Love you channel and I think Emma is so fortunate to have parents that "go so boldly" (and cautiously) and still make time for boat remodeling, repair and home school on top of that. You have inspired me to gear up and go sailing in retirement. Can't wait to see you go blue water cruising. Fair winds and following seas
If you are already hitting 7 knots WITHOUT a mainsail you are going to have a permanent reef in it once you do get it up! Either that, Teal, or Linh will have to put some of the things she took off the boat in the 'weight loss plan' back on board so Basik doesn't go airborne ! She sure cuts the water nicely at 2:40 Nice to see everyone on the move.
Lol, I wish. But once we build our hardtop, that will add more weight so I doubt I can convince the Captain to ok my additions. 😜 its ok. I'm too excited for our main and enclosure to care about more shoes and clothes. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Crab pot watch just might be the ideal job for Emma. She's at the age where her vision is at it's sharpest and she'll notice things her old folks parents miss ;-).
Trees... Pots... Have you considered extending the railing and adding princess seating on both hulls? As often as it seems needed to have the crew on watch might be handy. Great video, really like the added information at the end about fuel use etc.
My dad and I fished commercially out of West Port. Somethings never change. I love eating grabs but I also honor thous pot setters. Sorry I missed seeing there but happy that your heading south.
Now That was a great run for SV Basik! I can’t believe how quick she was with just that small jib! Imagine what it will do with full sails, I had no idea that crab fishing was prevalent in that area and being such, created quite a challenge for the helmsman And the forward lookout. Lin and Emma did a great job of guiding the skipper through the maze. It must be nice Not to be on a schedule, allowing you to stay as long Or short as you want. Jealous? You darn bet!
Thank you all for another fun video. There my image was at the end of the episode, as I was this morning, mug in hand with fresh Alpha Quadrant coffee. It has become a welcome ritual - to watch your adventure and sip coffee. Smooth sailing to SV Basik !
That gives me a much better idea of where you guys are, or at least were once. It’s also improving my geography around the States! Thanks for sharing and safe passage.
Such a beautiful boat, Teal you have done wonders with her, but it's a pity there weren't more of them made, it was a good hull shape to start with, so glad you saw beyond the cosmetic issues and rescued her. Thats some really nice sailing speed under a small jib, a main and a code D or 0 on a prodder would be perfect for the light winds in the tropics.
What a sail, dodging all those crab pots had to be a little nerve-wracking. It was great to see Emma at the helm. Take care crew and can't wait for the next episode.
I envy you Teil, no lawn to mowe, your food under the keel, goodlooking chiefmate and a able abelbody Seaman, what more can you ask for. You are living the life I wished for, but I shouldent wine, I have sailed to Chicago twice, been up the Amasonas two days sailing with a M/V Birgit. But now, at the age of 71 I would like a "kata" and I would like to die on the sea, where my heart is.
Bar hopping with Captain Teal!! WAHOO singing all our favorite pirate songs. Laughing and making up a tail to tell Linh when getting back to the boat at 4 am. What an epic night! Oh! Those kind of bars. Them crab pots were a challenge I am sure. EMMA BAR PILOT EXTRAORDINARY!! Be happy, be safe.
Great video! Hope you find time to visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria. Also Fort Stevens is fun. Remember to bring some flashlights to explore the oils fortifications.
Linh. next time you have to go out in the fairly cold. add a trash bag your legs between the first layer of fleece and the rest of your pants.. this puts creates an even better dead air space to block cold. i wish somebody made a hip length trash bag bootie to pull on and tape up to the fleece at the hips.
We loved Emma's little geography lesson. Emma might spend a couple of minutes each episode showing map location, weather , and perhaps plotted course. Or perhaps she could give us all a little history lesson, or some information of current location. Might be a future broadcaster in that young lady. Keep em coming. We love it.
Making the first trek is always fun, even with those pesky crab pots. Weather looks beautiful even with the cooler air but lots of sun to warm ya to the bones. Continued good seas and fair winds for the continued journey and good to see all the smiles, yea I seen em !!
Wow, how far out from shore do they place those pots? Happy that you were able to head south. I adore those area's you're showing & last visited in June. I'm in MN but we've family scattered around Portland OR. When we visit, we always have a trip to Astoria & down the coast. Fair winds!
