I'd like to see more in general pertaining to shops that focus on digital downloads/printables. Also if you make updates to a digital file is it best practice to just update the current listing or make a new listing for the updated version?
Hi Starla :) Possible video... (maybe you already covered this but)...1) How important is posting all 10 photos for each Etsy listing? What if the product is simple and 10 photos seem a little redundant. How to diversify photos of a simple item. ps. I suck at taking photos. Is natural light better? My photos have the worst lighting and I use 3 different lamps from all sides. 2) How important is having a video for your product? Does having a video for item... change the visibility that etsy give it? Thank you!! :) Enjoy your videos! They are helpful! :)
I’d love more insight on digital products, and how to batch create them! I also think it’d be super interesting to learn the process you went through to get officially licensed to sell certain authors’ merch.
Hi Starla, as a seller from Europe I want to start another shop on Etsy. First question I get is "which do you want to be the base language of your shop? Be careful - you will not be able to change it later". The default option is my country's language. However, Etsy coaches suggest that if my main group of interest is USA, should I put English there. I anyway want to type everything in English. There is a catch here: when selecting English, my tags can be only 20 signs long. In my language Etsy allows me to have them as long as 30 signs each. Huge difference! For that alone I'd rather have that second store of mine in my own langugage. What do you think? Is the visibility "boost" for American market worth setting the language to English and loosing extra tag? Sorry, maybe it is a very specific question and maybe difficult to answer straight away, but you are the only person I can think of having some thoughts about it.
Unfortunately there is no way to accumulate a listing quality score for OOAK listings and vintage items. However, through good customer reviews, you can build your overall "shop score", known as your Customer and Marketplace Experience Score. Sadly, this score will not be as impactful as listing quality scores though, making it very hard for OOAK sellers to rank in search without external advertising.
Hi Starla! There's a glitch in the Etsy platform for Canadian sellers. I'm not sure if US sellers are affected, but I realized that when you edit your listing and save it, for whatever reason, the global price does not reflect anymore. I had two sales from the UK and it only charged them my domestic price. To solve the issue for now as per Etsy agent, after editing your listing, go back and check if the global pricing changed to your domestic pricing. If yes, then, click off the pricing tab, and then save. Then go back, and add your global pricing and save again. Its a pain in the butt but I wanted to share in case sellers were having this issue.
That's been a 'glitch' for a very long time now, over a year. Etsy's not going to fix it any time soon because they don't care about it. The better solution is just to set local shipping as free, add that to the price, then charge overseas whatever extra it cost above what you hid. So if local is 10 and o/s is 20, charge 'free' for local and +10 to your listing price, then charge 10 for o/s. If your product can handle hiding all but $6 in the US shipping do that. I've heard several Canadian sellers say they're being lectured to offer the 6/lower even though it's only supposed to be US domestic.
I would like to know how to use email marketing on Etsy because I heard that placing it on the banner as a QR code isn't allowed. I would love you share more about that, and thank you for the amazing content, as always! ❤
I'd love tips for sellers of OOAK items like creators of original artworks, or sellers of vintage items where each item is inherently slightly different than the next. Info such as : should we reuse sold out listing? How can we utilize listing quality scores regarding sales if we don't have multiples of that item to sell?
Idea! I’d love to see how to put together the info cards for our listing photos. How would you make them, what info would you put there for different product types?
I would love tips on how to streamline my packaging/shipping process. How were you handling that back when you were selling high volumes of jewelry? I find that if I have more than 2 packages to ship in one day, I am afraid that I'll mix up them up and send things to the wrong person. Also, I simply spend too much time prepping my packages! Any tips?
I love your swipe files and it's helped me build my own messaging/touch points but it's only focused on positive interactions. With the volume of sales and external factors of Q4, i want to be prepared for how to handle situations that aren't positive. (Thankful that hasn't been my situation yet) but I would want to have the tools/knowledge to know how to handle negative situations and where they may arise (reviews? messages? do they contact etsy directly? Social media comments? Etc) that i need to keep an eye out for.
I would love a video focusing on this new $6 shipping thing and what it means for those who are 'excluded' like calculated shipping or overseas sellers. I can't get anyone to understand how being excluded is a BAD thing and it's my considered opinion that this could actually be a death blow to non US sellers. Also, things to expand on from the points you mentioned here: On point 1, one of Etsy's recent articles said of tags 'if you can't imagine someone typing it into Google, don't use it as a tag' - to me this suggests repeat keyword is a better strategy now, and that broad matching might be weaker than it once was and 'nonsense tags' are dead. I'd like to see a video on someone A/B testing the repeat vs nonsense theory because right now I don't have any faith in broad match. (by nonsense I mean tags like 'sister bestie aunt' to cover 'gift for' broad matches) On point 2, I've been trying to hammer 'keyword authority' into sellers for years (I coach privately and on the forums) - I'm 100% convinced this is why a lot of vintage stores don't do that well, especially lately. Converting regularly for a set group of keywords is the single best way to rank if you can only sell an item once. Many vintage stores are 'a little something for everyone' and it severely weakens their SEO. If a vintage seller says 'I sell a little something for everyone' the sentence should continue to say 'who loves [niche]'. On Point 3 - new listing boosts depend on the listing already having some quality score including policies and photos. Handbook article 1289139008351 details this in their FAQs - buried wisdom! I don't think people realise how much needs to be harnessed when you put out a new listing, so maybe a video on how to optimize that first 20c run would be good.
