You just can't dislike Sean Longstaff. Im modern football where many of them are overpaid, media-lobotomised, entitled divas, he's such a refreshing, unglamorous, humble "celeb" who is aware of his limitations on the pitch, acknowledges he's living the dream, but at heart has remained a family man, a Newcastle fan, and just a good natured person. He's made the scapegoat quite a lot, and I think he's been a victim of the unfair expectations we put on homegrown lads... they string together a few decent cameos and we hope they're the next Shearer. Looked fantastic at Blackpool in League One and then looked very comfortable under a tactician like Rafa but it all fell apart under Bruce. Probably through a mixture of the injury, covid, poor coaching, and unfair fan expectations He's never gonna be a bonafide starter while the likes of Joelinton, Bruno, Tonali and Willock are fit, but he's living the dream and fair play for staying humble and likable. The bit where he treats every game like his last is very poignant. Life is too quick not to savour every moment!
I think he's representative of the vast majority of footballers, tbh. It's only a very small minority that are paid absolutely enormous salaries and act entitled. Most footballers are just your average, decent blokes.
Sean is a great squad player alot of the frustrations come from him starting alot more recently but with Tonali back you'll see the best of Longstaff stepping in when needed. Gives everything each time he plays.
Sean’s an unsung hero in that team. Does a lot of the dirty work that goes unnoticed. Sounds like a brilliant lad and we need to keep players like him. Stop the hate he’s one of our own.
Love how down to earth Sean is Sometimes wish the fans would cut him some slack just because he's a local lad, he gives 100% every game and he cost us nothing
One of the nicest lads in the game and one of our own, was lovely to my son when we have met him a couple of times and a better player than he is given credit for in my opinion.
Nice to hear a pov from a players whos also a fan and living the dream. Newcastle do have a good squad, Eddie has got them drilled. But injuries to key players like Botman have really hurt them over the past year. Would like to see them in the CL again
Longstaff is a beautiful guy, what a heart. I hate the hate he gets. If he wasn't good enough he wouldn't play. Pisses me off. Some fans do not know football though.. ❤Longstaff.
We took Toon Army Baltimore and Toon Army DC to watch Matty play for Toronto against DC United. There was about 40 Newcastle Fans in the crowd all cheering him on. Then we got to meet him after the match. I think Matty was chuffed to bits to see how many Newcastle fans were there, and was equally chuffed that we were there for him.
An unsung hero in our midfield, does the hard yards, keeps it simple and a very grounded young man, seriously hope hes still with us for many many years yet
Love this interview. Thanks so much. It was great to have some insight into the culture of our club. I am so proud to have been a Geordie supporter for over 65 years. So shows like this are just a pleasure. Thank you.
Loved this. The respect and admiration i have for sean only grows the more i hear him talk. Gives his all on the pitch and not afraid to admit when hes had a stinker. Bigger things to come soon. Howay the lads ⚫⚪
Love this. The lads make a really good point about when things are Not going well the kids who came through the Academy or local players are criticised more than other players. I think the reason for that is because we love our local players so much, that when the team is not doing well, the fans feel hurt by poor results and performances and those that we love most bear the brunt of our disappointment. Probably more education needed.
I never thought I’d see the day when two homegrown Geordies scored against PSG last year! I really hope we can take it to the next level and see them both get their hands on a trophy!
Cracking player. We lose a great portion of the games when he’s not involved. Runs his socks off, good passer, intelligent runs off the ball. We need Longstaff in our squad. Well spoken in this interview, seems a canny lad
@daniel4224 Well, he's played in the Premier League and the Champions League. What percentage of people who've kicked a ball get to say that? You don't get to play at that level by not being very good. Is he as good as others at his level? No. He didn't get there by being lucky. He's probably in the top 5-10 % of people who play football. It's not bad for not being very good. Try not to say stupid things in the future
@daniel4224 how can you just say that though? I literally don't understand some football fans. This guy is at the top league playing for one of the biggest clubs, so they're all wrong and you're right? He's just not good? Come on.
