Thoroughly enjoyed your Faroe Islands trip! Being faroese myself, regarding the fees, there's another factor you didn't mention; sheep walk these lands, and multitudes of people constantly walking through the land does disturb them and makes them accustomed to people, which isn't what you necessarily want when it comes time to herd them. My father being a shepherd with land (no fees) struggles constantly even with locals to just get them to respect this fact, as well as being walking their dogs and horses in the land destroying the grass growth, which can be quite limited depending on where you are. Just thought I'd add this, as said, I loved your videos and pictures you got from here, and you should definetely come back as there's places worth going to where you didn't get to go! :)
Very interesting, thank you for sharing that information. Its just not something we run into in many parts of the U.S. We have had, however, issues of wild animals habituating to people and creating challenges.
I just press pause when I want to have a longer look.. :) Your music is on point and definitely matches you in all ways....I like it! Fee's are understandable, have no issue paying a 'reasonable' cost. I enjoy all your on location vlogs...and you collab with a great bunch of other TH-camrs..Mads, Gavin, Adam, Thomas, I watch'em all! The Faroe Islands has incredible views everywhere. You captured some Spectacular images Nick!! p.s. Awesome hat!
You need some downtime and relax! Get over your sickness and edit some badass photos! I'm on my way back to the Faroes right now. Gonna be hard to beat what we got on our tours! :D
What I enjoy about your videos is living vicariously through your eyes. I most likely will never get there due to age/cost but I also have a problem with balance and walking trails near those cliffs would not go well. You and Mads had a client lose his camera over the edge and in my case it would be a shame to have a client go over. :)
molitor76 we went for a week and didn’t really plan anything haha maybe only 2 things (Dranganir and Mykines) the rest we just winged it and we saw so much! It helps that the sun was out til 1 am haha
Love the background to your videos Nick. As someone who has really only started taking images I like its brilliant to see how things are done and how much goes into your work.
Great vid Nick, hope you are fully recuperated soon! I really appreciate the the behind the scenes story to your photos... I can’t wait for your next adventure...
Hope you feel better soon Nick. Nothing worse than feeling ill when you are ‘on duty’ so to speak. Loved the series and can’t understand why you do not like your images. We all love them! Would love to see more of your post processing videos if you ever get the chance. I re-play lots of your old ones all the time. Would love to see you editing your Iceland shots. for example.
Loved your Faroe Island videos, Nick. My one nitpick was the sensor spots seen when you are discussing the landscapes with us. I'm one of those people who is greatly distracted by those. It's one thing when they're in still photographs, but another thing entirely in a video. Other than that, big fan of the music that you use, and I love your photos. I could never do it because I like to capture the scene with a single photo so basically straight out of camera with minimal post-production. You're doing focus stacks and blending and bracketing and all kinds of things I would never have the patience for. Good on you, man. :)
Good explanation of the trip and some of the things that you experienced. Trekking through private property should always be treated with great respect , not surprising some want to change a fee. Look forward to seeing more photos later. Thanks for sharing your work Nick. Hope your coughing go’s away real soon.
Hi Nick! Regarding how to get to the Faroe Islands, there are direct flights from Bergen as well. To charge for going out at the various places is basically okay. What I reacted to when we were there this spring was the price. If you have to pay 600 DKK for each place you want to go to then it will be expensive. Important that you are aware of this before you go there.
Hello Nick, I still remember you very well when I met you in the City of Belfast, Northern Ireland. listen, I also follow Thomas, Gavin, Adam and I love their work, vlogs and photographs. And... I know that Adam won International Photographer of the Year. However, your images are far superior to the others and your processing is second to none. It is the reason why I follow your vlogs. Your images are amazing! So, let us see your images for a second or two longer, many of us do not have the means travel to these exotic places that you go to. But we can dream - and observe yours. As always, thank you, for sharing. Best regards...
