we had success with the rtiangle on the right of Trips.Longy and Miggy, now we seem to have 2 good triangles on left and right with Hall,Willock and J7 on left and Tino, Longy and Gordon on right. May be better swapping over J7 and Gordon. Bruno in the middle feeds both sides. but would like Tonali to give us more in the Longy position long term.
2 years ago Tripps commanded the right and gave us solid defense and 10 assists and 10 goals and we had Targett as left fullback. Eddie bought very young fullbacks with massive potential but little experience - after massive coaching Tino/Lewis are starting to click. Also 2 years ago Eddie had bought the classy Botman to partner the slower Schar. With Botman's long term injury problems then Eddie has had to use lesser squad CBs. Today, no club in the Premiership would buy and start with Schar/Burn but Eddie is coaching the team to protect our CBs. Eddie's plan is buy someone like Guehi and partner with the faster Botman/Kelly. 2 years ago Willock was on fire but massive 18 month injuries meant the left midfield was unbalanced. Eddie bought Gordon (again massive potential but needing coaching) and this strengthened our left. Willock has had some terrible performances (WBA away last season...) but Eddie believed in him and finally a few weeks ago his quality came back allowing us to change our left midfield. 2 years ago Pope didn't have a dislocated shoulder and dominated high balls in his box - gradually Pope is getting the confidence to punch/catch crosses. Bruno/Linton/Gordon all had long summers and came back fatigued and off- form. Early season performances were awful. I'm excited to see how Eddie coaches our young £10million striker and how good he becomes for next season.
While I admire Longstaff as a player and appreciate his Geordie roots, I must address the misconception that we have won all the games he has started. Although this may be true, it is important to recognize that during those matches, our performance against teams like Wolves and Tottenham was subpar. I might make an exception for the Southampton game, as we were down to ten men. Our overall play was poor, and we were fortunate to secure a win. I believe Longstaff has a rightful place in the squad, but it is essential to acknowledge that his impact on the team is often overstated.
I agree with you George. The current good run of form asks more questions of our most recent big signings in Gordon, Tonali and Barnes and the fact that our midfield looks more balanced with Longstaff. Where do these newer signings fit in this 2022 tribute team! Are we really progressing, are we going to solve the right wing position or a striker to push Isak. Still a lot of work to do before, in my opinion, we start to progress as a team. Meanwhile it looks as if Eddie has found I way of progressing this season by reverting back to a style we played two years ago!
Yep. January is going to be very revealing I feel about where this season’s really going. I still think we’ll be outside top four and probably outside the top six if we don’t reinforce. Essentially, we’ll stay put.
Another thing, Sean Longstaff. When players around him turn up, he looks good. When players around him don’t, he looks inadequate. Players have been turning up suddenly, making him look transformed. He didn’t change, but perception of him did. He still does things that previously frustrated and drew him criticism but now, they’re not drawing criticism because the other players are the missing connection. When they’re not at the races, those “little things” make fans rage at him, because the pass to no one (who should have been there) or the run into space (that achieves nothing because the team mate doesn’t exploit it) become instead the link up pass that leads to a goal, the run that opens up the part for the attacker to move into. Fine margins.
Spot on. There’s a case for Longstaff being the most consistent player in the past few years. You’d get laughed out of most toon boozers for saying it. He said himself recently his job is to bring the best out of others and score goals. The two most important things in football.
Thank God for youtube and channels like you lads, these international breaks are total bollocks man. Must reek up in that room mind 😂 great as ever lads, cheers 🍻
I’d say the season is “turning” around, right now, but I also think that any progress we make this year is going to be defined as much by how the teams above us falter in comparison or have their own dips in form, as opposed to how much we’ve kicked on or built this year. If this year is a success then it’s going to be a revival season to my mind, a footballing “greatest hits of 2022” tribute, and no new material to speak of. I suppose I can handle that, 2022 was outrageously fun, but we still feel like a team that hasn’t improved overall.
Well said. I fear that us, our history of playing better against better teams than lower teams, that the next 'easier' run may not be as rewarding. Hope I'm wrong, of course, but after the warm weather break, we turn out well.
You hit the nail on the head. I think since joelinton and willock moved back on the left hand side the team looks a lot better , and back to the team of when we got champions league football. Hall looks the part now , as he looks comfortable and more experienced in the left fullback roll too…
Just watched Craig Hope answer questions sent to him whilst he is covering England. He is not convinced Newcastle will buy big in January and he said to buy big Newcastle would need to sell so it may well be a very quiet window and Eddie just getting on with what he has
Good take. I do think criticism of performances last season is harsh given the crazy amount of injuries and the fact that our squad was just not capable of adding in European games and it set us back almost a year
