  • As an RAF Flying Instructor, I demonstrate what happens when your engine fails in a 6 tonne fighter jet.
    The first thing to do is nothing...
    ...that's right, just relax - work the problem and fly the aircraft.
    Then work out where your nearest airfield is as you'll be coming down like a stone!
    Now, speak to ATC and get them to help you get home!
    (This was all flown with the throttle at idle, producing hardly any thrust at all and is how we simulate having a failed engine in the Hawk flying training aircraft.)
    Instructor is on the Hawk T2 at RAF Valley, UK.

    my CFI in Australia during the 90's was ex RAF 93 SQN from 1953. I can see so many similarities between you and him, in teaching style and also content. He made me the pilot i am today, im proud to have been taught by an ex-CFS instructor.

    Interesting video. I had a genuine engine out in Spain whilst NPPL training, when all four Rotax pistons stopped going side to side due to a faulty fuel pump! Fairly uneventful glide from about 4500ft to a field that as it turned out belonged to the chief of Valencia Police, so we even ended up with Police he called in to help move the aircraft. No damage done :-)

    Was always my dream to fly in the RAF but was hit with two major obstacles 1. I’m painfully stupid 2. I only I have one good eye… my fate was sealed at a very young age. Love your content 👍

      +Fast Jet Performance imagine doing this with the old equipment like al would have had , is this a procedure that would have been practiced during the 2nd world war because if it was they really had basic kit , FairPlay to all off you for serving our land , hats off and respect, thank you for your work

      Had engine failure in a Rover 416sli coming up an exit slip road on the A50 ... zero brakes, zero power steering ... took the roundabout at the end like the car was stolen, eventually stopped in a hedge!

    Fascinating as ever. I really enjoy watching and learning. I remember sitting under Wyton glide path as a kid in the 70's and watching the Canberras practice this (or was it called asymmetric landing with one engine nominally 'out'?). I expect the Victors did as well but we were usually just in awe of the noise to notice angles of decent.

    I've just found this channel but thanks a lot for making these.     Necessary training. My cousin ( retd, now with BA) had to do this twice for real. Once in a Tornado GR4 (Bird strike) and another in the Hawk at Valley, flew through exhaust of another Hawk a la Top Gun. He safely recovered the plane both times.

    I visited the RAF valley this year and the funny thing was I bumped into one of the mechanic who spent 2hours driving to my home town just to get a car and he said when im old enough i’ll be able to enlist looking forward to it

    Woah! The only way that pull up warning could have been any more forceful, would be to have a mechanical arm pop out and slap you around the back of the head. A tad more urgent than civilian versions. Great video, thanks for taking the time to record and upload.

    Awesome stuff love watching the clips over Wales. Can you confirm when heading south down the coast from valley to the cardigan bay about 8 miles in land you guys shoot through my valley. My house is next to the village hall. Looks like a hanger. Is it used for target practice. I ask because of the way it is approached. Two ways, it seems you line up with it, then pull up and out in the two opposite directions of travel used? Please post some clips from Ceredigion so I can spot places thanks for doing what you do on TH-cam and for what you might have to do for our country

    I'm lost. As a glider pilot, I do nothing but this. 1:1 @ 7000ft means you can cover 7000ft lateral before you have lost your 7000ft height.
    In a paraglider, leaving the top of a 3000ft mountain and a 10:1 glide ratios, I easily covered the 3 miles to the landing field with a "down range" of 30,000ft.
    A delta wing fighter jet, probably does have a 1:1 glide ratio at 190kts. It's going to be +pitch AoA (or probably 0* pitch with a +AoA).
    So if you are at 7000ft your maximum glide distance = 7000ft + whatever energy you started with.

    5 back seat jollies in a harrier. 4 in a T4 and 1 on a T10 which come in 95. Compare the T4 cockpit to the T10 was massive. T10 being a class cockpit.
    Had a back seat jollie on the hawk T1 in 92 on the weather ship. I was sick as a dog. Couldn't even put the seat pin or MDC pin in so the jock couldn't park till I got them in as you well know
    I was banned from getting any back seat jollies at brawdy.

    I remember reading somewhere about a thumb rule.. to quickly determine distance to airport if you can make it or not just by measuring the distance with your thumb. Opinions on that? Would you use it? Obviously everyone has different size hands etc :D

    Just kinda tried a bird strike upon takeoff in the fs2020 T45 Goshawk after flying from Culdrose to Exeter via the vor beacon at Berry head. the take off at Exeter didnt end well :(

      Callsigns change and yes, we do work with FACs sometimes but not as often as the front-line Typhoons and Tornados.

