The best-looking CARP lake in England

  • English carp lakes don't get much better looking than this place! Follow my fishing at the 17-acre Acton Top Lake, as I tackle it during the spring, summer and autumn of 2019. This stunning syndicate lake is set in the realms of the English countryside, surrounded by wildlife and full of big old carp. I talk about the tactics I employ throughout the year, as well as the ups and downs of my journey. It features playing action, banter and the carp I caught along the way.

    Although the lake isn't technically tidal the moon DOES have an effect on the water. A friend of mine had a brace of 40lb commons at a day-only club lake in Essex, these 2 commons were rarely caught all year but my pal who worked in a tackle shop at the time, booked off 3 days from work with the idea that he stands the best chance of catching one of these big commons around the full moon. The middle day (when the moon was at its fullest) off went his left hand and he had the 2nd biggest common at 40.02 and as he was weighing that fish, the right hand rod went and it was the big girl at 44.04. Now of course this could be coincidence but it sparked a conversation in the shop where he worked and some of the older anglers who had kept diaries going back to the 1980s and it was so apparent that big fish, especially commons, came out around full moon phazes. Thing is Simon, it is impossible to verify if it is 100% factual. It is about as provable as "does God exist or not?" Nobody will ever know for sure but some believe more than others. .... an interesting topic to while away the hours anyway!! All the best Simon.

    • @SimonCrow
      @SimonCrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice info Mattie, thanks for watching. How does the moon HAVE an effect on the water then? I'd be interested to hear the science behind this, let's say if it's a 1 acre pond?? Like I said in the film, just because someone caught a fish on a certain moon phase, doesn't mean it had an effect on the carp. There needs to be conclusive science.

    • @mattiemclean9882
      @mattiemclean9882 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SimonCrow exactly, and it is so hard to prove. There are even theories that because humans are made up of 97%(or there abouts) water in their molecular structure that the moon even has an effect on PEOPLE! Which us why some people go mad around a full moon and that is where the term "lunartic" comes from. I've even read that the moons gravitational pull can have an effect on a bucket of water... I must confess I'm not a scientist, just a humble rap fisherman but it seems to be getting talked about more and more these days . I know Briggsy is not 100% convinced but thjnksxthere may be something in it. It would certainly make a good article if you could get enough scientists, Carp anglers, and people like Tim Paisley and Chris Ball etc who have been around long enough to have valued opinions (I'm sure Hutchy wrote about it somewhere but unfortunately we cant ask him and I cant remember where I read it...! Just to be clear, I'm not convinced either way but it definitely is an interesting topic. Thanks for your time!

    Me and a friend fished our local river last season, one spot he had been prebaiting in the edge we watched multiple carp come in and cautiously feed for about 4 months straight spitting his rig multiple times a session each fish. We had i think a harvest moon last september and we fished our usual spot to which i caught my biggest fish from the river and he also had one, feeling good we moved to his other spot early morning and within 20 minutes he had had one of the wariest fish ive seen feed. Wether the catch was to do with the moon or not who knows but we believed it was. lovely video so far mate as always

    Having fished most of the big meres in Ellesmere i know how hard the lakes can be just to adjust too ,the depths averaging 20ft in the margins and the fact theres so much natural food in them that the carp just dont need or want your bait,theres so much to get used too,i found that strangely the bigger fish tend to be caught on lower protein baits,ie,birdfood type loose textured boilies,i can only put that down too larger fish having slower digestive abilities,i used to work for a bait firm so had plenty of ingredients to mess about with,of course these are only my opinions but it was definitely an edge,low flavour levels ,always an essential oil,plenty of soluble ingredients,BAF sells all you need if your into making your own bait,birdfood such as EMP or dna baits clo which you can get through BAF ,high nucleotide yeast powder liver powder and any fish or yeast or shellfish liquids (not cheap)...nice vid by the way Crowy

    Good vid Simon. About Moon Phases I fish in Cheshire, Flashes & Meres & I can honestly say the 8 to 10 days of the full Moon is poor for fishing these times of the Lunar cycle. But these venues can be incredibly moody at any part of the Lunar Cycle. I put it down to insect hatches which occur on most full Moons throughout the year.

