I have watched all four of the videos you have done on painting the panel. You have made me feel like I'm in Highschool auto Ed again, not afraid to give it ago. Once I started growing up I was to afraid to work on my cars for fear of wrecking it, you've shown me at 57, to try it. Thanks. I actually looking at buying a 110.
Hi Shane I had to learn how do painting myself as in the beginning I had no money to pay anyone, then when I got into Land Rovers, I found no one wanted to do them as they were aluminium, so I had to do them myself As you can see I use urethane paint as you can work it once dry- I have a hard time with base coat/clear coat - I do not have a good environment for that, as any dust hinders progress, where as solid colours are pretty easy - and as you can see blending is easy The paint gun was cheap, the orbital was about $75, but the polisher was $150 10 years ago -but paid for itself over and over. The polyester spray filler changes everything - I rushed this video as I had to get the job done and it was -10C outside, but if properly dried, it sands like talc, and very easy to sand, with no reaction to any existing paint or future top coat So have a go! You are never too old - I have a subscriber who rebuilt a steering box with the help on my videos and he’s 75! Mike
Britannica Restorations Mike, if it's ok I would love to give you a car to ask you a couple of questions about buying Defender 110. I live in Canada as well, Burlington Ontario between Hamilton and Toronto.again thanks for the kick.
A few years ago when I was in the UK I went to a dealership and they had a brand new 110 that was metallic black - looked like it had been in a car crash - the black metallic enhanced every body ripple on the vehicle! When I used to paint Defenders they were always white - white does not show panel defects so much Mike
As I learnt after we had ours resprayed about four years ago, Oslo Blue looked really nice initially a beautiful dark blue, almost black in some lights, by Christ it shows up every single little defect. Best thing to do is not stand so close, preferably 40 foot away.
You can only put lacquer on base coat as BC is 'rough' so the lacquer sticks - if you put it on a gloss it would not bond At least that is the way I understand it
Great job Mike better finish than a lot of professional painters over here 👍
Thanks 👍

But just be aware of the fumes - nasty stuff!
MIke
bloody nice job from where I'm stood Mike, thanks for these tips.
Hi!
Yes it is not bad considering.
The problem is with these flat panels is they flex too much when you work them, still, the results were good!
Mike
I'd be more than happy with panels looking like that on my Landy.