A lot of property in Iceland is private property, too. The Geysers or that Airplane site for example. So Iceland may not be the perfect example for that. Apart from that remark: Thank you for acknowledging all our requests about your music! Great to hear your thoughts about that. And it was interesting to hear your thoughts about your pictures. Good morning thing you have a TH-cam channel with loyal followers who tell you how great your photos are. 😉
Many years ago I questioned an older friend about his decision to take piano lessons. He told me, "you gotta do something to feed your soul". I recently commented that nobody has better music in their vids than you. Let me add that no one puts more of their soul into their photography than you. OK, maybe Heaton :) Thanks for sharing your passion.
ditto on the pause button haha - enjoyed your insight here Nick - that moment of time thing re landscapes is interesting and may well be what defines a great landscape image. Am really looking forward to seeing some of the images not yet edited - would love to see an astro shoot and then a walk through of your edit.
great images, well presented - tons of info and superb presentation of it all in a pleasing manner - always fun and interesting to watch you being creative :)
Always watch, always like, rarely comment (sorry :-( ). So different from everyone else, for me, your philosophy is very interesting as well as the way you deliver and present your vlogs. Great work.
I enjoy all your videos! The Faroe Islands series was really good. Thanks for sharing some of the behind the scenes stuff you do in this video. I would have liked to hear more about the food there, but I suspect you ate a lot of hot dogs! ;)
Hey Nick:) thanks fore commenting and explaining the fees, just a few years ago you could go fore a hike everywhere in sneakers but now but now it’s very muddy and hard to walk many places so that’s one thing some of the money will be spent on fore maintaining the places. By the way great videos:)
Thanks Louis! are you from the Faroes? I agree, the maintenance will be a great thing, there are just too many people walking those trails now for the grass to hold up to the foot traffic
Nick Page yes I am and I enjoy your videos and many of those places I’ve never been to even though I live here:) if you get back here I wish you better luck with the weather, the summers are beautiful.
Thanks for giving us your view and experience with tourism on the Faroes. I wish you`'re right and that the relative remoteness keeps people away (those in flip-flops - Gavin?! GAAAAAAvin, don't walk to close to....). But very often they are the signs of what lies ahead in the future. There are quite a bit of videos on hiking, vacationing and camping on the Faroes. Anyway - I really enjoy the photographs as I can see the landscape's drama in them. Thanks for sharig your thoughts. Adam
Thank you Nick for answering the music questions. I am one you has asked in the past regarding the music used on your videos. Though I do like different types of music the house that is on a lot of vBloggers videos is just too annoying for my taste, and most of time does not fit the theme, mood or to E of the youtube video. Fees on the Faroe Islands, it seems to it is a risk persons play ground as the cost of spending a week there is pushing the limit of what I can afford. I have been to Iceland and though it is expensive you can do it on a budget. Especially if I go on a workshop like fototripper, Brendan Van Son, Thomas Heaton, or the amazing Nick Page the Faroe islands tour is going to hit me hard for cost ! The Faroe islanders do need to invest in there infrastructure for the future as tourism is big money and some countries economy depends upon it. Internet is the best advertising at the moment that is out there.
Thanks Nick for sharing your experience post Faroe Islands, Love your images & stories. Re the issue of the land owners charging to walk across their land; I think it is very reasonable for them to do that, considering the impact on their land. My daughter has travelled to Iceland several times over the last 7 years and on her last trip in 2018 she found the "TOURIST/INSTAGRMERS" very disrespectful of the place they were in. The iconic location where the plane is had the road blocked off by the land owner. She found out that so many tourists were going to the location and damaging the land that forced him to take action. My daughter was determined to go there so she hiked in from the road (That was on, just no cars can go in). There is a location in New Zealand - The Church of the Good Shepard on Lake Tekapo, a beautiful location and building of an old Scottish style church. Landscape photographers relish going there but the "TOURISTS" many of them Asian background have no respect and have damaged the building by chipping stone off for souvenirs!! This has led the owners to fence off the church which is a sad situation indeed. I know you don't broadcast some of your location for the same reason. A location in Australia (ULURU) is the most iconic Australian photography location, beautiful, very very remote, a 6hr flight from Sydney. The Indigenous land owners will not let you take photographs for you to sell unless you purchase a special licence to do so. I have been there once and it is SPECTACULAR! (Check out it's geographical location on Google Earth). Looking forward to your next log, get well soon. Cheers from 🇦🇺.
