- Today I'm working on a vintage and rare toy, USAF GEMINI X-5 space ship, made in Japan in 1960's by Masudaya Toys Co.
I bought it on Ebay for 30 $.
The seller told me that he didn't know if it worked but by disassembling it, I had the bad surprise to discover it had already been modified before.
The engine was missing and the bulbs no longer worked.
It took me a month to restore but it was worth it, watch till the end to see this beautiful old toy in action.
Thanks a lot for watching !

That mechanism for making sound is genius.
Agree 😄 It's the funniest and most unexpected sound.
I wonder how many adults have cursed at this genius 😁
@@DemolitionManDemolishes Yeah, the second he turned it on I pictured a child playing with this toy in a living room and his parents getting crazy because of it lmao
Yes, the noise is unbearable after a few mintues 🤣🤣
@@DemolitionManDemolishes And how many previously harried now-grandparents have tried that in a store and both gone, "Oh, yep! We're getting THIS!"
I'm 63 and I had one of these, and it brought a tear to my eye seeing this.
Thanks for the memories.
Right, I know, I'm 63 as well.
The commitment to that paintwork was mind-blowing!!
All those dots...
@@DavidPlass I know. He probably just took at least two full days to make sure they were all done. And lined up right. He has such steady hands MAN. I love his personal enjoyment of his craft.
Yes, that was insane! For the first half of the video I wondered how he was going to restore the paint job and then it blew my mind once I saw his process.
you said it!
@@GlennTillemahe actually devalued the toy smh
You made a 62 year old man smile seeing this, I don’t recall having seen this, but most certainly had toys of this ilk…thank you, well done.
Same, I'm 63, I had a space toy named, Billy Blast Off. This kind of reminds me of it. I had many toys as a child, I can't remember them since it's been a long time ago, lol.
I'm impressed! You painted all those rivets one by one... And I didn't expect that astronaut spinning above the ship! 😅
I’m curious if the spinning astronaut is original… The figure itself seems to be made out of plastic and seems modern, but the mechanism for spinning him looks like it was already there, so I’m guessing the original piece was missing and couldn’t be sourced? Or perhaps the mechanism was meant for something else that was missing?
@@katehucks774 Yes, the original piece was missing and impossible to find alone
I’m also impressed how he was able to do those rivets and not to mention the lines on the space station. And everything else. He’s a pro.
Brilliant 👍😀
Originally it was a spinning radar thing.
i wish my mother had given me half of the care and attention that you have given this 1960s japanese space toy
Hugs for you ❤
You're still here, friend - with internet access to watch relaxing vids like this. Your mother didn't do too terribly.
Honestly one of your most impressive restorations - lots of fine detail that you replicated excellently!
Thank you very much😉
@@OldThingsNeverDie-
I might have already asked you this before... Do you have any fail videos?
If so I think it would be interesting to see that kind of process
I was impressed when the pulled off the tiny pinstripe tape for the grid. Subscribed when the marker came out for the rivits
A sweet memory. It was my gift for my birthday in 1969
Congrats on the best Toy Restoration ever presented on TH-cam. Amazing...AMAZING Work
Thanks, mate 😉
What a great toy and an absolutely superb restoration. Thank you Old Things.
Thank you Francis 😉
I restore things too but mate , to be honest , I don’t think I’m able to remake the paint you did to this toy ! Amazing 🤩
22:21...That anti-fall system is just GENIUS! Fantastic restoration job!
I'm 63 and it looks Like a lot of people my age
are watching This class a total restoration 👍
I'm 62 and when I grow up I want to be just like you!
WOW! GREAT JOB!! I had similar toys when I was a child, and I NEVER thought sound would be created in that way!!
This restoration deserves a big applause. 👏👏
Thank you 👏
Hand of a brain surgeon by day, restoration aficionado by night! Holy cow! Those dots couldn't be any straighter with a computer! Thank you for sharing all your incredible and totally amazing restorations!
Thank you very much😉
Brilliant! I would've been so stoked to have something like that when I was a kid in the '70s!
I was not born in the 70's, but the kids were lucky at this time indeed. 🤠
Thanks for restoring this toy. Watching your video really brings back my memory of playing the exact same one when I was a kid.
That is an absolutely adorable toy!
You gave it a second life. 😊
Miraculous restoration....amazing work on a toy we dreamed of in the 60's!!
Wow. Masterful work. Love those old Atomic Age space toys.
The levels of patience, care and detail for restauration videos like this is always astonishing :D
Wow! That has got to be the most meticulous and amazing restoration. I’ve ever seen! How I wish toys could still be made as high-quality and as fun as this nowadays.👍
I was so pleased to see you REPAINT all those details rather than resort to all stickers and decals. Super job!!👍👍👍
I had one like this as a child! And it was my favorite toy. As a fact, it took 40 years to find one on eBay! And it is almost mint condition. It is on a shelf in my ah den, and it still brings a smile remembering the hours I played with the original one. That is really nice work on this.
