Nida Core I use an 8oz cloth and sand and fair between laminations. I just give it a light coat of fairing compound and sand most of it off before the next layer. You will see your project lay a little flatter with each lamination.
Perfect. Hopefully the fairing compound is easy to sand and NOT like car bondo which requires a lot of "elbow grease" to sand flat. Grateful for your response and information. Cheers.
Couldn't you solve the problem by stoping the hinge where the bulge starts? The hinge would be a few inches higher than the articulation, or you could move the articulation up. Either way the door could swing out.
That would probably work but the bulge would have still created a wear spot in the paint since the hinge is 1/8" thick and the bump was 3/16". Now that the door is hung and Linh loves it...I will most likely leave it. Thanks for the thought.
It seems since you were doing an articulated door, you could have done the articulation at the level of the hump. The hinge would have only come down to the hump but the piano hinge would be plenty strong enough. Or was the hump just too high?
That would drive Teal crazy knowing the hinge didn't run the full length plus I really want to install full length mirrors on our doors later on so this is a great compromise for us. Trying to move past the hump so this doesn't create another big project. Lol 😜

you are obviously an excellent craftsman, but why would you not clamp a fence to guide your saw yes i know you can cut a straight line but it just makes life easier
I had a nice fence and track saw but had to scale all of my tools down when we moved onboard. So now I have to go old school and just muscle through the projects with minimal tools.
You have 23,000 subscribers why doesn’t Ryobi kick you out a thank you crate of new tools If you hadn’t left at 3/16 bump in the door frame. Ryobi would’ve sent you a whole new crate of tools.

This is probably too late, but please reconsider hanging the door against the outer hull. Having the door open against the counter will be an irritation every time you use this area. Alternatives : 1 - As Mal L's comment square the opening on the outboard side. 2 - The hinge on an articulated door can't go all the way to the bottom anyway, articulate further up the door only going down as far as the hinge will open smoothly. This would be the quickest fix other than being an articulated door, but you were willing to make it that way in the 1st place. 3 - An 1/8 inch near mid bottom isn't that much, lay the length of hinge for an articulated door against the bulge and just fill the gap behind it with your epoxy resin filler. The door will open slightly up when against the hull, it might not even be noticeable. Its a door that is going to spend most of its time latched open for ventilation, spaciousness (increased sight line) , etc. And most likely will only be closed for privacy. Having to close it to just use the sink behind it, not a good idea, IMHO. Everything else on your remodel has been so right its beautiful.
That is a clever fix but I am committed at this point besides the door swing only covers up 1 of the 2 sinks in the head. Thanks for making me rethink my decision..I may not sleep tonight. :)
Why aren’t you using MM? I hate non metric. Dividing 19 5/8” or 498.475 mm. So much easier. You do excellent work and the articulating door I’ve never seen before, brilliant
Lk M Who wants to count all those little lines? SAE is the way to go! Very sorry the U. S. signed on with France and the metric system in the 1800’s. I guess some mistakes can’t be fixed.
I love the work you're doing. But it absolutely kills me when I see Americans measuring things with crazy, bizarre fractions of inches. Just start using metric. I mean you, specifically. And anyone else doing any sort of work which requires measurements. Grassroots metric. Just do it. Your progeny will thank you.
Who are those 11 low life people dislike your fantastic video

Can't get enough of your presentations. You do such a wonderful job in explaining the 'hows and whys of your project'. Amazing work you do. Thanks.

After watching a few of these do it yourself vids....its easy to see Teal is a master craftsman.......and super meticulous with his work.

You do such an awesome job on building, installing and finishing your boat. Your a very talented carpenter.
That articulating door is impressive, have never seen one before. Glad you showed that you made a mistake, it means there is hope for the rest of us :)
You left us “hanging” until next week!
im sure the wait will be worth it
Unbelievably, crazy genius. You’re a talented dude.
You do a really great job editing out the boring parts and keeping it moving.
Boat is looking amazing. You'll knock that to do list out in no time. Maybe next, a fold up mini sailing cat for Emma?
you know it would be fun to watch her progress you should get a little of her playing in your episodes once and a while
She has a played in a few episodes already but you are right and I will.
As always you never cease to amaze Teal. Impressive work on all the doors.
Not just a thumb up, but a big WOW!
Thanks Jay!
Think your attention to detail is great! How could anything go wrong with your wonderful helpers.😏😉

As always, incredible attention to detail has resulted in the the fabulous look of your boat. Kudos!

