I completely agree that sharing on social media will not hurt an Etsy shop. But as a person who sells on both Etsy and my own website, there's no way I'm sharing an Etsy link over my own site. Etsy gets a cut of my sales because they drive traffic to my products. I'm not about to start doing their job for them AND taking a fee for doing so.
Oh, absolutely! When selling from your own website, Etsy should always be placed on the back burner. I like to think of Etsy as a funnel. When you make a sale, you can invite that buyer to your email list OR even include a coupon in the package that is redeemable on your website. When you cannot direct traffic off of Etsy, you CAN invite shoppers to an email list. Once those shoppers are on your list, you can re-direct them to a personal website - thus, making Etsy the "funnel" that grows your overall brand audience.
@@StarlaMoore For sure! Sorry if I got a bit off topic there. Didn't mean to disagree with anything you said in the video. Thanks so much for this one! It's so hard to know who to trust with TH-cam Etsy advice.
Etsy simply needs to do a monthly reshuffle of who gets to be on the first few pages. Not showing 10times from 1 store in the first page. Really unfair

I’m super guilty of searching for my products on the search bar to see where my products are ranking 😅 I had no idea the searches are tailored to each person. That honestly makes so much sense. I’ve been wondering how a listing that didn’t rank high for me was somehow getting favorites. I’m also frequently adjusting my titles and tags, def going to stop doing that.
As always a great video. I have wondered for years why people didn't have their Etsy link on their social media profiles. Now I know, it's because there are crazies out there giving out bad advice. Half of my sales come from loyal customers who follow me on social media. I wouldn't have those sales otherwise. Thanks for all you do!
Exactly!!! Building a social presence is so important! AND your listing quality scores still get a bump from those sales/positive reviews, even if they came from external traffic!
:) so the only thing I disagrea is information that description is not relevant ;) It is ;) 60% of sales in my store are from offsite ads. And best performing products have best description. Im really curious - what is your opinion about alt text in image options. This is something Im not using properly I think... Two years of selling more than 12 000 product sale ;) if someone is curious 😅
I have the link to my Etsy shop on my social media pages. Why would Etsy give this option if they were going to penalize you for it? It's ridiculous. I like using mine. Thank you for all the great advice you provide! 😊
Hi Starla! You mentioned that it's good to have social media like Pinterest. What is the best way to drive traffic to an Etsy shop via Pinterest? Is it better to post listings on your own Pinterest account or just post them via Etsy's Pinterest account (since they already have 10+ million views)? Thanks for your videos❤
Great tips! I do have a question. I opened up an Etsy stop in retro/boho wall printables bout 1.5 weeks ago. So far I have 30 listings and (i think) Ive done a thourough SEO research. Yet I see some of them aren't performing well. Do I wait 60 to 90 days or do I leave it and give Etsy time to get to know my shop?
Comment the final SEO mistake noted in the video - I was actually penalized by Etsy for increasing sales to my store using the Share & Save program. The jump in sales caused Etsy to be suspicious and place a 3-month Reserve (hold on funds) on my account. I challenged it, asking them them to view the order history, as every order I brought in from offsite shows a green badge - roughly 80% of my orders. Etsy wasn't interested. It seems they only think the spike is suspicious, instead of their own incentive working properly. So it does seem to happen.
Your videos are always on point and never disappoint.Thank you for making this video! ❤Once again, much appreciated!! Despite following your advice to prevent those SEO mistakes, I am not seeing any movement in my shop. I was thinking if I needed to set up a new shop because my current shop is about 1.5 years old and I didn't do anything with it at first. Is it true that Etsy will boost your new shop or is this merely smoke? I'd appreciate your comments on this.
Etsy does not boost new shops. They boost new listings. Keeping your existing shop is a safer bet because Etsy deactivates most new shops and it can take a while to get the shop re-activated.

