In this video I will restore a Pokemon mini handheld console. This unit doesn't turn on and it's quite yellowed. I removed the yellowing with retrobrighting, here's my tutorial to for that: • How to remove yellowin...
Next I cleaned all the corrosion from the board which fixed the issue with turning on.

That UV color restore is always impresive
And kinda hazardous
@@clonedbraixenooo why so?
Shame it doesn't last. I wish there were a way to preserve the original look without re-retrobrighting every few months
@@Pixelman546 is there some kind of transparent primer that you can spray on the part to preserve it longer?
@@prodigy_84 There is anti UV coating spray, but even that won't last too long.
Good lord, I would never have guessed that the front plate was supposed to be clear and not yellow. This was a fun watch. Also, you are right, Ive never seen this handheld gaming device.
To be honest, I liked the yellow colour better xD
@@graustreifbrombeerkralle1078 it's almost like a pikachu yellow. Would be a cool console color
@@dragonstalker49484444444⁴⅘😅t😅t😅t😅t😅t😅t😅t😅t😅t
I didn't even realize it was supposed to be clear and that surprised me.
"I don't know what Nintendo's goal was with this"
A phrase that numerous people have said about Nintendo over the generations
All Nintendo nerds, myself included, utter this exact phrase at the end of every single Nintendo Direct, every. Single. One.
"Hey Nintendo! Since emulation is wrong according to you, could you make your older games readily available on all your platforms? And maybe consider re-releasing some of your older consoles in limited runs or up to order?"
*Nintendo:* "Best we can do is copyright strike any video that uses even a second of gameplay from our games."
"... That's not-"
*Nintendo:* "You're welcome! 😃"

By the looks of it, it seems they were trying to make as more people as possible go blind
The last thing I expected to see from one of this relaxing, restoration videos was a tank exploding out of nowhere, great video anyways!
His voice is honestly exactly what id expect from his actions in videos
@@BrowniePembrokeI thought the voice was ai generated?
Settled down to watch a relaxing video, when I suddendly get jumpscared by a text to speech with exploding tanks. That was different
@@staygolden4836listening to it again you're probably right
@@BrowniePembrokeWe've heard his voice once before, a long while ago. It's actually quite soothing.
I, for one, miss the days of translucent tech shells to see all the ugly circuitboards and wires underneath.
That was our "player 1" PSX controller.
i actually have that style for my ps4 controller. 'its my favorite one, its official and everything
I have no idea why ppl stopped selling transparent electronics. Circuitry is an artform.
@@Wolvenworks I've been really wanting to get a transparent shell for my devices and consoles. They're so cool.
sponsor jumpscared me 😭
It never ceases to amaze me how that yellowing is reversed so easily, even on clear plastics... :P
It's so interesting, that many of this smaller console restorations is mostly just cleaning up the corrosion to make it work again. It seems so simple yet so effective
It’s almost like they’re not broken in the first place 🤔
@jakebauman150 Technically they aren't broken, just really mostly cleanups if I'm honest. I do repairs on consoles and devices and it's honestly a lot of that than actually having to replace or weld pieces together.
The War Thunder AD was unexpected 😂😅
I imagine it takes a lot of time making and editing new videos. It's always worth the wait for a new video because I know the quality is top notch. I hope to see more industrial restorations, those are my favorite videos.
He said it was more tanned than an old person from Florida 😂:thanks for the likes
No way... We are watching the same video?
@@Ride-Drivedam i forgot how to read
LMFAO YEAH, I found that really funny.
Never owned one myself, but I remember seeing then for sale in Toys R Us way back in the day. Nice to see that you got to work on restoring one.
This channel actually inspired me to get into retro repair stuff myself, and I've since refurbished and even upgraded my old GameCube, Wii, DS, and GBA.
Whenever he starts talking in adds it freaks me out cause I use these videos to sleep cause I like the ASMR. So when he talks I’m like who is talking right now 😂
Vivid memories of these at the old NYC Pokemon Center (now Nintendo World) in the 00s! Wanted one but never got one, looks like aside from cute pocket-size console design, I wasn't missing much game-wise 😆👍
Ah, the noughties. Truly a fun time.
Japan had the best games so yeah😅
I still got mine, always kept it in its box, played just a few times with it and it still looks like new, just like this in the video after the restoration :3 you surely honored it!