    Wondering how different this is compared to fighter jets, wouldnt a turbofan at idle (like the T2) produce way more thrust than a fighter jet? Which produces little thrust to no thrust at idle anyways, so it would not be comparable (even in training). Is this trained in the 'big boy' aircraft later or do you assume the skills are transferable?

    Nice one, Tim. I fancy that some of that was said so fast that it will have been unintelligible to the non-pilot, but it was pretty exciting. I was on the first Hawk course, btw, in 1977, but we didn't do 1in1 recoveries then, only PFLs. I learned 1in1s on Hunters, at Valley then Brawdy. Of course the spool-up time of Avon engine was a little quicker than the Adour's, but you were often in manual controls because the hyd pressure might have gone for real.

      +Chris Barker The Hawk T1 still practises the High Key (4500 ft), low key (2500 ft) approach over the airfield but it was felt that the design of the T2 wing coupled with the extra weight of the aircraft made a 1 in 1 PFL the preferred option.

    Edit: Don't panic, googled.
    Preset regularly used freqs on Mil Air UHF AM 225.0 to 399.95 MHz. So numbered buttons must be the "studs" just like presets on FM car stereos.
    Takes me back to my scanning days listening to Red One on 243.45 MHz AM "Hollllllding the bank... Now."
    "Rollllling out... Now."
    "Smoke on... Now.... Smoke off!"
    And the synchro pair whooping as they slip past each other.
    You could hear the g in Red One's voice often. That was circa 1998 at Dartmouth & Torbay airshows. Red One definitely had his own style back then.

    Awesome videos. What an absolute ninja. Tornado questions, go! ....How does this procedure differ from the Tornado? Is it pretty much the same with different speeds? Is a conventional landing possible with only one engine out or does the approach change in that situation? Hit me with as much as you can, videos/more legendary diagrams are welcome. Thanks, Tim...Keep feeding us with this stuff!

      A Tornado can't do an engine off forced landing - it weighs 26 tonnes fully loaded and flies like a brick. With one engine it is quite complicated but manageable, just higher power settings but you will use more fuel than if you have two engines running due to slower speeds creating a higher angle of attack of the wing and therefore more drag.       Can you recommend any half decent books on the Tornado or anywhere online I can learn more about it? Is all the RAF stuff classified?

    I was going to ask if the T1a profile was the same but I see below you referred to a High Key and Low Key T1 approach. Could you briefly explain them please?

      +klem lao It's like flying a circuit but a bit higher as the aircraft will descend faster with a seized engine so it starts at 4500 ft at the end of the runway then you should be 2500 ft alongside the threshold you are to land on before you start your 180 degree finals turn to land on the runway.

    Hi. What's it like dealing with engine failure on an aircraft that has terrible glide characteristic. The Hawk does look as though, and indeed this video shows that it can glide reasonably well but some fast jets look like they would just fall out of the sky.

      Most do fly like bricks, Hawk glides 2 miles per 1000 ft of height lost, I'll cover this in the next video.

      @@FastJetPerformance Brilliant! Fleet Air Arm was my dream job coming out of cadets (over 25 years ago now). Sadly my eyesight let me down at the time, and I wanted to fly the Lynx. I do enjoy watching videos like this, it gives me a very small glimpse into what life could have been like.

    Too high?? Overshot the runway. No air brakes?? Can you do a forward slip when too high?

      You can but not advised in swept wing aircraft as you can blank the wing and the rate of descent can be unmanageable. S turns were preferable but not worth the effort so experienced pilots would sideslip or throw the jet away.

      @@FastJetPerformance But a mild forward slip maybe, I mean, not like a piper cub with full ailerons and full rudder. Mild one only?? The Gimly Glider airliner and TACA 110 did Forward Slips both of them on swept wing airliners and landed safely. Better than throwing the jet away, or your back from the hard ejection.. See those videos of airliners that did Forward Slips and avoided overshooting the landing spots and didnt crash.

      Freeman nope, I failed my maths A level but went on to get an Engineering degree

      Ok, that is the only thing I am worrying about. Although my predicted maths grade is a 4(B) I am not 100% sure I will pass. Am I right in saying you dont have to take maths as an A level?
