  • Hi everyone,
    It's Jess here and welcome or welcome back to my channel.
    If you're here for the first time. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.
    In today's video, we're going to make some Vintage skirts with 2 styles. They're super easy to make and you don't have to worry about installing the zipper. Because we will just need to cut some basic rectangles and use the elastic band for this DIYs.
    To make this DIY, please check out my basic information below:
    - Sewing machine: Merrit Joyful Sewing
    - Material: 2m of soft cotton fabric for each DIY
    - My body measurements: 82-64-92cm. I'm 165cm tall and usually wear Small size.
    I learn sewing by myself. So some of my techniques might be not correct or in a professional way. But I tried and they worked for me. So I want to share with you the way I made them.
    Therefore, I would love to hear more sewing experiences from you. Please join me in this journey by being a part of it here www.jessdangdiy.com/
    And stay connected around social media together:
    - Instagram: / jessdangvn
    - Pinterest: / jessdangdiy
    - Facebook: / jessdangdiy
    For business, please send to me email: jessdangdiy@gmail.com
    Have a lovely day everyone!
    Cheers,
    Jess

    For the second skirt, I didn’t have enough fabric from one length to make 1.5 times my width, so I cut two rectangles and sewed them together for the length. With the gathers, it isn’t at all obvious. Just thought that tip might help a beginner. She does this in the first half with the three tiered skirt but I hadn’t watched that since I liked skirt #2 better. Also I found “no roll” elastic. It’s much nicer than plain elastic.

      She basically moved all the gathered material to the back so that the front band was smooth and the back had the gathers then sewed a line down the waist band to keep it in place.. I think this step is based on preference..

    Hi Jess
    You make it look so easy!!
    I wanted to know in what way should i cut the fabric? Or better yet which way to fold it (grainline)
    And can you please talk about it more in your videos when you’re cutting the fabrics?
    And also how do i insert lining if needed? (To the second skirt)
    Thanks!!

    • @JessDangDIY
      @JessDangDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way to cut the fabric is depend on the meter of the fabric you have. Usually you can cut by the length. However, sometimes you have to cut by the width as the printing or detail of the fabric by that way

    • @JessDangDIY
      @JessDangDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When putting the elastic band through the fabric hole, you do it from the front to the back. So you won't pull too much fabric at the front. Or you can use the pin to hole the elastic band at the beginning to keep the elastic band moving at the front and just at the back

    Jess, On the second skirt I couldn’t understand the final instruction about the waist band. Were you pushing all of the elasticized gathers to the sides and making a flat front by sewing a vertical line down the elastic? I can’t wait to sew this from some green gingham fabric I have!

    • @JessDangDIY
      @JessDangDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did it to make the front look flat. So all the gathering fabric will be at the back of the skirt

    • @JessDangDIY
      @JessDangDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used the overlock stitching to finish the edge of the fabric first. Then I use a normal straight stitching with the maximum thread range to make a loose seam to create the gathering fabric. Then use the normal straight stitching to connect 2 layers together.

    I've tried making the 2nd skirt twice. The first time I followed the measurement directions exactly, and ended up not having enough ease in the hips at all. The 2nd time I added about 3 inches to the width to make up for it and still had it a little tight around the hips, but with excess baggy fabric under my butt. Could my shape be the issue? The skirt is sort of all one width and I'm an hourglass. Can anyone suggest a similar style for curvier figures?

    • @JessDangDIY
      @JessDangDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see you problem. As you have a hourglass body, the different between you waist size and your hip size is quite big. So it won't look nice at the back of the dress. I suggest you to make the first tier of the skirt bigger and maybe shouldn't get the elastic band at the waist to make the waist equal.