Hello starla, i would have a question updating a bestseller listing. I know you suggest to not touch bestseller listings. I have a couple of them but the problem is that i would like to update the images and options offered within that listing to better match the other, newer listings in my shop. That means i would change the listing image and add another color option. To do so i would need to change - image, description, price and variations - i would not need to change title and tags - as i know you said not to do so . My question - is it better to dublicate the listing and optimize the image +variations in a new dublicate listing or would it be OK to change description, image, price and variation within the bestsellerlisting? Thank you❤
Changing description, image, price, and variations does not affect the algorithm. However, sometimes changing an image might cause it to look different in search and cause it lose momentum. If you want to change the image on a new listing, I would suggest do A/B testing where you copy the listing and update the image and then see which does better.
Your Etsy SEO Mistake #6 has me wondering if customers in the USA will find my listings as my POD shop location is in Canada (my shipping location is the US though). So will the US sellers have an advantage over a seller outside of the US since most sales come from the US?
The location of your shop is just ONE of many factors that play into your ranking. Yes, when just comparing shop location to shop location, a US shop's item will appear higher in search for a US customer. However, again, that is just a single factor. Other things such as your item's title, tags, and descriptions as well as you shop's reviews and your item's quality listing score also are factored in. It is definitely possible to sell to US customers if located in Canada. ;-)
@@StarlaMoore My shop is new, with no sales, reviews or anything else. It sounds like Etsy ads are my only option as a new shop to get seen by US shoppers in a meaningful way. At least there is that option, which may help get me what you have listed to give me a fighting chance.
Jeez I still remember the "#1 Etsy Consultant" saying how "Etsy is penalizing you" for sharing the shop on social media. Just a clickbaity way of putting it. Basically you pay etsy fees anyway so why not use your own website was his logic. But of course most people won't have their own website or just don't wanna do that, so of course you wanna do social media if etsy is realistically at least the medium term approach! PS: For those of you who know the Etsy Consultant. What happened to Lou? - Oh, she closed her Etsy shop - guess all that baseless no-research plow-ahead-with-no-strategy mindset didn't pay off lol.
Yeah, it drives me crazy when Etsy coaches completely gaslight sellers who aren't at the point of opening their own websites yet. When you HAVE a website, I absolutely agree that external traffic funneling should be directed to your own platform when possible. The helps to build stronger brand awareness in the long run. But not everyone has a website. Not everyone wants a website. And for the sake of topical consistency, Etsy coaches should expect that a majority of their audience will be made up of sellers who primarily sell on Etsy. The idea that Etsy penalizes sellers for sharing their shop links is completely baseless. We've personally confirmed with Etsy that this is absolutely not the case. Even with direct confirmation, several coached would rather believe that Etsy is lying to all of us. This information is publicly available in the Seller Handbook... a resource that many Etsy TH-camrs clearly don't take the time to read.

I should never tweak a listing that’s already doing well? What if I’m changing the tags to be more relevant with trending data? I’ve ready tweaked my most popular listings 😭 is it over for them now or?
If you make a change, you never know exactly what it was being found for previously and may make a change that has a negative effect without realizing it. Do you by chance use eRank's track changes tool? If so, then that will show you what they were before. And changes do not necessarily mean it will ruin a best seller. There is just always a chance that it will so why risk it with something that is already selling well, is my thoughts.
Ha I was just about to type conversion rate 😂 What do you think about sharing your shop on TH-cam in particular? I noticed you do and obviously you know a lot about Etsy stats. I’m just about to start a TH-cam channel where the Etsy shop will be a case study, but I don’t expect my viewers would be likely to be the target customers. Is it a complete myth then that having a load of nosey non-buyers impacts CTR type stats and has a bad effect on the listing? Or is the only real practical issue that they might steal my tags rather than doing their own research? Right now I’m a brand new seller with a brand new shop and only 10 sales.
❤ question… I have only 600 listings… and I have since 2016 have been using attributes such as Christmas & birthday… do I need to delete these attributes or just in future listings leave blank if not Christmas themed/birthday themed. I sell vintage jewelry .. etc. thanks Katie ❤😊
600 is actually a LOT of listings. 🙂 To answer your question, no. You don't need to go update all your past attributes. I would just make it a point to leave them blank I'm the future.
