    Re peanuts and inflammation:
    This is complicated and I didn’t mean to diminish Nina’s personal experience. The word inflammation is triggering for a lot of health care professionals because it is so often misused/overused by people when discussing their diet. As for the feedback I’m getting:
    1. All foods affect different people differently. But most nutrition professionals will agree that “Inflammation” is an incredibly overused and misused word in wellness communities. It’s absolutely a real thing but often used inappropriately (or to describe poorly understood phenomenon/ catch all symptoms), and I was trying to make a point based on an actual evidence based definition of inflammation.
    2. You’re right officially classified as a legume, but nutritionally they are more similar to nuts and seeds
    3. Peanuts actually have a relatively favourable omega ratio compared to a lot of other nuts or seeds (or legumes if we’re being technical ). Also you may be able to say” an excess of omega 6s is inflammatory” but we can’t reduce whole foods to nutrients in a vacuum like that. And peanuts contain a wide range of other beneficial anti inflammatory compounds which is why I think we want to avoid demonizing them based on one compound they contain of many.
    My goal was to prevent unnecessary food fear around a generally nutritious food (hence my comment that it’s not UNIVERSALLY inflammatory) but yes of course everyone will have different experiences with different foods.

      But peanuts are or I should say can be inflammatory for alot of people. For one they have alot of mold contamination and it's a legume so they aren't digested well. Legumes, beans and nuts and nightshades have protective proteins in them so that bugs and animals don't bother them. Even soaking beans doesn't get rid of all the lectins

    Nina has a pretty normal diet in my books. I also don’t eat gluten because I find I feel better and have more energy when I don’t. I also don’t eat dairy much as I find it’s better for my skin. Whilst food freedom is important, some people choose to not eat foods because it feels better for them that way. Whilst demonising foods for all is bad, it is also bad to demonise those who find better health in choosing to eat this way.

    Unfortunately almost no fishing is sustainable or accessable with the current state of the world's oceans. Seaspiracy is just a documentary with it's own flaws but that doesn't dismiss heaps of scientific evidence of lack of sustainability. If you are interested in learning about the sustainability of the fishing industry seek information from a scientist in the field...not a dietitian. No hate just saying.

      @@sikrijo Very dependent on what country you're from and what species you're eating. If you're eating an invasive freshwater fish that's probably good, or a fish from a multi-trophic aquaculture system (eg fish from rice paddies) that is often also fine. However most of the sustainable freshwater species are going to be carp or catfish so are less appetising for Western consumers.

    • @redandorange555
      @redandorange555 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@sikrijo In addition to what Fenella Deans said, freshwater bodies have significantly less global coverage compared to the world's oceans so if we were to shift towards freshwater species overfishing would occur much more quickly. However, due to the increased ability to regulate fishing of inland water bodies this is less likely in countries with proper regulations. The other concern is pollution and runoff, many of our lakes and rivers which were previously used for aquaculture were fished to depletion and do not meet water quality standards which make these organisms safe for consumption. This is most evident in the U.S. with regards to the history of the freshwater shellfish industry.

    As the wife of an Alaska Bering Sea Fisherman, I’m quite disappointed by the reaction to that documentary.
    Not all fishing industries are like that. Alaska is extremely regulated and tightly controlled based on fish populations in the ocean. It’s extremely hard to get a license or new quota for fishing because it’s so tightly controlled.
    The native Alaskan communities in Alaska and the rest of the state are incredibly dependent on this industry for their livelihood. And there is a great deal of care and respect that goes into it.
    I would encourage people to still support Alaskan fishing and check to see if your fish is coming from Alaska and if it’s wild caught.
    Thankyou Abby for going into this

  • @merrymachiavelli2041

    On the fisheries point - it is probably true that _some_ fish and seafood can be consumed sustainably. However, speaking personally, I do not want to spend ages thinking about the providence of my food or coming up with loads of complex 'allowed'/'not allowed' categories. Life is too short - it is simpler and less hassle to just set broad rules (e.g. 'I don't eat fish').
    -
    Also, okay...so a selective fish diet is better than a non-selective vegan or vegetarian diet. But that's comparing apples and oranges. If you were to have a selective vegan diet (e.g. cut out higher carbon foods like soya and imported tropical fruit) what then? The issue with farmed fish is that you generally need to grow crops to feed them.
    -
    Just in general, you can make almost any diet sustainable if you are regimented about cutting out problematic foods (even a carnivore diet, if you ate exclusively roadkill and left-overs). But given that 99% of adherents are not going to do that, it's more illustrative to talk about the diet as a whole.

