Love the kitchen! The only thing I'd suggest is to make the cabinets go all the way to the ceiling. The tops of cabinets are terrible to clean and get so much grease and dirt stuck on them. No space above means less cleaning and more space!
Retired interior designer here. Not wanting to give advice where it is not needed, but I really think the cabinet over the sink needs to be shorter, in other words, you need more clearance above the sink. Often kitchens are designed with a window over the sink, so perhaps you don't even want a cabinet there, but a couple of open shelves or art or something.
I actually love the cabinets like this! I think it looks better combined. I'm glad you went to see this other lady at IKEA. I never doubted the 1st guy, but it seems like this lady has more experience now that I've seen both. Her design looks amazing!
I really like the glass panel cabinets with the solid ones. It looks so nice. You might not want to have everything displayed so that way it gives you the option. If they’re out of stock when you want them it’s probably a good idea to wait for them.. getting the kitchen you love will be worth it in the end as you’ll be using it for many years to come! Love seeing all the progress you’re making!
we have a similar ikea kitchen and we mixed solid with glass doors. Glass doors for all of our cute jars, and solid for stuff that just doesn't look as nice. Also if you don't mind doing a bit yourself, you can get most of the kitchen done and then just put in the doors you wait for later. The cabinet itself is all the same, it's just the doors that are different!
Will you be leaving a little memento in the wall somewhere for the next owners to find? It would be so cute to put a little sewing kit or something in there 😊
I have the glass cabinets from Ikea, and I'm glad I got them. A couple things you should know: Ikea's upper cabinets are deeper than typical upper cabinets. They stick out more than your previous ones probably did. I have the glass cabinets above my sink, and I hit my head on them sometimes. I recommend making some space for your head above the sink. Also, with the glass cabinets you will need to get the glass shelves. We got the regular MDF shelves first because I didn't want to have to worry about fingerprints on the shelves, but they looked horrible when seen through the window in the doors.
It makes me happy watching you make the house into your home. The table is beautiful and the chairs and bench will look lovely around it. When you feel overwhelmed by a big project, it’s a good idea to switch to a simpler, less time consuming project (the handrail refinishing is a good example). The sense of satisfaction you get from completing a task, and the joy you get from seeing it, will give you extra energy to get back to the bigger project.
Take it from a 60 yr old - if you can, take your top cabinets all the way up to the cornice, otherwise you will have to regularly clean off all the grease and dust that accumulates up on top! Totally yucky!
8:00 its a railing. Really enjoy you sharing all this with us. I have always lived in apartments my entire life, never a single family home and I am 61 now. Living vicariously through you!!! 🥰 The combo of glass and solid is a beautiful look.
@@sofiaottoman Yes, another perfect word. Railing, Bannister, handrail, so long as it helps you ascend and decend securely and safely, life is good. Always be sure your rail brackets are solid metal and not simply decorative brackets made of pot metal. It will snap with pressure. Learned the hard way in my rental apartment. You want something made with steel. Any finish you like but Steel. Been there, done that. Steel😶
Stair-rail is my go-to. Probably a regional thing, but I would only call it a banister if it had many supporting rods. If it's a rail attached to the wall, to my family, it's a stair-rail or hand-rail.
I call the hand rail on the stairs a banister. It's funny the words you find you don't know sometimes! I speak Danish as a second language and occasionally realise I have absolutely no idea what the word is for something 😆
You are so very sweet and I know that as I write this you are all moved in and spending your first night in your home already. But In this clip you are so tired and trying to keep up on your postings with us out here. I feel for you as you have worked thru this move and renovation. Your enthusiasm and excitement for what you want to do is a huge motivator. The tiredness will be replaced with some rest and sleep which to date you may be experiencing, I HOPE! Owning a home always leaves you with some kind of project to do, either big or small. But it's yours, no one else's and all decisions you make for yourselves. I think that is the big asset to owning your own home. Thank you for letting me sit in on what your doing in your days. I just love watching you and all the creative things you are doing, wether it be sewing, or hair styles or this project now. :)
When I remodeled the kitchen a couple of years ago, I put glass fronted cabinets on either side of the sink, with the rest of the uppers having regular doors. It’s nice to have the bank of uppers broken up with the glass doors. You have to be ok with having everything in the glass cabinets on display. We have glasses in ours, mostly uniform, but the various, colorful water bottles that are in one of them are also in display.
Yes stain your wood way darker. It will match with the flooring and the green wall colors you are going for. I would love to see a shopping video if possible next time for house decor and furniture ☺️
I know it feels like an overwhelming task at hand, but I PROMISE you, once complete and settled you will reflect on all your hard work of your 1st home with pride and excitement!!!! Wishing you continued success!!!