Gorgeous restoration! I had forgotten how thorough you were and was half afraid you'd just scrub up the body shell and be done. When you sand blasted it I was like "YAAAAASSS!!" 😂
Samesies.
Honestly, I have thought to keep the body like it was and just varnish it but I told myself "Come on, you can do it" 😆
@@OldThingsNeverDie- It was worth it! Looks lush being properly redone.
I like the objects you restore, which are interesting and unique. You have done a great job on all the ones you have done.
Thank you 👍
Making all those white dots by hand is the most insane but impressive shit I’ve seen. Damn. They came out perfectly straight.
Straight, straight... Don't look too closely 😂😂
@@OldThingsNeverDie- lmfao good enough at least! Hahaha incredible job!
Ha! I know the secret - the layer of clear coat underneath. Make a mistake and clean it off.
That is a totally amazing quality paint job..
WOW! 😱
This is one of your best restoration projects. The amount of time, money and effort put in this toy really worth it.
You made it back from the past as new 😊👍.
And I took a great delight to restore it, thank you 😉
I loved the restoration, especially where you used the paint marker to paint the rivets.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I have missed your videos! This is beautiful!!!
Thank you very much 😉
An amazing amount of work! I wish I had a man who treated me with such care and love.🥰
Almost as beautiful as the restoration and the ingenuity of how the toy works, must be your workshop. So many tools, so many ingredients, all seemingly perfect for the job at hand. Wonderful!
Beutiful restoration of a truly unique toy from a lost era. Thank you for make it an original restore instead of taking shortcuts. You, Sir, are one of the very few who can call themselfs "Toymaker" as a profession.
Wow painting all those rivets!
I told myself "don't tremble, don't tremble" 😅😆
This game reminds me of my beautiful childhood and the most beautiful era that passed in my life....I experienced beautiful memories while watching this video. Thank you
👏👏👏 this is something i can't do😅, Beautiful 🧑🚀
thank you for satisfying my OCD and perfectionism , this is not just a restoration but a great art and therapy ❤
Wow! Amazing job. Not only on the metal work, but the paint job … most folks would have half-assed it, but you went the extra mile. So good!!!!
As a Japanese, I'm so proud that this toy is made in Japan.
Most toys like this were made in Japan way back when...they were the best !
I dont give out complements very often because people cant even reply and say a simple thank you. Nobody has manners anymore. I do Marine repair and restore Muscle cars. The restoration process is off the charts from one tradesman to another suburb bravo mate bravo job well done! It was jaw dropping love these old battery operated toys.
Wow. Not just a restoration. I'm certain it's in better condition than it ever was, even when it was originally made!
This was spectacular restoration work! I had a toy vaguely similar to this in the late 60's, "Billy Blastoff" I think it was called. A white plastic Space Craft, a moon crawler, I think a Saucer, and a bunch of ancillary parts, all powered by batteries you put in the astronaut's backpack/oxygen case on his spacesuit. Haven't thought about that in decades!😊
Soon as I saw this I recognised it, I had one when I was a kid in the 60s … fantastic to see one again… thank you ..
The amount of effort that went into this restoration is just amazing, even small details that nobody will ever see, like the gears and battery compartment.
Toys for this age are full of dreams. Thank you for your great work. 👍
It is clear you are a master painter. The precision location of the white dots which were most likely hand painted at the factory by Japanese craftsman using a brush and your reproduction using a pen was amazing. I too am 62 and remember these "cheap" toys in the store still being out of reach for my family. I love them now more than ever. When in Japan, I saw many on shelves as displays of the kinds of toys that excited the Japanese as well. As interesting is the boxes they came in. The original Japanese market boxes are as cool as you might imagine.
My complements to your incredible patience in both the thin striping and the tiny rivets.
Kinda makes you wanna be a kid again! Great job. Unbelievable work!
Very clean and masterfully done.I congratulate you for bringing a beautiful toy to life.
When I was a young boy, my parents took me to the market and bought me a tin motorized robot. I loved it, but it broke in a year or so.
I took it apart, and found that some parts of it were made from recycled tin cans, because the original pictures drawn in the tin cans were still visible in the inner surface of the tin parts.
As you were disassembling the Gemini rocket toy, I was half hoping to see "good quality canned peach"written on the inside.
I loved the video, supreme work as always. ❤
It warms my heart to see the care taken to bring these old items back to new again.
Same here. I love when people take things that weren't used for ages and make them look good again!