    Props to you Abbey!! I love your videos, people are always looking for a reason to be upset with creators. It’s not hard to scroll past and not watch or comment if they don’t like they way you’re trying to get the message across. If they watched your channel more they would know you speak on common food perceptions as a whole when celebrity brings it up. Not just to bash them. And even if it was for that, it’s because they tend to unknowingly feed toxic misinformation to young individuals who look up to them. (Not necessarily talking about Nina, just in general)

Now I just say yes I earned to have this snack that I enjoy and it makes me happy I choose once a week some popcorn, a glass of liquor, a sweet, portion bag of chips, ice cream, ect. I feel like because I do well throughout the week why not just enjoy my life and have it! It really has helped me to think in that way I used to be a binge eater and when I had those words in my head that is why I would binge eat I told myself Ok I will just have my guilty food or snack and then before I knew it the entire cartoon or bag of something was gone! As a marine biologist I would say it is a bit misinformed to say that small scale fishing in general is not where the problem lies as these small artisan fisheries in developing countries are mostly unrelated leading to inaccurate estimations on how many fish are caught.
    There is definitely sustainable methods of fishing and it will take reforming most of the industry to do so but there is change happening.
    People putting pressure on fisheries and aquaculture to change their practices is the only way we will see change. Even more importantly holding our governments accountable for better regulation and management is absolutely critical.

I’m not waiting for any more evidence and I’m erring on the safe side and drastically reduced my seafood consumption years ago (after watching another doc called End of the Line). I have other food options, some communities do not. Also, farmed salmon is terrible for the environment and native stocks. It’s not sustainable, for example it introduces parasites and requires large amounts of antibiotics to survive the close quarters. If eat salmon, it’s wild, and I eat it rarely.

      Yeah this was a big red flag for me as well. I went to school and took multiple oceanography and sustainability courses in which professors would not consume fish. Almost no fishing of any kind is sustainable with the current state of the worlds oceans.

      I wish this comment is seen by more people. I feel her saying the documentary is riddled with misinformation is a big claim without any evidence. She needs to do a video if she's going to make that big of a statement

      Not only that but those small scale fisheries would immediately go depleted if everyone that currently supports large scale industrial fishing switched to that. There are too many people on our planet to ever have a sustainable way of fishing.

    You shouldn’t say anything about “guilt free” things when built bar marketing is “guilt free.”

    • @nelnason
      @nelnason 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I guess as long as you’re being paid, it’s not an issue. It conflicts with everything that you preach. Built bars are good, but again their marketing tactic is “guilt free” candy. lol.

      She often includes this as a caveat/disclaimer, especially in her earlier Built partnership videos. :)

    • @nelnason
      @nelnason 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@ViaCalderwoodMusic Regardless, it’s still contradictory. She criticizes guilt free marketing and says no food is guilty…but promotes a brand that perpetuates food as guilt. I understand she doesn’t agree or believe in this marketing, but it doesn’t change the fact that she has aligned herself with a company that creates fear mongering as a way to sell their bars.

      So true, it’s kind of frustrating. I understand everyone’s gotta pay the bills but aren’t there other brands to partner with lol

    • @nelnason
      @nelnason 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@phillyst4668 Exactly, and I wouldn’t give this criticism if she stopped preaching her stance on guilt free. I just don’t like the contradiction and her need to make it seem like she’s above that mentality when she promotes built bars for several minutes on almost every video
      she does.

      It was not at all riddled with misinformation. The bottom line is that there are too many human beings on our planet to ever have a sustainable way of fishing. The only people upset with the documentary are those that want to turn a blind eye to their own dietary decisions and the consequences those decisions have on our planet.

    I am sure team dessert depending on what I like. My dessert favorite is not really dessert but is actually butter mixed in with a nut butter and a bit of chocolate powder spread on a GF flat bread that I make myself. I add a sprinkle of some coconut sugar or a dash of maple syrup into the nut butter and butter spread and yes I love it!

I have 2 kids( 5,2) so watching anything has to be done when they are not around lol its 534 am and just finished the video before my workout. I would also like to day that you what I eat in a day was super relatable especially when you emphasized the 2nd cup of coffee without anyone calling on you or being tugged on or crying lol I felt that 😅 . Have a beautiful day and stay safe,happy, healthy.

    When it comes to sustainability, I'm lucky that I grew up almost exclusively on fish that was harvested as a part of recreational fishing, including catching my own. Unfortunately it can be difficult to find extremely local seafood (aka crappie from my grandparent's backyard) at a supermarket and what is there is so poorly labelled it's even harder to make good choices. It would be nice if there was a way to connect local sport and recreational fishers with folks who might want some of their excess.