> me watching videos without commentary to help me sleep
> TANKS TANKS TANKS
This AD worked flawlessly as a jump scare! Not sure if it was intended, though...
I wanted one so bad as a kid! It's so soothing to watch you restore it.
Glad to see one of these restored. Especially since they're becoming so hard to find in good condition nowadays.
You've been missed, Mr Odd

"You've been asleep Cap."
+1 to the retrobrighting. Always a satisfying thing to watch.
I honestly thought you were going to do the same with the game but hunting stickers and navigating the game internals would have made that difficult.
Always satisfying. Great work!
It always brings me happiness to see these videos. They are just the perfect blend of satisfying restoration and on point tongue-in-cheek comedy. I have been going through quite a lot lately, because we just now moved in to our new house after living in a camper for the past 8 months. It’s been a long and nerve racking journey, and I was very close to losing my sanity. But it was these videos that were my refuge. I would just go to the back of the camper, grab my phone, and turn on an Odd Tinkering video, and I would instantly lull myself into a relaxed state. It was like therapy to me. Odd Tinkering (and Ducktor, too!) if you are reading this, you cannot begin to fathom how thankful I am. Thank you.
I’m old enough to remember those days of the Pokémon Mini. I didn’t own one myself, but what I can tell you is that I actually owned a Pokémon Pikachu 2, a pocket Pikachu that communicated with the old Pokémon Gold and Silver games through the Infrared connection. The watts you earned by walking with your Pocket Pikachu were able to be redeemed for items via the Mystery Gift. I hope that in a future video, you get to restore a Pocket Pikachu of some kind.
As I started playing the games with Pokemon Blue, can I just say that I resent you calling Pokemon Silver/Gold old! 😅
@@Zoso14892 It was never intended to be offensive, so I’m sorry for not saying “original”. However, I think there are worst things that people can choose to use when describing retro games and have done so.
This is just my personal opinion, but I don’t think “old” as an adjective is really all that bad. It’s like when my boss or other old people take high offense to being called “old” when they are in their 60s and above, as if they feel ashamed of it. Unfortunately, society sometimes corrupts and brainwashes people into thinking that being old, whether it’s an object or tech device that was created in the past, or a human being that’s lived as long as they have, is the worst thing to happen to something or someone.
If you still feel a resentment towards me, I can’t stop you from feeling that way. Although I think resenting me because of using an adjective that you disagreed with is a bit extreme. I’d rather you resent me for my actions and not my words.
@octolingjen ah, I'm sorry! I was only teasing. I'm not even that old, I was a kid when Pokemon first started. My mind just refuses to believe an extra decade has passed, and it's not still 2013 😆
@@Zoso14892Oh okay. It’s hard to tell sometimes. I totally get what you mean. As of writing this reply, I celebrated my 40th birthday earlier this week. I was fifteen years old when I got the original Pokémon Red version. Now we are in Generation 9 awaiting for the announcement of Generation 10. Time really has flown. I remember when every generation came out like it happened yesterday.
@octolingjen happy birthday! That makes you slightly older than me then. I was 10 when the first generation released. I lost touch around gen 3, though, and when I look in now, I get so confused by the new designs. I don't know where the last 20 years went, though.
Was watching this while waiting for Warthunder to update and got VERY CONFUSED when warthunder suddenly started playing lmao
I would love to see you retrobrite the cartridges next. And perhaps IPA and metal polish the contacts as well. There aren't enough videos where people repair cartridges for retro systems like the NES.
It's been a while since I didn't come back to this channel, and coming back to such a rarity is a nice thing.
Forgot about these Pokemon Mini devices. We actually still have a couple that my daughters go when they visited their Japanese grandparents back in the day. Found one in a drawer just now. Other one must still be with other daughter.
Its a cute little console. The color change is shocking, the clear and blue look really nice together
Don't forget about the trick of soaking the screen adhesive with IPA to loosen it and rocking the plastic frame back and forth to release the screen when dealing with fragile screens also you left quite a bit of corrosion on the PCB you could have got it out with some vinegar. But you have to make sure to get rid of it all otherwise it'll also corrode the copper

The colour difference alone was mind-blowing. Great job as always.
It’s been so long since ducktor got his teeth brushed. Thank you. He very much needed it
I've never seen one of these. Almost certainly I would've ignored it in the store since around that time I already had a gameboy.