It really depends on how far they want to go out. Range is from shore up to 25-30 miles out and everything in between. Key is to check with the locals and keep an eye out. Even they say, sail during daylight hours so you can spot them. 👍
I guess we all have our interpretation and meaning of Bar Hopping, even though my meaning is more fun it can be dangerous too.....We take it for granite but, I'm learning from the crew of SV basik, that there is so much to take into consideration even before setting sail and into being underway of the man made and natural obstacles that challenge your journey.....Nice to see you are underway and don't worry you're in good hands with your captain and lets face it, there's so much to look forward to of a warmer and more manageable climate than the one you're leaving....Be safe family...
We encounter "lobster pot buoys" here in Maine - a similar experience. In some areas, they sometimes appear to be only a few feet apart. It's a multihull sailor's nightmare! In fact, the majority of sailboats in this area are monohulls. Multihulls are rarely seen. It's nice to see you finally able to break free of Westport even if it was a nice looking port of call. I've been over the Columbia River bar before, but the last time was in 1987 as an engineering officer aboard the baby super tanker: "Texaco Rhode Island." It was an old T-3 tanker, and I remember some rough rides through there (even felt the belly of the ship "kiss" the bottom a few times.
Another great video. I know from experience that lobster / crab pots are a pain to cruisers, but on the plus side, at least the fishermen have been compensating you with some of their bounty 🦀😊
Yes, it was kind of a pain, but we don't blame them. This is their livelihood and we respect the hard work they put in. Its not an easy life and these guys and gals are so generous!
Ilwaco is an amazing town. I have spent a lot of summers fishing from there or Port of Chinook. Edit: and yes, LOTS of boats end up on the sand. We never came in at high tide. That way we had a better chance of floating off the sand when we get stuck.
Wow nice adventure as ya state bar hopping. The conditions were ideal ! Bet it got dark 1 hour after tying up to dock in Ilwaco (sp?) & if so you planned the trip perfectly. It's a hassle having to look for crab pots. 1000s & 1000s ( like WW 2 mines set to sink ships or subs) & the float or buoys are not very big to see. Plus the sun shine reflects on the water making it 100x harder to see. Brings back memories of many times the sun was setting to the west & directly in my face & the reflection on the water was as if a big flashlight was shining in my face. Basically impossible to see if a log or debris was in front of the boat. Capt. Teal a very fine job indeed. If you were Captain of the Titanic she would of docked in NYC maybe late but safely. Your ship mates 1st class Linh & 2nd class ( but on her way to 1st class in short order ) Emma proved how skillful they are. Ironically on Friday changed the channel to Daystar Canada & a preacher gave a very positive message & then near the end it showed members of his church cooking soups that were from dif. parts of the world. There a a music playing in the background very similar to the start of your vids ! Patience for a window & it came ! Safety first as who in their right mind wants to be in rough seas ( imagine trying to spots crab pot floats in 4-5 -10 ft seas ???? ..or have to cross an angry Columbia bar that has taken big ships 100s of feet long. Trust in The Lord with all your heart as that's when He's got your back in life and in death. Keep loving each other daily & Compass too. On average little dogs live 11 yrs. But let's hope he lives above average to 14-15 !!! He wants to see many ports of call before he goes to doggie heaven. With ALL my heart I believe in a heaven for our pets. God speed.
Couple of pilot adages from an aviator to a sailor. Applies to both. “There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old bold pilots.” And “If in doubt turn about.” Stay safe! Can’t wait to see the SV basic under the main sheet!
It’s great to see you sailing! Love your boat projects too and your cooking videos but the sailing is the best. Hope you get to the French Polynesia, and Cook Islands one day. I would love to sail to them one day.
Well done you guys, I wonder how many times you went cross eyed watching for pots, I recon you have two little gems on board teal, a big hug to you all. Cheers.