Can you do a video on tips for product videos for etsy? I often get stuck on this topic when doing a listing :) and I am sure others feel the same way. Best wishes, Sheshines Creations
I'll add it to the list. In the meantime, I would check out Kristina Nicole's channel and search for her videos on doing product videos. She has some great tips and tricks. www.youtube.com/@bykristinanicole
Okay, so this might not be something you can talk about, but I would love to learn more about customer "pain points" for people who sell art on POD products. I know that when selling to customers, you want to sell them something that fills a need of sorts. (Not sure if I'm explaining this correctly). But I'm wanting to learn about how to come up with ways to market art to fill that hole in the customer's life. (For context, I sell aesthetic bookish products for fantasy/romance readers in a unique style that I can only say is reminiscent to stain glass.)
Another idea, I'm using good resolution in photos but ETSY keeps telling me to improve my photo quality, and I'm guessing my photos get reduced in quality when I was doing all the steps to get the mockups made or saved from Printify or my own files. I also struggle with the work flow after creating. Creating is easy, posting is hard. I thought I would get faster at the listing part, but the back and forth of getting everything working and all the correct selections to be automated is not feeling very automated and I worry about my listings not working. Can you chat about your listing workflow? or file management? What images do I need to keep once a listing is out? Thanks for all the brilliant advice I've been watching on your videos!
I'm not sure if you already spoke about POD and shipping on ETSY but can you explain the best way to manage shipping if someone buys multiple products.
If you use the POD shipping setup when you publish the products, they handle multiple purchases from the same vendor. When the items that they purchase are from different POD vendors, then I just let the shipping price of each add together and don't discount the shipping because it's not discounted for me. I hope that helps.
This is my first Q4 and I know to be mindful about sharing my cut-off holiday shipping dates. I'm wondering what I need to be focused on (listing types, promotions, external traffic, etc) to continue sales beyond that date and into the new year. What do I need to know now to be prepared to keep my shop successful once Christmas shopping slows.
Social media is a great resource to continue driving traffic to your shop. Also, maybe consider a New Year's sale. If your items work for other holidays coming up in the 1st quarter such as Valentine's Day, start promoting them December. Keeping ahead of holidays, etc is key to maintain momentum. However, there will be slow times for shops at some point during the year.
I would appreciate a vid on social media, like how to best use Pinterest and insta .. I have accounts but not getting a following. It's like shouting to myself in the basement (and I don't even have a basement lol😂)
Have you tried out my free 30-day Instagram Challenge? You can find it here: bit.ly/EtsyAlphaFreebies It's a great way to get started and/or get organized with social media. It gives you ideas about what to post and when. Some Alphas just use the 30 day layout over and over again for their social media postings.
Hi Starla! Thanks for these tips. I hope I didn’t miss you speaking in this before. If so, sorry in advance. But I’ve been wondering what is the best use of the ATL Text box in the photo edit/upload section. I’ve just been copying and pasting my titles there recently. Most are blank. I’m questing if Etsy put that that there, I should be using it. Thanks!
Oh this is a good one. Normally, ALT text is used as image description for users with vision impairments. Hence it should contain a description of what's on the picture (e.g. gold earrings with green stones). However, google claims that ALT text is also used by search engines to rank images. Interesting, if Etsy is using that...
@@halflink yes, it’s in the photo edit box. I just started copying and pasting my title but now wondering if I should be more descriptive as my title never used up all the allowed characters.
@@ShereeSchattenmann Just looked at it. It contains a link to the Help article. The article explains what ALT text is (description for blind/visually-impaired people) and it looks like it does help with SEO as well. However, this help article is also very clear that just copying listing title will not help with SEO (because the title is already used in SEO). What would help is if you add a description of what's on the image (I gave you an example and help article gives examples too). Basically, you can put more keywords into ALT text field (though they should be linked to what's on the image) and Etsy's search engine will 'see' them and consider in ranking your listing.