What you see is what you get with Longy - a genuine guy and underrated as a player. Interesting he picks out Botman as one of two world class players at the club.
I remember Sean being on loan at Blackpool when my son was in their youth team. He always seemed such a nice, humble, lad from a nice family. A rarity nowadays in the game and in life in general.
that's not true. he played never every match last season and we weren't very effective at all. the midfield was far too easy to play through. he runs and runs and runs but rarely affects the game. we need quality footballers, not duracell bunnies.
Will never understand some of the hate Sean gets. Local lad that gives his all for the shirt. Was a huge part of getting us top 4, scored two goals that got us to our first final in years, and got one when we battered PSG. One of our own. 🖤🤍
I don't get it either everyone has a bad side to their game like sean isn't the best at possesion play but we can say the same for tonali he isn't the best at defending and pressing like sean
He was very complimentary about Bruce. Considering Bruce hated him and thought he wasnt a good player. It destroyed Longstaff and he had to show real courage and grit to overcome the Cabbage
@zacksmith9864 I know what you're saying, but I don't like covering it up. It's the same across entertainment industries, you can never tell the whole truth
Nice lad sean, always had a smile on his face , don't understand the stick he gets , gets us some important goals like the psg game.and the 2 league cup semi final goals, the type of player to have in the squad
Sean longstaff is a proper good lad like. I always point out how underestimated he is because I think people overlook him because he's a geordie.other Geordie lads think they can do better ( if it wasn't for the injury or their parents breaking up) if the circumstances had been different.it honestly winds me right up.Ok he isn't Alan shearer or Peter Beardsley but he is a reliable midfield engine . Respect due to you lad 👊
Great to See Shearer getting some Toon players on! Sean is such a nice guy, gets far too much stick, vital to the squad, gives 100%. Isak & Botman are quality players for sure. cannot wait to see the Miley bro's play together, there are 4 of them! but youngest is at the Makems! Needs rescuing.
What a cracking show - just got to love Sean Longstaff. Really, really enjoyed that...also, can real fans make sure that they look after Sean on the match day BBC ratings as well please...😁
Sean gets a lot of stick from the fans but the season we finished 4th fans were saying he’s one of the first players on the teamsheet, Fans are very fickle at times. His level has maybe dropped since then but he hasn’t been the only one. On his day he’s still a good player
5:18 15 or so years ago in Scotland, Livingston played 4 brothers in a match and they were all on the pitch at the same time for a few minutes. Still a world record for a professional fixture if I’m not mistaken
50/50 on the pitch, like everyone can be at times but super nice lad. 🆗 hope we can have someone else from the team on this podcast. Can’t wait for Callum to come back but stuff him cos he does his own podcasts lol 😂
Although we've been in the doldrums now for quite a while Djurgården is the most succesful club in Swedish icehockey history. Remember when we signed his dad and everyone went "An Englishman?", but he turned out to be pretty good.
Obviously the local lads going to get the stick more because you’re supposed to be one of them, the one who fully understands and gets the club like a fan does.
What a cracking lad. He's a credit to the club. I hope he scores the winning goal in a cup final and goes down in history as a geordie legend.......🙏
Not a Newcastle fan but really like the way he spoke. Seems a genuine boy.
as oppose to trans?
Fair play mate, he's no Bruno but he's a genuine humble good northern lad. Works his arse off for his team 🙂
@@daniel4224 Read the roooooom ;-)

It's so important to have local lads at clubs. It bridges the gap between fans and teams, and inspires the next generation
I kna,, i wouldnt mind being lower down league if we had 5/6 Geordies in the team HTLs
Completely agree, winning trophies is overrated.
Alan's face when he explained walking out for the first time. Still feeling it.

For his standard of talent, he is definitely overpaid. Granted he's none of the rest though
United were supposedly offering £50 million for him, yet sold McTominay for half the price

True but it’s mad ppl take it out on the player himself as if he’s supposed to refuse to play when asked 😂
Great lad and he has surely played for longer than he would have expected to when Newcastle got the takeover
what a treat, Newcastle-centric pod after the (what feels like long) break from prem football. HWTL.
Makes a change from it always being the usual clubs on these things! And I'm not even a Geordie
can probably also do a leicester one and get vardy on the show or something