    What is your main reason for usually always fishing tight lines and tips up? Doesn’t that increase the chances of liners/spooking feeding fish?

    thanks for this simon, on the subject of moon phases, i don't believe it's just the tide they effect, there is far more to it than that imo. The main effect is that on light levels because when the moon is full we have the maximum amount of light reflected by the sun, and as we know light has an effect on many areas of life, and more than likely has greater governance over nature outside the domain we exist in as humans, though we are unfortunately constantly bathed in unnatural light, i believe nature is more synchronised with natural light levels and consequently moon phases. It's worth considering that If you want to get the best nights sleep, the science behind doing so tells us we should eliminate as much light as possible to give your brain the messages it needs to sleep helping to produce melatonin, and even the tiniest bit of light in your environment can upset your sleep pattern. I did also hear simon scott say that aquatic insects hatch on a full moon so that is also likely to be another lunar factor in carps feeding habit.

    Regarding moonlight and phases Simon I'm not of the belief it affects fish in lakes as it does the sea for the reason you state....tired which lakes arent. You did however mention the saints and raising light levels this is where I believe full moons come into play with a clear sky ambint light is far better....I'd also water zigs with black foam would likely produce.

    The only way I could imagine moon phases having an effect on carp behaviour would be if certain insect hatches were more prolific during a full moon, I can only find anecdotal evidence of this though and mostly related to trout fishing on running water. Perhaps higher light levels could be an influencing factor on gin clear waters but knowing that moonlight really doesn't penetrate that far into water I'd again have my doubts.
    On the same lines, personally I've never noticed much of a direct correlation between air pressure and fish location/activity, the weather that is associated with highs and lows definitely affects them but the air pressure itself doesn't. Any talk of high air pressure causing our native fish to head to the upper layers because of an effect it has on their swim bladder is a bit of a misunderstanding of fish biology in that all cyprinids have direct control over their swim bladders and can inflate/deflate them as they please. Cyprinids are considered physotomes which means they have a pneumatic duct connecting the digestive tract to the swim bladder, if they want to inflate the bladder and sit higher in the water then they gulp air, if they want to sink they burp or fart the excess air out. As such any change in air pressure would not cause them to rise/sink unwillingly, they could simply adjust pressure to whatever depth they wanted to be at.
    I believe the misunderstanding stems from game and sea anglers who often catch fish which exhibit signs of a grossly swollen swim bladder caused by the fish not being able to vent excess pressure as they experienced sudden pressure change. These fish species are known as physoclistic and rely on gas diffusion in and out of the blood to alter buoyancy and as such can't do it quickly.
    Anyway, not trying to teach a dog to bark but I thought you might find it interesting. I found fish biology fascinating while at college, an understanding of how they're constructed and function really throws a lot of "common knowledge" into serious doubt.

      TjDolHaus86 Love the theories mate, proper science involved in your discussion. Like you I’m still waiting for a really good explanation on moon phases and carp as all I ever hear is folk saying “Well I caught a big common on the full moon!” That’s not much science. It’s a bit like saying I once caught a carp on a Tuesday at 2.15pm... Thanks for watching bud 👍

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SimonCrow It's sort of like how if a particular fish gets caught from a day ticket on a particular bait/rig everyone starts using that same setup and the numbers of captures attributed to that bait/rig increase, it's a self fulfilling prophecy.
      Do they only eat Cell and fall for Ronnie rigs or is it simply that 90% of anglers are using Cell and Ronnie rig? Is this truly the case or do some particularly loud voices on social media make it seem this way? Where is the data coming from?
      If a carp has a reputation for getting caught in a certain area under a full moon then more people will target that area during full moon and the statistical probability of it being captured under these conditions will increase, data that contradicts this trend will also be ignored and another bankside rule is born.

    moon phases are from people from the moon , being a pike angler and a carp angler its hilarious, they reckon the predator fish bite most in the moon phase what a load of rubbish , only predators that hunt in these are lions and other big predators because the prey cant hide as well because the ground is lit up more , thats only my opinion but its logic !!!
