    3 things wrong here. Heater should be on the floor. Heat is rising to the peak of the roof, so insulated bubble wrap insulation stapled to the underside of the rafters would eliminate the rising heat loss. A few ceiling fans to push the heat down.

      Also, a metal can or bucket filled with sand, a few feet away will absorb heat, and slowly radiate it into the room when the heaters off . 10' X 25' plastic drop cloth for rafters and roll-up door is a $1 at H. F.

    I work up in Alaska and we would point the heater at large metal objects in the shop ie large tool box or engine blocks. It helps keep some radiant heat around. Not to hot your just trying to warm them up .

    Hot air rises FAST. The reason you can't feel the heat several feet away is because once you get beyond the forward air velocity from the fan, it's going straight to the ceiling. Let it run for a while and then climb up that ladder behind you and you'll understand immediately. The advertised 1350 sqft is likely under an 8' ceiling. You need to sheet the bottom of the trusses with something. Drywall, plywood, Styrofoam, even cardboard. Anything to keep the hot air down. If you don't want to do that much work, put in some ceiling fans. If you only care about warming the area around a car, put a fan behind the heater and you'll get more forward distance. You're going to get tired of swapping out those BBQ tanks. Get 2) 100lb bottles. The second bottle will probably give you a few weeks to find a convenient time to get the first one filled.

    I have the big brother of this, 160,000BTU model I've had it over 30 years which is not so dusty for the £200 i paid for it (brand new). When I had my 1450sq ft shop, about as tall as yours, It would bring the shop from "ice on the floor outside" to "warm enough to spray cellulose paint in" in about an hour and a half if run flat out. But once it was up to temp you could screw it down to 2-3/10 and it'd be fine the rest of the day. Used like this 8 hours a day 5 days a week with winter temps hovering around zero (C) a 50kg bottle of gas (the 5ft tall one) would last about 3 weeks. Now i'm retired and only have a measly 400 sq ft to heat, I rarely use it, mainly, if it's cold enough to NEED it, it's too cold to want to go out and fire it up!
    In the UK and Europe all propane/butane bottles except the very small ones that clip over have the LH thread, it's a safety thing so you don't get them mixed up with oxygen.

    Ventless heaters not only produce CO2, they also produce H2O. The water vapor will condense on any cold surface. This will cause rust on bare metal and can cause problems with your walls and ceiling. I ran a wall mounted ventless gas heater that caused condensation damage to my garage. I now have a 60k btu vented, ceiling mounted furnace that has worked great for many years without the condensation issues. I'm from Minnesota where heat is needed 24/7 if you ever want to use the garage. Keeping the concrete slab from freezing makes working in the garage so much better when its below freezing outside. If I built a new garage, in-floor heating would be the way to go.

      I just finished my 30x30 shop. I rolled out 3-300 foot rolls of 1/2 “ pex tubing 1 foot apart under the concrete. I then hooked it to a distribution manifold. I hook a gas hot water heater to the closed loop system with expansion tank and pump in the loop. I have a thermostat hooked to the pump. I start heating my floor to 70* when the outside temperature drops to and below 70*. Once you get the floor temperature at your preferred temperature it is easily maintained. I also have a mini split unit that cools and heats. 70* year round in the building.

    • @brainndamage
      @brainndamage 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      yeah exactly, you don't want to put more moisture in the air than there already is, even without it, condensation will form on cold surfaces just from the moisture that comes up from the ground or from the air you exhale. IR/radiant heaters are the best choice for localized heating but won't heat the entire shop.

The hotter the air, the faster it rises .. i bet if you use a temp gun youd find the ceiling is quite warm. Cheap fix.. hang a 20 " cheap box fan horizontal blowing down over your work area set to low or medium.. youll be amazed of the difference. I use a 50k kerosene and my fan blows down and under my car ! If you like it, get a bigger tank for outside and a longer hose run through the wall. Youll find a 20 lb wont last very long at all.

    Tony for this application you should have check out “diesel air heater”. It’s a sealed diesel combustion chamber with intake and exhaust routed out of the building, but the combustion chamber is shaped like a big heat sink, and there’s a fan blowing over the “heat sink” allowing the heat generated by the diesel combustion to be circulated through your shop without any of the harmful gases. And the diesel air heater puts out a dry heat. The propane heater puts out very humid heat. My wrenches started to rust after I used a propane torpedo heater in my garage.

