      Videos like these make me want to resurrect my '86 460ci F250 4x4...gas was over $4 a gallon when the water pump went out, so it was either spend the money and time to fix a truck that got like 8 mpg and leaked oil like crazy from seemingly everywhere, especially the rear main seal, or get something a little more economical. I was putting a quart in on every fillup, which is really saying something since I was filling it up all the time. I do miss that power and the sound of the true dual exhaust with 3" pipe and 24" glasspacks...It rumbled the ground enough to set off car alarms as I drove by them, lol. That engine is a monster, and sounds like one.
      I've also got to admit it was kind of fun to see the expression on the faces of young guys working at the parts store, when they asked engine size and I told them 7.5l 460...some of them get wide eyed and say something like, "Whoa, really?!" lol, always cracked me up.

  • @eyellgeteven9928
    @eyellgeteven9928 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This would be more interesting if both trucks had the same tires, the same weight in back and the same driver (I know that can't happen, but it's likely the biggest factor.), then it would be closer to showing which engine is better at pulling. It looks to me like the diesel has more street oriented tires, and the 460 powered truck had more aggressive tires, that's why it looked like something was going to snap on the 460 powered truck, it was getting more traction.

  • @michaelbenoit248

    We’re these both stick of automatic? Both of these trucks are great. I’d take a good 460 over the new trucks, but I drive a 93 idi & she’s been doing well as of now. I get about 16-20mpg city & highway. Highway is like 20mpg, city is like 15-17 ish. Got a ZF5 2wd & 3.55 gears.
    Had a 95 7.3 w 4.10s & threw a 3.55 axle in it before I got my 93 before I started to have issues w head gaskets & injectors.
    Bet that 460 gets 5mpg or for them gassers it’s smiles per gallon of fuel.

    Both are tough trucks. I have owned both. 460 will wind up and pull hard from the bottom to redline. And get 5mpg with a heavy load. 7.3 takes a bit to get them going but once turbo is spooled at 2,500rpm. You can't pull em down. 11mpg doing it. Looks like 7.3 has a bit of advanced in the front. The old 460 is stout.

      the 460 thats in that truck, if its EFI, has from factory roughly 245 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.
      the 7.3 power stroke (im guessing based on the badging) has 225-230 horse power (at 3k rpm) and 450 ftlbs of torque, so they are actually quite comparable, granted with a tune, and some other motor upgrades the powerstroke will outperform the 460, but stock for stock they are quite comparable.

      +runeshark22 you buy a diesel for reliability and because they produce higher torque at lower rpm.

    • @runeshark22
      @runeshark22 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      SRT Viper 51 well the reliability comes with a cost. you need parts, you're gonna pay. the trucks cost more up front, the fuel costs more, everything about them is more expensive to own. And I'm not hauling a bulldozer 1200 miles a couple times a week, I don't need that kind of torque. I'm pulling a race car to a drag strip or pullng firewood, stuff that I never need to max out the GCWR on a big diesel, I'm perfectly content with a ballsy gas engine for my uses.

    • @rickresendiz1871
      @rickresendiz1871 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +runeshark22 diesel cost less than gas. If you're not towing, you don't need diesel. Stick with a gasser since you don't tow. But don't compare the two. Nobody believes gasses are more reliable. They hit higher Temps. The also guzzle up fuel in order to match what a diesel can produce. The drop in MPGs on a diesel while towing isn't nearly as much as a gasser would drop.

    These pull offs are fun to watch, but in reality only show which vehicle has more traction. The guy with the heaviest truck and biggest tires usually takes the win. There's a video with a Duramax 4x4 pulling a 10 wheel tractor around here on TH-cam.
    A real test would be a drag race uphill with a trailer grossing about 10K.

    When it comes to the early 7.3s and 460s it really just depends on which one you like more. Getting bad MPG in the 460 but not having to worry about costly maintenance or getting better MPG in the 7.3 and paying for the maintenance. personally I'm a diesel guy because I own a transporting business and I like the MPG and reliability. BUT for a straight up round town work/play truck. I'd go 460. Easier to work on/maintain. Cheaper too. And if you blow up a 460 just go to a junkyard haha you aint finding no good 7.3s at a junkyard!