I always turn these videos up as loud as possible for the ASMR, but the ad suddenly playing without warning me with a countdown timer was incredibly loud. If not a countdown timer, at least make the ad quieter
My first video since a long time. That was more simple than other videos, but fun to watch. I can't believe the shell of the console is clear and not yellow 😂 Greetings to the Ducktor.
the cartridge need a retrobrighting too ^^
I remember these! Wow, you did a good job on restoring it! Lovely work!
Impressive little game and impressive restoration, who would expect any less.great video as always 👍👍👍😎😎😎
"More tanned than an old person from Florida". LOL. That's good!
That sponsor gave me a heartattack
I was honestly wondering about those caps on the board being the culprits. Great video as always, looks so fresh
"And the front of the shell is more tanned than an old person from Florida"
That made my night. 🤣
I have one of these but in purple! Watching that yellow just disappear and return to its original color(?) is always satisfying.
Damn that's the rates one! Is it in good condition too?
@@Louis22222 Very! Aside from maybe a spotty contact with the Dpad, everything else is in great condition.
I used to own a few of these as a kid. I don’t even know how we got them, I think a friend had them. We even had the game cart that had like 9 mini games on them and played the heck out of it. Those bring back memories. They are so cool, and now so expensive 😭 I should emulate them lol, but otherwise, this is a wonderful restoration, you’re doing wonderful things!
I seriously thought the yellow was its original colour and the transparent is just its faded colour from usage. 😂
I thought it was supposed to be orange and blue
but the clear and blue buttons looks really cool
Sick job!❤ I thought the console was originally yellow and blue 😂
This console has a surprisingly robust homebrew community. People find value in the strangest things.
I needed this today, thank you!
0:42 Ha! Also, I just thought it was SUPPOSED to be orange with a gradient at the bottom 😅 To be fair, I've never seen this console before 🙈
The thing had yellowed almost to the point of matching the original Pocket Pikachu.
the design of this is like an unusually large chicken nugget
Great job as always!
I wish you restored the color of the gaming cartridge as well, the yellowing of the top really stood out once the front plate was back to its original color.
Another great restoration video by Odd Tinkering!
This is actually one of my dream pieces in terms of Pokémon merch- partly because I love pet sims and the pokemon breeder game fits that. Amazing find.
Welcome back❤ anyway it looks like there's a bit of yellowing on the top of the cartridge too
I bought that exact soldering iron/heat gun setup after watching your video and I am not disappointed one bit thanks
Volvió el Duckthor!!! 🦆🔨⚡
Such an interesting little device. If I had this as a kid I would have played it so much. Like a Tamagachi!
There’s a game that is literally a tamagotchi version of pokemon its great
Honestly, the era this came from. Tamagotchi's and Pokémon were huge. So, Nintendo probably thought they could get some of the Tamagotchi market with a Pokémon console, but missed the mark on the whole pocket e-pet craze that was Tamagotchi's whole point.
your videos have taught me how to fix some old wii remotes and nunchucks. thank you for bestowing your knowledge to us
Aww so cute! I didn't even know this was a real game console, as it made a cameo in Pokemon Channel for the gamecube. Everything from the visuals to the music is the same- that's honestly pretty cool.
You were right, I’ve never heard of this!!!
Awesome job from you and the Ducktor!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
yay! the Wizard is back!
Awesome restoration as allways! thank you so much for tour videos! I allways wait for them! greetings!
The only reason I know of these things was because of Pokemon Channel (A sorta sequel to Hey You, Pikachu!,) which had a Mini emulator with only 1 or two games included, and you had to hunt for the others.
Looks fantastic. Thanks for the awesome video!
Whilst it was obviously done enough to get the device working, I did notice there was quite a bit of corrosion left when you had finished.
20yrs ago I worked for a cell phone company that made tiny cell phones. So I can speak somewhat to reason(s), which I would assume could also apply here. 1-Consumers, especially in asia were asking for smaller products, 2-research into miniaturization, to test your own abilities and skill sets and if you actually sell it you can recoup the research cost, 3-respin a product from one region to another, for very little initial financial outlay, 4-Chasing Fads, You might be too young to remember how the world reacted to the Tamagotchi when it was originally released. Everyone tried to capitalize on it, there were even people making $$$$$ offering daycare/babysitting for other people's Tamagotchi's while their owners went to school/work. Everybody wanted a piece of that action, and even if you failed it was worth trying because of the afore mentioned reasons #2 & #3
"The front of the shell is more tanned than an old person from Florida." Bro wasting no time to make a good joke 😂 great video
Cool! So glad you’re still posting content!!!