Installed CO2 detector. It's never gone off. Run a strong fan aimed toward the ceiling every once in awhile to bring down the heat. Get one of those pedestal fans from Harbor Freight and aim it at the ceiling. It will help a lot.

    A good addition to one of those propane heaters is one of those big like 36” barn fans to set behind it a ways and get all the air in the shop circulating otherwise all your hot air just goes right up to the ceiling and stays there. Also put it on the floor and I generally put something under the back of it to almost point it down towards the concrete so you get some radiant heat coming up off the floor.

    The advertised 1300 sq ft ignores the air temp to begin with. The outside temp makes a big difference. They also only talk about square ft and ignore the ceiling height (so did you). If you only had a 8 ft ceiling it would easily heat the area they clam. All the heat in your shop has gone to the roof. I don't need to repeat what everyone else says, but a couple of fans would put the heat down where it will do a lot more good. We have two in our shop and the ceiling isn't as high as yours. Makes a huge difference.

  • @williamstamper442

    Tony don't even fool around with that thing IF you have natural gas or a big propane hot dog looking tank on site, then go to the big box stores this time of year only and get a wall mounted ventless 30,000 BTU heater. It will keep that whole shop about 68 deg and cost about $30-$40 per month. I've spent 55 years in Detroit and my last house turned my insulated and paneling 24x22 garage 75 degrees with a doggy door. 2 dog beds in front of the heater where the thermometer read up to 82 degrees all winter long. The dogs had the biggest dog house ever and LOVED IT. I had an automatic feeder and watering contraption for the time I was single and at work. When home I spent most of my time in the garage anyway, even in the winter. It was T-shirt weather in there soon as you walked in. Maggie the yellow lab would bounce out the doggie door and play in 18inches of snow and have a blast. Come in and get a drink of water then lay down in front of the heat. She and Shadow the black lab/chow mix would snore so loud I had to turn up the stereo.
    You need about 30,000 reliable BTU's for that place of yours. Maybe invest in some insulation later and build some rafter storage with thin 7/16 particle board for your ceiling over your bench and sitting and filming area.
    I copper lined a natural gas tube from an outdoor BBQ charmglow that was already there, I buried it, then black piped it to the heater. Best purchase ever. 20 years ago. I no longer live there since 2022 but this house will eventually get the treatment too.

      @@animoetprudentia2865 Good point, and some air changout is healthy in any structure - code in many cases demands vents for a garage space. Moisture drives: hot to cold, high pressure to low pressure. And mainly, when I say insulate, I mean spray closed cell foam [or use xps kind of sheets] before the pour to prevent heat sinking as weather drops below 50. As for steel laying about, a drum style dehumidifier is brilliant in all conditions - just needs two ducts to outside to provide a regeneration air circuit. If you adjust [intake] dampers right...the dehumidifier can set positive pressure in a space - something in the range of 0.05" to 0.08" wc [doors closed] is fine for general purposes.

    Nice heater, I'll get one. If you have a large (approx 3 ft. diameter) fan made for shops you can circulate the heavy colder air up toward the ceiling where the hot air from the heater is going. That'll help raise up the temperature at the ground level a lot quicker. That heater puts out so much heat, you could use it to fire a hot air balloon.....kits are available online!

    Bunch of good advice here but I want to add that I've found the best heater for a high ceiling is a radiant tube type. It's basically a long metal pipe with a heater on one end (I used natural gas) and a reflector above. Had a 1600 sq ft shop north of NYC in an uninsulated concrete block building. It originally had the classic garage heater blowing down into the space. With that heater the loft would be 80+ degF and down by the floor it would be 50deg. With the radiant the floor would be about 65deg and that heat rises upso my feet would be warm, the tools and cars would be warm so I could keep the thermostat at a lower setting and still be comfortable. Saved a lot of $! PS the radiant heater is also very quiet.