Hi Nick! First of all thanks for this and all the other videos: amazing as always!! My question is about your second picture you've shown. I've not understand about the stretching process you've made.. I've understand why but not how and why you had that effect in a panoramic picture. Thanks in advance and look forward to see you're next adventure! 😉
Nice video as usual Nick :) That is why I am subscribed to your channel and podcast since a very very long time ;) Didn't intend to make the fees such an important issue with my previous comments. It's their selective element (local or foreigner) and their hight that bothers me :) But hey still the Kavloya lighthouse hike is free (this year). I wish you a quick health recovery!
I’d probably charge an access fee to hike across my property as well. Where we live there are no homes behind us, however there is a “trail” of sorts where we occasionally observe hats moving along our back wall similar to Wilson on Tim the Tool Man. Really affects our sense of privacy... Many folks don’t appreciate the changes that can occur while photographing a “static” landscape, especially when the sunlight plays amongst moving clouds.
Hugh Wolfe there are even some places here that some people have experienced a camera lens on there kitchen or living room window where a tourist is taking a picture into there houses, that’s just disrespectful:(
I recommend buying a personal ionizer when flying. The ionizer kills air born viruses within about 3 ft which you can wear around your neck. I have not gotten sick when wearing one. I recommend extra batteries (I know, photographers always have extra batteries). Great video & good info.
Paying for sites I don't have an issue with as long as the price is right. Headed up to Cape Flattery on Makah Tribe land last summer and that was $10 for a year long pass which I had no issue with. Went up to Hurricane Ridge last week for astro and it was $30 for a week long pass. Consider I was there for 7-8 hours, that was harder to swallow. Luckily there was a star party there ran by park staff which definitely added value to the evening!
I appreciate your enlightened attitude about visiting the Faroes and paying for the privilege of traveling on private property. The number of untrampled beautiful locations is shrinking and if we can afford expensive equipment and travel, we can shell out a bit more to support the citizens who are stewards of those locations.
Nick - Thanks so much for the info in this video. Just wanted you to know that I spent a couple of months scouring the internet trying to find a piece of music that you've only used a couple of times that featured mandolin and piano, and I promised myself that I wasn't going to bug you about it because it felt too much like "comp stomping", lol. Except in rare cases, I try not to ask other photographers where something was taken, and I figured it should be the same with music, because you found it first. I eventually found the piece, and wouldn't you know it, ADAM used it literally like a day later in one of his videos. The upside of my long search is that I discovered a ton of other new tracks that I'll use if and when I start producing videos myself. Premiumbeat has some great content, but 50 bucks a tune is pretty steep compared to Epidemic Sound and Soundstripe. Your photos from the Faroe Islands were epic and I hope to get there before it becomes completely overrun by landscape photographers. Thanks for all of your content! Keep up the great work! You are an inspiration to many, many photographers out here!
Have you tried using the Samyang MF 20mm/f1.8 for astro? I'm just starting out and I wanted to get a lens that would do both astro and landscape at a bargain, and that lens seemed like a good fit but I also don't see a lot of people reviewing it. Lonelyspeck did a review a while back but that's a bout it. Love the videos, and the photos. Learn something almost every time i watch them.