Didn't you leave a lot of corrosion left on the pcb? Won't it spread?
I've never seen one of these in person, but thanks to spending copious amounts of time on Bulbapedia when I was younger, I knew exactly what they were. Didn't know they were THAT small, though.
Did the game cartridge itself not need retrobrighting? I don't know what color it's naturally supposed to be.
Superb as always
As a 90's kid and retro gaming enthusiasts, I've definitely heard of this gem. Appreciate your beautiful restoration. Would really enjoy seeing you purchase an older CRT TV 📺 and restore it to working conditions along with cosmetic defects. Further video i hope? :) Best wishes in 2024.
Retrobrighting is always satisfying to see, but this was particularly impressive.
Bold of you to assume I've never heard of this contraption. Which I haven't.
Once again, another great video.
The timing on this is incredible, I've been playing Pokemon Mini again a lot lately! Via an emulator as I sadly am not lucky enough to have a real one. IMO, the best game on the console is "Pokemon Pinball Mini"!
Nice one love your work really do look up to you with your channel
Never stop learning 😊
100% satisfaction, as always
It looked quite familiar to me, at first, and after cleaning it you booted up the pokemon game, and I remembered:
"Aw yes, I loved those games, it was so long ago..." Thanks for this spark of nostalgia.
the war thunder sponsor was so unexpected because its so random and someone just starts TALKING??? THERE IS NO TALKING IN THESE VIDEOS
I own 3 of these in different colors (U.S versions), the purple one is in its original packaging, they use to be fairly cheap, around $40 and I remember finding them being sold all the time. Now they're ultra expensive but they're definitely not rare, more like there's a lot of demand for these.
Another fantastic video. We always get to see the finished final projects but what about the ones that end up breaking more while trying to repair them? Ever break that fragile glass screen while trying to remove it or just so epically awesome it never happened to you? Ever find a project, start it, get way too into it just for it not to work in the end? Would be interesting to see some of these less than successful projects too.
I never played Pokémon Mini before. Not even when I was a kid. Although I played some Pokémon Mini games in a GameCube game Pokémon Channel in 2004 when I was fourteen years old.
Greetings from Ireland and Merry Christmas!
I got the green (Chikorita) version for my birthday, I still have it and I have super fond memories of it!
Ah regresado el Ducktor QUE GENIAL!!!!!❤
Such a cool piece, never heard of it :)
what a curious little console! i've never heard of it. i wonder what else is out there that we never saw 🤔i don't know what kind of research you need to make on the devices you take apart, but you make it look so easy that it makes me think even i could do it. i love that! also, i've been wondering for a while now: can you reuse the hydrogen peroxide after you use it for whitening or does it lose the chemical properties required for it after being exposed to UV light for that long?
I only wish you had cleaned the corrosion off the board instead of leaving it, even if it's such a small amount it will spread and short the board again and you'll need to clean it again.
I really like your work!!It's extremely difficult and a great result in the end!😊
Despite the size, the resolution of the display seems pretty AMAZiNG. I think it could have at the position of GBA micro.
It's kind of funny, because a similar device, the PocketStation, actually had the same processor as the GBA. The GBA color screen and other hardware made much better games possible tho, as the PocketStation was just a simple mini-game console and memory card, kind of like the Pokemon Mini but without cartridges.
The Pokemon Mini actual processor was much weaker tho, only 4MHz vs 16.78MHz on the GBA/PocketStation.
@@VanisherXPAnd that is what this was intended to compete with - the Dreamcast VMU and PocketStation type devices. Something you could carry with you for a quick diversion. This though didn't link up to a console as a memory card or interact with the console games.
This would keep me entertained for hours.
This guy makes it look so easy.
I've tried doing a restoration of my NES and now it only works when the tray is up and the A button on both my controllers works intermittently.
So satisfied to watch videos like this, it's great when when bring broken things back to life like this 😎👍👍❤️❤️
Oh the 2000's cellphones! One of the rarest moments in human history when "the smaller the better" could be said.
😂
To think I found you, watched how to fix up my GameCube controller… and now I own an Electronic Repair business!