I think our performances have markedly improved, we definitely started off slow and sluggish. I noticed signs in the Everton and Brighton games that we were slowly coming back to our normal high intensity pressing style but it was quite sporadic even in the Chelsea game I saw moments that we were back. I’d rather us start off slowly then gather momentum during the season than start off great then fade off.. Also I’d like to say that Longstaffs energy in the midfield definitely has freed up Bruno Willock to play, longstaff covers a lot of ground and shields our back 4.. if you look back at history most successful teams have had a selfless grafter in the middle who doesn’t necessarily get the plaudits but provides a vital role in the functioning of the midfield. I’ll name one Michael Carrick. He hardly ever got mentioned but he was one of the first names on fergies team sheets and that was down to the role he provided. Longstaff is similar in that respect imo
I don't want to be negative as I'm actually looking forward to games again. My doubts over Eddie still remain, moving Joelinton out of midfield was a turning point for me but he's always played his best football for us on the left. The issue for me is Eddie has to juggle players around hoping to find a formula for his rigid system then sticks with it religiously I wonder if a higher level coach adjusts the system to get the best out of our best players. Tonali should start every game but not in Eddie's system.
Great video. Totally agree on all points. Especially with regards to willock. I said to friends earlier this season that he adds pace and goal threat from central midfield position that the others just don’t provide! Be interesting if the current formation works to January. Do you stick with it or go and look for that right sided winger/midfield player?
The most significant change for me was incorporating both Joelinton and Willock into our squad, which has presented a direct threat to all teams. Moving Joelinton, who is not a specialized midfielder and struggles with zonal positioning to receive the ball, to a wide position has been particularly impactful. His powerful runs and ability to initiate attacks have been formidable. Additionally, his strength and willingness to support on the wings have allowed our full-backs to play more freely, enabling them to overlap confidently. This adjustment has made us a much stronger team overall.
Keeping Isak fit is a must. He looks a totally different player when he's free from injury. Makes the defenders job so much harder when he's willing to do the rough and tumble part of a strikers role
I agree with your collective analysis and l anticipate at least one quality addition to the squad this winter, it might be Guehi if Parrish has come to his senses.
@@GeordieJournos you are not to be taken seriously if that is your reply. We bought him under Bruce thinking we could transform the left-sided forward into a number 9. Then, an in-game fluke move by Howe, shifting him to CM through 10-man necessity/duress, made clowns believe he was a CM because he can do a bullying job there. Stop being clowns. If you are journos, work with the facts. Do not follow the takes of hyper-online supporters and do your journo jobs. Stop being swayed by ill-informed folk. Do your jobs, so-called journos. Be leaders with the facts instead of running alongside sheep. Stop following the crowd for clicks and clout.
During the Real Madrid galactico era, they famously won nothing. They sold their work horses and local lads - one of them being Makelele. Their team didn’t have balance despite them upgrading on him from a technical viewpoint. As much as we love our Tonalis and Brunos, there is always going to be a place for the likes of Longstaff.
Great video lads. I do wonder re Longstaff, if we are performing better now, do we try with Tonali again? I think Sean is needed against teams that have more possession but when we are duking it out with teams where we have the majority of possession, surely Tonali is the choice? Could we work better with Tonali now big players have kicked up their levels? Is Tonali a victim of bad performance games? Who knows but we have to fit him in, you cannot have a player with his talent and not get him in the team! Is Eddie still working on him fitting in the team the way he did with Gordon/Hall/Bruno?
I just know one of these five will focus on longstaff, so won’t bother. The geordie bias is ridiculous and the “he does the unseen”, “positional sense”, “running” rhetoric is nonsence. A squad player at best. A lifelong NUFC fan non geordie. I have no sentiment for Longstaff, so look at the situation with an objective pair of eyes

I agree partly, however I also think Longstaff gets made a scapegoat when other high profile midfielders don't play well.

@ricardovosse3841 absolutely, there's no coincidence we play better as a team when Longstaff plays. Statistics don't lie.

International football outside major tournaments sucks balls. Fact!
Ha Ha ! What must it reek ? What you trying to say about the three musketeers ? 😷

After the Forest away performance, I’m keen to see how we perform at Palace and Ipswich. Games you expect us not to lose but this is Newcastle 😅

Joelinton was a left-sided forward at Hoff before coming to Newcastle. What are you on about?
You been living under a rock? Everyone was calling him a midfielder six weeks ago. - L

Sorry, but what is going on in the background in the 2nd half of the video? Distracting me the whole time while trying to listen haha
A normal season we're way behind the top 4. It's kinda hiding how bad we've been
So negative.......go and support someone else!! Good run to Xmas and we can be up and around top 4....all to play for!!
Dear all,
Canny video as always👍
Regards,
howe come Jordan won't say " shithousery" but he will say "half arsed" ? You can't say one without the other mate 😊