Thank you, Nick, for saving us from the plague of generic techno in your videos. They well match your personality and image style. As for fees to access trails on private land: I don't begrudge a (reasonable) fee a bit. Point of fact, public parks in the U.S. aren't really free either. Most charge a fee for auto access, as do NY State parks. If I owned that suddenly-very-desirable property, I wouldn't want a bunch of knobs from all over the world tramping around it for free, either.
Re the 10-shot panorama: this is the first time I've heard of "pancaking" and I'm making a note for future reference. What if instead of 10 verticals with a wide-angle, you used maybe a 50mm lens for a multiple-row pano? Yes, you need many more images and will get a much bigger file, but would you still have a pancake effect? Thanks for your time. Great work as always!
Can you give a ballpark figure for a Faroe Island trip (exclusive of workshop fees).......airfare, accomodation, meals, fees, transport? Basically, all the expenses usually not included in a workshop?
In Sweden we have something called "Allemansrätt". It means when you are in Sweden you have the right to walk, cycle, ride, ski and camp on any land with the exception of private gardens, near a dwelling house or land under cultivation. We call it the Freedom to Roam.
Love the Kenzo tempo. These "public lands", of ours, charge us for access. Perhaps not at a gate. But our taxes, whether we use these lands or not, are supported and maintained by every tax paying Individual. A citizen or not. I don't mind these fees. In typical tourist fashion (and some locals), much of our private land is closed now, because it is abused. Can't fault the Faroese for capitalizing on the new tourism. Thanks for allowing me to rant. Love your work.
Nick....you mentioned the food in the Faroes. Hot dogs everyday and some weird eggs? Is it really that bad? I'm going as soon as I can and I'm thinking I might starve?
Thanks, Nick. I am interested in purchasing a print (paper/metal) of the Black & White image. It is absolutely stunning. Are you going to have it available on your website? I look forward to the next vlog.
I enjoy your videos and photos! I do have one question. When you are on workshops do you have to get the people you video and photograph to sign "Photo Release Forms"? So you can share them on TH-cam and in other social media type avenues you use? Thanks so much for all the information you put out there about photography and the wonderful locations you shoot. :)
thanks for the kind words Terri. No I generally dont, I probably should, but I typically just ask at the beginning of a workshop, do you guys mind if I film some behind the scenes stuff.. is anyone in a witness protection program." And its about then that I get a feel for if this a group that is ok with it.. or is this a group that would rather I didn't. Most times that has worked for me, but more and more I elect to not film during workshops unless I have a really laid back group. I care more about the happiness of the group than creating a video.
Thanks Nick for the useful info in regards to the music, could I trouble you though to share the titles of the music used at 8.00 and 11.00 respectively in the Faroe Islands Adventure Part 3 video. Sorry to be a pain and I realize this isn't a questions and answers section but it would be very much appreciated if and when you have the time. Love your work, look forward to seeing so much more.
Curious as to what they are actually charging. The Navajo are all over the map with charges for Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon and I've heard of ridiculous charges for Havasu Falls ($350).
Great video as usual. Love your work. Curious what those trail fees were. Even over here the state and national parks have admission fees and some have trail fees in addition to the state park fees. Never minded paying as the trails do require maintenance.
I definitely don't begrudge them the cost and wear and tear on the property. Or in some cases making a buck or two. The primary issue though is when the pricing gets set at ridiculous levels and drifts into the predatory side of things. Even in the US the Grand Canyon costs $30. Great Sand Dunes costs $20. But, you also do start to get amenities as well. Charging $60 or $70 for a walk up to a basic location is absurd. There's also the question of where part of that cost should sit. It's apples and oranges, but to be fair, the US and other locations have built out national parks by governmental land purchases specifically to address the common need. If large sums of money are coming into the local economy from tourism dollars, that also needs to be re-invested in supporting that infrastructure. I was lucky to visit last year before everything kicked into overdrive. I'd love to go back, especially as I'm based in CPH and it's comparatively silly cheap and convenient to visit but have been so turned off by the approach that I'm hearing them take, that I'll probably skip and focus on other regions. So, I guess, at some level, it has been effective.