Those river bars are like nothing else. East coast has lots of small inlets but nothing like these huge rivers! How far offshore do the crab pots extend? Could you have gone further out , SV Basie , stretching its legs a little! Cheers Warren
Hello Basik , It's great to see the pointy end(s) of Basik headed South ( just moving actually ) . Looks like those crab pots are certainly keeping your heads on " swivel ". I find it very surprising that they are not regulated to have bright orange ( hi-vis ) buoys . I get it in the likes of Thailand etc , but along the US coast , I thought they would be better/stronger regulated. And , I'm certainly not suggesting this ...but what's to stop you/anybody from hauling one in at lunchtime? Keep your " Compasses " happy ...one fed and the other on " S " Thanks kindly for sharing Bob from Calgary
All the bouys are marked to the fishing/crabbing vessel they belong to. As for us or anyone hauling in a pot for a meal, 1. They was way too heavy and 2. That's stealing! Lol. We have such respect for these guys and gals that work so hard in such a dangerous industry, there is no way we would do that to them. Thanks for watching! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
haha I love an "Open Bar" LOL Still leaving the winch handle in the winch head I see Teal (@2.25) LOL (sorry I was always taught not to do that) Awesome to see you guys underway sailing again !!! Fair winds and following seas Basik!!
I'm so glad the conditions for travel were in your favor! Looks like you are in a warmer climate now. Looking forward to more of your travels. Safe travels!
I'm waiting to see Teal's vibe change. Waiting for that touch of relaxing, chill, Captain. Maybe watch a little Delos tonight? LOL Maybe you all could meet up? La Vagabond, Delos, Doodles?
Holy crab pots Batman! Those S/V basik guyz put my picture at the tail end of their episode 101 video and made me nearly famous ☺! I guess buying that S/V basik "Dad's hat" in the S/V basik swag store paid off (lesson for viewers... buy some S/V basik swag)!!! Great video Great job crew! Finally on the move! Westport is gonna miss you guyz.
I'm thinking those pots are found along a couple fathom lines? Would moving a few more miles out to sea be worth the extra time it would take? Also; "Brrrr" when standing on the front deck in the wind; that has to be cold in February! .... I am guessing your next port w/b Newport, a good port of call for your family.
@@linhgobenyt YES! Only 2 weeks to Daylight savings! I love that time of year! I'm forever pulling over to take pictures of the sunrises! You guys don't need to pull over because you're right in the middle of it all! So cool!
A little history on the Columbia River. My dad was the second person to travel down the Columbia River from it's conception. The first man to do it, did it in a raft. My dad did it in a wooden canoe back in the early 1960's before the river had all the dams along the way. He got the keys to the city of Astoria and there was a big celebration in his honor. I don't believe that anyone has done that adventure since. He also canoed all the rivers along the way for the thrill and challenge of white water navigation at it's finest. There are a few articles that I found on the internet about his adventure but I had to dig deep to find anything.
They might have had one dam built and were building another at the time but now, pretty much, the entire river has so many dams that it's like a lake compared to when he did his adventure. Alex Laird. www.si.com/vault/1964/02/24/608254/the-columbia-a-gem-of-a-river
That is when sailing is most enjoyed. No schedule, just good sailing. Emma was having a blast and already has learned a lot from this passage. She is a great mariner.
As impressive as it is seeing you guys doing 5 knots in light air with a reefed headsail, it just whets my appetite to see what she is capable of fully rigged! 😁 I'm trying to remember if you have dagger boards? It would be great to see you hook up with SV Ruby Rose so Nick and Terysa could 'review' your cat. It will probably never happen, but I'm sure they would be suitably impressed!
Great job guys teal if I can make just one suggestion when you do your Teal your walking videos we can hear you and it be nice to see where you’re walking and what you’re saying as cute as you are I’d like to see where you’re going. 😐🇳🇴👍
I live up river about 60nm in St. Helens Oregon it always been a little funny when telling Oregonians or even Washingtonians where I live and they say “oh by the mountain “ 🤦♂️👍👍
We forgot to watch your video yesterday...strange because it's a ritual for us! Soooo happy to see you guys pushing on with smooth seas! Except for the crab pots, but I guess that's all part of the adventure. Btw, who in the world would give a thumbs down to a video like this? Jealous people? I don't get it. Anyway, all the best! Tim and Tammie
Ya know...It never crossed my mind about crab fishing lines etc. That would damage the props and be costly to the fisherman as well. I will purchase some gear soon!
Excellent timing and planning to transit the Columbia bar. BZ Can you share with your audience how much does it cost on average to tie up overnight in these small marinas or municipal docks? Do you get a weekly or monthly rate for longer stays?
