    As a Newcastle fan I’ve seen a lot of attempts from TH-camrs trying to interpret Howes play style in videos like this, but IMO you’ve portrayed it the best. The positive mentality Howe has gave us is incredibly appreciated by us fans, we haven’t seen this type of positivity in over 15 years.
    One of my fears however is the triangular passing we seem to execute on the wings, with the reverse balls etc, it seems a bit too predictable and when we play the stronger teams in the league they always seem to shut it down quite well. It’ll be interesting to see Howe combat this in the future. Great video anyways.

      Another magpie fan here and have been for 20+ years, it's unbelievable to see how well we have been playing this season compared to the usual utter shit we have been used to. I remember whenever we used to face man u, it would be a definite 4/6- 0 lose and now we actually have a team. I can not wait to see what howe does to bulster and improve the team plus how we do in Europe.

    • @andrewphippsphillips1455
      @andrewphippsphillips1455 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've noticed this "flaw" where I'd say the stronger sides have "shut us down" we just don't seem to have a back up plan. This certainly happened in the home leg of the Carabao semi when we went off the boil and Bruno was sent off. When we go behind, we don't regroup and come back with a fresh strategy

    • @elliottrichmond6589

      @@andrewphippsphillips1455somewhat I think down to lack of attacking options. Towards end of season when we had a fresh group to pick from he was able to change it up, see Brentford away for eg. Mostly injuries have dictated team selection especially with only 4 senior midfielders one of whom also plays LW and 2 strikers.

    Great video mate, I'm a season ticket holder. The game against Brighton where we won 4-1 was such a battle of concepts, the Howe press designed to prevent playing it from the back vs De Zerbi's anti-press build up was one of the best games I've seen in a while from a tactical perspective.

    Good video but I disagree with Pope being poor with his feet, as a season ticket holder at NUFC I actually think he is average/ok on the deck. The reason why we don’t play short from Pope is because we have a massive advantage aerially and in duels for second balls. Joelinton, Willock, Longstaff, Wilson and Isak mean that we usually try to bypass another teams press by going long on purpose. Knowing we will win the ball most of the time. It does tie in with your ‘directness’ view as well! Good video though just thought i would share my take!

  • @Rallarberg
    @Rallarberg ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I see a little bit of legendary Norwegian coach Nils Arne Eggen (Rosenborg in the late 80s, throughout most of the 90s) in Howe. Eggen had "godfotteorien" (lit.: "the good foot theory"), where you emphasize and build upon the natural talent of a player rather than trying to make them fit your system and tactic, and that the whole (team) is way larger than the sum of its parts. The prime individual example in Newcastle is off course Joelinton, a player that was "forced" to mainly play as a striker throughout most of his carreer until Howe showed up, and Joelinton is now shining as a box-to-box midfielder.
    Eggen was also known for utilizing a very similar play style to today's Newcastle, and his Rosenborg side often took European giants by surprise, even making it past the Champion's League group stage twice with a (comparatively speaking) tiny club.
    Has Howe "secretly" been watching tons of Rosenborg matches from the 90s? Perhaps not, but the similarities are still there imho! 🤩

    • @dennisnielsen4289
      @dennisnielsen4289 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maximin so far, has been injured so much that it has been the cause of lack of playing time and probably trust by Eddie howe. On the few occasions he had a start lately, it is clear he is trying to adapt to Eddie's style of football, but seems to progress slower than the likes of Joelinton, Willock, Murphy, etc.
      I would also hate to see him leave, but at the same time, it's hard for me to see him staying, if I'm honest.

    Howe has done great, very impressive - but the real test stats next year. Its been a rare season where 3 of the established top 5 have been shit for large chunks of the season, and Newcastle have deservedly taken their spot (obviously Utd did well enough to not drop out). But with Poch coming into Chelsea and potentially getting them back on track, and Liverpool improving somewhat towards the end of the season and seemingly targeting every midfielder in the world it will be interesting to see how Newcastle cope with extra pressure domestically and with CL football to juggle. I think they'll remain in the battle for CL spots and that Howe is more than capable of moving them on another step or two, but its different levels needed next year. They need a big transfer window and strong start to the season.
    Not a Newcastle fan, but after the dark years of your previous owner you guys deserve this upturn.

    Slight correction here, Dortmund's xG is significantly better as they only have a lower total xG by 0.9 but also played 4 fewer games as the Bundesliga only has 18 teams, resulting in an average xG per game of 2.1 compared to Newcastle's 1.9.

    Would Bruno playing as an 8 improve Newcastle if they had an outright 6?

    Absolute pap. Howe only got them where they are because Liverpool, chelsea and spurs all had abysmal seasons and were playing 3 games a week most a lot of the season while newcastle just had 38 league games and a couple of domestic cup games. Next season, I fully expect Liverpool, chelsea and spurs to out gun newcastle who will struggle having to play more games while being scheduled to play 12:30 Saurday kick offs for tv after having played away in some god forsaken east european backwater.

    i agree defensively it worked wonders, but we passed up on a lot of goals from too many touches on the wings and no one really in the box for crosses...
    still a lot of work IMO...

    Newcastle's biggest issue is their finishing. They create a lot of chances and don't profit as much as they could. If they got an out and out striker like Ruud VNR or Lineker they'd be phenomenal.

    What type of player do you think will improve Newcastle next season? Personally, I think Tierney will make a massive difference down the left. A dynamic, defensive midfield will solidify the centre and free up guimaraes.

    While feel very sad that AC Milan have lost Tonali, i will be rooting for his success at Newcastle and i think Tonali with Bruno and Joelinton is quite possibly the best overrall midfield in the entire league as all three of them are quite solid overrall players with both good defensive and offensive attributes.

    Its hard to compare what newcastle are doing vs what man city are doing. I mean with respect to man city they have the quality in their players that newcastle done have, so man city can afford to play more patient and with confidence that they have the quality to score goals.
    Newcastle on the other hand as you say benefit a lot from the directness catching teams short at the back we are not short of those direct dribble take ons which again sow a lot of panic in defenders knowing they are going to have these 1v1 situatiobs to deal with all game long, or as you say those turnovers where we press and the cycle of chaos begins with players being dragged out of position and scattered all over. Its been an impressive season for us. Obviously it would be more sustainable less injuries less player fatigue if we were able to play with patience like man city do. But for now we play how we need to play and even gordon is on the record as saying hes not fit enough to play this system, but hes young enough and definitely looks sharp enough to pick it up.

    You have earned another sub. i could not help it you just drew me in. Your unbiased analysis is refreshing, you load it neither for or against the team you are presenting which in turn allows the unbiased viewer to see just what you are getting at and appreciate the analysis.
    Thank you, and keep it up. 👍👍👍

    I'm utterly biased, but this is excellent analysis. I think Howe really showed how far he has progressed as a manager when changing things up when we hit that post World Cup slump.