Congratulations, great work again. I’m just amused listening to you work in imperial measurements. All the best

I second guessed it for the first week or two but am very comfortable with it now.
Ah, a cliffhanger. But to be fair, cut at the right moment.
Thumb's up 👍. Can't wait to see the progress.
Another fantastic job, you are definitely a master ship wright
Thanks KC, I can't be a master shipwright yet. I am learning new and better techniques everyday. Thanks for watching!

”You are very lucky that you are talented and cute” 😆😆😆
I know this is a little self-serving, but I love that you choose "SWANSON" as the maker of your straight edge (13:33). Must be a quality tool there.
You must be an heir to the Swanson tool empire :)
Actually growing up all the kids teased me about Swanson TV Dinners. Either of which I am unfortunately not associated with.

good job dude awesome video
Late post: Am I the only one who had hopes he will take the difficult way? Of course, another excellent job as always!
Love your uploads, been meaning to ask since you showed the bathroom build what was the internal size and finished walls are 2” plus 2X 1/4” ply.
The finished walls are just under 2" thick overall. 1-1/2"(stud/foam) + 1/8"(ply) + 1/8"(ply) + 1/16"(glass/fair) + 1/16"(glass/fair)
I have a few old antique fishing reels(1940's-50's) I would like to send to Emma's fishing gear if you would accept them. One is a Penn 180 and 1 is an Ocean City 940 I have gone through them and lubed and greased they are in good shape

What brand of belt sander is that ? ..
Yes that is one cute little dust collector you have there....
It's a Porter Cable 371k compact belt sander. Not a lot of power, but very convenient to have onboard. I will agree with you on my dust collector. Lol Thanks for watching.
You could make a cardboard door and use sticky tape for the hinge as a test door.
OBTW. Difficult to shake of whistlin’ the intro tune. Darn, but makes me smile. Where did that come from? The tune?
You think those continuous hinges are going to stand up to the boat in heavy seas? Great vid!
That is why I went with continuous hinges. Did Emma choose the small cabin? I want a full tour!
Emma has her own cabin but spends most of the time in the guest cabin.
Doesn’t everybody have an articulating door? Wow.

Great work as always. You gotta love that vacuuming system. I was really curious about the doors. Did your catamaran originally come with doors?
Not one interior door just the old cockpit door, and yes, absolutely in love with the dust control system.
Awesome - such a snug fit already and I see no evidence of the hump at all...

Cheers.
Again, nice job and such an eye for detail. Looks like a Seattle Police boat was bothering you gain at the beginning. Is it a probation problem? 😁
Ha Ha!...we have become friend with the SPD since we started our VLOG...they are great!
How have your neighbors done with all your work? Any issues?
We have been in this slip for 8 years with no issues. The entire marina is rooting us on...they are awesome!
That’s a very busy pace of life! Why doesn’t Emma go to a regular state school?
She went to public school through the 4th grade. We started homeschooling this year because of our upcoming travels.
Lol 😜
The door hinges your using on the doos are technically called Piano hinge not continuous hinges
As light as those doors are, couldn’t you have half hinged an articulated door? Great videos Great family!

Linh loves it, Most important. Works, second. ;-) I hope it proves to be functional underway. Still great videos and family. Cheers.

Straightening hullside jamb, re-articulating door and reversing door hardware......
:)
Please extend my regards to your dust collection system 🤣
Done!
you are obviously an excellent craftsman, but why would you not clamp a fence to guide your saw yes i know you can cut a straight line but it just makes life easier
I had a nice fence and track saw but had to scale all of my tools down when we moved onboard. So now I have to go old school and just muscle through the projects with minimal tools.
👌✌️✌️✌️✌️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🎖

Onboard Lifestyle That's OK, as long as you realize that YOUR sink will be the one behind the door and your wife's will be the one on the right.
@@jupiterdotp92 true fact! 😜😜👍🏻
