- A 72-hour trip to the historical Orchid Lake in Oxfordshire turns into a red letter day, as I catch 42 fish including one of the best-looking day-ticket carp in the UK, Morgan's at 36lb. I've fished this water on and off for almost thirty years. I talk about what I've learnt during this time, covering best swims and tactics to try as well as which fish are the main targets of the anglers. This is part one of two films on Orchid, the second coming next month when I look at surface fishing and manage to land the biggest fish in the lake known as Delilah.

Great session Si & some awesome fish, I fished orchid & the alamo swim about 20yrs ago but in all honesty I was a little bit out of my depth has I'd only been carp fishing a few yrs, it was like a football pitch in front of there & I just wasn't experienced enough, after watching that I'd love to return & put things right, you usually make it look easy 👍
Yeh it’s a funny lake John, I’ve fished it loads of times and each time I return I go back with a bit more info, defo worth a return trip mate 👍
Hi Simon what is ur carp record in the uk mine is 41lbs 6ounces
56.12 is my UK biggest but it’s not my PB, that’s a 43.6 I caught from Yorkshire from a mega tough day only venue

Loads of Red Kites in south Oxfordshire. I live 10mins from Dorchester and this was one of the main sites for releasing Red Kites. Awesome birds of prey.
Yes it was a Red Kite become pretty common now but I remember going from the Midland all the way to Wales just to see one,great video showing what day ticket waters do hold nice fish
thick with red kites down south I cant go fishing with out seeing one i live in west london and fish within the M25
Another top quality blog. The red kites had a breading progam in Buckinghamshire a few years ago, I'm surprised you didn't see more? They are a daily site for us, even nesting in our garden trees

Well done Si, you have not lost your Orchid touch, right result!!! I'm still working in The Philippines but managed an extended trip back last year, fished Alamo for a month, you had the same amount of 30's in 3 days that I had in the whole month mate😉 Top Angling!

Did you have exclusive access, lake looked devoid of anglers? Great result and some brilliant fish. I went there in 2018, water levels were very low but managed a few bites on a 24hr session. Be lucky 👍
No mate there were other anglers fishing. A couple of well-known anglers fished the Alamo a few days before and blanked. I just timed it right, they were on the munch big time 👍

Well done Simon excellent result mate id love to fish there historic lake I caught one out of pontefract park m8 23 pounder first trip after the big leather that's in there 30 pounder so spend a bit of time there then move on tight lines mate doing a great job 😊👍

Simon I've followed you for years even before there was TH-cam used to read your stories in the magazines. I am now working on the m4 and noticed some big pits spoke to reading district angling phoned the local tackle shop i really do love the look of big pits old lakes with history. I've always fished brickworks and old resivours down my way don't really have a lot of time on my hands with work and family i have to do this for me by myself but would appreciate some advice from you i fish the same bottom rig as you always have I'm not about looking fancy just what works
That rig will catch you carp all over mate. I don’t know much about those lakes so you’ll have to ask locally 👍
Was this a private session. Lake looked very empty. 4 of us fished it the week before. Powleys and the Drum and a double swim over the other side. Was sooooo weedy. Only saw 4 fish come out in the whole lake over the 72 hour session, two of which were from the same swim your in 2 guys from 5 star baits.
No it wasn’t, other anglers were there...two of my mates fished the same swim as me a few days before me and blanked...I just timed it right...that’s carp fishing