@@BrianEugeneLee-xq2hy 😀👍
I really admired your patience in doing this toy a real testament to your ability. I really enjoyed this project and watching you, thank you sir.
$30 is such an amazing deal for this - looking at them on eBay right now they're selling for 5-10x that much. Awesome find and beautiful restoration. Also, I wasn't alive during the days of the Space Race, but what a time to be alive it had to have been when everyone was so transfixed on the final frontier. 🌌⭐
The level of perfection you apply to these mass-produced tin toys is a joy and a pleasure. This has to be even better than new in some aspects. What an adorable spaceship.
I saw this roll up at the beginning and I was so excited to see this toy restored!!! A lot of interesting parts I’ve not seen before👍. Absolutely epic attention to all the tiny details! ……. ….. …… I mean come on! Couldn’t figure out where the spaceman came in until you attached it to the top of the ship. I was wiggling with excitement for the battery insertion, but when you turned it on and I saw the spaceman flying around the ship I seriously exclaimed with glee. Thank you so much for all your time and money to bring this toy back. And thanks for sharing this clip.❤❤
look at all these assemble details which required alots of handwork. this little toy made 1 child smile and many families make their living on t he other of the globe
I am always in awe at the amount of thought and engineering put in those toys.
I love restoration videos and I watch a lot of them on TH-cam. This is mesmerizing and clearly the BEST video!!!!!❤❤❤❤
I am stunned. I was expecting the refinish to be done with decals of some sort, but you did it all in paint. Amazing work!
That was beautiful. The white pen work is honestly incredible! Thank you for such an honest and true to the original, restoration.
This restoration is off the charts!! With so many fakes, what a joy to see real talent...
The toy and the restoration, two masterpieces!
That is absolutely awesome. Toys from my childhood. Awesome memories. Thank you
When I covered the car cover with a blaster, I was worried about what would happen to the paint and design of the front, but I was impressed by the use of thin tape and posca to bring the design back to life. You've done a good job! bravo

Beautiful work! You were so patient painting all of those dots and sanding the dome, not to mention all of the masking you had to do! Thanks for sharing your talent.
Awesome. Another piece of history saved from the trash.
This toy looks so cool. It captures the colors of the era and makes me kinda want this
Such a treasure !
I'm so glad a talented person like you took care of it (I'd have probably ruined it myself...).
Thank you so much !
😂😂 Thank you !
It had an anti fall device!? Wow! I don't believe most modern toys have those kind of mechanism. That was a great restoration! You brought it back to life.
wow stunning result! what a unique toy! besides that, it's always nice to hear birdsongs outside your workshop
the attention to detail you pay makes me so, so happy
I could watch this all day! Amazing restoration job! 🤩
Amazing work! That would probably fetch $1,000 on the collectors market now.
The before / after and the restoration itself are really remarkable 🤩👍
Brilliant restoration mate - the paint job alone worth an Oscar! 🤩🤩🤩
Watching you do the body of the ship was incredible! The detail was complex and it looks amazing!
Thank you Paul 😉
You must have the patience of Job. It's just wonderful watching you go through your projects so carefully to restore them so beautifully.
So inspiring, but I know I would've lost patience taking the first little thing apart.
It's wonderful to see what actually went into creating these projects.
Such a huge amount of work !!! For a perfect result. Thank for bringing this toy back to life. Delightful video ❤️
Wow, Absolute Next level Restoration For This Toy! Immaculate Attention To Detail! "Bravo Zulu" From a 20 Year Navy Vet! Very Cool!
Watching the detail work with the paint markers was riveting.
Watching a master craftsman work is so soothing and fascinating. Great work.
Your a madman! All those little white dots? Insane!
What child wouldn’t be so excited to get this Christmas morning or on their birthday. An absolutely beautiful restoration, I want one now 😂
❤😢 feel touched by what you did, and I laughed that you always have the unthinkable tools and ways to do it. Most of all, I am Very Glad that people like you EXIST!
Your attention to detail is unparalleled!!
Absolutely amazing! I never take anything apart because I know I'll never get it back together again...lol.
Thank you!
Tremendous amount of work. I can't believe you took the time to paint all the rivets. Bravo!
A few hours of work, the hardest was not to tremble 😅
EVERYTHING about this is AMAZING!!! I am speechless.
Thank you 😉
Dude, I think you’re one of the best restores. I love watching your videos. Keep them coming.
Beautiful work and very therapeutic to watch, thanks.
Top notch.. a real restoration( no brown mud in sight)
Me emocionó mucho!!! Gracias y saludos desde Argentina
Paintjob was insane. Respect 🫡
The paint and craftsmanship is amazing.
That's a lot of work! Amazing restoration! Yes, I remember those days when almost all the toys were either made in Japan, Hong Kong, or the States.