Hello Starla! Could you tell me what I should do with my listings on Etsy? They sell well according to my shop stats, but after watching your video, I realized that all the attributes are wrong. I put Christmas attributes for products not related to Christmas. If I delete those attributes, will it help improve SEO, or will it hurt my sales? Thanks! ❤️
If the listings are selling, leave them. 💛 At least until after the holidays when few people will be searching for Christmas items. I recommend always being very careful with anything that is selling well. Just in case. 🙂
If selling digital products what’s the best way to get people to opt into email list. Do I add a word document with the digital file that has the link to my landing page? It seems like too many steps for the buyer. I’ve heard of everbee email but trying not to do that for now since it’s not free and I can’t afford the monthly payments yet. Thanks in advance
Starla, @3:10 you mention how Etsy ranks an ad with a "Listing Quality Score". Does eRank or any other utility make this LQS transparent to be viewed by the seller so we can know which ads need to be improved upon or is that kept secret only to Etsy? Being a long time member, I know eRank will give suggestions to what it thinks Etsy may list higher or lower in the way of tags, etc but just curious if our actual Etsy LQS is available for us to see by Etsy or any other third party company?
I just want to clarify, since you mentioned "ads". Ads are not what I was referring to in this video. Just your normal listings. Unfortunately there is no way to view a listing quality score. This is a private and internal metric that Etsy's algorithm utilizes for ranking purposes, but there is no possible way to obtain this data.
@@StarlaMoore Thanks for the clarification Starla. I was refrancing what we are selling and is obviously listed in Etsy so was using the term Ads but meant to be the same as a Listing. Aren't they one in the same?
No, an Etsy "Ad" is an actual paid point of positioning, where you're paying for an ad slot on an Etsy search page. Etsy ads and Etsy listings have completely different algorithms.
@@StarlaMoore Oh, got it. When I was brand new to Etsy roughly 9 years ago I think, I was allocating $2,000/mo to Etsy Ads and being positioned up front. Etsy used to be very transparent and allowed the seller (me) to even be very specific where those advertising dollars went so I could say "Max $200 to one product and Max $50 to another, etc" but as you know that stopped a couple years ago and I haven't paid for any Etsy advertising ever since because of it. I need control so ever since they did that, I repositioned my advertising dollars into external advertising, Google Adwords, even paid Pinterest, paid Twitter, paid Facebook, etc ads but no paid etsy ads at all. Thanks for the clarification of what you meant. I personally believe it's a waste to advertise with Etsy now and rely on organic SEO, proper and attractive ads, paying for top end analytic research (I'm a long time erank member as an example but also pay for 5 other analytical research companies to get really good feedback and information to use. External advertising is key for me and where I have far more control on my advertising dollars.
So in the photos on printify I can see that one of the blankets from pic the gift has a tag that says made in China. Does anyone know if other ones have tags like that? I don't want to print American flag stuff with a tag obviously.. I specifically was gonna use the thicker white Sherpa. I know I should order a sample but still
@starlamoore I have a question. In doing keyword research I have seen a lot of misspelled words, for example...coffee. I have seen it spelled co ffee, c offee, coff ee, etc... and those spellings have a lot of searches, clicks, etc... Should we consider using them or nah? I can see shoppers hurredly typing their searches and misspelling them so it kinda makes sense. Just curious.
Etsy tells us not to do this. When a customer mis-types a word, Etsy search corrects the search. So never use a misspelling. You won't see any traffic from it.
I agree with everything you say, apart from the last one 😂😂😂 might be as you said, just something that happened to me, and not a general fact. I am in HAA, so I do agree with everything you say and I do run my shop by what you say 😅😅 What happened to me was I had an item that was selling well. I made a video on TikTok and sponsored it and I included my link to that specific listing. It had about 17 views or something but no one bought it...and after that no more sales 🙄 barely any views.. Do you think is a coincidence?