Transient rates for these areas range from $15-$30 per night. Most Marinas will give you the monthly rate if you are there more than 14 days since it usually is cheaper. Larger cities tend to be more expensive which is why we stay away from them. Hope that helps!
We thought about it, but then we would have to remove our zincs. Not enough clearance for both. We should be fine as long as we keep a sharp eye out for debris in the water. 👍
Do you think you might find your way into Humboldt bay , in Eureka, California for a brief stop on your way it would be nice to meet you and your magnificent boat !!! I used to live in Portland ,Oregon and was privileged to have owned a boat or two am 80 in march 15th this year and follow you with much excitement. Think you for this privilege . Carl Stout
We are looking forward to visiting Eureka on our way South! Teal has fond memories of when his Dad and brothers sailed and stayed in your area in the late 70s. 👍🏻
You were obviously right in the crab depth. I am curious why you did not take a long jibe out (10º west of line) and then back in. It would have made very little difference in distance and time and would have avoided most of the crab pots.
I recommend West Moorage Basin over Warrenton. From West Moorage Basin you can walk around Astoria, but there is literally nothing at Warrenton. We've stayed at both, and trust me, unless you want to stay on the boat 100% fo the time, West Moorage Basin is the place to be.
@@12VALVETORQUE I don't see a Costco there, but I do see the Fred Meyer a long ways off. In Astoria there are a ton of places to go, including Golden Luck Chinese where you get giant plates of food for not much money just a few blocks from the marina. I would never stay in Warrenton again, and Astoria is great, especially in the summer. And a funny story, while staying at West Moorage Basin, I was reading a magazine and in it was a story about Astoria. In the magazine was a photo of the Red Lion Hotel taken from the very spot where our boat was in the moorage! I mean I was looking at the magazine and looking out the window of the boat and seeing the same exact view!
wow boats are moving, lol, they should make their fishing buoys better so they can be seen on long, scary pictures Emma shows, well done with a captain and a cook and first "mate" lol
Its all about timing and planning in order to safely cross these bars. The dock fees aren't bad along this way. Daily rate ranges from $15-$25 and most marinas will give you their monthly rate after 14 days if it is less. Major city marinas are usually more expensive so we avoid those. HTH!
There is, but after talking to the local guys, they said its more of a gentleman's agreement and the towboat lane is not a for sure clear zone. www.yachtsdelivered.com/towboatlanes.html
@@linhgobenyt I live in Mystic Connecticut we have the same issue with Lobster pots. Had a couple wrap around my prop at 2AM. Had to dive over board and cut it off.
Why not go father out, away from the crab pots and do and overnight sail if you have a couple days? Once you get the mainsail up, you're going to be so fast!
We want to see and try to visit as many places on our way South as possible. Lots to see and experience before we leave this area since it will be a long while before we come back. 👍🏻

I guess buying that S/V basik "Dad's hat" in the S/V basik swag store paid off (lesson for viewers... buy some S/V basik swag)!!! Great video Great job crew! Finally on the move! Westport is gonna miss you guyz.
We just happen to be in longbeach this weekend... Heard compass barking as we walked by, but my wife was being too shy to knock and say hi.
Sorry we missed you. We were out visiting with Teal's brother. 👍🏻
It would have been nice to meet you guys, but at least we got a selfie in front of your boat. Be safe in your travels.
Exactly...go around not thru.
Sailing SOUTH - Woo Hoo!🎉💥🎉💥. Still too cold❄️❄️❄️
Yay! Sailing and yes, it is way too COLD! But Spring is right around the corner, we can feel it!
Robert Laird the Bonneville Dam is my grand dads pride and joy.
They might have had one dam built and were building another at the time but now, pretty much, the entire river has so many dams that it's like a lake compared to when he did his adventure. Alex Laird. www.si.com/vault/1964/02/24/608254/the-columbia-a-gem-of-a-river
Teal, if you get the chance, you should take the tour of Point desertion coast guard base. I think you'll would get a kick out of it.
And it would make a great episode...........
Your intro music has become my TGIF :)
G'day.
As i pointed out before, bar crossings are dangerous and should respected regardless where you are.
Gerard.
I admire the no urgency timeline, safety top priority, and family bonding. Was that a hint “Emma at the helm” future captain? Third mate Compass.