It has no spark and we ended up pulling the distributor and she started right up. She needs a little more work, there’s still leaks here and there but over all for a truck that had been sitting under a pine tree for three years it’s in very good condition. Even in New York it has no rust.

    Here something to think about also Ford as retained 62% of consumers where as chevy has 50% and dodge comes in at a staggering 22%. so now if ford makes such a horrible diesel why is it the they produce so much more revenue then the other two? And why did GM have to close their Saturn and Pontiac plants down and almost do away with Cadillac before they took their second government bail out?

    • @TheShanesousley
      @TheShanesousley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      People buy Ford for the name. I work at a Ford dealer and those 6.7 diesels aren't exactly incredible. GM was losing money with Saturn and Pontiac so they ran off the parts and got rid of those names. Whatever they didnt make deadline on they ran with Chevy emblems. They still make Caddys so I wasn't aware they dropped them. If you want to talk about bailouts I suggest you research Ford history. Ford almost went under long before GM or Chryler and they even took bailout money at the same time. Media will have you believe many things.

    the only thing this proves is one guys truck has better tires than the other.
    To do the test right you would need to put an identical load in the back of each truck so the rear ends were both weighted down the same, then you would have to have the same tires on both trucks, lastly both trucks would have to have the same drive line whether it be two wheel drive or four wheel drive, both trucks would have to be on the same consistent surface. Then and only then can you accurately tell which would win in a tug of war.

    My motorhome a 1990 Ford Fleetwood Flair 30 foot. The best RV I have ever owner. The 460 motor fires up like a charm every time even when I’m about ready to run out of gas. Very quiet. Unlike his mine is fuel injected so from inside the RV you can’t really hear it running. They have made a lot of improvement on the 460 over the last several years. It’s a workhorse. You wouldn’t believe the shear weight these motors can pull without even a single complaint. No can’t complain. Only thing that hasn’t changed??? Average gas mileage is about 7.5 miles per gallon. It costs about a $1 every time I fire it up. They can use a lot of oil, so you really have to keep your eyes on it. Otherwise this motor will run with the wind on anything you give it, and keeps on ticking. I love my Ford 460 motor.

    I had an 87/88 f350 with the 460 and 5 spd w od and that thing would go up a mountain in first gear and although it had a big grain body dump it would float down the highway at a 100 mph with ease like a caddy or town car and it felt like you were only going 55 it was so smooth and it had to stop at every gas station you saw, I was worried cuz when I bought it the owner was totally honest that it had 350k on the odometer, I beat the hell outta that truck for about 4 or 5 years using it to haul huge, heavy loads of scrap i beams and never had a minute of trouble from it, sold it it to another contractor that also beat the hell out of it for the next cpl yrs and after not seeing it around town for a cpl months I bumped into the guy and asked if it finally died and he said he'll no, that thing was a beast and ran like a top but some moron that worked for him somehow caught the engine compartment on fire trying to dump gas into the intake after letting it run outta gas, apparently he didn't follow the rule of stopping at every gas station it saw, I learned quick that pulling in the gas station and telling the attendant, ya give me 20 bucks worth of the cheap stuff was literally a complete waste of time, I owned it when Katrina knocked out the gas plants down south and gas was over 4 bucks a gallon, 20 bucks would literally get you to the next gas station if you were lucky and going downhill with a strong wind behind ya, lol. One of the best, toughest trucks I ever owned and belive me I was not kind to it ever a day in its life and I think I paid 3 grand for it and when I sold it I got 2500 for it cash after 4 or 5 yrs of faithful, trouble free daily duty, I was sad when I heard it burned up enuff that he junked it, it would probably still be running today cuz the guy that sold it to me gave me a xerox copy of a magazine article of a guy down south with the identical truck with a million miles on the original block, granted it was owned by a Ford mechanic but it made me feel good enuff to part with my 3 grand for a vehicle with over a quarter million miles on it which I would never do otherwise but it seems those cheap beaters are always the best buys that never let u down, no reason to use first gear, not even fully loaded and starting off on a steep hill, 2nd gear was strong as you would ever need, first gear was just overkill