Etsy has directly confirmed with us that this is not the case. So I dare say this was likely a coincidence. There are SO many factors that contribute to the rank of a listing. I would need significantly more information to be able to give you an educated guess - but I will say that on a marketplace of 9 million shoppers, 17 inbound clicks are likely not enough to shake the boat, even if external traffic did negatively impact rank.
What do I do if I changed the titles of etsy listings that were doing well and now they are bringing in no sales? Do I change them back? Do I wait and see if it improves? I really fked up ):
Yes, you can make updates on your descriptions without affecting the search algorithm. The description is like that final comparison that Etsy might do if they have (for example) two items that are identical in every other way and the person specifically has asked for the item to be blue and only one has blue in the description.
Great information! Question, on an Etsy listing in the photos section, do you fill out the Alt Text next to the image. On Etsy it says that this can help with SEO. Haven’t seen anyone talk about this.
Alt Text is an accessibility tool that allows visually impaired shoppers to view your listings through the utilization of screen readers. I have a video covering this topic but offhand I'm not sure which one. I'll try to look for it. In the meantime, Alt-text should be filled out for the purpose of assisting visually impaired shoppers, rather than for keyword stuffing. I recommend sitting with your product and pretend that you're describing it to a blind person. Features like the size, color, texture, and weight can all be covered in your Alt-text.
I would add alt text on any image that has unique elements representing the item. For example, you might label the thumbnail, "Glossy white ceramic mug depicting an image of a gray watercolor tabby cat with green eyes". If the second photo is of a woman holding that mug, you might say, "Caucasian woman with brown hair smiling while holding a steaming white ceramic mug depicting an image of a gray watercolor tabby cat with green eyes".
HAA is not catered to any specific industry, as I teach a foundational knowledge of marketing psychology, SEO, funnel building, and brand psychology, which can absolutely be applied to POD. My own shop that I use as an example in the program is a POD shop. There will not be information specifically tailored for POD sellers, but the lessons taught are universal. We have tons of successful POD sellers in HAA. 😊 If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to let me know!
Hello Starla, Thank you for your advice. I made the mistake with Christmas Day. What a relief that you enlightened me 😂. But which is better? Should I share my product from etsy or my own online shop on social media? Or both? Am I losing money if I don't link my etsy shop on Instagram? But I want to get people on my website to convert there.
You can link to both. Some people feel more confident and comfortable shopping on a platform such as Etsy instead of a direct website. Others prefer to shop from direct website.
Your information is very useful, but honestly, I get tired of listening, it’s too much power and intonation dips in your way of relaying the information. What’s easy and clear to you, takes time for people to understand and process. And the longer it takes us to comprehend, the longer it takes to make a decision to buy your product, which I am sure is great. Please make it a bit slower 🌷
Speed controls are available on every video if you need to slow them down. I cannot change the way I speak, unfortunately. This is my voice and presentation style, crafted over years of being an educator. It is unique to me and I am proud of my format. I understand that it is not for everyone and that is okay. Hopefully you can still find value by utilizing speed controls in the bottom right of each video, as well as utilizing the closed captioning (which I type for every video by hand to ensure it is correct).

It does! If you've ever had a paid eRank account in the past, the system will not recognize the membership, and you'll need to utilize a different email address. There's a bit of an order that must be taken in order to claim the free membership as eRank's system is not designed for free trials. - From this page, you first register for your free account (or login to an existing free account): erank.com/a/haa - Once you're logged in, make sure you have a shop connected to your account. You can do this via the small gear shaped icon in the top right corner of your screen. A shop must be connected for the trial to be applied. - Return to the 30 day trial page once you've logged in/connected your shop.

Definitely check out this video though: th-cam.com/video/lpFFamKTTmI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4zFRvb4cBvFVNEVy
To answer your question, no.
Thanks ❤️
I am in HAA, so I do agree with everything you say and I do run my shop by what you say 😅😅
What happened to me was I had an item that was selling well.