Definitely do not copy your titles into your ALT text. This is a huge disservice to those with visual impairments who rely on Alt text in order to shop online. I've linked a segment where I cover this topic in a previous video. Clicking this link should lead to the exact time stamp where I answer the question. I also provide an example of what Alt text looks like for a shopper who is blind: th-cam.com/video/mg5U6-KIKqU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qlUKPpNVmbvOx7Hz&t=262
@@StarlaMoore Thank you! I rarely open the full photo edit page and I see the tab to read more. Thank you for the video link. I’ll watch that video and start using this feature! I appreciate your help.
I started my first etsy shop with children's things a month ago (nothing sold yet). But now I'm not sure if it was a good choice. A lot of videos and resources mention various trendy products that are good to include in an Etsy shop - mugs, tumblers, calendars, sweatshirts, glasses, etc. But my shop is focused completely differently. Should I try to start a second etsy shop? I'm at the beginning and there are so many things. Thank you very much for your reply.
Hi! I would like to know more about when renewing seasonal listings as I think I'm doing it all wrong. How to get the correct moment. For example, if I have printable items how I should calculate when to renew items as I do let them to expire as I do not see much sense to keep them all year long ...
Listings renew every four months. You can turn on automatic renewal, if it's a product you list all year. However, if it is a seasonal listing, I would list it 3-4 before the holiday/season and make a calendar reminder of some type to renew a week before it expires, if neeeded.
@Angie33084 I've already created a video on this topic. The issue isn't algorithmic, though I understand how it may seem this way due to slow sales. But ALL e-commerce is experiencing low traffic right now due to the US elections, which historically impact global commerce. It happens every election year. Unfortunately the recent Etsy updates lined up with the drop in traffic, which is leading sellers to believe it's an algorithm issue. This likely is not the case.
I'd like to learn more about Instagram links and the restriction on links in bio you mentioned in another video. I would like to understand why it possibly limits your growth and how to work around it without spending a lot of money.
There is no restriction on having links in your bio. I believe Instagram allows for up to 2, but you can use an app such as LinkTree (which I believe is still free) or Metricool's Smartlinks to create a landing page with as many links as needed. However, it seems that less and less people are taking the time to look at the links in a person's or business's bio. Link added to a post description are not clickable on Instagram and therefore, do not serve a purpose because you have to copy and paste into a browser to be able to access. The easier the process for the viewer to get to the link's location, the more likely that they will be to check it out. I hope that helps!
I would love to know how to run deals for a particular listings (lets say for Thanksgiving gifts ) when creating POD products in Printify and selling on Etsy. What is the best way to do it without going one by one? Thanks a lot!!!
Tags don't need to make sense because all words within your tags will be broad matched. I cover this topic a bit more in this video: th-cam.com/video/thltXNDZaDw/w-d-xo.html
Finally JUST got my 1st sale after 5 weeks open, and was reminded I pay to my POD shop BEFORE getting paid by the seller. What happens with a giant order? I have to cover that until paid? I understand it will build but how much do you have to keep aside for covering this as you grow big? Also what set up do I need to keep track of all this, I want to set myself up from the start. Any tips?

Hi Starla I have a question regarding the boost that is given to a new listing. I’m looking to save time in redoing the attribute section and using a copy of an active listing to list a new product, does this count towards a boost that you get on a new listing, since technically it will be activated or because it’s a copy it does not count? Thank you
A copy is a new listing. Think of a "copy" similar to using a template of an old listing. None of the sales history, listing quality score, or reviews will carry over to this new listing. BUT you will get the benefit of the new listing boost.
If our listings get an initial boost to see how shoppers interact with them and Etsy bases their quality scores on this timeframe, what about seasonal listings that we list months in advance? We’ve been told we need to get those listings out early so the algorithm knows what they’re about before the rush of shoppers start looking for them but if they get listed when shoppers aren’t looking for those items yet, won’t that hurt our quality score?
Shoppers start looking early at holiday items and favorite them to be able to find them when they are ready to shop. If you are getting views, then that is positive for your quality score. It gives you the chance to get a quality score before the shopping season. Also, make sure you are using Social Media to drive traffic to your shop, too!
It's been discussed many times in various videos (on this channel and others). It all boils down to what's important to you. Yes, offering free shipping would rank you higher in search (how much higher? It's impossible to say because your starting position in the rank would depend on many other factors, so it might be that you are not even gaining any real advantage), but it would also hurt your profit margins (you can include shipping cost into your listing cost to mitigate for that, but that might discourage some potential buyers as they would see higher initial price). There are pros and cons. I personally decided not to offer free shipping. If your items are small, light and inexpensive, shipping cost would be peanuts and buyers wouldn't mind paying it on top of the cost of the listing (it actually might even encourage them to buy more, to make shipping cost worthwhile). If your items are large and expensive (or small and expensive), then shipping cost would be dwarfed by the price of the goods (if customers are already prepared to pay X for your goods, it is unlikely that delivery charge - if it's reasonable - would make them abandon the cart).