I agree, the storytelling is more important than the photos. I like what Adam Gibbs does - showing both the unprocessed raw photo and the finished version. Care to share any info about how high the fees were?
I'm just back from a 11-day trip there. Interesting to hear you thoughts, Nick, and some really impressive photos. Just my 2 cents... I really also don't blame land owners for charging fees, but it would have been better if goverment would have funded proper trail building and marking before investing in campains to attract more tourists. People generally are well-willing, but you can't stick to a trail if you keep losing it or if it's just too muddy to walk it without slipping (the Kalsoy lighthouse trail was the worst), which inevitably leads to people spreading out and thus to more erosion. If the goverment wants to earn more money from tourists, they'll also will need to invest in a proper trail system. Also, hiking options are just so limited if you don't know how to navigate on gps/map&compass, which concentrated the masses on just a few trails. On hiking routes without visible trails, like from Vestmanna to Hvalvik, I literally came across no one. Oh, and a general tip: go camping. It will save you a LOT of money, and in the evening when all day tourist have gone back to their hotels, you'll have the whole place almost to yourself. Which was perfect.
I really enjoyed this set of videos. There is always an interesting feel to the videos where you aren’t as used to the location as you would be back home. I think that the fees are worth it. In the end it separates the wheat from the chaff. I feel they deserve some compensation for having droves of people trampling through their fields. As to the music, I will bet that a lot of people don’t know that people have to pay for the rights to use the music in their vlogs. I am curious, do you frequently re-process your images once you get back home from a trip like this and on to the big screen?
Hi Nick, I'm planning to visit in September. Where do you pay the fees to have access to the private land? Are you just going up to the landowners place and paying them directly?
At one place there is a toll booth type place set up we can just go up and pay with a debit card, on another place there’s a sign on the gate to the trail with contact information.
knowing your musical history why don't you use the music you preformed in your younger days? gorgeous shots great chat. do you have any plans to try the lofoten islands?
Thinking of going this Sept, suggestions for photography guides? Thinking about getting a car time horizion about 4-6 days, any suggestions would be apprecitated. Primarily a photo and hiking trip.
Ruben, strike out on your own and forget the guide. Consider it a growth opportunity and you’ll be a better person for it. Plus you might appreciate the end result so much more. That’s what separates the good photographers from the wanna-be photographers. Show us your individual and personal interpretation of the landscape. Have a great trip!
@@jimarmstrong1458 The concern is around "getting to places known to locals and knowing how to get to sites that may require a fee"not sure if all that is posted or readily visible. Plus I noted that some of those places were gottent o by boat. I suspect those were not on a regularly scheduled. and finally a day or two with a guide and some without....?
Your music fits your style and you. For me the fee's are ok. The only thing I wish for one source of information for all of the fees. Like on the official website of the tourism office. I really like the B&W image. Usually I'm no fan of people in the landscapes but here I think this is ok. (This is only a matter of personal preference ;-) )
I would enjoy an astrophotography video or twelve. I tried to capture the big dipper and Jupiter this past weekend, and I shot just long enough that I started to get star trails, was disappointed.
Thoroughly enjoyed your Faroe Islands trip! Nick you truly have amazing workshops. Loved the videos of the Faroe Islands. What a magical place for photography. Take care and get well soon. Donna
Bring it on - is so awesome! It fits the surreal effects of where you visit. The part of oh,oh, oh, and then the drum roll.
👍 Thank you for sharing your favorites. For me your second placed pic is my favorite, drama at it's best.
Love the music, vlog and photos. The Faroe Islands is somewhere most won't get to visit. To see them thru your story is fantastic!

Excellent work, Nick!!
Mike Abrenica as per usual!
Was not expecting your favorite image to be a B&W, but it totally makes sense. All 3 of your top favorites are just excellent.
Thanks Nick good to hear the back story on the Faroes images.