I know! I am so anxious to get our main back on and a genoa and spinnaker. She was made to sail and she is going to fly! We do have daggerboards. 😀😊👍🏻
..finally underway to new adventures. great vid, old ma nature is finally cooperating..lol...
Thanks guys! 🤗🤗
Your crew deserves comfortable princess seats at the bows. Just saying :)
Linh's answer to that is "What princesses? Don't you need princesses onboard?" Lol
Gotta do Long Beach. It’s iconic.
if you get the opportunity...Hike up to the light house and museum and check out Ft. Canby.
You couldn't have done it better. The CRB is some of the most dangerous water in the world with over 2,000 ships being sunk and 1,400 lives lost.
Ya know...It never crossed my mind about crab fishing lines etc. That would damage the props and be costly to the fisherman as well. I will purchase some gear soon!
Thanks Mark! Be sure to send us a picture of you in it! 📸
Greetings and salutations!
Zippo has pocket sized hand warmers that might help on cold days like this. Safe travels ^^/
So would this be a good place to make the hardtop? Whether it’s rain and wind or sunny hot days think your gonna want it soon!
Been there many times. Love Ilwaco. What date is this? Are you fairly current on your video releases? Good job staying safe?
Almost too current. This was just a few days ago. Lol 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Next time you need to dodge crab pots, send Emma up into the crows nest. Or just put her in a bosun chair ! Much better view. (ha ha !)
No ideas Jack! Emma is a risktaker! 😜😜
Have you considered installing rope cutters on your sail drives?
of course compass🦴
You were obviously right in the crab depth. I am curious why you did not take a long jibe out (10º west of line) and then back in. It would have made very little difference in distance and time and would have avoided most of the crab pots.
I recommend West Moorage Basin over Warrenton. From West Moorage Basin you can walk around Astoria, but there is literally nothing at Warrenton. We've stayed at both, and trust me, unless you want to stay on the boat 100% fo the time, West Moorage Basin is the place to be.
is that the one on the Skipanon River? near Costco and Fred Meyers etc...
That's cool.
Sailors' nightmare
wow boats are moving, lol, they should make their fishing buoys better so they can be seen on long, scary pictures Emma shows, well done with a captain and a cook and first "mate" lol
I hope you take some time and come up the Columbia River to Portland
We may not make it into Portland with basik, but may do a day trip to take in the sites.
Seventy third!! Love your channel!
Thanks Clay! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Good Job! There are some scary/awesome bar crossing videos out there but your crossing makes it look too easy. LOL. Does the docking cost much?
Its all about timing and planning in order to safely cross these bars. The dock fees aren't bad along this way. Daily rate ranges from $15-$25 and most marinas will give you their monthly rate after 14 days if it is less. Major city marinas are usually more expensive so we avoid those. HTH!
🤙🏼
There is a carb pot free zone off the Washington Oregon cost. Look up U.S. West Coast Towboat Lanes (crab pot free)
There is, but after talking to the local guys, they said its more of a gentleman's agreement and the towboat lane is not a for sure clear zone. www.yachtsdelivered.com/towboatlanes.html
Plenty of cocoa butter on windy days will keep you from getting windburn Lynn
Lots of moisturizer these past few days, but so well worth it! 😉⛵⛵
you need to get a good pair of Polarized sunglasses. You will see those crab pots much easier. Love your videos keep up the adventures.
We were all wearing polarized sunglasses. Lol they help a lot, but sometimes you miss a crab pot here and there. 😜😎🧐🧐🧐
@@linhgobenyt I live in Mystic Connecticut we have the same issue with Lobster pots. Had a couple wrap around my prop at 2AM. Had to dive over board and cut it off.
I used snow ski googles & could see very well.
Why not go father out, away from the crab pots and do and overnight sail if you have a couple days? Once you get the mainsail up, you're going to be so fast!
We want to see and try to visit as many places on our way South as possible. Lots to see and experience before we leave this area since it will be a long while before we come back. 👍🏻
Glad to see you moving south!!
Us too!
I Shared your day on Twitter and Codias with 100+ followers. I hope you pick up some subscribers from this. Peace and Love.
Thanks Roy! You're the BEST! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Well that was an enjoyable sail.... ( he says from his armchair enjoying a stubbie or three ) nice to see you on the move.