    Make sure the upper roof trusses are insulated and stapled to the trusses then if possible use plastic sheeting to help seal the heat in more . I would if possible go buy a 180,000 btu Beacon Morris or MR heater celing furnace and hang from the rafters and either run a 500 gallon propane tank or if you have a natural gas line on the property you can get tapped into the furnace with the correct gas regulators and the correct jets for the regulator in the furnace and this will heat your shop much better & it will stay warmer . I live in rural Wisconsin and it gets damn cold in the winters and i did this for my shop and it was the best thing ive done to it to have good clean cheap heat . I edited this because you should also have fans between the lower roof trusses to help push the heat back down to the floor to help circulation of the heat more & the reason for the truss mounted heaters is it gives you more room on the shop floor & its out of the way . About the only better thing to do would be to have in floor heating like my buddies shop has that is quite big with a lift & everything needed to work on the hot rods and muscle cars as well as rat rods we work on & build to sell . Welders tig mig & plasma cutter cutting torches hydraulic press 250,000 lb and a lathe plus a down draft paint booth and his shop is partially heated by in floor heat and a 180,000 btu MR heater over head heater and it stays nice and warm like t shirt warm when its 15- 20 minus outside in the winter some years . We both have bad arthritis mostly in our hands and for me once it gets down into the 30s my right hand locks up and quits working so i got to have heat in my shop to work on my stuff or im basically screwed on getting anything done with out heat . Once the day is over i turn the heat down from 65 degrees to 50-55 because all of the metal steel in my shop holds the heat overnight so when I come in the morning the shop warms up fast. I also leave my tool box shelves cracked open so my tools stay warm and wont get any condensation on them by doing this . Your carks bikes tools will thank you for doing this lol because it helps them get fixed or rebuilt quicker during the evil bad blizzard winter man 😆 .

    I agree with your assessment. They work OK for keeping you from freezing to death if it ain't too cold and it's pointed at you. In Minnesota, they're pretty worthless. Friend had one, and we had to point it at the 100 pound tank to keep it from freezing up. So it didn't do us any good working in a 40x80 concrete building that day.
    A wood stove is really the way to go in an uninsulated garage, but that's not always possible.

    I'd build a simple DIY removable cabin to work on winter months. Something around your working bench and big enough to fit one car. The roof could be a wooden frame with fireproof and light material like emergency warm blankets (the silver/golden ones) that you could lower or rise with a pulley. For the two walls you could also build the same kind of removable wooden panels or something fancier like some kind of canvas roll on the wall that you just need to pull. For that cabin size the simplest $10 electric heater would suffice. I used to improvise them simply using painter plastic sheets and they worked amazingly.

    9.88' is 3 meters which makes sense being from West Taiwan (china). Others have pointed out pointing it at a large piece of metal and ceiling fans to blow the heat back down. We used them in house construction and they were good to take the bite out of the cold but it was still cold.

  • @kencooper2059
    @kencooper2059 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Tony - A few things. BTW, HVAC pro here. The square footage rating on it is more for a home application, and even then just an estimate. You're in a poorly insulated building with high ceilings, so you'll need far more heat than a 2500 square foot home would need. Best type of heating for a shop like that is ceiling mounted radiant heaters. Radiant heats objects more than just air, you can feel them almost immediately. If you have one above where you're working, kick it on and within 5-10 minutes it's pretty nice because it's warming your body. Assuming you don't have natural gas there, propane would be the better choice, but you'll need a minimum of a 100 gallon tank outside. I would get about a 100,000 BTU heater of that type, and two overheat would be better still because it's along, skinny space. If not propane, your best bet would be a heat pump from a cost of operation standpoint. But, you'll need a big one. a 5tton unit would only give you about as much heat as that Harbor Freight heater is producing. With your skills, you could install one of the DIY mini-split systems, and you would have some air conditioning as well. But again, overhead radiant is your best bet for just heat. But, make sure you won't flammable vapors in there, or boom.

    I have a double car garage here in Ohio that can get pretty damned cold. I bought this very same heater last winter. It heated OK but as far as fuel consumption goes it sucks. I was lucky to get 4 to 5 hours of heat from a full tank. And as I'm sure you're aware of when your in the shop workin 5 hours is nothing. I could cook through 2 cylinders in a day with no problem. way too much $$$$$$$ for my comfort. This Fall I gave it to my Son and I bought an 80 thousand BTU kerosine torpedo heater from TEMU for $136. It came in less than a week and this thing is awesome! The other day I got 12 hours on one tank running at 62 degrees on the thermostat. It kicks on and off with no problems. It may be a little noiser and have the diesel smell but I dont mind it at all. Its a nice heater for the price.

    The heater you have is basically for a standard 1 to 2 car home garage with an 8 to 9 foot ceiling.

My shop was comfortable but it was in Virginia, not NY, so not as severe in winter. You should consider a hot air furnace. Maybe pick up a used one and put it in a corner somewhere. You need to have some heat on during your off hours to heat up everything in the room and retain some heat in the large metal things.