Excellent set of images. Thanks for sharing it looked like you ha£ a great trip
Great recap Nick. Awesome images! Get well.

hey nick. excellent set of videos from the faroes. thanks for this wrap up, great to get inside the head of nick page.
Appreciated your thought of capturing the fleeting moment. That's what is very often about.
You're the best. Thank you for answering my audio questions!
I have been loving your recent music Nick! It fits!
Some nice results there Nick especially the light ray image... Keep going forward 👍

I pause to, then watch with "Bring it on" 3 or 4 times with photos, maybe come back in a week or two to get my fix :) So... Bring it on Nick!
Hugh Wolfe there are even some places here that some people have experienced a camera lens on there kitchen or living room window where a tourist is taking a picture into there houses, that’s just disrespectful:(
great work Nick
Enjoyable and informative!
Hey Nick, great video!
In the gorgeous B&W layered image, it is clever how the Mads stance mirrors the shape of the sea stack in the distance.
Was in the Faroes a few weeks back, heard of new direct flights to The Faroes from NYC....perhaps next year.
I hope the never have direct flights to the Faroes. That will just encourage the instagram crowd!
Exactly... people will spend 50 bucks on a dinner at Applebee’s but won’t spend $20 hiking to a beautiful location and making a lifelong memory
Great video. Could you explain how you take care of the pancaking in another video? Thanks
Your music on your " why you shoot landscape photography" was the best!.... House music 😂😂
Stunning images.
Tourists in flip-flops? Was it Gavin? LOL
Great video Nick.
Basically, all the expenses usually not included in a workshop?
crazy cool images
Get well Nick, great content, I wouldnt change a thing!
In Sweden we have something called "Allemansrätt". It means when you are in Sweden you have the right to walk, cycle, ride, ski and camp on any land with the exception of private gardens, near a dwelling house or land under cultivation. We call it the Freedom to Roam.
and I love that approach ;)
Those were great Nick.
I could certainly make it available!
Do you plan on going back anytime in the next year or two?
Never minded paying as the trails do require maintenance.
as said above between 30 and 100 USD per person
Great stuff Nick! Cool hat. Where'd you get it?
your voice match that song. very...country XD (new to your channel -> so i love this video where you share your thoughts on music and music selection)
Lol ironically.. I hate country music... except Johnny Cash
A picture tells a thousand words, though.
$30 to $100 USD for most. Some require a guide
Thank you Nick! I hope you will get to test the new Sony 200-600 zoom! P.S I really missed your ending music!
amazing work!!!
You and Gavin should meet up for astrophotography!! The Faroes are definitely on my bucket list
@@NickPage Awesome, thanks!
Nick Page and what lenses would your recommend bringing. I think you said you had a wide angle with you. Could I get by with 24-70?
Brian Bakale You’re going to want something wider than 24 mm I highly recommend a 16 to 35 or 14 to 24 something in that area
Nick Page sweet, thanks dude!
knowing your musical history why don't you use the music you preformed in your younger days? gorgeous shots great chat. do you have any plans to try the lofoten islands?
Thinking of going this Sept, suggestions for photography guides? Thinking about getting a car time horizion about 4-6 days, any suggestions would be apprecitated. Primarily a photo and hiking trip.
Ruben, strike out on your own and forget the guide. Consider
it a growth opportunity and you’ll be a better person for it.
If someone wants to see the longer photos they can just pause.
Also, I like your music selection.
Astro vlog? Finally! :D
Maybe a video of your top5-10 images. Possibly mixed with top 5-10 fav other than yours and why. ( In general, not just there) Good teaching tool
I would enjoy an astrophotography video or twelve. I tried to capture the big dipper and Jupiter this past weekend, and I shot just long enough that I started to get star trails, was disappointed.
Hope you're feeling better! Just out of curiosity, do you have any idea how many of your viewers are from your home state?
