    As a former Xray tech, it’s because we do hundreds of these exams every month while a patient may only have one or two. It’s about exposure to the radiation.

    Someone best explained the exposures this way:
    Alcohol is seen as safe, so why doesn't the bartender take a drink each time a customer orders one?
    Because they'd be destroyed by the end of the night and on their way to organ failure after a month.
    But the hundreds of people they served alcohol to would be fine.
    It's a matter of exposure.

    • @GunmetalRaven
      @GunmetalRaven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@yomama5304 The x-ray rooms in the departments have lead in the walls and there's lead in the glass observation windows. So yeah, the button has to be behind that.
      Part of that is also because the exams we often need to do in those rooms use more radiation than the usual portable chest x-ray.
      There's this thing called mAs that determines basically how much of a dose of radiation we're using. A chest may use 2 compared to an abdomen which may take 20. ( There's variances to this with just how much kV we're using, patient conditions, patient density etc...)
      But yeah. @_@ We're in it all day ( flouro exams/OR cases in particular) and sometimes you can't avoid helping a patient hold position. So we get exposed in those instances too.
      Time / Distance / Shielding are sort of the foundation of what we do. The radiation we shoot out isn't the main cause of concern, it's the 'scatter'. It's like firing a water hose. There's splashback of particles that got bounced around, lost energy, and are more likely to be absorbed than to pass through. The farther away you are, the less likely you are too get hit by them ( like a campfire or being in the splash zone). XD

An X ray can emit 0.1 REM, not great not terrible. But the average person may get several in a lifetime. Most medical and government exposure targets are maybe 5 or 10 REM, which if we divide it by that, presumably you could receive exposures to 50 or 100 x rays, we would have to adjust it downward, because you wouldn’t be directly blasted plus any protection.

      The MRI machine would pull them out causing you pain and bleeding. The ring or stud would then become stuck to the walls of the machine causing the need for a powering down to to cut the magnetic pull so they could be removed, something that’s very costly and takes time. The patients scheduled after you would all have to reschedule for another time until the machine could be repaired.

      @darkelemental 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In the very unlikely event that we haven't asked you an absolute billion questions regarding piercings, or other metallic objects and you manage to get into the room. You'd quickly feel a slight pulling on the tongue ring. Usually we find patients immediately then move themselves out of the room. Same with any piercings because its definitely not a normal feeling. While the machine is idling, the magnetic field isn't drastically strong enough to rip it out of you instantly. If you ever did get to the table and the MRI 'spins' up then yes there's a chance it can be ripped off of your body, it would hurt like hell. We'd all get into a lot of trouble and the damn MRI would have to be put on a full shutdown to remove the piercing from the outer casing which is really expensive for the hospital because it takes a hell of a lot of power to do an initial startup compared to an at rest idle. Oh and probably a full decontamination clean because there's probably going to be some blood associated with it but we're used to that. My professional advice. I love this. I know about why this is true, cause exposure, but this reminds me of a news Collum where an X-ray tech was asked it they thought cell phone radiation was dangerous and they said it was

      Someone told me that if a person with a male reproductive system has their phone in their front pocket it can cause infertility over a period of time due to the radiation. It seems believable to a point but I still have no idea if it’s true haha

    I love how the world call us xray techs. In the UK we have a protected medical title of, Radiographer. Im not sure what you guys have to do to become an xray tech, but diagnostic radiographers here in the UK have slowly over the years, taken some of the roles only ever done by Radiologists. So for instance, after further training we're given the title of a reporting radiographer. As the name suggests, we are then able to independently report on any films just like our doctor counterparts. We also do a lot more with CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and dentistry. The term xray tech just sounds, to me, a little less professional but i also understand that it's kind of like that around the world.

    • @emilyhall9613
      @emilyhall9613 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they're still called radiographers in the US but most people would probably have no clue what he was talking about if he had used that term instead.

    • @crazy808ish
      @crazy808ish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We're called radiographers (or radiologic technologists) in the US too, but it's too long of a title, so most people just shorten it. Do people in the UK never have a shorter version of their professional title?

    • @samanthaguerin
      @samanthaguerin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Canada We are called Medical Radiation Technologist. But often just techs. Radiographer is not often used any but is still corrected.

      @rachel3760 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The official term for MRI, CT, and X-ray techs in the US is Radiologic Technologist. But no one knows what heck that means and some people really struggle to say the word "radiologic" so x-ray tech is easier.

    • @Yo_Vonny
      @Yo_Vonny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      X-ray tech just rolls off the tongue a little easier for most people but yes we're still called Radiographers the same way an Ultrasound tech is called a diagnostic sonographer. It does sound watered down but it's still the same thing

  • @rachel3760
    @rachel3760 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