@@StarlaMoore That makes sense. 😅 When you put it this way...😅 for me at that time 17 views was a lot, but yes, I haven't seen the big picture 😁
What do I do if I changed the titles of etsy listings that were doing well and now they are bringing in no sales? Do I change them back? Do I wait and see if it improves? I really fked up ):
If you have the info to change them back, then change them back. It is always best to not touch a listing that is selling. :-)
Hanks Starla th😮at was ver6 helpful 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
I'm always afraid to touch my description as well, so that is safe to make updates on??
Yes, you can make updates on your descriptions without affecting the search algorithm. The description is like that final comparison that Etsy might do if they have (for example) two items that are identical in every other way and the person specifically has asked for the item to be blue and only one has blue in the description.
You're a star thank you!! @@StarlaMoore
Would you do this with all the photos on 1 item or just the thumbnail?
I would add alt text on any image that has unique elements representing the item. For example, you might label the thumbnail, "Glossy white ceramic mug depicting an image of a gray watercolor tabby cat with green eyes".
If the second photo is of a woman holding that mug, you might say, "Caucasian woman with brown hair smiling while holding a steaming white ceramic mug depicting an image of a gray watercolor tabby cat with green eyes".
Great. Thank you so much!!!
Do you have a course for POD sellers?
HAA is not catered to any specific industry, as I teach a foundational knowledge of marketing psychology, SEO, funnel building, and brand psychology, which can absolutely be applied to POD. My own shop that I use as an example in the program is a POD shop. There will not be information specifically tailored for POD sellers, but the lessons taught are universal.
We have tons of successful POD sellers in HAA. 😊
If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to let me know!
Thank you Starla!
You're so welcome!
I’m planning on taking the course!
Hello Starla,
Thank you for your advice.
One of my best sellers doesn't have all tags filled out, so would it be ok to add more tags without editing any of the already existing ones?
Adding tags shouldn't have a negative impact on the listing - but always proceed with caution. Especially if the listing is selling daily.
Alright, thank you!
Thanks so much for all the interesting insights!
@@StarlaMooreI forgot about the speed control, ty. I’ll try to adjust to your way of speaking, thank you for sharing all the info. I am new on Etsy and would like to really get to know this platforms, because I have a wonderful product and know my clients, just need placement everywhere possible 😎
I bought an etsy course from a TH-camr, and I swear they copied some of my listings 😢
Please drop a name. Keep others from being scammed. I wish you all the best in your business!🙏
No way!!! That's freaking terrible! Feel free to email me at starla@handmadealphaacademy.com if you want to name-drop. I won't share the information with anyone but I do like to keep these bad coaches on my radar in the event that I'm ever offered to work with them.
Hello ma'am I was created etsy account but But I haven't received any order yet and I don't even views and visit what to do help me 🙏
Unfortunately, this is a question I cannot answer quickly, as someone who dedicates their life to producing content on these subjects. There are an unlimited number of ways to grow on Etsy.
You can find 100s of videos on my TH-cam channel to help with the various areas of running a successful shop, including SEO, pricing, branding, marketing, photography, traffic driving, and more.
I also have several free courses and resources, which can be found here: bit.ly/EtsyAlphaFreebies
I hope these resources help! :)
Ma'am plz.. Tell me Can I run two accounts from one laptop? Etsy
Absolutely!
3 months complete but I haven't received my order yet, what should I do?
If you permit, I can send you the link of my shop.
Does the 30 free days of erank pro link in the Etsy seo noodles video not work anymore?
It does!
If you've ever had a paid eRank account in the past, the system will not recognize the membership, and you'll need to utilize a different email address.
There's a bit of an order that must be taken in order to claim the free membership as eRank's system is not designed for free trials.
- From this page, you first register for your free account (or login to an existing free account): erank.com/a/haa
- Once you're logged in, make sure you have a shop connected to your account. You can do this via the small gear shaped icon in the top right corner of your screen. A shop must be connected for the trial to be applied.
- Return to the 30 day trial page once you've logged in/connected your shop.
@@StarlaMoore yes I was able to get it thank you so much can’t wait to use it
