I Restored This Destroyed Gameboy Advance SP - Retro Nintendo Console Restoration

- In this video I will restore a Gameboy Advance SP. by Nintendo. The console is broken in half and it won't charge. Also the screen cable has been damaged and the screen need to be replaced. Gameboy Advance SP was finally the Gameboy everybody had been waiting for, it had illuminated color screen and battery. The screen was a huge upgrade from to the Gameboy advance which always needed good lighting to play it. Get your own GBA here (not the one on the video): amzn.to/3bF0Ezb
To open the console I needed my screwdriver set. I will link it bellow. Like the other Gameboy consoles this need a tri wing (aka Y-tip) screw driver to open. the shell. On the inside a small phillips screw driver is needed. The console doesn't have many parts so it's easy to dissasemble, however if the screen is undamaged you need to be very careful with the orange ribbon cable.
When I connected the charging cable it wouldn't charge. Usually this is because the charging port is dirty and/or corroded and cleaning it usually removes the problem. Another issue can be a completely dead battery. If you remove a battery from working device you will notice the console does the same thing, the light turns on for a second and turns off. If the light doesn't even flash, you know the issue is not in the battery. In rare cases the issue could also be a damaged mother board which could be much harder to repair.
The screen was also broken. In theory the cable could be replaced, at leas with micro soldering, but new reproduction and original screens are easily available so usually it's not worth spending hours on trying to solder it.
The shell was destroyed so I bought a replacement shell. The replacement shell have everything including the lens, buttons and new screws, except the hinges. But they come with caps that cover the actual hinges. New hinges are available but it doesn't always feel like the original hinges so I will use the old ones if they still work.

Even though it was damaged, I think it’s obvious this was appreciated and very much loved by its previous owner-it deserved the restoration/refurbishment

would love to see you restore a DS sometime. the DS Lite especially had weak and breakable hinges.
I remember snapping a couple ds lites in half because i was pissed off at a game or something when i was a kid with anger issues back in the day, so this is true
My DS Lite snapped only one side in half. It still works, but the topscreen is dead

I remember I once set down my DS on a table and I guess it was just a little too hard for the thing because the power lights popped off from the rest of the body

@@nickolaswilcox425 idk man I dropped mine once from less than a meter off the ground onto carpet and the hinges broke, and a fragment of the part covering the ribbon broke off. I fixed mine with super glue tho lol and it’s hideous

The best thing about this unit was the backlight! After all those years of external lights to see our screens 😂
Backlights were a real game changer to handhelds. Li-ion batteries that were chargeable in situ were great as well.
Yes! I had an original Game Boy and loved it but it was annoying playing at night. I know they came out with a light attachment for it but my folks said no because they knew I’d playing when I was supposed to be sleeping.

And she's sitting snug in her BFGB adapter thing that has both built-in front lights, magnifying screen to see those pixels better, and speaker for hearing all those beeps and boops from my GB games. (Sadly the dock is missing the front panel that goes over the GB's buttons)
It was the AGS-101 model that had a good backlight and vibrant display.
Seeing a GBA like this really makes me go back to times when life was easier. Times when the only thing you had to do is play, learn and have fun. I'm almost 30 now and sometimes I wish I could go back...

Things like the apprehension to buy replacement hinges because of the different way they feel is what in my opinion sets you apart from other repair channels. You care a lot about that genuine feeling.

just saying, having it being broken in half does not affect it turning on and off as the ribbon cable seemed to be fine and plus the top half could be completely broken and the system would still turn on and off as the motherboard is all that is needed to be working for the system to power on and charge. Only the hinge was affected by it being broken in half. Not I get this is most likely a joke and I am being a stick in the mud and there are gonna be 20 replies to this comment saying "r/woosh" but I just wanted to put this out there. Good day

Fun fact, the silver Game Boy Advance SP and Pokémon Ruby were my first personal handheld console setup at 6 years old in 2004. I can still decently remember the day my parents surprised me with it, I was ecstatic. This made me so happy man, Ive also binged all the other console videos too. This is what I call fighting the good fight for childhood nostalgia

You can’t restore objects with deep scratches, there’s just no way to polish it without ruining it

You can fill in these places. What is broken can be repaired with plastic glue, this melts the plastic back together.
Of course, it's a lot more work. In addition, the entire shell has to be repainted later.

For me, this is my favorite handheld video game console of the time. I had 3 of these things when I was younger and there’s nothing more satisfying to me than the hinge opening/closing sounds.