Hang in there; the big messy part is all most over! Thank goodness you have family and friends to lend a hand to get the job done quickly. I think once you're moved in, everything will feel much calmer. For me, it is the going back and forth from my current home to the new one that I find so unsettling. You and Robert are doing a great job, and I cannot wait to see the new kitchen; I am so excited for you! Picnic lunch in your garden on Saturday, xoxo's Sandie🤗
So excited for you and Robbert! I know that the stress and anxiety of a reno/move (goodness, you are doing both at the same time!) can be overwhelming, but continue to take those moments to destress and know that everything will work out. In a couple of weeks, you will be moved and even though you will still be renovating, at least you can check off the move box and go from there. I agree with the comments here regarding mixing closed and open cabinets, it looks great. Also, I just adore your garden! Thank you for taking us along on this journey.
Don’t rush it. Enjoy the process. I’m three years into my second total house renovation. It’s totally possible to live in a renovation project as long as there is running water and a loo.
Oh, but don’t have curry for dinner if you are having to wash up in a plastic bath. It came out eventually but for a while my new bath was a bit orange. In this situation use a bucket. Other advice, hang on to the big ten litre plastic paint buckets with lids. Endlessly useful to throw things of all kinds in.
That on the wall is a Banister!, also a railing, depending how old a person you are. Destress is such a good idea as at this time you will need it. If things don't go as planned, be very flexable or the stress rises by yards. Change the things you can , know what you cannot change, take deep breaths, this is, in my book one of the worst things that I have ever done.....'remodel a home"., it seems the mess goes on forever and it drives me nuts! Love your vlogs, no matter what you post. It's hard to try to do everything your doing right now. I'm amazed how well your doing..... Find things to laugh about ..... like the 7 dwarfs, whistle while you work.... Hugs!
I am so happy for you. I dream of my own home. Whenever I'm looking for a new place, just to look (I can't afford it), I focus on the kitchen, for me it must be large, then on the arrangement of rooms and bathrooms, but the most important thing is where I put the Christmas tree 😅 Seriously, there is nothing more important for me, because the place has to be perfect
I know it's trendy to have open shelving or glass front cabinets, but I think it is a BAD idea. Unless you want a lifetime of trying to make what's stored in your cabinets neat and picturesque, which is not what I want in storage. Just one more area to worry about. Sometimes you just want to stick a bunch of stuff into the cabinet and close the door on it all.
We had an IKEA kitchen in our old house. We’ve nearly finished renovating our house that we’ve lived in over four years. It’s been hard work, and nearly broke our marriage. We bought a kitchen from Howdens, and we’ve had nothing but problems. I still IKEA is much better quality, and if after a year or so you need a new drawer/cupboard you can still purchase one. Where as Howdens it’ll be disclosed and then you have a problem. I think with kitchens as long as you get a good fitter, ( my hubby), you can’t go wrong. Good luck in your new house, it looks as if you’re doing a great job, and won’t take long to get it round to your way.
I had ikea kitchen at my last house, had for eight years and it was brilliant. Stupidly moved house to somewhere with a ridiculous kitchen set up and can’t use ikea. I did use it in the shower room though and found some of the kitchen units had dramatically decreased in quality in the decade since I bought previously, which was very disappointing. Hope they are not all like that. I reckon the previous one would have lasted a good thirty years.
That dining table looks amazing! I hope the move was great and I look forward to further updates. I shall be helping my dad to relocate a wardrobe in our house tomorrow, which could be fun.
Hoi Lucy!
looking absolutely picturesque scrapping wood(?) in the garden! I had to do a double take it almost looked green screened its gorgeous what a beautiful backdrop!
Although you had some unexpected things coming up I do think it is going pretty well right! Also if it is possible I would see if the bedroom can be finished first because then you can at least sleep already in your new home when you actually move in! Good night sleep is always best when having to do still a lot of work. I do think your house is going to be really nice, so keep up the good work it will all be worth it in the end!

The railing you use to walk up the stairs, I call a banister. I'm from Missouri, the Midwestern US.
In the UK we call that part of the stairs a handrail or banister.

The one thing that irked me with the kitchen design was that the sink didn't look entirely lined up with that top white cabinet. They just looked some centimeters off from each other, but perhaps that's just the drawing. And then also I'm just used to having a larger fridge section on that one side and just seemed like a bunch of dead empty space with no extra cabinetry there. I would have put more cabinetry there for a pantry or dry goods. But perhaps that could be like a cute desk area instead, as another option, with some cute artwork to kind of break up that section.
Thanks for sharing your journey! I feel like I’m living vicariously through all your adventures! :) Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