Use what works for you. Currently, Etsy has said that they will give priority to listings that have shipping that is less than $6 for US Shipping within the US.
I keep seeing mixed answers on titles and the tags needing to match exactly. Some say they should, others say they need to be synonyms of those title phrases or similar, but not exact ?
Etsy specifically tells us in the Ultimate Guide to Search that the most important works should be both in our title AND tags. Everything in your title should also be in your tags - but not everything in your tags needs to also be in your title. :)
How important is it to have your Etsy shop organized with like products together? I spend waaayyyy too much time rearranging so that it looks cohesive. Then when I see my shop on my phone, it’s a jumbled mess! Do buyers really even go to a shop to buy? Is it even worth my time to organize my shop for desk top?
Hello Starla! I have 130 listings and do not get views! All my listings almost are on 0 visits and I am selling Christmas ornaments. I have contacted Etsy support and they said I am not search suppressed. Also my ad Budget is always 25 dollar,.it does not goes up...how can I increase visibility?!?!

Hi lovely people 🥰 I’m looking for some tips! I really want to know what everyone recommends? Open a shop with one product focus for different groups of people or open a shop with different products for one group of people? Thank youu for the replies 😘😘
@@amandakandell977 Not necessarily. It depends on the product. For example, if you're selling greeting cards or wall art (posters, photographs), it's broadly one product (I mean cards are one product and wall art is one product), but it might (and should probably) target more than one group of people.
Unfortunately this is how SEO works on pretty much any platform (including TH-cam). If there is a search bar, that search bar is connected to an algorithm that relies on the words we use in our title/tags in order to determine what the item is and who should see it.

You can find it here: bit.ly/EtsyAlphaFreebies
It's a great way to get started and/or get organized with social media.
Hi Starlay, greet you from Germany!
Can you guys address the big algorithm change from October 1 and how a huge portion of us sellers have seen a major decline in views and sales?
@Angie33084 I've already created a video on this topic. The issue isn't algorithmic, though I understand how it may seem this way due to slow sales. But ALL e-commerce is experiencing low traffic right now due to the US elections, which historically impact global commerce. It happens every election year. Unfortunately the recent Etsy updates lined up with the drop in traffic, which is leading sellers to believe it's an algorithm issue. This likely is not the case.
@@StarlaMoorethank you for the reply! My sales have never been so slow in 7 years 😩
Thank you 😊
I'd like to learn more about Instagram links and the restriction on links in bio you mentioned in another video.
Hello Starla! Please do you know if I can take my Etsy reviews and added them into my own website?
I would ask the customers that gave you the review if it's okay if you use their review other places.
@ thank you!
So do the tags have to make sense? Or can I just put as many different words as I can fit into a tag?

Is it important to do free shipping on all listing? I know Etsy pushes us to do it but would love some feedback :)
So I can make tags like:
"Gift for"
"her him mom dad boss"
and get 5 matches? That's what I do. I want to get this verified as being correct or not.
You technically can, yes! I discuss this a bit more in-depth in this video: th-cam.com/video/thltXNDZaDw/w-d-xo.html
There are so many factors that could be taking place. I highly recommend checking out my free SEO toolbox. There are several SEO courses inside, including a video that explains how to check to make sure your SEO is working: bit.ly/EtsyNoodle
Hi! just sharing an idea maybe you could make videos on how you would improve an etsy store, kind of like helping out a friend. I plan on openning an etsy store soon I might need help from an expert
I have lots of videos on helping your improve your Etsy shop on my channel. Here's a good one from recently: th-cam.com/video/1Vss_67_Ok8/w-d-xo.html
You can also take a look at my playlists to find the specific thing that you want to work on. ;-)
Whats the point of working on our Tags, since etsy no longer displays our own tags, and has replaced our own tags with their own irrelevant tags.
Tags (keywords) are still what is used to show your items when customers search.
Hi lovely people 🥰 I’m looking for some tips!
I really want to know what everyone recommends?
Open a shop with one product focus for different groups of people or open a shop with different products for one group of people?
Thank youu for the replies 😘😘
You should focus on different products for one group of people. It is the group of people that you are marketing to.
I cover this topic in this video: th-cam.com/video/5YkBRCDzkcY/w-d-xo.html
@@StarlaMoore thank you for your reply ❤️
@@amandakandell977 Not necessarily. It depends on the product. For example, if you're selling greeting cards or wall art (posters, photographs), it's broadly one product (I mean cards are one product and wall art is one product), but it might (and should probably) target more than one group of people.
Integrations please.
I’d feel better if the title was just a title, not a taggable thing.
Unfortunately this is how SEO works on pretty much any platform (including TH-cam). If there is a search bar, that search bar is connected to an algorithm that relies on the words we use in our title/tags in order to determine what the item is and who should see it.