Looks great! I truly appreciate your restoration of old tech. My favorite was my old GBC, which I can’t find. It was my 2nd handheld, although my DSi XL is a close 2nd.
I just wanted to say I’m a big fan of this channel and a few months ago I shattered the hinge and some of the body of the shell on mine so my dad and I just used this video to help put the internals into a new shell! Excellent work mate!
It's weird to think that the child that played this to death could have a child of their own. Seeing things like this with care put into them like stickers is always bittersweet.
This SP fulfilled its purpose in life until the very end, by being an object of affection and abuse by its owner. 👍

Edit: since commenting this, i have received a used gameboy advance sp and repurchased Namco museum and bought my first Pokémon game! (if we don't count pokemon go which i hardly ever play because i never leave my house)
For me it was spending Saturday nights and Sunday Mornings replaying Pokemon Sapphire and Leaf Green.

This was one "loved" gameboy. The stickers all hold a story. Absolutely amazing I had a pearl pink one I was always playing Pokemon or Dogz.

I used to work in Device Repair, and seeing filthy devices were my least favorite part. Most of them were iPhone 11/XRs and these phones would be so dirty that there would be dirt on the INSIDE of the device. I would always take the time to clean it inside and out, do something nice for the customer, and I loved seeing their reactions, "it looks brand new!" "Oh my Lawd!!" (south eastern US) and it would always make me laugh and make me feel proud of what I did as a technician. Just a fun little story, that's all!

He could have glued the hinges and kept the shell and probably replaced the ribbon cable and kept the screen.

Man...so much nostalgia. The Gameboy Advanced SP was my #1 favorite handheld console back in the day. Sonic Advanced 1, 2, 3, and Sonic Battle, were my most played games. I even used to have the Sonic X episodes back when movies/TV being released as cartridges.

I bought a mangled GBA SP Tribal from a 2nd hand tech shop a few years ago, which had a messed up battery, and superglue on the lower half, where there was a massive crack.
I did a full shell and battery replacement (one memorable moment was having to physically BREAK the superglued shell to get at some of the screws), and I still have it to this day.

I always love these. It feels so much like nostalgic love. These things are broken, unwanted. They nonetheless contain so many memories. Love at the stickers! Even if we know nothing, we know the owner loved pokemon, clearly loved this machine. And you make it work again, make it like new. Ready for new memories. That feels like a kindness to me, a kind of love I can’t name.
It's like the same sad nostalgia you get from watching Brave Little Toaster, but it's a game boy instead.
Yeah I was going to buy one but I saw too many 1-Star reviews so I bought a DS instead and the DS can play GBA Games. And the DS works great!

I had a red one for the better part of 8 years, I think I still do somewhere, how many long car trips this thing kept me entertained on is countless. The startup sound and the fact that this dude puts in Pokemon Ruby is like being 10 again xD

Same! Sadly the L and R buttons started to get all funky on me. I suspect from watching all these videos, that there is some dirt or debris stuck in there.

Still have my red one I pull out every so often. One of the best handhelds IMO as the backlight was such an upgrade to the game boys. Don’t ever plan on getting rid of it

So many great memories from my game boy advance. I was a newspaper gal in my block, I saved for months, I didn't know the games were sold apart. So the day I finally bought it, my mom gave me the cassete as a gift ❤
I remember when the SP was new. I was 4 when my brother got his and I got his Advanced as a hand me down. We still have them both, and they still work good as new. Don't use them much cus emulation exists, but it's fun to go back and play on the actual hardware every now and then.
I lost my old SP that had a Mario game in it at a daycare that my mom used to own :[ That was years and years ago, but I'm still sad about it. I got a new SP recently, and it's one the looks like a SNES!
The game boy advance sp was not the first console I owned. But it was the first one I bought for myself after 2 months of working. It was a red one. And my first game was pokemon leaf green.

Compared to all his other vids this one is actually easy, he just bought a bunch of replacement stuff and scrubbed the motherboard with alcohol a bit.

I had a blue Gameboy Advance SP back when I was 16 or so, with Pokemon Sapphire... the restoration was amazing, but the final part of the video was super effective!

The funny thing is that those are the Gen 4 gym leaders, and the GBA can only play up to gen 3, lol
One of the best parts of this video (or your other videos for that matter) is the Ducktor. I love the surprised look on his face when you open the GBA.

I definitely love the look of the replacement shell (and why it had to be done) but one of favorite parts of these videos when he makes the old shells look like new again!
Yeah, would be much more interesting to see the original shell and ribbon cable to be repaired. Felt a bit like cheating to me.

I always like the work you do, and this is great. Idk if this is restoration so much as rebuilding. Replace everything but the circuit board and you get a new gameboy!
I've been watching a lot of your videos recently, and watching this one made me want to get new housings for my GBA SPs. And watching this one again makes me look forward to opening up the GBA SP again that I botched one part of the housing with putting one of the longer Tri-Wing screws at the bottom It made a small plastic bubble. I hope to not make such a stupid mistake again. But this time I'm getting a Clear Blue - Glow in the Dark Housings, I don't want to deal with painted cases this time around. They either look nice or ugly.
